Author QA

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

I’m a mom and I work two jobs. My daughter has some health challenges that inspired what happens to Chessa, the heroine’s teenage daughter. Taking care of my family is my top priority, but my soul needs and craves the release of writing. This is my therapy. Every time I write a book, I know I am asking strangers to invest the precious leisure time they scrape out of the day and a part of his or her entertainment budget. I want to write the best book I can for that amazing person who is giving me such a big gift. Being a writer is like getting a hug from a stranger every day. I want to hug them back by crafting a story worth reading. As a reader, I take solace in the escape into a story. If the author’s work is subpar, my experience suffers. I don’t want that for my readers. I know how essential the reading experience is to the soul. I can’t do much to make the world better than I found it, but I hope my books can enhance someone’s life each day.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I’ve been an avid reader since I was eleven. The summer I turned twelve I pestered everyone to bring me to the library, but no one would. We lived in the country and it was a trek to the nearest library. My grandmother dumped a huge bag of harlequin romances at my feet and said, “There’s your library.” Looking back I’m shocked she’d corrupt me like that, but I was hooked on romance quickly. I’ve been devouring every romance novel I can get my hands on ever since. A year later I decided I could write a romance novel. Imagine The Blue Lagoon meets Star Wars, it was terrible, but my cousins loved it. They were my first fans and encouraged me to keep writing. When I was thirty I had the standard, I’m not immortal epiphany. I decided it was time to find a publisher and I did. I’ve had over sixty stories published in the last seven years, but this is my first self-published book. Anything else I’ve self-published was a reprint when my rights reverted back. What I love about writing is that I am never able to say I’ve mastered it. My prose improves with every book. I love the challenge of topping the last book. I never compete with anyone but myself.
This book is part of a series tell us about your series.

This is the first book in my Moonlight Series. I’ve created a small Wisconsin town where most of the residence are werewolves. I’ve combined some old Indian legends and fringe archeology to give my werewolves an interesting creation myth. In this series, if you’re bitten by a werewolf you die unless you have a werewolf ancestor on the family tree. The series highlights several couples and the struggles they have for survival and love, but Law Foster and Bianca Archer are in every book. Bianca’s awakening to the truth of Wild Rose Valley is the heart of this series. I really love these characters and I hope you do too.

EXCERPT

Bringing Bellamy flowers was a little awkward with such a large audience. All of her sisters were present, along with a handful of other raven shifters. If this didn’t go well, he’d be the laughingstock of the community for weeks to come. He only had to hope that she’d felt something the other day, too. He thought he’d caught a flash of something in her eyes as she’d looked at him, but he might’ve been wrong. There was only one way to find out. Man up and approach her.

As he neared the small group huddled around his target, the talking died down to a minimum. The young shifter behind Bellamy narrowed his eyes and set his jaw, clearly wanting to stake his claim. Seaton wondered just how close the two were. Did he have real competition there? Or was the young man just fantasizing? Getting a good look at him, he realized it was Rio, a raven known for his penchant of getting into trouble. He had to be a few years younger than Bellamy, didn’t he? She seemed older, anyway. Not that her age mattered one whit to Seaton.

He paused beside her chair and waited until he had her attention. When she looked up at him, he presented her with the bouquet he’d picked up on his way over. Her smile lit up her face as she accepted the blossoms, inhaling their scent.

“Thank you, Seaton. They’re lovely.”

“You’re welcome. I thought I’d come by and see how you were doing.”

One of the girls pulled away from the group and dragged a chair over for him. He settled himself and placed his elbows on his knees, studying Bellamy. With the sun kissing her tanned skin, she looked like a goddess. The scent of suntan lotion drifted to him on a breeze, mingled with what he knew was Bellamy’s own unique scent. It was an intriguing mixture.

“I’m doing well, thank you.” She smiled. “I never got a chance to properly thank you and the other trackers.”

“No thanks were needed. We were tasked with a job and we did it. I’m just glad we found you before something bad happened to you.” He paused. “We did find you before then, right?”

“Yes. He merely yelled and threatened before you showed up. I have no doubt he would’ve harmed me if you hadn’t arrived when you did, though. I really do owe you and your friends my life. Is there anything I can do to repay you?”

This wasn’t exactly how he’d planned to ask, but he’d take what he could get.

“There is one thing.”

“Name it.”

“Go to dinner with me, tomorrow night.”

Her eyes widened slightly. “Dinner? As in a date?”

Seaton nodded. “Yes, I’d very much like to take you out on a date.”

A delighted smile curved her lips. “I can’t think of anything I’d like more. What time should I be ready?”

“Say, seven?”

“Seven sounds perfect.”

He rose. “I’ll let you get back to your pool party. I didn’t mean to intrude. If I’d have thought about it, I’d have called ahead to make sure it was okay to stop by. In the future, I won’t drop by unannounced.”

“We have an open door policy here,” Bellamy told him. “Stop by any time you want. I seldom go out so you can find me by the pool or reading in the sunroom most days.”

“Well, we’ll just have to do something about that. Can’t have you cooped up in the house all day every day.”

One of the girls snorted. “If you can get Bells out of the house, more power to you. We invite her to the movies or out for ice cream all the time, but she almost always turns us down.”

“She even turned down my invitation to the bookstore the other day, and everyone knows how much she loves to read,” another said.

“Well, I do believe I’ve just been challenged. I’ll have to come up with something that lures you out of the house,” he told Bellamy.

“If anyone can do it, I’m sure it will be you.” Her cheeks flushed. “I look forward to seeing you at dinner tomorrow.”

He lifted her hand and kissed the backs of her fingers. “Until then.”

Excerpt:
Elodie Conway was nothing like he had expected. As he ate
her signature cake, all Jason wanted to do was savor her lips and run his hands down her very ample hips. Hers was a body a man could hold onto during sex and not break her. His wolf was awakened, and it prowled just beneath the surface.
What Jason saw, he liked. Very much indeed…
The chocolate wound through his system, and with each bite,
all other preoccupying thoughts faded into nothing. Images of him thrusting deep inside of her and winding his fist in her mane of dark hair flashed in front of his eyes, and he almost choked. His hands trembled as they reached for the bottle of water she’d set in front of him.
What the hell was that?
He twisted the cap and drank the entire small bottle in one go. As a journalist, he had little time for romance. A quick tumble in the
moonlight during one of his runs, maybe, but this girl was something
special––he didn’t know why he didn’t notice it before. Jason took another bite of cake and shifted his weight as his erection made its presence known. He could take her here, right over the top of the table, her heart-shaped ass in the air as he sank his cock deep in her pussy and fucked her until she screamed his name.
His wolf liked the idea. A whole fucking lot. Jason laid down the fork and smiled. Standing up on shaking legs, he picked up his now empty plate. Things were about to get interesting. This wasn’t just any woman.
He raised his nose to the air and scented her.
Mate.
She was his fucking mate. How could he have been so blind?
Did it take a hard-on for his wolf to get through to him? Apparently, because his wolf was ready to claim her by any means necessary, even it meant fucking her over the top of one of her own tables.

Disgruntled by his attraction, Micah Smythe feels the pull but isn’t willing to bite. Bridget is irrational, mouthy, and temperamental. So why does his body respond every time she’s near? He’s declared her off limits, but the more time he spends with her, the harder it is to keep his hands to himself.

EXCERPT

“How could you…!” Bridget screamed into the wind as the storm raged around her, knowing damn well with his sensitive wolf hearing, she could have whispered. “You sent my fiancé running scared! We were about to say our vows, you asshole!”

Bridget stood outside the church, her white dress feeling like it weighed fifty pounds as the rain pelted down, soaking her. A gust of wind wrenched off her veil and sent it into the nearby gutter, dirty water destroying it on contact.

“You aren’t marrying him,” Micah said, a growl to his voice.

“Why?” she asked, the anger draining away as her shoulders sagged. “Why would you ruin my life this way? I was happy, damn it!”

“You don’t belong with him.”

“I don’t belong with you,” she yelled. “Go back to your pack. You aren’t welcome in my life!”

Bridget struck hard, making contact with his cheek. Holding her hand to her chest, she turned on her heels and stormed back into the church, the heavy doors slamming shut behind her. Five of the groomsmen formed a line, blocking Micah from following her. His hands clenched at his sides as he bared his teeth at them.

“Move!” he demanded.

The eldest of the groomsmen, a bear-shifter of some sort, shook his head. “You heard her. I think it’s time for you to leave.”

Micah’s ears pricked as he listened for sounds inside the church. Over the crowd of wedding attendees, he heard Bridget crying. He hadn’t meant to upset her, but there was no way he could allow her to marry some random guy. She hadn’t even been with the loser more than a month. Who the hell married someone they’d only been dating a month? He would have stopped her sooner, but he’d only heard about the wedding that morning.

“This isn’t over,” he told them. “You know I was right to stop the wedding. She doesn’t belong with that puny paper-pusher. She just thinks she wants a man she can control.”

Autumn stared at the man in front of her. She’d heard the whispers in the pack and knew he’d gotten the scars on his face and arms from the demon attack several months before. The Ashton Grove pack had reached out to other packs seeking both men and women to grow their numbers after losing so many. Having lost her mate to a drunk driver, Autumn had taken the chance for a new start.

“Do you know why you’re here?” Gabriel asked.

“Aislinn told me to come here,” she answered softly.

“She seems to think you have a problem. If that’s true, why didn’t you go to Connor with the issue?”

“I don’t have a problem. I pay my rent on time and attend the pack functions. I promise I haven’t caused any trouble.”

His gaze softened. “No one said you were troublesome. They just think something is wrong. Have you had problems with anyone in the pack? Maybe a male who’s being too persistent?”

She shook her head.

“Perhaps one of the females has taken issue with you?”

She shook her head again.

Gabriel sighed. “Well, something has to be going on. Aislinn wouldn’t have sent you here if she didn’t have a reason.”

“I don’t want to cause any problems. I’ll pack my things tonight.” Autumn fought back tears, but one slipped down her cheek.

“Hey,” Gabriel said softly. “Easy, Autumn. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

He placed his hands on her shoulders, but she needed more comfort than that. She couldn’t remember the last time a man had touched her so gently. With a broken sob, she melted against him, wrapping her arms around his waist. At first, his arms held her loosely, as if he didn’t know what to do with her. But after a moment, he tightened his embrace and held her close. A hand stroked her hair.

Autumn knew she needed to pull herself together. It wasn’t the alpha’s fault she was crying. Living with her mate had broken her in some way. She’d thought his death would free her, but she couldn’t have been more wrong.

With a sniffle, she eased her arms from around him and took a step back, wiping the tears from her cheeks. Gabriel reached out and caught a stray tear as it dropped from her eyelashes.

“Better now?” he asked.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…” She didn’t even know how to finish that thought. She didn’t mean to be so weak? To cry all over him? To disturb the solitude she knew he wanted? Maybe she was apologizing for all of it.

“It’s okay. Sometimes you just need to let it all out.”

Moonlight Drifter (Ashton Grove Werewolves)

A new bonus novella is available in the Ashton Grove Werewolves series!

Allie Jenson has drifted from one pack to another, ever since her family died. She thinks she might have finally found a home with the Ashton Grove pack, but her life is not easy. She has a job she hates, and none of the males want her for more than sex – not that she’s giving it up. When were-tiger Cain Boudreaux takes it upon himself to “save” her from a handsy customer, by claiming her in front of their packmates no less, things get a little out of hand. He’s rude, chauvinistic, and totally not her type. Well, maybe he’s not completely not her type. He does have that tall, dark, and sexy thing going on. And that Cajun accent slides across her skin like warm silk. But what in the heck is she going to do with a man who thinks her place is barefoot and in the kitchen?

EXCERPT

Lightning skittered across the sky, the brilliant flashes lighting up everything around her. Thunder boomed overhead, shaking the earth beneath her feet. The high-powered winds whipped her long, red hair around her head and made her fight for purchase on the pavement. It was a bad night out, for witches and mortals alike. If only she hadn’t lost her damn wand! What was a witch without her wand? Damn near mortal, that’s what. The heavens were going to open up at any moment and she would be drenched. Taking a witch’s wand was as good as stealing her powers. No, she didn’t need the wand to create magick, but if it wasn’t in her possession, her powers sort of…fizzled and died out.

Her high-heeled sandals were a poor choice of footwear at the moment, as she tottered down the sidewalk, following the beacon of light in the distance. She’d cast a locator spell in hopes of finding her wayward wand. She wasn’t certain if it had been appropriated by someone, or had merely wandered off, kind of like her broom had done the month before. Anyone who thought a wand was an inanimate object was a fool. It had a life force of its own. Otherwise, it would just be a piece of wood with pretty carvings.

The beam of light shooting into the sky started to flicker, and she worried it would sputter out completely. She could tell it was in the area the residents of Mayfair Heights called “the jungle.” Only shape-shifters lived in that part of town. Despite the ominous clouds in the sky, she knew there was a full moon tonight. She just had to hope whoever had taken the wand, or the lucky person her wand had chosen as its guardian, was in residence. It would be just her luck that the furball would be out on a run, even if the weather did leave a lot to be desired.

With the wind buffeting her small body, she felt like she was fighting an uphill battle, and wondered if she’d ever reach her destination. If her powers weren’t on the fritz, she could just translocate to wherever she needed to go. But, of course, on the worst night they’d had in months, she was stuck traveling on foot. She couldn’t even use her broom until she was at full power again. The damn thing refused to work. She completely blamed the tree sprite, the one who had gifted her with the branch used to carve the broom handle. It had obviously imbued some of its stubbornness into her broom.

Breena rounded another corner and sighed in relief. The home she sought was half a block away and lit up like the fourth of July, thanks to her little spell. She thanked the goddess that it had worked so well, or at all, for that matter. She couldn’t imagine having to find her wand the old-fashioned way, or having to hire someone else to cast the spell for her. How embarrassing! It was bad enough that things like this kept happening to her, but if the spell-casters guild caught wind of it, they’d pull her license to practice for sure.

As she neared the home, she took in the little details, like the gargoyles standing guard at the edges of the roof. She had no doubt they were the real thing and gave them a little wave. The red door stood out in stark contrast against the gray and black home, beckoning her closer. She stepped under the portico just as the rain began to beat down, a deluge really, and she thanked the goddess she hadn’t been standing out in the open just then.

She lifted her fist and knocked on the door, listening for any sounds of life within. No answer. She banged again, this time a little harder. The light from her spell spluttered and blinked out, leaving her standing in the dark. The fact that there were no lights on in the home, nor on the porch, told her that her query was probably out running wild, but she refused to give up.

Breena’s tiny fist pounded on the door for the third time. Grumbling under her breath, she gave the wood a good, hard kick, wincing as her toes met the unforgiving surface. She had just turned, and was about to leave, when the door flew open.

“Do you have any idea what time it is?” growled a deep voice, a voice that zinged through her and made all of her lady parts take notice.

She spun around with a snappy retort on the tip of her tongue, but it died the moment she was faced with six-foot-six of yummy goodness. A button-down shirt hung open, leaving his scrumptious muscular chest in full view. Her gaze dipped down over six pack abs and she licked her lips, wanting to run her tongue over each and every inch of him.

“I’m, uh, looking for my wand,” she stuttered lamely, her brain having been fried by his hotness.

He smirked. “Oh, I have a wand for you all right, but I don’t think it’s the one you came looking for.”

EXCERPT

Brendan gave in to her kiss, but pulled back when he felt her hand rub against the hard length of his erection. “Cady, we shouldn’t.”

“Why not?” she asked, pulling him back down.

“Because … I promised I would give you time,” he answered, wondering if he was an idiot for telling her no.

“You said I could choose the time. I’m choosing,” she said as she lifted her hips, teasing him.

“You aren’t going to make this easy, are you?” he asked.

She shook her head and rubbed herself against him again. Taking his hand, she guided it between her legs. Even with the barrier of her panties, Brendan could feel how hot and wet she was; she was swollen and ready for him.

Feeling brave, Cady reached down and slipped her hand inside of Brendan’s boxers. Her fingers skimmed along his skin, feeling his shaft. Grasping him in her hand, she rubbed up and down, enjoying the feel of him in her hand.

Brendan groaned. “Cady, you’re killing me.”

Pulling him free of his boxers, she rubbed herself against him again.

“Take my panties off,” she whispered.

Brendan shook his head. “I really don’t think this is a good idea.”

With every stroke she made, Brendan lost more and more of his self-control. Slipping his thumb under her panties, he felt her swollen nub. Even if he didn’t take her right now, there was no reason she shouldn’t find her release.

As Brendan stroked her, Cady arched her body. The only thing that would have made her feel better would have been having him inside of her.

Reaching between their bodies, she pulled her panties aside, her fingers brushing the back of his hand as he pleasured her. Grasping his thick length in her hand, she lifted her hips. She felt the head of his cock against her opening and whimpered, wanting more.

Brendan gritted his teeth. Feeling her wet heat and knowing that with just the slightest shift of his hips he could be inside of her was driving him mad. But he had promised to win her trust and that’s what he was going to do… even if it killed him.

Brendan flicked his thumb over her sensitive nub over and over. The closer Cady got to an orgasm the wilder she became. With a quick jerk of her hips, she managed to draw him part-way into her.

Brendan sucked in a breath and held still. He watched as Cady tossed her head from side to side. Her hips shifted so that he slid in and out of her body, causing just enough friction to send her over the edge. She thrust her hips one last time and cried out her release.

Spent, she collapsed onto the bed, her breath coming out in heavy pants.

Brendan allowed himself to slide from her body. He knew he’d have to go to the bathroom and take care of himself, but it wouldn’t be the same. He was still wet from her juices and so turned on he thought he might explode.

“Why didn’t you take me?” she asked.

“Because it wasn’t the right time,” he answered.

Cady reached for him, but Brendan drew back.

“If you touch me right now, I won’t be able to control myself,” he said. He bent down and kissed her before rolling out of the bed. Tucking his cock back into his boxers, he grabbed some clean clothes and beat a hasty retreat to the bathroom.
