Kat followed her men, feeling incredibly relaxed and happy. All of her worries about Schoengraff, the wedding, and her future at Tracy Electric felt like they had been trapped behind a thick, clear wall. She knew they were still there, of course, but they didn’t plague her at all.

And seeing both Friedrich and Sam’s trousers bulging from the kissing and canoodling in the hubble-bubble den was doing wonderful things to her own desire. As soon as the car started moving Sam fell on the colonel like a hungry beast, mashing their mouths together and driving his tongue between Friedrich’s lips. His hand snaked down, cupping the German’s undoubtedly aching cock and squeezing it.

It seemed only right to join in. She leaned closer to Friedrich, pressing her breast against his arm as she nibbled and sucked on his earlobe, whispering filthy things into his ear. He gave Sam a last kiss and turned to her, groaning as she undid a button on his shirt and slid her fingers inside to caress the skin there.

Sam moved back in, biting at Friedrich’s neck then soothing the sting with a lick. A fleeting thought crossed Kat’s mind, a wish to have both of her beautiful men naked and in bed with her. All three of them creating a tangle of bodies and limbs, so close that no one could tell where one ended and another began, and to hell if it shocked all of Bridgeport and its stuffy, stodgy society.

At some point the car stopped and the door opened, Horst looming in the opening. The next thing Kat knew they were up in the suite. How, she had no idea, but she was absolutely delighted by it. She led her men into her bedroom, kicking off her shoes as she went.

Laughing, Friedrich fell on Sam, pushing him into the bed and kissing him greedily, opening his mouth to the American’s. “You feel so good,” he said softly, dropping soft kisses over the other man’s chin, cheeks, nose. “Why do you feel so damned good?”

“I don’t know, but I’m glad I do,” Sam murmured. “You feel even better, angel.”

“Mmm.” Friedrich writhed, rubbing against Sam’s lean body. “Too many clothes.”

“I can help with that,” Kat said. She started unbuttoning his shirt, laughing as her fingers fumbled on the tiny mother of pearl discs.

Friedrich stared up at her, naked adoration on his face. He lifted a hand, brushing her cheek with a tender finger that sent shivers down her spine. “You’re so beautiful, Kätzchen. So strong, like a goddess.”

Kätzchen—kitten. Tonight, she would accept that once-hated nickname, especially since he finished up by calling her a goddess. “Clothes, colonel. Let’s get you out of them.”

She quickly stripped him, leaving him naked and gorgeous on the fine sheets while Sam fumbled with his own clothes. Friedrich looked down at his magnificent cock, already hard and pearling a drop of pleasure at the tip, and laughed at it. Sam joined in, and Kat followed. Everything felt wonderful.

The men rolled into each other’s arms and started kissing again, hands roaming muscular bodies and caressing, squeezing, stroking as she watched. It was wickedly delicious, the sight of these two beautiful creatures pleasuring each other. She stripped slowly, reveling in the heightened sensation of her skin as it was exposed to the room’s cool air. She dropped her chemise, then her corselet to the carpet, peeling off the fine silk stockings last and draping them around her neck like a stole. They caught on the chain there. Mustn’t snag the stockings. There were things she could do with them, wonderfully dark and heady things.

She unhooked the chain and tossed it and the key onto the bedside table. Crawling onto the bed, she gently pushed Friedrich onto his back and away from Sam, slithering down into his arms. “My turn,” she purred.

His eyes were thin rings of blue around wide black centers, the eyes of a child on Christmas morning who had just seem the mountain of presents awaiting him. “So beautiful. You’re so beautiful.”

She stroked his cheek, feeling the fine prickle of his beard. “So are you, my colonel. The most beautiful man, isn’t he, Sam?”

“Oh, yes,” Sam said thickly, kissing his way down Friedrich’s chest. “Absolutely gorgeous.”

She wanted to kiss Friedrich again, taste his mouth, feel his tongue dancing slickly around hers as they shared breath and heat. A faint voice in the back of her head murmured something in a warning tone, something about discipline and too much indulgence. She didn’t care. She wanted this beautiful man, and she was going to have him.

“I wanted you to myself for a while,” he said.

“Alec, I… I can’t imagine why you would want to spend time with me. There’s nothing special about me.”

He urged her to sit and then sat beside her. “I beg to differ. The moment I saw you, I knew you were special. Can’t you feel it? There’s something between us.”

“Please don’t say things like that.”

“Why not?”

“Because… you’re a lord and I’m…”

“My being a lord has nothing to do with this,” he interrupted. “There’s an attraction between us. You can’t deny it.”

“No,” she said softly. “I can’t deny it.”

He reached out and caressed her cheek. “How close does someone have to be before you can see them?”

Her lips tipped up in a smile. “Our noses would practically have to touch before I could see you clearly and, even then, I couldn’t make out as much detail as most people.”

He slowly moved closer, giving her time to pull away, but she didn’t want to. She knew that she should, but she found that she was fascinated by him. He came closer, close enough that she felt the warmth of his breath on her skin. Small details came into focus. She noticed his eyes were blue, laugh lines crinkling the corners. Lines bracketed his mouth, telling her that he smiled frequently. His lips were full and she wondered what they would feel like pressed against hers. A blush heated her cheeks as she stared into his eyes.

“You’re so beautiful,” he murmured.

“No, I’m not. I’m plain, ordinary.”

His thumb smoothed over her cheekbone. “Darling, you could never be plain.”

“Alec…” Before she could finish her sentence, he kissed her, his lips gently pressing against hers. It was the first time she’d ever been kissed, and it was everything she’d ever dreamed of. Her heart was racing as she slid her palms over his chest. Even through his shirt and jacket, she could feel his heart beating, nearly as fast as hers.

He placed his other hand at her waist and pulled her closer. Their bodies pressed together, she’d never felt so close to someone before. His lips moved softly against hers and she responded. It felt strange and yet so very right. Her body was warming from the inside out. She didn’t understand what she was feeling, but she wasn’t ready to stop kissing Alec.

The Seductress by Treva Harte #Historical #Mystery #Romance#NewRelease @changelingpress

Idea Behind the Book

The Seductress is the third in my Regency mystery romance series.  I’d written one mystery in my life before that and no Regency stories. So of course I had to go ahead.

I started off thinking about how women were treated in the past and how they managed in a world where they had very limited rights —and that I wanted to do a different kind of Regency that was still historically correct.  By the time I finished The Seductress, I knew my small corner of Regency England reasonably well (not that I don’t have to look up titles and who is called what and when EVERY time I start a story or I’m in trouble.)

Emily isn’t like her sensible, previously widowed and independent cousin in the previous stories, the one who helped solve murders.  But I don’t like idiotic heroines so I had to try to make a younger, romantic girl who makes mistakes not an idiot.  She tries to be sensible when she decides to marry the titled gentleman her Mama desires for her daughter.  It’s the only way she’ll have any security in her world. And she has to be smart when the Earl she’s just accepted in marriage is found dead.   Meanwhile there’s the previously untitled, penniless hero who is under suspicion when he becomes the new Earl…

About the book:

Miss Emily Whitethorn once vowed to marry only for love, but when she finally accepts the reality that she must follow her mother’s demands and marry a titled gentleman, her plans turn to seduction. The first person on her list of eligible bachelors is Lord Northenly, the Earl who proposed to her years ago.

If only his younger and untitled half-brother Kit were less distracting, and the Earl more alluring! But everything changes when both brothers propose, only to have Lord Northenly die suddenly — after showing Emily, in a most frightening way, that she could never marry him.

Of course the current Lord Northenly’s death makes Kit both a suspect and the next Lord Northenly — and leaves Emily a suspect, as well. There’s only one solution to their immediate problem. But will a hasty marriage save them both, or prove to be their undoing?

I read a lot of different romance genres, so there’s a mix of scifi, paranormal, contemporary, and historical.

A woman on the run. A man with a tragic past. Neither are prepared for what fate holds for them.

Rescued By The Baron AMAZON LARGE

New Orleans, 1895

Pain pierced her side as her bare feet slapped against the ground, her legs churning as she ran for all she was worth. Her heart raced as she glanced over her shoulder. Lilian had escaped Madame Giselle, but she knew there were men after her, could feel their breaths on the back of her neck as they ran her to ground like a fox. It had been sheer luck that she’d managed to slip away from the owner of Louisiana’s premium brothels and auction mart. Her feet pounded harder against the unforgiving sidewalk, her lungs ached as she panted for breath. Lilian’s family may have sold her to Madame Giselle, but that didn’t mean she had to sit there and take whatever the woman dished out. She’d been complacent as long as she’d thought one single man would own her, but after hearing that she was to be housed in the main brothel as a common whore, she’d dug deep and found the courage to escape.

She raced through the streets of New Orleans, clinging to the shadows, hoping to put the infamous Storyville far behind her. Sweat beaded on her brow as she chanced another glance behind her Lilian rounded a corner and recoiled off something hard and unyielding. Losing her balance, she tumbled to the ground, her breath leaving her in a whoosh as she sprawled on the sidewalk. Just five more minutes and she would have been free! She scurried backwards, away from the outstretched hand. Momentarily dazed, she was taken aback when someone brushed the hair out of her eyes.

A man knelt beside her.

“Are you all right?” he asked, concern etched on his handsome face, his chocolate gaze holding a tinge of worry.

Lilian nodded, still unable to speak. His kind eyes took in her rumpled clothes, what there was of the barely-there dress, and he reached out to finger her long red locks. He seemed harmless enough, but it was hard to tell these days. He couldn’t be completely respectable or he wouldn’t have been walking into Storyville. What was he doing on foot anyway? His clothes were far too fine for someone who lived in the area.

“Are you in trouble? Are you running from someone?” he asked.

Before Lilian could answer, she heard shouts coming from around the corner. They were close and getting closer. If she didn’t get up and move, they’d catch her for sure.  And Lilian refused to be caught! Lilian shivered in revulsion just thinking about the fate that awaited her if she returned to Madame Giselle. A different man every night, their hot, sweaty bodies pressing her down into some filthy mattress. Her skin crawled and begged for a bath just thinking about such things.

The man glanced over her shoulder and helped Lilian to her feet. Wrapping an arm around her waist, he pulled her close. Lilian knew he was a stranger and she shouldn’t trust him, but something about him called to her. The gentleness of his touch, perhaps, or his softly spoken words. He seemed like a kind man, despite the fact he appeared to be heading into Storyville, probably looking for an evening in a whore’s bed.

With his strength surrounding her, he began to lead Lilian away from Storyville. She could still hear the men behind them, and she worried that they might cause trouble for the gentleman, and he couldn’t be anything less than with his fine manners and clothes. Lilian didn’t want him to get hurt just for being a Good Samaritan.

“Are those men after you?” he asked softly, as he helped her into a nearby carriage.

She swallowed hard. “Yes.”

Once they were settled, he tapped on the roof and the carriage lurched forward. She could hear the clip-clop of the horse’s hooves, pounding in time with her heart, as she sank back into the soft seats. The soft velvets seats of the well-sprung carriage bespoke wealth, something she’d never had and would never experience beyond this moment.

“You need to tell me why so I’ll know what I’m up against.” He studied her intently.

“I ran away from Madame Giselle.”

He didn’t look surprised, exactly, but she could tell he’d been hoping for a different answer. “You’re a…”

“Not yet. My family sold me to her last week.  She’s been grooming me for the business, but I don’t want that life. I’d rather die in the gutter somewhere than make her rich by lying on my back night after night.”

He set his jaw, a steely determination entering his eyes. “Then you won’t live that life.”

“I wouldn’t have minded so much if she had planned for me to be with just one man, but… the thought of working in one of her brothels was more than I could take.  So I ran away.”

“Well, you’re safe now. I won’t let them harm you.”

“You can’t stop them.”

“If I can’t convince them to leave you alone, I’ll just purchase you from Madame Giselle.” His gaze caressed her and she shivered.

When Skip had crossed the line into blatant flirting, Russell blushed like a girl. Skip liked the charge that came with pushing the pedal down, and—despite Lou’s opinions—he had enough self-preservation to know when to cut the gas.

Skip followed Russell to a shadowy area in the back of the parking lot, and once they were out of sight of anyone in the club, Russell brought out the flask and handed it over. Skip took a hit, the whiskey’s smoky burn warming his chest on the way down. “I got another question for you.”

Russell took the flask and raised an eyebrow.

“How come you don’t dance?” Skip was mainly curious, but the words carried more heat than he’d intended.

Russell snorted, crossing his arms over his chest in a way that made his biceps bulge. “I just don’t.”

“Maybe you need someone to teach you.” Lou would sure scold him for this one. “Maybe you just need the right person.”

Russell’s fists clenched, and for half a second, Skip thought he might haul off and punch him. Heck, he probably deserved it. Then Russell choked out a laugh. “The right person. Sure.”

“I mean…” Since he hadn’t been served a knuckle sandwich, Skip struck a pose, hip cocked, hands in the air like they were on a partner’s shoulders. “I can do the cha-cha.” He swung his hips, fighting a laugh at Russell’s perplexed expression. “Or the swing.” He mimed a four-step pattern, then swung his hips again for good measure. Russell appeared transfixed by the motion.

A shout of laughter distracted them. A group of people spilled out the nightclub’s door, a woman’s voice rising over the hubbub. “Where are we going again?”

Russell shifted in their direction, hands on his hips. “Annette?” he said softly.

“Wait. I want to go back in and hear the band.” To Skip’s ear, the woman wasn’t laughing nearly as hard as the bunch of guys she was with.

“Come on, sugar. It’s just out here,” one of the men said. Skip didn’t like the way he laughed.

“No.”

This time there was no mistaking the distress in her voice. Russell took off running, with Skip right behind. He detoured to the door of the club, where he ran into Ryker and Susie. They were laughing, his arm around her shoulder.

“Come on, you guys,” Skip said. “It sounds like your friend Annette’s in some trouble.”

By the time they got to the other end of the parking lot, Russell was chest to chest with a drunken college boy, the kind with pale skin, a buzz cut, and a mean attitude. Skip looked around for anything he could use as a weapon if it came to a fight. There were two other fellows backing the one in front of Russell, and Annette huddled against a car, tears streaking her cheeks.

“So you’re going to take on all three of us? All by your lonesome?” The boy stuck his finger in Russell’s chest. Russell grabbed his wrist and leaned into him. The college boy was taller, but Russell was broader and bulkier.

“If I have to.”

Under different circumstances, the rock-solid certainty in Russell’s tone would have given Skip a hard-on. Saving that thought for later, he grabbed a thick branch lying between the cars.

“One against three.” Another of the college boys snickered.

Skip stepped forward, holding the branch loosely. “Looks like three against three to me.” Ryker followed his lead.

One of the arrogant fools came right up to Ryker. “Two and a half against three, I’d say.”

With a click, Ryker opened a switchblade. “Funny how this extends my reach.”

Swinging the branch, Skip took a step forward. The college boys all shifted back, even the one facing off with Russell. Skip might be slender and a little light in his boots, but anyone who grew up in Pioneer Square knew how to fight. He and Ryker moved into position on either side of Russell, and the college boys backed off.

“We were just playing anyway.” One of them laughed like it was all a joke.

“Didn’t sound like that to me,” Russell said. “I think you should apologize to my cousin.”

“Your cousin’s a slut.”

Skip wasn’t sure which one said it, but before anyone could respond, Russell took three big steps forward and put his fist into the middle guy’s belly. The boy dropped to his knees, and Russell stood over him. “Anyone else?”

The other two beat feet, which didn’t surprise Skip. These candy-ass college boys were all show and no go. Susie ran up to Annette, with Russell right behind her. “I’m going to get the car,” Skip said to Ryker. “We gotta cut out.”

To Kiss a Lord — an excerpt

To Kiss A Lord SMALL

Amazon

Clarissa Townsend has given up on anyone ever wanting to marry her. It isn’t that she’s ugly, because she’s been told by many that she’s quite beautiful. It’s her blasted limp. A carriage accident when she was fifteen resulted in ugly scarring on her leg, and left her with a horrible limp that keeps her from dancing, and sometimes walking.

Lord Robert Cresthaven came to America in search of a bride, and the moment he sets eyes on Clarissa, he knows he’s found her. With her raven locks and pale complexion, she’s the most beautiful creature he’s ever seen. Her limp doesn’t detract from her beauty in his eyes and he’s determined to have her, at any cost.

A scandal. An unwanted marriage of convenience. And a damsel in need of rescue.

When Lord Cresthaven is caught kissing Clarissa at a ball, it’s all anyone can talk about. But things don’t go according to his plan. He had every intention of marrying her, until her parents locked her away and promised her to another. What’s a lord to do when the only woman he’s ever wanted to marry is kept out of his reach? Anything necessary.

EXCERPT

Clarissa backed into the corner, her leg throbbing in agony, the limb barely holding her weight. She’d seen that look in men’s eyes before, just never directed her way. Lust. Want. Need. Desire. They pulsed in the handsome lord’s eyes. Why he was paying her any attention she didn’t understand. He was part of a large group of visiting lords from England, none of them set to inherit, but they’d been on everyone’s invitation list it seemed.  This wasn’t the first time she’d seen Lord Cresthaven, but she was fairly certain it was the first time he’d noticed her.

“Please, my lord. I don’t want any trouble.” Her voice trembled and she wasn’t certain if it was from the fear of being caught alone with him in the library, or the warmth spreading through her at his nearness. She’d been around attractive men before, but none had ever affected her this way.

“Who said anything about trouble? I merely wish to get to know you better, Miss Townsend.”

She swallowed hard, knowing exactly how he wanted to get to know her. It wouldn’t be the first time a man had propositioned her, saying they would be doing her a favor, since it was clearly obvious no one would want a lame wife. They seemed to think she would be good enough to dally with, but not marry. It hurt, their rejection, and embarrassed her that the men in her world thought so little of her.

At the age of twenty-three, her parents were becoming discouraged. There had been a talk just the other morning, at breakfast, about finding her a shopkeeper for a husband. It was a perfectly respectable position, even if it would put him beneath her socially. Not that she cared one bit. As long as the man was kind to her, could she really argue the matter? Of course, it wouldn’t hurt if he was to be handsome as well as kind.

Not that Clarissa had ever seen anyone as handsome as Lord Cresthaven, an earl’s fifth son, if she’d heard correctly. With his blond hair and blue eyes, he was a stark contrast to her black locks and gray eyes. When her friend, Vanessa, had seen the direction of Clarissa’s gaze earlier, she’d tittered and claimed that Clarissa and Lord Cresthaven would make a striking pair. Not that Clarissa held out any hope that he thought of her as anything other than something to play with. There was heat in his gaze, but if he were marriage minded, surely he wouldn’t dishonor her by undressing her with his eyes the way he currently was.

“My mother is probably looking for me,” she stammered. “We’ll be missed.”

“What’s the worst that could happen should we get caught?”

“I’d be ruined,” she said softly. “Please, my lord. Don’t do this.”

It seemed to give him pause for a moment, but just for a moment. He prowled closer, his legs brushing the hem of her dress. He was close enough now that she could smell him, whatever divine scent he’d splashed on and the scent of cigars. Clarissa’s heart hammered against her ribs and she clenched her hands at her sides to keep from reaching for him. She’d never before wanted to feel a man’s arms around her, not like she did right that moment.

He didn’t disappoint her. Cresthaven drew nearer, bracing one hand on the wall beside her head and placing his other at her waist. He leaned closer still, his breath fanning her lips. Clarissa felt her breath catch in her throat as she wondered whether or not he would kiss her.

“Miss Townsend, do you know why I followed you in here?” he asked, his voice a deep purr.

“N-No, my lord.”

“Because I can’t remember the last time I saw such a tempting morsel. I’ve watched you. If you can’t dance, why do you attend the balls? It must be miserable to sit on the sidelines and watch everyone else.”

“My mother makes me,” she said in a near whisper, embarrassment burning through her at her inability to dance like the other women.

“You’re older than the other debutantes. How many seasons have you been out?”

She felt her cheeks flush. “We don’t exactly have a season like they do in London, my lord, but to answer your question, too many. This is to be my last ball.”

His eyebrows arched. “Last ball? As in ever?”

“Possibly. My family name is a good one in the community. Someone will wish to marry me for that alone.”

“You mean to marry beneath you then?”

She looked away, her gaze dropping to the carpet. Why didn’t the insufferable man just leave? Did he have to break open all her wounds and make her bleed? It was embarrassing enough knowing that no one wanted you, but to have it pointed out by a man who was damn near perfect? It was intolerable. Clarissa tried to wriggle away from him, but his hand tightened on her waist.

“I’m not done with you yet, pet.”

Her gaze lifted to his, but she couldn’t decipher the emotions in his eyes. He was a master at disguising his thoughts.

“Please, let me go, my lord.”

“Robert.”

Her lips parted. “What?”

“My name. It’s Robert. As opposed to you ‘my lording’ me to death.”

Clarissa felt the fire build in her cheeks again. “That’s too familiar, my lord. We don’t know one another well enough to use our Christian names. We’ve never been formally introduced at all.”

“Maybe not,” he muttered, “but it didn’t stop me from asking about you. Will you really deny me the only thing I’ve asked of you? What possible harm will befall you if you call me Robert when we’re alone?”

“I suppose it would be all right.”

His lips tipped up on one corner. “Good. Now to the other matter.”

“Other matter?” Her brow furrowed.

“The matter of the kiss I’ve been dying to bestow upon your rather distracting lips since the first moment I saw you.”

“My lord. Robert.”

“I like my name falling from your lips,” he said as his nose brushed hers.

“You’re going to ruin me. Just let me go.”

“I can’t.”

“Can’t? Or won’t?”

He pressed his cheek to hers, his breath teasing her ear. “Maybe a little of both. I’ve wanted you for weeks now, and now that I have you in my arms, I find that I cannot release you.”

“You’re toying with me. We both know what you want from me, and it isn’t marriage.”

“And what do I want from you?” He pulled back to look into her eyes once more. “What do you know of my desires and wants? The need that burns inside of me every time you’re near?”

“Y-you want t-to b-bed me,” she stuttered.

The look in his eyes warmed and a smile stretched across his handsome face. “Oh, I definitely want that, my delectable Clarissa, but I want so much more than a simple tumble.”

The Murphys

I’m working on a western historical mini-series with Paige Warren called The Murphys. The first book, Ellie’s Cowboy, is scheduled for an August release. There will be a total of four books in the series, set in the 1880’s in Texas. This is something a little different for me and I’m excited to try something new.

Here’s a little about Ellie’s cowboy….

It’s the 1880′s in Texas and Ellie has run away from her family and an unwanted marriage. Nearly blind, she knows that she’s no bargain. But if she can find work and make a way for herself in the wild lands of Texas, then maybe she’ll be all right. What she didn’t count on was Tucker Murphy. Ellie always knew she had a lot of love to give. She just never thought she’d find her very own cowboy.

Tuck is the local Sheriff in Blue Springs, and also her hero. After rescuing her from an attack her first day in town, he takes her to his home to care for her. Ellie is unlike any woman he’s ever met before, and Tuck finds himself drawn to her. When he hears of her troubles, he thinks he just may have a solution that will suit the both of them.

While circumstances may bring them together, only love will make it last.
