“Holy shit.” Serendipity squinted at the shadowy figure running toward her RV. Who in their right mind would be out in this weather? Goodness knows she wasn’t anywhere close to right in the head. That was why she was somewhere near West Virginia, off Highway 85, trying to find a place to park. Any clearing would do at this point because the weather was becoming unpredictable, and visibility was nearly gone.

There were very few vehicles on the road, including salt trucks. And when the salt trucks stopped running you knew you were in deep shit.

But there was a figure, moving at a rapid clip, and coming straight for her — and he wasn’t stopping.

“Damn it,” she hissed, slamming on her brakes as the person stopped right in front of her. “Fuck!”

Her tiny RV started fishtailing, the back end whirling out of control as the back tires tried to find traction on a solid sheet of ice and snow. Quickly, she jerked the wheel in the direction the RV was skidding and began to tap the brakes, her hands and arms locked onto the steering wheel.

The RV began to spin, and Serendipity let out a squeal as it made a complete circle before hitting something with a loud thump and then sliding to a stop. Never had she ever been more grateful for a total lack of traffic. She sat there for a moment, her heart racing, breathing like a bellows before she recalled the thump.

“Shit!” she gasped, unclipping her safety belt and swinging the driver’s side door open.

An arctic blast of cold wind and hard snow hit her in the face and stole her breath. She looked around, the eerie pink/black color of the sky sending an ominous shiver up her spine, but she shook off the feeling of impending doom and stepped out into the storm.

It was like the wind was blowing sand instead of a snow/ice mix. Serendipity squinted as she looked over the road, her feet in their fuzzy blue boots slipping before finding purchase. She slid-walked over to where she thought she’d heard the thump and began to scan the area around her truck.

“Hello?” she called out, wrapping her arms around her body. The cold weather leached the heat from her skin. “Hello? Anybody? Are you hurt? Can you hear me?” The wind forced her words back at her like a slap, and she began to panic even more. Had she imagined everything? No. There was a man… she was sure of it.

Her body began to shake in reaction to the adrenaline building up in her system. Her eyes were watering. She prayed she had run over Bambi or something instead of a person.

“Hello?” She was about to give up her search and head back to the RV for a flashlight and her snowshoes when she heard a moan.

Spinning toward the moan almost landed her on her ass, but she managed to windmill her arms and plant her feet so she didn’t land on her butt as she moved toward the sound.

“Hello — Oh, sweet –“

There was a man lying in the snow.

She raced over, slipping and falling to her knees. Scrambling through the slushy buildup on the road, she came to a stop in front of a still form.

“Oh, God,” she moaned, reaching out to touch a bare shoulder. The person was lying on their side, his or her face obscured by a long tangled fall of white, curly hair.

The shoulder quivered and the moan sounded again. Serendipity rolled him — yes, that was a male face — onto his back.

“Hey.” She softened her voice as she brushed the wet hair from his face. “Hey,” she repeated, and his eyes opened. “Whoa.” She had never seen such pretty but strange eyes. They were gold, like a sunburst, and they were surrounded by a huge band of bright purple that almost matched the storm-torn sky.

“Whoa?” he repeated softly, blinking up at her before closing his eyes again.

“Hey, no! Don’t do that,” she begged. “Don’t fall asleep.”

“Sleep,” he repeated, his whole body shifting in the cold snow, like it was the most comfortable mattress and blanket he owned.

“No.” She shook his shoulder and his eyes opened again. “No sleep. Not out here.”

It was about then that she noticed her victim was totally nude. Covered by his fall of hair, it appeared that this guy was well built, and only his long locks hid his naughty bits. But her eyes should not dip down because she was the one who hit him in the first place.

“Oh, shit,” she gasped, amazed that he wasn’t blue and dying, as exposed as he was. She had to get him back to her RV before he froze.

“Hey.” She shook him again, hoping against hope he didn’t have any internal injuries. “We have to go.”

“Go,” he repeated, but this time he didn’t lie back down. This time his eyes stayed on her face for a good moment before he began to struggle to his feet.

“Yes, go.” She nodded, reaching out to grip his arm in both of hers, trying to haul him to his feet. “We need to go.”

After a cold moment that felt more like an eternity, Serendipity got him to his feet, and then she froze once more. Damn, he was tall.

Standing fully upright, he was about a foot taller than her five foot five. But she only had a moment to marvel because he began to stagger.

“Okay,” she crooned, not knowing if she was trying to calm him or herself. “We got this. We can do this.”

Book Review: Seeran (Warriors of Sangrin) by Nancey Cummings and Starr Huntress #AlienEncounters #SciFiRomance

Seeran never lost control.
Responsible for the security of his clan and warlord, he couldn’t afford distraction or attachment. Then, on a Terran beach, he stumbled upon a male assaulting a female. The ice that ran through his veins turned to fire. The frightened female is his mate.

Whatever control he’d possessed snapped in a moment of recklessness, and he hoped that was all he’d lost.

Hazel shouldn’t desire the terrifying alien. She’d just escaped a disastrous marriage with a violent man, so how could she fall for a growling soldier who punched first and asked questions later? Why did his arms feel like the safest place in the universe?

Her gut said to trust Seeran, but her intuition had failed her so many times before.

MY REVIEW:

4 stars

A stoic alien warrior and a damsel in distress — the makings of a great romance!

I enjoyed not only the personalities of both characters but the dynamic between them. They were the perfect example of opposites attract, and I don’t just mean because one is a human and one’s from another planet.

If you’re looking for an alien romance with steamy scenes, drama, and a quick romance, Seeran is a good choice. It kept me entertained and I didn’t want to put it down.

The thing I disliked most is the cover. It looks too much like 90% of all the other alien romance covers on Amazon.

BOOK REVIEW: Jaxar by Starr Huntress and Nancey Cummings #AlienEncounters #SciFiRomance

Once bitten, twice shy.
Vanessa knows what aliens want—babies— and she’s not having it. She’ll change her name, change her ID chip, and hunker down on a miserable moon on the far side of the galaxy before she gets matched to a Mahdfel brute.

Again.

Jaxar knows that Vanessa is the one for him but he needs time to convince her. With the clock ticking, he’ll do anything to claim her reluctant heart.

Even steal her.

MY REVIEW:

5 stars!

A sci-fi romance that doesn’t focus on making babies? There aren’t nearly enough of them. I loved that while Van had wanted a baby, she didn’t let her infertility define her. She still loved herself and didn’t feel broken.

Jaxar is funny, sweet, protective, and just amazing all around. The ways he shows Van what she means to him, and so easily accepted any family they might have would mean adopting, made him perfect for her. All he needed was his mate, and he was determined to win her.

Definitely a five star read! Couldn’t put it down.

UNMASKING THE HEAT

By Angela Knight

I’ve always thought comics were sexy.

That may seem a little weird, until I tell you I discovered comics about the time I hit puberty. When I was twelve, my grandmother passed away, and my mother took me to a therapist. He had an enormous stack of Batman comic books in his lobby, and he gave them to me. I took them home, and I was hooked.

The Batman artist of my teenage years was Neal Adams, who made Batman look sexy and tormented — and basically naked as he chased Catwoman all over Gotham. One of my favorite Pinterest images recently is of Bats holding Catwoman with her whip wrapped around his throat. (Though the Batman of my imagination has always seemed more of a sonofabitch Dominant than anything else. It isn’t much of a stretch. That character is a bit of a bastard even in 1990’s cartoons.)

Years later, my first published work was in comics – a three-issue mini-series called Cycops about three cops with computers implants in their brains. I basically used the same idea in my Time Hunters series for Berkley Sensation. Like the Cycops, the Warlords had the abilities to draw on brief explosions of superhuman strength.

Power has always fascinated me. For one thing, I believe we have more of it than we think we do, something we often discover only when we’re backed into a corner.

That’s why I write the stories I do – about people waging desperate battle against evil for those they love. It’s only then they discover their inner superheroes, realizing they have more strength than they ever knew. We become our own superheroes only by being tested.

Besides, with great power come great sex!

Unmasked (Box Set)

Things get hot when heroes take off their masks — among other things!

Hero Sandwich: When Meg Jennings finds herself at the mercy of a pair of kinky heroes, she discovers keeping a wicked secret can be good, dirty fun.

Voodoo: Voodoo is tired of waiting for Lynx. Time to show him everything she can do with her psychic superpowers.

Taming Jack: Lark Anderson is determined to save Deputy Jack Ramsey — even if it means accepting an inhuman invader.

Natasha and the Android: When Natasha is kidnapped by an android supervillain who wants to find out why humans are so obsessed with sex, she realizes the dark side has a lot more going for it than she thought.

Masks & Mistletoe: From rescuing a ten-year-old from an evil Santa to celebrating a BDSM Christmas, superheroes Lock and Ultra explore discipline, dominance and the kinky way…

Publisher’s Note: Unmasked (Box Set) contains the previously published novellas Hero Sandwich, Voodoo, Taming Jack, Natasha and the Android, and Masks & Mistletoe.

Excerpt from Hero Sandwich

Meg Jennings stepped out onto the roof of her apartment building, her boots scraping on the concrete. Below, horns honked and an eighteen-wheeler growled in acceleration as a fire truck wailed its way down the street.

Restless, she strode to the roof’s edge. All around her, the lights of Manhattan glittered in the darkness as if the stars had showered down to earth. Meg stared downward, brooding.

She’d had no choice except to break it off with Richard tonight. Much as she loved him, she couldn’t keep tolerating his secrecy, his habit of disappearing, his evasiveness. She couldn’t even remember the last time they’d actually ended a date without him being called off by some mysterious phone call. Any explanation he’d bothered to give afterward always had the ring of a lie.

Meg had lived a double life long enough to recognize the signs in somebody else. She knew what she was doing in hers. She wasn’t at all sure she wanted to know what Richard was doing with his.

Maybe he was a hero, risking his life in the pursuit of justice. But there was something about Richard, something just a little bit dark, a little bit ruthless. That sounded more like villain than hero to Meg — and she wasn’t willing to go down that particular road again. She didn’t like where it led.

Even so, the expression on his handsome face when she’d told him it was over had stabbed into her soul. Pain and vulnerability were not emotions she associated with Richard Drake, billionaire captain of industry.

She’d found herself explaining. “I just can’t live with the lies anymore, Richard.”

A cool gleam of determination replaced the pain in those wolf-pale eyes. “We all have our secrets, Meg. And we all tell lies.” Then he’d walked out.

Now she glowered at the city below. We all have our secrets. What the hell did that mean?

With a huff, Meg stepped off the edge of the roof and into empty air. For an instant, she fell like a rock. Then the generators in her suit started pumping out lev-fields, and she rose slowly skyward like a soap bubble on the breeze.

Absently, she watched the traffic stream below her boots in a river of headlights. Was this what Richard meant? Did he know what she was? And would he tell anyone in that other life she suspected he led?

If he did, he might as well paint a target on her chest and declare open season. Too many pissed-off villains — and even a few heroes — had sworn to take revenge on Paparazzi for the photos she’d taken. If any of them ever found out who she was, she wouldn’t have a prayer.

It was hard to believe Richard would deliberately endanger her that way. But then, she didn’t really know him, did she? That was the whole problem.

Frowning, Meg stretched her body out in the air, letting the lev-fields cradle her in invisible lines of force. With one hand, she checked the bag attached to her equipment belt. Her camera gear was safely stowed, ready for the night’s adventures. Taking a deep breath, she slowly flexed her toes, triggering the acceleration controls in her boots. Instantly, she shot forward, propelled by the levitation fields rippling around her.

It was ironic, really. If her father hadn’t been such an adrenaline junkie, he could have been pulling in billions in patent proceeds. The American military would have paid a great deal for a suit that could both levitate its wearer and turn him invisible.

Unfortunately, exploiting his inventions had always held less appeal for Gerald Jennings than committing crimes as the supervillain Bankbuster. He and his partner Nightwolf had terrorized New York together, in between battles with superheroes like Cougar and Lynx. Which was why Gerald was doing fifty in Attica now instead of living the high life in Acapulco.

Meg was lucky she hadn’t gone down with him. When she’d turned fifteen, Nightwolf had lost a fight with Cougar and gone to jail. Her father hated working alone, so he gave her a lev-suit and forced her to become his sidekick, Sneak Thief. For the next two years, she’d lived in a constant state of terror as they used their suits in nighttime bank robberies.

Finally, Meg could take no more. She told her father she’d robbed her last bank. Enraged, Gerald beat her so badly, he had to take her to the hospital before he robbed the bank he’d targeted. Cougar and Lynx caught him that very night.

Bankbuster’s conviction freed Meg from her life of crime, but it also left her with a very big problem. Her mother was dead, and the money Gerald had left in an offshore bank wouldn’t last long. Though she was old enough to go out on her own by then, she had no way to support herself except minimum-wage jobs.

Meg briefly considered selling her own suit to the Army, but she didn’t know how it worked. Besides, admitting she had Sneak Thief’s costume wasn’t exactly a good move, given the charges hanging over her head. She had to find another way to make a living.

Irene opened her eyes and rolled her neck. A stab of pain struck her throat. She sat up and pushed her hair back. Her fingers hit her glasses. She pulled them off and found they had been fixed. “What the hell?”

Glancing around, she discovered she’d woken up in a room not her own. Dark blue walls were hung with pictures of the ocean and cliffside vistas. One was so huge it made it seem like she looked out a window. And yet she couldn’t find any windows. A bed large enough to sleep four people took up most of the room. What the fuck happened? She took off her glasses and inspected them to make sure they were hers. She ran her hands over the wall, looking for any crack that could be a door. After going over the whole room, she knocked on the walls to hear if any were hollow. With nothing but hurting knuckles, she slammed her fist on a bare spot on the wall.

“Let me out of here,” she screamed.

“Enough with the yelling. I have a headache as it is,” a male voice came over a speaker.

“Who are you and what are you going to do with me?” Irene scanned the room looking for a speaker.

Something clicked and a portion of the wall popped out. Someone hovered in the hallway. “Come on. We have a few things to discuss before you can go.” She recognized Ace’s voice.

Irene followed the rocker. Posters of old concerts from Buddy Holly, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors, Madonna, all from different eras of music and mixed with framed golden records lined the hallway. As she ran after him, all she could stare at was his ass in those leather pants. “Mr. Hendrix, how did I end up here?”

He turned down the hall and Irene rushed to catch up with him. He turned another corner. She found him as he grabbed a bottle of water from a fridge that blended in with the cabinets around it. He flung himself down onto a sofa and gestured for her to take a seat across from him.

Irene sank down into the couch. Records, CDs, cassette tapes, anything music-related lined the bookshelves around the room. “You have quite a music collection.”

His gaze roamed around the room and a slight smile came on his face. “Thanks. I’ve been collecting for a long time. Music’s always been my escape. Would you like some water?”

“Sure. Thanks.”

He tossed the bottle of water at her. It hit the back of the couch next to her and bounced onto the seat. “Sorry. Like I said I’m getting over the hangover from last night.”

“About last night. How did I get here? Back at your house? Where’s my friend?”

“What’s the last thing you remember?”

She squeezed the bridge of her nose, trying to recall what happened. Her head pounded as she tried to draw forth the memories after she waited in line with Bev for Ace. “My glasses got knocked off and trampled. You picked them up and your assistant gave me and Bev backstage passes.” A spear of pain sliced her temple. She tried to pull up more. It remained out of her reach. “I don’t know.” She ran her fingers over her jeans as a thought passed through her head. “We didn’t… ahh…”

“Fuck?” he asked.

Her cheeks burned at his language. “Yeah.”

“No, we didn’t. After you wandered into my dressing room, you fainted. Nicole, my assistant, brought in my doctor. He said you’d passed out from having too much to drink. I thought it best to have you brought back here to sleep it off where no one’d bother you. We put you in the guestroom to sleep it off. I can have my car take you wherever you need to go.”

Irene sipped the water and thought back to being with Bev before the show. “I didn’t have anything to drink.”

“You sure? Maybe your friend slipped you something. It’d account for you thinking your glasses were broken.”

“They were. You picked them up for me.”

“You stumbled and dropped them right in front of me, but they weren’t broken.”

Nothing of what he said made any sense to her. Irene tried to rack her mind at what happened the night before. The ache hit her temple again. She winced. “No… I…”

“Look, you’re awake. You seem fine to me. Now, I have a life to get back to. It was very nice to meet you. I’ll have my driver take you home. Come on.”

Ace got up and walked out of the room. Irene sat trying to make sense of what he’d said. This doesn’t sound right. If I passed out, then Bev would’ve wormed her way into coming with me, playing at being nursemaid. She squeezed her eyes shut and recalled clearly her glasses had been broken. They went backstage with Nicole, and then she had tried to find the restroom. And then… she walked into Ace’s dressing room, but he was…

“What the hell was he doing?” Irene whispered.

At the fire station, Cosmir stripped out of his bunker gear and hung it up, leaving his steel-toed boots under the coat and pants. In his bare feet, he went to the bathroom, stopping long enough to get his shampoo and shower gel, and lucked into getting one of the shower stalls. After being surrounded by flames, the cool water felt good on his heated skin. He braced a lavender hand on the tiled wall and let the water sluice over his head and down his back. It didn’t take long to scrub his hair and body, and he had to admit he felt a million times better when he was finished. With a towel wrapped around his waist, he went to his locker and pulled on a fresh uniform.

“So,” Jake said. “This was your first major fire since joining the department. I’d say you’ve been a lucky bastard that all the major fires have happened on the other shift, but you seemed to enjoy running into that building. Still think this is the life you want?”

Cosmir grinned. “Definitely. Even if I did only rescue kittens this time, it still felt nice to make a difference. I’m used to defending my world, protecting those weaker than me when needed. When I realized I was going to make Earth my semi-permanent home, I knew I wanted a job where I could make a difference.”

“You were a warrior though, right? Why not become a cop?”

“I actually know someone who did exactly that, but it didn’t feel like a good fit for me. I don’t want to see the worst of humanity every day. Yes, some of the fires we go to were set on purpose, but mostly they’re accidents.”

“Can I ask you something?”

“I guess it depends. Are you going to ask if aliens are anatomically the same as humans? Because I’ve heard that one a lot.”

Jake snickered. “No, but I’m hoping you are. Your kind has a mating instead of a marriage right?”

Cosmir nodded.

“And you mate for life?”

“Yes, but you’re not my type.”

Jake’s smile broadened. “No worries. You aren’t my type either. But… I think you just may be perfect for –“

“Jake!”

Cosmir turned toward the very feminine voice and nearly swallowed his tongue when he saw the ebony haired beauty heading their way. The sway of her hips drew his gaze as she sauntered toward them on metallic colored sandals. Her shorts rode low on her hips and left little to the imagination. Where had this goddess been in his entire life?

“Caitlyn. What are you doing at the station?” Jake asked.

“I can’t just surprise my big brother when I’m in the area?” Her gaze scanned Cosmir before a naughty smile flitted across her lips. Before he had time to react, she threw her arms around his neck and planted a kiss on his mouth.

Her tongue flicked his lower lip and he opened to let her in. The taste of her exploded on his tongue and he couldn’t help but wrap his arms around her waist, pulling her tighter against him. Warning bells were going off in his head that he was in danger of imminent meltdown, but damn, the woman could kiss!

She pulled away, a satisfied grin on her face as she turned to face Jake again.

Jake shook his head. “Well, since you’re here, I’d like to introduce you to Cosmir. He’s the Terran I’ve mentioned before.” His lips tipped up on one corner. “Besides, you might as well know the name of the man you just swapped spit with. Don’t you usually at least get their names first?”

Caitlyn held out a dainty hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

As Cosmir’s hand folded around hers, he felt a jolt that started in his chest and rapidly moved below the belt. Her blue eyes gazed up at him while a gentle smile curved her lips. She was breathtaking, and suddenly he didn’t have a clue what to say. Odd. It wasn’t like he’d never been around women, even if it had been nearly a year since he’d been intimate with one. “The pleasure is all mine,” he rumbled, finally finding his tongue, and quite reluctant to let go of her hand.

“I haven’t seen you at any of Jake’s parties,” Caitlyn said. “Not much of a party animal?”

Cosmir smiled. “Not really.” But if she was going to be at those parties, he’d have to make an effort to be there. Watching her smile was worth a little suffering.

“You have antennas.” Kilana peered closely at the man who was resting rather comfortably beside her on her bed. Somehow, he made the huge California King feel like a college dorm twin.

“And you do not,” he helpfully pointed out, with a black-lipped grin that made his spiky white teeth look all the more deadly.

And, of all things, his long black hair was tied back into a braid that seemed to snake around his firm, pale body. His eyes were a solid black, too, and she was sure if she weren’t so hung over, she would probably be screaming bloody murder right about now.

And the man was naked.

There was only one explanation for this phenomenon. She was still drunk.

“I’m going to close my eyes and count to ten,” she whispered, her head not willing to take even the shock of her own voice raised to a normal conversational tone. “And when I open them, you are not going to be here. Do you understand?”

He nodded his head sadly, pouting a bit. But she hardened her heart. She didn’t have time for imaginary beings in her bed. She was a newly divorced woman, and she had things to do.

Like maybe wake up sober and get her divorce papers framed and gilded.

She peered at him again and had to blink fast and swallow hard. He had the biggest eyes she had ever seen. Those large, liquid eyes were solid black; there was no white at all.

It appeared that all the white seemed to have leaked out into his pale skin. It was kind of a molten silver, rather uncommon but certainly not too abnormal for a figment.

But his head nodding was making her dizzy.

“Don’t nod.” She swallowed again, holding onto a moan with the persistence of a clinging vine of ivy. “You’re making me seasick. God, you’d think that my own figment wouldn’t be so monochromatic as to cause seasickness. I thought I had more imagination.”

So she closed her eyes, inhaled softly, exhaled long, and started counting.

One figment two many. Three reasons to never drink again four any reason. Five senses going crazy, and six is the devil’s number to remind me to stick to seven, heaven’s number, unless it is the number of tequila shots. I should not have eight the worm thing last night and nine martinis are more than enough, especially at ten dollars a glass.”

She opened her eyes, but the very pale and very monochromatic creature was still lying next to her in bed.

“You’re still here,” she moaned, dropping her head back onto the pillows.

“Yes, I am,” he replied, before reaching out with one finger — one finger with the longest black fingernail she had ever seen. “And I will be here for a while.”

He tapped her on the nose, and she knew her eyes were crossing as she stared at his finger, but that was one awesomely sharp-looking talon.

“Doing what?” she asked, wondering if it was insanity to talk to an obviously drug-induced creature from her boring imagination.

Maybe someone had slipped her Special K. Ketamine was said to produce very believable hallucinations in users. Maybe someone had slipped her some and had their wicked way with her prone, helpless body.

Then again, maybe not.

She thought about it for a second, and none of her girl parts seemed particularly sore. Her va-jay-jay felt normal and unused as usual. No odd taste in her mouth, other than stale beer and regret —

“I am hunting.”

“Yeah.” She scrunched her nose and thought for a moment. “That makes sense. Hunting, in my bed, while totally naked. Yes, that makes perfect sense.”

He remained silent and smiling, showing off that mouth filled with fangs.

“Okay, no, it doesn’t.” She winced at the lancing pain in her head. “What exactly are you supposed to be hunting in my bed at –” She glanced out the window, noting it was still night. “–o-dark-thirty? Tell me that, Mr. Monochromatic Figment of My Imagination.”

“I am not a figment.” He stopped smiling. “And my coloring is very nice for my people. It is considered very attractive.”

“I’ve hurt my figment’s feelings.” She groaned, rolled over and closed her eyes again in an attempt to make him go away. But when she opened her eyes, he was still there and waiting to speak.

“I don’t have feelings in the way that you mean.” He pouted prettily.

“Of course not,” she allowed, wondering when she had actually slipped around the bend into insanity.

“And I am not a figment. I am a Scrimtat from Veta Belga.”

“Scrimtat, sure,” she spoke around a yawn. “I can tell by your very black lips and your very black hair.”

“My tongue is black, too. See?” And he stuck out the longest black, forked tongue this side of a freak show.

“I can see why I dreamed you up.” Her voice went thready. “Each fork in your tongue operates individually?”

She had to know. There were so many things she could imagine him doing with that…
