Excerpt from Dark Before Dawn

Night fell upon the longest stretch of lonely road Aaron had ever traveled. He’d stopped about an hour ago to ask directions from an elderly man walking a wolf-dog. Aaron generally wasn’t afraid of animals, but the way this canine had snarled and growled, its eyes blazing and fangs flashing, Aaron had been wary. Unfortunately the old man hadn’t been much friendlier than the dog, but he’d given Aaron curt directions to the nearest highway. At least he’d told Aaron it was the fastest route. About ten minutes ago he’d turned down a dirt road, past an iron gate the old man had described. Now he wasn’t so sure the directions were accurate. Maybe the old dude had decided to play a trick on an obvious city guy. Aaron looked like he belonged deep in the country about as much as the wolf-dog belonged in a city park.

The night grew darker and Aaron started to worry. He was nearly out of gas and the car was making a strange grating sound, not to mention the check engine light had turned on seconds ago. He’d been driving since six o’clock in the morning and that was after a measly four hours of sleep. If the car didn’t die first, Aaron might end up falling asleep behind the wheel. He was torn between pulling over to get some rest and continuing a little farther to see if the turnoff for the highway was nearby after all. Then fate made the decision for him. The damn car choked and died.

Cursing, Aaron tried to start it, but it refused to move. Finally he sighed, folded his arms on the wheel and rested his head on them. He closed his eyes.

“I’ll only relax for a minute,” he said. He’d just started zoning out when he jumped awake.

Was he crazy?

He couldn’t sit here in the middle of a dark road. If someone happened to drive by, they’d crash into him.

Groaning, he stepped out of the car and pushed it to a safer position along the side of the road. By now it was so dark that his hazards were the only light in the area. He wished he’d charged his cell phone battery before leaving the hotel. At least then he could call for help. Before leaving on his business trip, he’d accidentally left his car phone charger in his second vehicle. An hour into his journey he realized he’d forgotten it, but he’d decided not to turn back for it. Now he wished he had. An hour of inconvenience would have saved him hours, maybe even a night, in the woods of northeast USA. Even better, why hadn’t he simply flown?

Seated behind the wheel, he set his chair to a full recline position and, using his black sports jacket as a blanket, settled down to rest.

Aaron felt like he’d just drifted off when banging on his window roused him.

He jumped up, his heart pounding, and stared at a slim, dark-haired man standing near his car.

“Hey,” the guy shouted, his voice muffled through the closed window. “You can’t stay here.”

His brow furrowed, Aaron opened the window partway and said, “I don’t have much choice. My car died and my cell is out of batteries. Do you have a phone by any chance?”

The guy closed his eyes and shook his head. “I don’t believe this. This is private property.”

“You own the road?” Aaron asked, raising a suspicious eyebrow.

“Road? Mister, this is my driveway. Didn’t you see the gate at the end?”

“Yeah.”

“So you just opened it and drove on through?” the guy asked, a harsh edge to his voice.

Curling his lip, Aaron said, “No. It was wide open.”

“Open?”

“Yeah, so I didn’t realize it was private property.” Aaron sighed and shook his head. “Besides the old guy with the wolf dog said this would take me to the highway.”

“Old guy with the wolf dog? That’s Mr. Seymour. He’s a little nuts. I wouldn’t doubt it if he opened the damn gate.”

“I’m sorry for trespassing, but –“

“Any other time I wouldn’t care if you parked all night. Just not tonight.”

“I told you –“

“I know. I know. Well, you can’t stay here. It’s not safe.”

Now Aaron became suspicious. What was this guy up to? “Why?” he asked.

“There’s a private hunting party going on. You might get hurt and I don’t want to be responsible.”

“Then how about either letting me use a phone or calling a ride for me?”

The man stared at him for a long moment. The flashing hazard lights cast eerie shadows on his face, but he seemed to be quite handsome with fabulous cheekbones, a long, slender nose and wide set eyes. Aaron couldn’t tell exactly what color they were, but they looked light.

“All right,” the guy said. “My cabin isn’t far. You can come with me.”

Excerpt

Smoothing back her chestnut hair, I savored the feel of her against me. I wanted her, fiercely, but I was just as content to hold her. Della, however, had other ideas.

Curling her fingers in my hair, she pulled my head down and placed her lips against mine. The pressure was slight, a barely there kiss, but it was enough to ignite my hunger for her, making me ravenous to feel more of her. I licked at her bottom lip, and when she opened, I plundered her mouth, deepening the kiss. She tasted salty-sweet, and I knew she’d been eating pretzels and drinking her favorite soda, something she did often. Her hand tugged on my hair as she tried to get closer to me, and I tightened my arm around her waist. Kissing Della was every bit as wonderful as I’d remembered and I didn’t want to stop, but one of us needed to act rationally. If I didn’t stop now, she’d end up naked, bent over the arm of the sofa while I pounded into her sweet heat from behind.

I hadn’t thought it possible, but my cock grew even harder, straining against the zipper of my pants. Pulling back, reluctantly, I looked down into her upturned face. Her eyes were still closed, her lips plump from my kiss. Her eyes fluttered open and the passion blazing in their depths nearly took me to my knees. It seemed that delicious Della wanted me as much as I wanted her. Part of me wanted to throw her over my shoulder, run away with her, and bring her pleasure unlike any she’d ever known before, all night long. The part of my brain that was thinking clearly said it was best to take things slow and see where things went. Because deep down, I knew that one time would never be enough, not with her.

Her hand slid down my neck, then down my chest, coming to rest at the waistband of my pants. It would be oh-so-easy for her pop that button free and slide my zipper down, reach inside and see just what she did to me. I knew her sexual experience was limited and doubted she’d be so bold, but I could hope. Just one touch and I’d go up in flames. One touch is all it would take for her to claim me for her own. That thought shook a bit of sense into me, and I took a step back. She looked hurt by my retreat, but it was better this way.

“You aren’t safe here,” I told her. “Not by yourself.”

“If you’re my guardian, then you know I don’t have any family nearby. It isn’t like I can go stay with my sister. She’s all the way across the country in Atlanta.”

She was right. She had no family in sunny Southern California and very few friends. Surely one of them would put her up, though, at least long enough for me to sort out this problem. I just needed a game plan. It seemed the only way to send the Surack packing was to claim Della as mine, but I knew that it would the biggest step I’d ever taken, something that would change my life forever. And forever for a demon was a really long time.

“What about your friends?”

“Richard is currently seeing someone, and while I doubt Troy would mind me staying with them, it would just be awkward. They’re still in the first stage of romance, where you can’t keep your hands off one another. Melanie is expecting and dealing with her deadbeat boyfriend, who won’t take responsibility for the child or make an honest woman of her. Personally, I think she’s better off without him, but she’s a basket case.”

I tipped my head back and studied the ceiling, as if seeking answers where there were none. The weight of my decision settled on my shoulders as I realized what I had to do. It would be the hardest thing ever. Well, technically, at the moment, my cock was the hardest thing ever, but that was a complication I’d have to learn to deal with in the upcoming days.

“Pack a bag,” I told her.

“I just told you I had nowhere to go.”

“You’re coming home with me.”

COMING JULY 26!

EXCERPT

I caressed the soft, supple skin of the woman I’d chained to the wall of my room. She wasn’t just any woman though. No, she was my charge, the one woman I was sworn to protect, and what better way than to make sure she had my undivided attention? Larissa had caught me in the act of protecting her when a man attempted to rob her at knife point, and she demanded that I take her with me when I returned to Hell. So here we were.

I’d watched over her for years, and had been tempted nearly every day. Until now, I wouldn’t have dared to touch her, but recent events had shown that it wasn’t quite as frowned upon as I’d once thought. Watching her date one faithless man after another, knowing they were going to hurt her in the end, hadn’t been easy. It was, after all, my job to protect her. And I took my job very seriously.

Larissa was different from the others I’d protected in the past. There was something about her that called to me, something that made her special. At first, I’d thought it was merely my drive to fuck her senseless, but now I wondered if it wasn’t, perhaps, something more. I’d never realized that a demon could have feelings other than lust and anger, but I felt something for the woman before me. I couldn’t put a name to it, but I definitely felt something.

The light lovingly caressed her and my cock hardened even further. I wondered if once would be enough with Larissa, or would it take many times before my lust would be sated? Her scent alone was driving me mad, having her helpless and at my mercy only increased my desire for her.

I’d always been dominant in the bedroom, but the sight of her shackled, ready and waiting for me, was enough to make me want to rip the chains from the wall and throw her on the bed. But I wouldn’t do that. No, what I was doing would serve a purpose. It was something she needed, even if she didn’t realize it.

She stood there, shackled, so trusting. I’d been surprised when she’d given in to me so easily, being a natural fighter. Being bound in any way went against her very nature, and yet here she was, putting her faith in me not to harm her. While I’d known her for years, she’d just met me today. She should’ve been more cautious, especially with me being a demon, but that only seemed to intrigue her further.

A fine sheen of sweat coated her skin, and I leaned forward to lick a path from her shoulder to her neck. She tasted so sweet. I trailed my hand from her neck down her spine to her ass, loving the contrast of her fair skin and my blue tinge. My whole body was blue with intricate black tattoos covering my neck, arms and torso. All Tinta demons looked like me, and we were each sworn to protect one special woman. And Larissa was certainly special.

“What do you want?” I asked, nipping her ear.

“I want you to make me yours.”
