Through the Woods
D. M. Million, R. M. Carpus
(A Short Story Anthology, Vol. 2)
Publication date: September 9th 2025
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Horror, Paranormal

Welcome to Thorn Valley, where the dead make the rules and the living follow them.

Everyone knows what goes on at the Thorn Valley Cemetery. The locals never stray from the three sacred rules.

Don’t speak when you enter through the gate.

Never visit at night.

Never visit alone.

Seems simple enough, but in this town, nothing is simple, and no place is safe. Don’t let the white picket fences and cozy shops on Main Street fool you. Here, the dead don’t sleep, and they’re always in charge.

Escape to the small, eerie town of Thorn Valley in this fresh collection of spine-tingling tales from the much anticipated next installment of THROUGH THE WOODS.

SNEAK PEEK:

Then I see where I’m standing, at the edge of an ivy-covered gate, black iron, sharp-toothed rods I recognize well, even in the damp, cold night. The entrance to the Thorn Valley Cemetery. My freezing fingers lace tighter around Eva’s, and I look down at my bare, mud-caked feet. I’m in my blue satin nightgown, half-sheathed by my lace ivory bathrobe. Gasping, I cover myself and whirl around in the damp cold, searching the night for signs of life
or reason.

“Why am I here? What are we doing here?”

Eva releases my hand but keeps her eyes locked on mine as if I might disappear. She shakes as she tugs the quilt from her shoulders to wrap me in its warmth. “You had another spell,” she says, still trembling as she guides me away from the gate. “You were trying to climb up and over. Your sister called me and said you were gone, that your bedroom window was open, the curtains pulled wide. She woke up to make tea because she couldn’t sleep and had a feeling

she should check on you.”

“Another dream.”

“Yes.”

“They’re getting worse.”

“I know.”

“I was . . . on the coast.” Dizzy and dazed, I pause for a beat to get my bearings. Eva stalls too, waiting patiently for me to find my balance. “The sea was coming for me, it wanted to drown me. I was running, then climbing . . . trying to climb toward the sky.” I can feel Eva’s horror, her pupils like frozen, black saucers stunned as they study my face.

“There was so much sun, so much blue, an unwavering stillness on land. But the sea . . . it roared, it wouldn’t stop reaching for me. I felt an earthquake, an imminent tsunami in the distance, even in the stillness. I couldn’t let it have me, I just couldn’t—” Eva takes hold of my shoulders, carefully turning me toward her. I know in that moment my eyes are tinged with a ripple of madness, and that she sees it, too. “This is going to stop.”

-“Night Fever,” Thorn Valley – R. M. Carpus

Author Bio:

DM Million: I grew up in southern New Jersey, reading fantasy and paranormal books. I love anything that whisks me away to another world, and I wanted to create my own worlds for readers like myself to enjoy. I believe reading is not only an escape from our real-world problems, but a way to expand our minds, keep us sharp, and bring us joy. What I love about books is that we can use our imaginations to “see” what the author sees. When we watch TV or a movie, we can turn off our creativity and mindlessly view what the creators intended for us. But reading requires the engaging of our creative minds. I hope that you will enjoy my stories as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

R. M. Carpus is the author of THE CITY WIFE and co-founder of Wraith House. Born in Philly and raised in sunny Southwest Florida, her nomadic spirit has carried her all over the U.S. She now resides in the moody Pacific Northwest, where she dwells with ghosts of the bygone grunge era, always on the lookout for Eddie Vedder, killer whales, and inspiration for the next book. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s engrossed in ’90s music and reruns, catching a film at SIFF, or hiding away in the San Juan Islands or the Olympic Peninsula. She loves animals, the ocean, and spooky season.

What is something unique/quirky about you? I perform with a group called Seadog Slam, in which myself and the other members dress in pirate garb and recite our original pirate and adventure poetry at various events. Tell something about yourself, and how you became an author. I started writing stories and poetry when I was around 13 years old. I’ve always had a vivid imagination, and entertained myself most of the time, either reading, writing, or spending time in nature, hiking, bicycling, or in boats on lakes. I started thinking about trying to publish some of my work during my early 20s, but nothing came of it at the time. It wasn’t until my late 30s that I got more serious about wanting to be a published author. I attended some writing workshops to try to hone my skills and see if my writing might have a chance of being publishable. My goal was to have a short story published before I turned 40. In the Fall of 2010, when I had just turned 39, I happened to start corresponding with author and editor Janet Morris online, through commenting on her posts regarding her latest novel The Sacred Band, which she had written with her husband Chris Morris. I had been a big fan of her Sacred Band of Stepsons characters from the Thieves’ World shared world anthology series and the spin-off novels about them that Janet wrote. When she found out I was a writer of many years, though unpublished, she told me that she and Chris were going to bring back the Heroes in Hell shared universe series, with the first book being an anthology of short stories by several authors, and they were looking for more writers to submit stories, and asked if I would write and submit a story for consideration in the first book titled Lawyers in Hell. She accepted my story, my first-ever to be published, when the book was released in the Summer of 2011, just about 3 months before my 40th birthday. Who is your hero, and why? My Dad, Larry Atchley Sr. is my hero. He has always been there for me when I needed him most, and he has always been a wonderful, loving father. He has done a lot to help various members of our extended family as well. What inspired you to write Unholiest Grail?  When I found out that there was going to be a Pirates in Hell volume, I knew I had to write a story for it. As I mentioned before, I am in a pirate performance group, so Pirates and their history and stories are something I have always been interested in. I knew right away that I would choose Henry Morgan for my main pirate character, and my story would deal with his legendary appetite for alcohol. In Hell, the damned cannot get drunk, and it would really chafe Morgan not to be able to get inebriated, so I came up with the idea of a magical chalice that would allow the damned to get drunk. Morgan would want to find it before anyone else. I also felt that having had my own share of trouble with alcohol on and off throughout my life that I could lend some personal perspective to the story and that might serve as a cathartic exercise. Tell us why your story is a must read.  Well it has action, adventure, pirates, vikings, the founder of the Church of Satan, and a surprise twist ending. If that’s not enough to make it extremely interesting, then I don’t know what is. What is your advice to new authors? Keep writing and improving your craft. Read a lot, and in a wide range of subjects, but get to know the genre or subject you want to write for especially well. It’s never too late and you’re never too old to become published. Don’t listen to your inner demon critics, and don’t let anyone cause you to feel like you aren’t good enough to write and be published.

Excerpt

The Drain

Professor Vladimir Reed-Field wished he had never taken the job at
Miskatonic University. He’d never had problems like this when he was
teaching at the University of Hawaii. A volcanic eruption would be  a
welcome change over the sound coming from that damn kitchen sink.

The plumber from Blizzard Pipeworks could find nothing wrong with the
drain. She’d scoped it, snaked it, and performed a full flush. She
said that sometimes the plumbing in Arkham’s old houses just made odd
noises.

The problem wasn’t the pipes themselves. It was the thing inside the
pipes that kept whispering the professor’s name.

About the Author

C. L. Hart, the owner and sole employee of Naughty Netherworld Press, is
spoken of in hushed tones. She is described as The Mad Scribe of the
Northeastern Colorado Plains, The Terrible Old Woman, and The Author That
Should Not Be.

When not penning sanity-destroying works of dystopian fiction, Lovecraftian
fantasy, or old-school horror with the occasional sweet romance thrown in to
upset the cosmic apple cart, Ms. Hart enjoys creating baked goods she hopes
will be considered palatable.

Ms. Hart shares a home in a remote rural town of 134 souls with her adult
son and three cats. Her sense of fashion is best described as Early
Twenty-First Century Unmade Bed. This disabled former nurse can usually be
found arguing with herself about subplots or rehabilitating eldritch
horrors.

Alternate Endings

A Short Story Anthology of Historical What Ifs

by Salina B Baker, Stephanie Churchill (Foreword), Sharon Bennett Connolly, Elizabeth Corbett, Virginia Crow, Cathie Dunn, Karen Heenan, Michael Ross, and Samantha Wilcoxson

We all know the past is the past, but what if you could change history?

We asked eight historical authors to set aside the facts and rewrite the history they love. The results couldn’t be more tantalizing.

What if Julius Caesar never conquered Gaul?

What if Arthur Tudor lived and his little brother never became King Henry VIII?

What if Abigail Adams persuaded the Continental Congress in 1776 to give women the right to vote and to own property?

Dive in to our collection of eight short stories as we explore the alternate endings of events set in ancient Rome, Britain, the United States, and France.

An anthology of the Historical Writers Forum.

From werewolves, vampires, and even Bigfoot, these beasts manage to find

is another story. When it comes down to it, don’t judge a book by its
cover. This anthology brings a mixture of what ifs and happily ever
afters.

Nieuwstraten III, Ashley L. Hunt, Charles Kyffhausen, Lil Deville, Kelly

The Beasts of Hank’s Wood by Lil DeVille

Joe Schola III is the eighteen-year-old son of Joseph Schola Junior, a
fire-and-brimstone preaching Fundamentalist televangelist. While young Joe
is far less homophobic than his father, he is struggling to come to terms
with his own sexual orientation. Will Joe dare accept the invitation to
become part of a clan of shapeshifters, and will he accept the love being
offered to him by the handsome fox shifter Lovell Azarola?

Excerpt from The Beasts of Hank’s Wood

Reverend Jed didn’t miss what was happening between me and her gorgeous friend. Taking my hands in hers, she smiled.

“There’s nothing wrong with letting nature take its course,” she advised. “Then again, you don’t want to dive into deep waters too soon. I’ve known Lovell all his life. He’s not the casual and fleeting kind.”

“I’m not either,” I reassured her. “The truth is, I’ve never been in a relationship. Because I don’t know a thing about letting someone know I’m interested in them or establishing if they’re interested in me, I don’t want to make a mistake. Straight people have it hard too, but I think it’s even harder when you’re not straight. If a
straight guy hits on a girl who’s not interested, he probably won’t get his backside handed to him, unless she has a jealous boyfriend he doesn’t know about.”

“The thing is, I wouldn’t have said anything if I hadn’t seen what was happening between you and Lovell. He definitely noticed you.”

“Um…Forest didn’t, you know, notice Vic, did he? ‘Cause Vic’s straight. Vic won’t kick his butt, but I wouldn’t want Forest to waste his time on a straight guy.”

Reverend Jed burst out laughing.

“Forest is straight too. He simply sensed a kindred spirit in Vic.”

“I guess my gay-dar is broken,” I said. “’Cause he looked me up and down and I kind of thought he might be checking me out.”

“He was checking to see if you were safe for his brother. The boys are very protective of each other.”

“Well, I’m safe,” I reassured Reverend Jed. “But maybe a fine guy like Lovell isn’t going to be too keen on an inexperienced dude like me.”

“He’s keen,” Reverend Jed said. “It’s up to you if you want to encourage his interest.”

If You Can’t Stand the Heat by Camille Anthony

He stood in the doorway of the Bakery’s kitchen, belt dangling from his hand, watching his mate of forty years bustle about preparing refreshments for the library shindig about later that evening. As always, the sight of her had his heart doing that funny leap in his chest, his cock echoing the movement behind the zipper of his jeans. After all this time, it still only took a look, a whiff of his female’s scent to have him hard as a cactus spike.

Along with his surging lust came a powerful burst of love and he knew if prairie dogs didn’t mate for life, he’d still never let this woman go. He’d die without her. However, that didn’t mean he was blind to her faults.

His Reba was an incorrigible busybody, continually putting her finger in other folk’s pies. He understood her interfering tendencies were part of her caring nature and that would have been fine as long as she contained her meddling within the family.

She didn’t.

He wasn’t mad at her. Edison’s smile was full of masculine anticipation. The punishment of her infraction was going to be intensely pleasurable for both of them.
