For those who already follow my blog, I apologize for the radio silence the last few weeks. Between my laptop being held hostage by Geek Squad (whatever is wrong is taking forever to fix), and moving to a new home (took a week to get them to come out and set up the new internet), it feels like forever since I’ve been able to get online. The phone rang, dragging Nate from his thoughts.

“I’m gonna put it on screen,” Ranger called out from the kitchen.

“Sure.”

The wall flashed to life, and a dark-haired man with dark eyes, appeared. The stranger reminded Nate of the doctor at the lottery exams—lab coat, stethoscope, well-groomed—but this man was older and seemed to have an edge to him.

“Hey,” Nate greeted. “What can I do for you?”

“Am I speaking with Nathaniel Curtis Stockton?”

“Yeah.” Nate took a swig of his drink.

“Wonderful.” The man smiled but the expression didn’t reach his eyes. “I am Doctor Rafael Trask. I am one of the lead scientists in a series of special clinical studies being performed. I understand you failed the medical section of the lottery exams?”

“Yeah.” The guy’s voice sounded cool … exact. Combined with the discord of his face, Nate sensed an air of danger surrounding the man. Creeped out, Nate was hesitant to say too much.

“Well, first off, let me say, we are not associated with the lottery. But should you participate in our studies you may have another chance at traveling to and settling on Mars. We also offer outstanding compensation. Despite whether you are or are not picked for travel, you will pretty much be set for life.”

Ranger strolled into the room and sat beside Nate, twirling the comm-wand between his fingers. “What are these studies?”

The man’s eyes narrowed. “Who are you?”

“His husband,” Ranger answered. “Whatever he’s to be involved in, wherever he’s going, I’ll be at his side. What’s all this about?”

Doctor Trask leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers together. He looked down his nose at the camera on his comm device, appearing to contemplate what Ranger had said and giving Ranger a once-over. The doctor reminded Nate of a vulture.

“Okay,” Trask said. “Like I was about to mention to Mister Stockton, we are trying to find cures for people who did not pass the medical aspects of the lottery exams due to their diseases. We are also looking into the sterility epidemic and chromosomal changes in the female population.”

“Could you hold a moment?” Nate asked, grabbing the wand from Ranger and muting the call. He pointed the wand at the screen. “Do you think this is legit?”

“Yeah. It could be.”

“It might be the answer to our Mars problem.” Nate smiled, feeling a glimmer of warm hope spring up within him again.

“Perhaps. Should we see what’s what with it?”

Nate unmuted the call. “What if we say we’re interested?”

The doctor lifted a corner of his mouth. “I will digitize a package of information to you, and then we will be in touch with further instructions.”

“Well,” Ranger said, “count us interested.”

“Wonderful,” the doctor drawled.

Reggie nodded and smiled as he closed the door behind them and then led Calvin to the foot of his bed. Placing both of his hands behind Calvin’s neck, he pulled him in and tenderly kissed his mouth. His hands slid down until he reached the top of Calvin’s shirt. He drew the shirttails from his pants and began to unbutton it.

“You’ll go slow, right?” Calvin asked as he pulled away, breaking the kiss.

“Whatever you want, Calvin. We don’t have to push this. We can just talk if you like.”

Calvin’s eyes began to twinkle.“The time fer talkin’s over.”

“I’ll be very gentle,” Reggie assured him, “It’s been a while for me as well, but you have been with a man before, right?

“Oh, yeah, but it’s been more ’n a couple o’ years.”

Calvin reached for Reggie’s shirt, but Reggie stopped him when he cupped his chin with his right hand and drew him toward him by the shoulder with his left. Calvin’s arms fell to his sides as a moan escaped his mouth when Reggie ran his tongue up his neck and ended behind his ear.

“God, you smell good,” Reggie whispered. “You taste even better, but there’s something I’ve wanted even more for days now.” Reggie dropped to his knees and frantically yanked at Calvin’s belt. He undid the top button, and slid down the fly of his pants, then pulled them to the floor in one fell swoop. His eyes began to flutter as he buried his face in Calvin’s groin and inhaled his scent through the boxers’ fabric.

As Calvin’s legs began to tremble, he grasped Reggie’s head, steadying himself. “You’re gonna make me buckle over if’n you keep that up.”

“Mmm,” Reggie moaned.

“So good … you [smell] so good,” Reggie moaned between breaths, not slowing down in the least.

“Reggie!” Calvin cried out as he stumbled forward.

As he fell toward the floor, Reggie’s grip was broken as Calvin caught himself against the footboard of the bed. “Damn, boy, you nearly pushed me over the edge. You got yourself one hell of an appetite there!”

“And then some,” Reggie said, with a leer.

Calvin sat down on the floor and held his hands out in front of him. “Please, can we slow this down a smidge? We got all night.”

“Yeah, we do,” Reggie answered with lust in his voice. “And I’m planning to dine on you several times before morning.”

“Then let’s do this right.” How ‘bout a shower, or a bath first?”

“Even better.”

“This here’s a different side of you I ain’t never seen, fer sure. I think I like it, Reggie, but it’s gonna take some gettin’ used t’.”

“Sorry,” Reggie said anxiously. “I’m just so worked up right now. I can’t believe this is really happening, not to me, not now, and I don’t want it to slip by.”

Calvin caressed Reggie’s face. “Me neither.”

“I was so sure I wasn’t going to let it happen. I was determined to not allow my desire for you to ruin the friendship that began to develop between us. And besides, you’re my employee.”

Calvin leaned forward and reached out to caress Reggie’s face. “I ain’t makin’ light of it, but I sure am glad you decided otherwise, ‘coz I’m gonna need help with this,” he said as he gazed into Reggie’s eyes and drew his hand to the bulge in his pants. Then he lowered his eyes to Reggie’s groin. “And I think you’re gonna need help, too.”

Calvin pushed Reggie back up and rose to his knees as he began to unfasten Reggie’s pants. As the belt came free, Reggie helped to shimmy them down.

Reggie moaned as Calvin caressed the bulge. “There’s only one thing that will relieve it, Calvin.”

“I know.” Calvin answered as he licked his lips and leaned forward. “And I’m gonna help you out with that right now, as best I can.”

I imagined the woman haunting my dreams danced on the stage to my right as music thumped in my ears and the scents of sex and booze filled my nose. Cadence hurried into the club, but pulled up short, her gaze flitting around from bar to stage to me.

Fuck.

I groaned as her blue-eyed gaze landed on me, causing my dick to jerk inside my leathers. Fucking zipper pressed into my swollen length, but I didn’t shift or drop a hand to ease the discomfort.

She started toward me, but I kept my arms crossed, my face a mask while sliding my gaze down over her body. She hid her lush curves behind a dark coat, one she clutched to her middle, her knuckles white around the straps of an oversized purse. Tight-ass jeans clung to her thighs and calves, and pink heels the same color of her purse encased her feet.

All woman. Fucking hot as hell sashaying toward me like she owned the goddamn room and knew she drew attention left and right.

I glanced upward as she drew closer. Her pulse thrummed in her neck. Black-smudged tear tracks lined her cheeks, the rest of her mascara smeared beneath her wide eyes I hadn’t noticed when she’d first appeared across the lounge.

The fuck? I scowled, but otherwise held unmoving as she stepped right into my personal space.

“Where’s Angel?” she half-shouted to be heard over the thumping bass.

I tipped my head toward the door behind me.

“I need to see her.” Wetness welled in her eyes, turning them crystalline in the dimmed recess light overhead.

I didn’t move.

Cadence angled to step around me, but I shifted left. “No one’s allowed out back.”
Tears spilled over, and she stepped toward my right, but I moved with her, blocking her way.

“You fucking oaf!” She swung her purse, but I tightened my abs and let the leather bounce off me. “Let me past! I have to talk to her!”

As the protector of the Outlaws’ dancers, I wouldn’t be swayed into shirking my duties — by anyone, no matter how hot or frantic they appeared. Lips pressed tight, I stood like a mountain, uncaring of whatever she wished to dish out.

She shrieked and pummeled against me, her fists almost amusing, but my lips didn’t so much as twitch.

The pulsing music of the latest dancer faded, and Cadence’s curses drew attention.

She swung toward me again, and I closed my hand around her forearm. “Enough.”

Her lower lip trembled and tears dripped from her chin. “Please.”

Her whisper fucking ruined me — a pleading I’d imagined on her lips while jerking off every goddamn night since first seeing her.

“Fuck.” So much for no admittance. Scowling, I yanked open the door behind me and dragged her into the dim hallway beyond.

Gunner, our president, and his old lady, Shelby, moved toward us from the dressing room, Angel and Bowie on their heels, both couples hanging on one another with that lovey-dovey touching that twisted my stomach.

“Cadence?” Angel pushed around Gunner, and Cadence let out a sob as I let go of her arm and her roommate grabbed her in a hug.

“Someone found out,” Cadence sobbed. “Fucking hell, I’m done for!”

“Shit.” Angel glanced over her shoulder at Bowie, whose scowl mirrored my own.
He spewed a curse as though knowing exactly what Cadence had meant. The harshness of his tone, the glint in his eyes, raised the hairs on my neck.

“What the fuck is going on?” Gunner asked as I stepped back, hands fisted, my focus on the back of Cadence’s head as she cried against Angel’s shoulder.

“Cadence and Senator MacGillroy have been fucking for two months,” Bowie answered for both the girls.

Cadence jerked back from Angel’s arms, her shoulders wilting. “You told him?”

Angel shrugged although her brow furrowed. “No biggie.”

“No biggie?” Cadence jerked from Angel’s hold, stumbling backward into me.

I grasped her upper arms to keep her from falling over. “I told you not to tell anyone!” she half-sobbed, her body trembling. “He’ll kill me if word gets out!”

“No one will lay a goddamn hand on you.” Bowie spoke truth. Cadence didn’t belong to an Outlaw, but I wasn’t about to let anyone touch her. Threaten her. A rumble sounded in my chest at the feeling I hadn’t had for years, and Cadence tilted her head back and to the side, capturing my gaze.

Silence descended.

“Do what you have to do,” Gunner said a moment later, stepping past us, his hand wrapped around Shelby’s. “Oh, and Austin?”

My ears perked up to listen to whatever my president had to say behind me, but I couldn’t tear my gaze off Cadence’s wide eyes as she blinked up at me.

“Cadence is your responsibility.”

He’d been hoping to see Mercedes, but as the owner of the Fiddler droned on and on about building miniature tanks from World War One, his new hobby, it became clear that Scott was going to be disappointed.

As the newest sales rep at Winters Beer, Scott had been tasked with trying to build their brand in northwestern Ontario. He traveled to various restaurants, bars, and hotels in an attempt to get them to expand their product line to include Winters Beer.

For months he’d been trying to get Winters into the Fiddler. It was a popular watering hole, one his friends often frequented. The owner, Jim Sanders, was dragging his feet when it came to adding to the menu. Scott had a feeling Jim was looking to sell the bar. His interest seemed torn between too many things. Midlife crisis, Scott thought, as he looked over the man who had recently dyed his hair and was in the midst of growing a poorly shaped goatee.

It didn’t really bother Scott, though. He didn’t mind Jim’s hesitation. It gave him more opportunities to run into Mercedes.

As far as he was concerned, Mercedes was a goddess.

She was a bartender there. She had straight black hair, so straight that not a strand was ever out of place. Occasionally she’d braid a little strip down the front, and it would sway to and fro as she rushed to fill drink orders. She worked at both the Fiddler and at Club Ivy, a nearby night club. He noticed when she worked at the bar her makeup was always more conservative, yet still she wore bright lipstick, while at the club she usually wore a thick line of black eyeliner, curving out from the corner of her eye. It was generally enhanced by a bright color, a bold green or daring purple. Despite her workplace, she always had polished nails with little embellishments on the thumbnails.

He wanted to see her hair messed up after a night of passionate sex. He wanted to see her makeup smudged beneath her eyes come morning, but mostly he wanted to see those fingernails digging into his flesh as he rode deep between her legs.

Scott fought not to get a boner as he stood talking with Jim. He glanced toward the empty bar. The Fiddler wouldn’t be open for another hour, but sometimes Mercedes came in early. It was the best time to talk to her.

For months now he’d been chasing her. He’d flirt. She’d flirt. He’d ask her out. She’d say no.

He didn’t understand.

His best friend Heath kept telling him it was part of her job to flirt. She did it for tips, but Scott knew it was more than that. He knew there was something special between them. And he knew she felt it too.

He just couldn’t figure out why she kept turning him down.

Unhappy with how his business had concluded, Scott headed for the exit. Jim was still being reluctant, and Scott wondered if something more was happening than just stubbornness. Jim had said he’d meet with Allan again, but the whole thing pissed Scott off. It wasn’t the first time they’d set up a meeting, then Jim had blown Allan off and didn’t show up. Besides, it was Scott’s job to land the sale, not Allan’s. Allan was the owner of the company, and more recently, an engaged man. He should be spending his time showering his fiancée, Candice, with love and affection.

As he approached the double doors of the bar, he heard a frustrated voice through the wood, followed by repeated banging and thumping noises.

“Stupid, Goddamned, fuckin’ thing!”

Scott opened the door that wasn’t vibrating on its hinges and saw Mercedes standing on the other side trying in vain to pull her key out.

“Hey. Having some trouble?”

She glanced at him before straightening her braid. “No, I just thought I’d fight with the lock for no reason.” She returned her attention to the key and gave it another pull.

“Sorry,” she apologized for her outburst. “What are you doing here?”

“Talking with Jim. Again.”

She nodded. “I see. I take it that it didn’t go well?”

“He’s being stubborn.”

“Yeah, he’s like that. And cheap, too! Like this lock. It would take nothing to fix it. Hell, I offered to change it myself, but he won’t shell out the money for a new one. Stingy bastard.”

Worried Jim might overhear their conversation, Scott shut the door. He’d gone back to his office, but Scott didn’t want to chance her losing her job over a conversation. “Want me to get it out?” he offered.

Mercedes smiled at him. “It’s okay.” She tried again, failed, and slapped her palm against the wood surface. This time she refrained from swearing, though Scott assumed she’d only done so because he was standing there.

“Want me to try now?”

“No. I’ll get it.” Twenty seconds later, after jiggling and pulling the key, she slumped. With her forehead against the door she finally gave in. “It’s cold out here. I give.”

For December it was unseasonably warm, but he understood. “My fee just went up.”

“What?”

“My fee for helping. It went up. See, the first time you refused my help I understood. You wanted to do it yourself. The second time you were being stubborn, and I’ve had my fill of stubborn today. I’ll help you, but it will cost you.”

My breath caught at the sight of the man coming through the door.

Damnit. My heartbeat kicked up a few notches, and my panties were done for, but my head. My head screamed retreat loud enough I questioned the wisdom of making “friends”.

Jonny’s gaze landed on my face, and I felt the scrutiny of his intense eyes across the kitchen.

Janie threw herself into Hawk’s arms, legs wrapped around his waist as she attacked his mouth.

Jonny glanced at the two of them sucking face, and turned back toward me, one eyebrow raised.

I found myself laughing beneath my breath and shrugging. “Guess they kind of like each other,” I said, my voice a little shaky.

“Guess so.” He slipped his leather jacket off his shoulders, and my mouth dried.

Nothing hotter than a ripped man in a tight, white t-shirt. While Jonny probably had a handful of years—if not ten—on me, the man sure took care of himself. A few lines lay at the corner of his eyes, and gray hinted in the dark hair above his temples, but beneath his neck? He could have been taken for a twenty-something with the hard dips and valleys of his body. Black leather pants clung to every inch of him from the waist down.

Saliva rushed back to coat my mouth, and I swallowed while ripping my gaze off him to focus on the carrots. My hand trembled, and I put the knife down, deciding there were more than enough carrots chopped for four salads.

“Hope you boys are hungry,” Janie said, a little breathless. “Want to go fire up the grill with me, baby?”

“Hmm.” Hawk hummed his agreement and grabbed a couple beers from the fridge.

I busied myself putting the carrots on top of the four bowls of lettuce Janie had readied.

“Be right back!” Janie giggled and scooted out the door once more with Hawk.

Jonny stayed behind, beer in hand, focus on me. “How are you?”

I had to swallow again from drool and nerves alike. “Better than yesterday,” I said, trying for a smile.

“Get some sleep last night?”

“Finally, yes.”

“Hawk told me you’re going to stay with them for a while.”

I nodded and moved toward the table to put the salads by each plate. The weight of Jonny’s stare kept my heartbeat thumping, my skin tingling.

“You’re welcome at the club.”

My attention shot toward him even though Hawk had already told Janie as much over the phone earlier in the day. Jonny swigged from his bottle of beer, dark gaze on my face while swallowing.

“Hawk says you’re good people, and I trust him above everyone else.”

Sudden tears filled my eyes, and I turned away to put the final salad on the table.

“Hey.” The warmth of his touch on my elbow stilled me. “You okay?”

A mere foot from me, the slight scent of soap, hops, and mint clinging to him weakened me in the best way possible. “Y-yeah,” I managed to say, but didn’t pull away from the first man’s touch I’d experienced without cringing.

Jonny glanced down to his hand still cupping my elbow and lifted his focus once more to my face, a question in his eye.

Temptation to lean into him, to accept the comfort he offered, played with my mind, and I stared up into eyes darker than the smoothest chocolate. Heated energy charged between us, making it hard for me to breathe.

Jonny’s gaze flitted down to my lips, and I realized I’d licked the lower without meaning to.

His bottle clinked on the table as he set it down, and my breath caught again as he lifted his hand and brushed my hair back over my shoulder, his fingertips feather-light over the skin of my neck.

Goosebumps spread down over my entire body, and I shivered, completely trapped by his gaze and torn between wanting to close the distance between us and scurrying away to find a hole to hide in.

“You and your gorgeous curves are one temptation I don’t need right now,” he murmured, his focus dropping to my lips again, “but I sure as hell want.”

Good Lord almighty, the man didn’t waste time or mince words. Tell him ditto or pull away?
