Excerpt I couldn’t believe my luck. The most gorgeous man I’d ever seen had just walked into Sam’s Place, a bar not exactly known as a hangout for gay couples. So why was tall, dark, and yummy smiling and heading my way? I was glad I’d worn my blue buttondown shirt with my jeans, knowing the color matched my eyes. As the man approached, I looked him over from head to toe, lingering on his broad, sculpted chest and flat stomach. I wasn’t exactly short at 5’10”, but this man topped me by several inches. Just thinking of having that large, hard body pressed against mine as he fucked me was enough to make me hard. I shifted on the barstool, my cock now pressing against the front of my pants. I was uncomfortable, but in a good way. The man’s smile widened as he stopped in front of me, obviously having noticed my frank appraisal. “Like what you see?” he asked in a deep, rumbling voice. “Oh yeah.” I immediately flushed, not believing I’d just said that aloud. Clearing my throat, I nodded toward the bartender. “Can I buy you a beer?” “Sounds good. I’ll have whatever you’re having.” “Hey, Scott, bring another Corona with a slice of lime,” I shouted to my friend. Scott smiled and nodded. Noticing the man standing in front of me, he winked. “I’m Brian,” the man said, holding out his hand. I shook it and smiled. “Sean.” He slid onto the barstool next to mine. “Nice to meet you.” “Likewise.” I took a sip of my beer. “I don’t think I’ve seen you around before. Are you just visiting?” “Actually, I just moved here. I accepted a position at Hankins & Wilson.” My eyes widened. “You’re a lawyer?” He laughed. “Yeah, why? You have a thing against lawyers?” “No, it’s just… you seem a little young to be a lawyer. So what do you think of Willow Grove so far?” “Quaint. It’s part of what drew me here. I miss small town charm.” “You’re from a small town?” Scott brought Brian’s beer, opened it and sat it down in front of him. As he took a swallow, I watched his throat muscles work and felt my cock throb. “I grew up in a small town outside of Dallas. No place I’m sure you’ve heard of. Population three hundred.” “Wow, and I thought Willow Grove was bad with five hundred.” He smiled. “It just gets better and better, that’s for sure.” I returned his smile and wondered if he was after something long term or just a one night stand. I wasn’t really a one-night stand type of guy, but I might be willing to make an exception for him. All I knew was that I wanted him. I’d never been so fiercely attracted to a man before in my life. “I’d have to agree.” Brian tipped his head toward the door. “Want to get out of here?” I hopped off the barstool. “Love to.” He stood and reached for my hand, tugging me toward the door. Disgusted looks followed us, except for Scott who was smiling. Brian paid for the beer and I fought the urge to stick out my tongue at the bar patrons. It was time for Willow Grove to be more open-minded. When we got outside, he led me to a silver Audi parked at the curb. It just showed how different we really were. My older Honda was trusty but nothing to brag about, not compared to the sleek machine in front of me. As I slid into the butter soft interior, I inhaled the new car smell. Brian got in on the driver’s side and started the car. “So… I feel like I should tell you that I don’t believe in one-night stands.” He stared into my eyes. “But I do believe in love at first sight.” I gulped. “Me too. To both.” He gave me a slow, sexy grin. “Your place or mine?” “Yours. Mine tends to be noisy.” He nodded and pulled away from the curb. In less than five minutes, we were in front of a small house on a quiet street. We got out and I followed him up to the house. When we approached the door, the porch light popped on, illuminating us in soft yellow light. “I should warn you, I didn’t clean up today,” he said as he pushed the door open. “I don’t care.” And I really didn’t. When we stepped inside, I was surprised at the décor. I had expected cool, contemporary pieces, not the lush oversized brown leather sofa and chair. A rustic wooden coffee table dominated the middle of the room, giving the place a western feel. Black and white photos from what I assumed to be Texas hung on the walls, along with a few photos of him with an older woman and man whom I assumed were his parents. He kicked the door shut and stepped close to me, gently grabbing my nape. Pulling me close, he kissed me softly, his lips moving over mine in a sensual dance. When I parted my lips, his tongue slipped inside and I nearly came in my pants. I’d never wanted a man like I wanted Brian.

The Murphys
I’m working on a western historical mini-series with Paige Warren called The Murphys. The first book, Ellie’s Cowboy, is scheduled for an August release. There will be a total of four books in the series, set in the 1880’s in Texas. This is something a little different for me and I’m excited to try something new.
Here’s a little about Ellie’s cowboy….
It’s the 1880′s in Texas and Ellie has run away from her family and an unwanted marriage. Nearly blind, she knows that she’s no bargain. But if she can find work and make a way for herself in the wild lands of Texas, then maybe she’ll be all right. What she didn’t count on was Tucker Murphy. Ellie always knew she had a lot of love to give. She just never thought she’d find her very own cowboy.
Tuck is the local Sheriff in Blue Springs, and also her hero. After rescuing her from an attack her first day in town, he takes her to his home to care for her. Ellie is unlike any woman he’s ever met before, and Tuck finds himself drawn to her. When he hears of her troubles, he thinks he just may have a solution that will suit the both of them.
While circumstances may bring them together, only love will make it last.
Rescuing Zoey
Zoey has had erotic dreams about her boss, Sebastian Montcrief, for the longest time, but doubts he would ever look at her as more than an employee. When his cousin Andrew Montcrief joins Bellmont Enterprises, Zoey and Andrew team up to win her the attention of the elusive Sebastian.’
EXCERPT
At the office, I did my work as usual, trying to keep a low profile. I smiled when people walked by, but tried to mind my business otherwise. The women didn’t seem to like me, not since my very first day. I kept to myself. Well, mostly.
Landon Wells was a close friend and colleague, and the only person I really talked to in the office. As a gay man, he had it rough. The other guys in the office either avoided him or made snide remarks about the fact he preferred men. There were definitely grounds for him to file harassment charges against them, but he just let it slide. He always said that there were small minds everywhere, and it was easier to ignore them than to try fighting the whole world. Still, I would have slapped them with a lawsuit. But that’s just me.
My email dinged and I opened a message from Nancy, Sebastian’s secretary. Groaning, I dropped my head in my hands. Great, another meeting. I was still completely embarrassed over the last one. Sebastian had asked me a question repeatedly, but I’d been too busy fantasizing about having sex with him to hear anything he’d said. I’d been mortified when Landon nudged me with a snicker and nodded toward the boss, knowing exactly where my mind had been — in the gutter.
I grabbed my pen and notepad, and headed for the conference room, wishing there was a way I could sit with my back to my boss. It was the only way I wouldn’t fantasize about him; at least I thought I wouldn’t. Then again, Sebastian was yummy enough that I’d probably daydream about him regardless.
When I entered the room, only a few people had made it. Hurrying over to Landon, I claimed the chair next to his. Brett Sawyer sat on my left and leered at me. I rolled my eyes and turned to Landon, planning to ignore the annoying Brett.
“What do you think the meeting’s about?” I asked softly.
Landon shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine.”
I chewed on my lower lip, a little worried. Our stocks had dipped a bit in the last few weeks, and I’d heard rumors of budget cuts. Usually that translated into lay-offs. Not only did I not want to be parted from my delicious boss’s company, but I couldn’t afford to lose my job. My apartment might not be much, but it was mine. No, it wasn’t my living expenses that I couldn’t afford, it was my shopping bills. I had maxed out all of my credit cards, much to my horror. But I was addicted to clothes and shoes. My overstuffed closet bore witness to this fact.
When Sebastian walked in the door, I felt my heart flutter in my chest. No matter how many times I saw him, my body reacted to him on sight, wanting him with an intensity that bordered on being embarrassing. Good thing men weren’t entirely like dogs, otherwise they would have smelled my arousal every time the man came near me.
He smiled broadly at all of us, everyone now gathered around the large table waiting on whatever news he had to impart.
“Good morning. I know you’re probably wondering why I called this meeting and I promise to keep it brief.” He met our eyes, his gaze resting on each of us in turn. Did he linger a little on me, or was that just wishful thinking? “I’ve decided to bring in some fresh blood to help with marketing so my cousin, Andrew Montcrief, will be joining us starting Monday. He’s a likeable guy so I’m sure everyone will get along well with him.”
Brett’s hand slid up the slit of my skirt, and I turned and glared at him. When he just grinned unrepentantly, I smacked him in the arm — hard. It wasn’t the first time he’d tried something like that and I doubted it would be the last. The man couldn’t seem to keep his hands to himself and didn’t understand the word “no” in any language. I’d complained to H.R. a few times, but they hadn’t done anything. So I’d decided to ignore him as much as possible.
“Zoey, is there a problem?” Sebastian asked, one eyebrow arched.
“Um, uh… No.”
“So you were swatting a fly on Mr. Sawyer’s arm?”
“Uh, no… that is, um…”
“I’ll see you in my office after the meeting, Zoey.”
Amidst the snickers at the table, he turned away from me and immediately began speaking again. My face flamed in embarrassment, and I looked beseechingly at Landon. The louse only shrugged and grinned, knowing full well why I’d smacked Brett.
I couldn’t focus for the rest of the meeting and was somewhat surprised when everyone stood to leave. It had ended without me hearing a single thing — not good. Thankfully, it looked like Landon had taken excellent notes so I could just get everything from him later, even if it meant enduring a bit of teasing about my infatuation with the boss.
As I stood, Sebastian motioned for me to follow him to his office. His assistant glared at me as I walked past her desk and into Sebastian’s office. When I heard the door click shut behind me, my shoulders stiffened. While being alone with him might have been my ongoing fantasy, I wasn’t sure I trusted myself. With my luck, I’d assault the man and practically beg him to have sex with me on his desk, the floor, or anywhere else he wanted.
“Zoey, care to explain to me what happened today?”
I swallowed. No, not really. “Well…um…”
“Sometime today, Zoey.”
“Brett tried to stick his hand up my skirt,” I blurted out, inwardly wincing. Subtlety was not my strong suit to be sure.
“I see.” He pursed his lips. His beautiful, full, kissable lips.
I jerked my attention away from his delightful mouth and focused on his eyes. Not much better really, but I had to look somewhere. My gaze started to drop and I forced it to stay on his face. I would not look at his crotch in hopes of seeing how big his cock was, I absolutely… okay, so I peeked.
“Do you want to file a complaint against him?” he asked, and my eyes jerked back up to his face.
“No, that’s not necessary.” I wasn’t about to tell the man I’d already filed several complaints. I somehow doubted he wanted to hear that his H.R. department wasn’t doing an adequate job.
Both eyebrows lifted. “He’s done this sort of thing before?”
I nearly snorted. “Uh, yeah. A few times.” More like a few hundred.
“I’m sorry you’ve been having problems with him. The good news is that he’ll be reporting to Andrew starting Monday, and my cousin won’t tolerate any foolishness. If Brett touches you again, just tell Andrew and he’ll take care of it.”
I nodded.
He gave me a small smile and I thought my legs would buckle. “You can go back to your desk now.”
I nodded again and slowly walked out of the office, thankful my legs would still hold me up. I left the door ajar on my way out.
Sour Grapes, a.k.a. Nancy, glared at me once more. I felt like sticking my tongue out at her, but refrained — barely.

Werewolves, Faeries and Angels… oh my!
I’m working on an interesting mini-series called Bewere of Faeries. At first, I thought it was going to be a werewolf piece, but as I started writing it began evolving into something else entirely. Are there werewolves? Of course! And they play a large part, but they aren’t the only supernatural characters in the stories. Love faeries? They’re in there too! Have a thing for angels? I even threw in an angel. How does all of that fit together you might wonder? Well, you’ll have to read the series to figure it all out. At the moment, I’m wrapping up the final story in the series and then I’ll work on finding a publisher. I have one in mind and I hope they accept it, but we’ll see. Hopefully Bewere of Faeries will be released late this year or early next year. Stay tuned for more information!
To Tame a Werewolf
The 2nd book in the Otherworldly series, To Tame a Werewolf, comes out Spring 2011. The first, The Demon’s Princess, released fall 2010 with Wild Horse Press. In this follow-up novel, Dominic Richards, the Earl of Leamont, is visiting America in order to find a bride. At the young age of twenty, he feels it’s too soon to be trapped into a loveless marriage, but he will do what he must to protect his title. But then he meets Lila, a vivacious seventeen year old on the run. Her age poses a problem, until her eighteenth birthday, but regardless, Dominic finds himself smitten. Too bad Lila is set against being his wife-to-be. When she escapes and does everything in her power to stay away from him, he still tracks her relentlessly. There are perks to being a werewolf, after all. However, the last place he expects to find her is at the demon’s house. In the end, will Lila choose to be with him, or will she keep pushing him away? And will Dominic take no for an answer, or will his wolfy side win out, demanding that he claim her for his own?

Affirmations… by guest author Linda Palmer
Time and again, I’ve noticed that when I begin a new book, I start receiving what I call “affirmations” that I’m doing the right thing. I actually have a list of affirmations I received while writing Storm Swept, my December ’09 release from Wild Horse Press. In that book, a character that is in the military is called up to help repair damage from a hurricane that I named Farrah. My affirmation? Right after I named my hurricane, I met a woman named Farrah at work. Coincidence? Maybe, but also an affirmation because I picked the name at random, and she was actually looking for another office. Another example is my decision to have my heroine enrolled in classes at a culinary institute. I immediately received two affirmations for that decision: I started seeing ads for a culinary institute while watching Ghost Hunter on the SyFy channel, and I heard one of my coworkers on the phone talking about her daughter actually enrolling in one. If I hadn’t already made that choice for my character, I’d think that hearing about the institute subconsciously made me choose it. But it just didn’t happen that way.

Yet another example is my choice of “mermaid” as a nickname the hero gives the heroine. After I wrote that, I immediately received three affirmations. First, the movie Mermaids starring Cher came on television. Second, there was a story on the news about a prosthetic mermaid tail created for a woman who didn’t have legs so she could swim. Third, a coworker randomly mentioned that her husband called her that.
In this same vein, right after I wrote a scene where a character is attacked by an evil spirit, but is rescued in the nick of time, I heard this lyric in a rock song “if not for me then you’d be dead.” Okay…I admit that’s a stretch, but it worked for me! And right after I decided that my heroine would be cooking breakfasts at her sister’s B&B, I got an e-mail from Kraft foods full of breakfast recipes and heard one of the characters on Big Bang Theory mention a B&B.

Receiving affirmations is not new to me. I remember my Silhouette Romance days and two particularly unusual incidences. While plotting a book about a hero whose job is to stop illegal immigration from Mexico into Texas, I realized I didn’t know what branch of the government controlled that. At the time, the internet wasn’t as huge, so the world wasn’t at my fingertips as it is now. Before I had a chance to research my question, I ran into a man who had the words Border Patrol on his cap. We were both giving blood at the time, which meant neither of us could go anywhere, so I was able to ask him a lot of questions. Another affirmation from that same book was my need for a stretch of lonely highway. I wanted my heroine to stop and change a flat tire for the hero, whose entire arm was in a cast. If there was a lot of traffic on the road, a man would already have done the job. I needed for my heroine to know that no one else would be able to help him. I found the answer to my question when the woman who sells me make-up stopped by my house and began talking about her recent vacation. Out of the blue, she said that she’d driven down a road for over an hour without seeing another car. I got out an atlas. She pointed out the road, which was, believe it or not, in Texas!

I have many more examples; they’re all lots of fun. And amazingly enough, my daughter, who recently began writing romance, has started getting them, too. She phones and e-mails me often, telling me her most recent. Jessica Coulter Smith recently told me that she dreamed about the last book in her series and woke up knowing how to write it. Well, no dreams for me so far, but I do get affirmations straight from my personal muse. And they never fail to encourage and inspire me.
