BOOK REVIEW: Elfin by Quinn Loftis #YAfantasy #bookreview

Before tonight Cassie Tate’s biggest concerns were whether she could pass Algebra and how she was going to keep Elora, her best friend, from dressing her in a skimpy fairy costume for Halloween. Her feet were firmly planted in suburban reality and she had no reason to believe her life would be anything but that of a typical teenager. That is until tonight, when Cassie saw something that no human was ever supposed to see; in the blink of an eye she was thrown into the world of the Light and Dark Elves.

He comes from a realm where light and dark have fought for millennia. He is of a race known to humans only in myths and legends. The darkness that lives inside him is a part of both who and what he is and it makes him the most gifted spy and assassin in the history of his time. His life is not his own; he lives in the service of the Dark Elf King. He slays who he must, has mercy on no one, is relentless in his hunt, and never tires of seeing his prey fall. He is Triktapic, assassin, spy, most feared of the Dark Elves.

Now, in the midst of his King’s complicated plans to expand the Dark Elves’ holdings into the mortal realm, for the first time, Trik finds his loyalties divided. For no Elf, Dark or Light, can turn away from their Chosen.

Unbeknownst to the mortal realm, the battle between Light and Dark is being brought to their doorstep. The only one who can keep it at bay holds darkness in his heart like a lover, and the one who can sway that heart must decide if she can look beyond his black past, beyond his evil nature and see the man he is destined to be.

The question must be asked, does love really cover a multitude of sins? Can true love actually conquer all or will his darkness consume those around him until all that stands is an assassin with the blood of the mortal realm on his hands?

MY REVIEW – 2 stars

In a YA Fantasy involving elves, I have certain expectations. This one fell a bit short. Honestly, the biggest issue I had were the elves. An elf assassin who’s centuries old is not going to roll his eyes all the time or speak and act like a teenager. If the book had been a paperback, I may have thrown it across the room by the tenth time he acted like an immature brat. The next issue I had was the outdated slang the high school students used. They came across more like a fifty year old attempting to be seventeen. While I understand slang changes all the time, the terms in this book were decades out of date. If those two issues were resolved, the book would be immensely better.

There were other issues, but for the most part, I could have overlooked them. The one that stood out the most were the heroine’s parents who hardly ever appear in the story. I found it a bit odd, and I honestly wasn’t sure why they were even in the book to begin with. It would have been better to make her an orphan. She supposedly loves her parents, and yet, we hardly see them. It was just a little strange to me. Almost like the author forgot about them and just randomly tossed in a mention of them here and there.

Overall, the storyline was good. It intrigued me enough I picked up book two, since it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. As annoying as I found most of the characters, I can’t stand not knowing how the story ends. Hopefully, I’ll have the answers to my questions. If not, I don’t think I can last through a third book of eye-rolling elves.

BOOK REVIEW: Cranky Pants by Kayt Miller #contemporaryromance #bookreview

Maggy Fitzgerald is happy. She works at her best friend’s flower shop with the full knowledge that this is probably as good as its going to get. That is until that same friend talks her into going out to a biker bar so they can “live on the wild side” for a night.

Nate Black is cranky. He has a right to be. At least that’s what he thinks. Spending an evening now and then drinking a beer with the guys EasyRiders, is one of the only things that he enjoys, sort of.

Then, he meets her.
A sexy, curvy woman who makes him smile… and laugh.
A dangerous woman.

Good thing he’s an a**hole because getting rid of her the next morning is easy.
The hard part?
Forgetting her.

MY REVIEW – 3 stars

New to me author. I discovered this book through BookBub and grabbed a copy because it sounded intriguing. However, it came across as a biker romance and that’s not what I got. So if you’re looking for an MC romance, move along. This isn’t it. Seriously, there are two short scenes in a biker bar, but not a single thing that makes this a biker romance. I honestly felt the EasyRiders and biker bar tossed into the book description were highly misleading.

Cranky Pants is a romance about a rich guy who’s lost what’s most important in his life, so naturally when he spends a night with Maggy and realizes he likes her, he acts like an assh*le and pushes her away. Nate ran so hot and cold at times he gave me a headache. While I could understand he was hurting, the fact Maggy kept letting him back in annoyed me. I enjoyed Maggy’s character, for the most part, and by the last third of the book the relationship between the two of them seemed to flow better.

The book wasn’t horrible, but it’s definitely not something I’d re-read. It was okay and a decent diversion from life for a few hours.

BOOK REVIEW: Bad Vampire by Lauren Dawes #fantasy #comedy

A rookie cop. A team of supernatural misfits. Recalcitrant baby vampires on the loose.

My name is Cat McKenzie, and I’ve been a very bad girl…

No, not in the I-need-a-spanking way…pervert.

Nope, my kind of bad got my partner killed on my first day of the job. And now I’m getting punished by being thrown in as human liaison to PIG — the Paranormal Investigative Group.

Seriously, what were my superiors thinking?

I’m not going to lie: I hate all supernatural beings, but especially those cocky ones like my new partner happens to be. Between baby vampires terrorizing school events, my truck getting totalled and demon sex clubs, I wonder who the hell I pissed off in a different life.

But when the vampire threat becomes personal, I’m hell bent on getting to the bottom of it.

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

What do you get when you mix a snarky human with magical objects and supernatural beings? A fast-paced, humorous, page-turning thrill you won’t be able to put down!

Cat Mackenzie is all kinds of awesome from her Jack of filter, to her obsession with unicorns, and let’s not forget the snarky attitude wrapped in a tiny human body. She’s kickass, sarcastic, and an amazing heroine.

While there are sparks between her and her supe partner, Sawyer, it’s a secondary story thread that makes for an awesome read. However, the action-packed mystery behind the baby vampires takes center stage.

If you like urban fantasy with all sorts of things that go bump in the night, Bad Vampire is a must-read! Very much looking forward to book 2!

BOOK REVIEW: Late as a Rabbit by Kendra Moreno #fairytales #horrorromance

Tick.
Jupiter only ever wanted an adventure, but she never should have gone searching for one. It finds her in the form of a white rabbit with silver eyes.
Tock.
When that same white rabbit turns out to be the White Rabbit from the story books, she can’t contain her curiosity. She follows him down the rabbit hole and drops right into Wonderland. But this isn’t the Wonderland she hoped for. The world is filled with danger, horrifying creatures, and a prophecy that speaks of her role.
Tick.
Jupiter never thought her adventure would include blood-thirty Bandersnatch, a Vengeful Red Queen, or a sexy White Rabbit. Nor did she ever think she was an important part of saving such nightmares, but a certain Rabbit drew her into this gruesome world, and she’s determined to stay by his side.
Tock.
Jupiter has to act quickly. The Red Queen is growing more desperate to stop the prophecy from coming true. Jupiter is only the second . . .
. . . and Wonderland is running out of time.
Tick.

***This is a horror romance retelling of Alice in Wonderland. It includes descritions of gore, violence, and a sexy Rabbit. Please be advised, there is a trigger warning for this novel for the above mentioned violence and gore, as well, as brief mentions of sexual assualt.***

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

I would gladly fall down the rabbit hole, especially while chasing a sexy rabbit, and Juniper does exactly that…

The fated mate to the White Rabbit is a geeky scientist who will do whatever it takes to save Wonderland, even if it means losing her own life. Juniper is strong, courageous, and sees the good in people. She compliments the White Rabbit perfectly.

Late as a Rabbit is a fast paced, Insta-love story full of danger, steamy scenes, and more than a little madness. It was an absolute delight!

Description

While Ryker’s body came back from Afghanistan just fine, his mind didn’t, and his thoughts wander back there in painful flashbacks that have present-time consequences. In order to avoid hurting anyone, Ryker secludes himself in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Then Officer Chess Medcull shows up with a case of were-animals being tortured and killed in a way similar to how Ryker almost died in the war. In order to stop the murders, Ryker must face the demons in his head, and maybe, just maybe, allow Chess to help. That is, as long as neither is the next victim.

Prologue

Ryker’s back wasn’t burning any longer, which brought both relief and terror. He healed quickly, even for a werewolf, and the stinging, sharp pain of the blood and bruising of the whip were definitely something he wanted to end as fast as possible. Except, his captors had some sort of sixth sense for when he had healed enough for the pain to fade, and that was when they returned.

He wasn’t healing as quickly now as in those first few days. His body was emaciated from what must have been a month or two of very little food and almost constant abuse. Ryker’s clothing was completely shredded, the desert camo print more rags than anything resembling his Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform. The jacket had been taken on day one by his captors, and his white undershirt hadn’t survived the first whipping. The pants had gotten bloodstained immediately, but the shredding hadn’t started until they decided to find out what happened to his healing ability if they stabbed him a couple of times. Those initial rips had spread until only the barest strips of fabric covered his long legs.

And then there was his right wrist. The inch-thick silver band was tight around his wrist and held in place by a heavy padlock that none of his attempts had broken. Werewolf strength would have broken an ordinary lock, but this massive one combined with the immediate effects of silver poisoning kept him trapped. The skin around Ryker’s wrist had bubbled and blistered underneath the touch of silver. His head ached constantly as the silver slowly poisoned his blood, and every time he bled a little more under the hands of his captors, the silver’s fangs dug a little deeper.

A rasping sound came from outside the narrow door that was the only way to get in and out of the small, dirty room. Ryker managed to suppress a whimper of fear, certain that any moment the lock would scrape and his grinning captors would stalk in with some new torture planned.

Except, he suddenly heard yelling, and that was definitely the booming pop of gunfire. He didn’t dare get up to see; this could easily be some new form of torture they had thought up to torment him. The dragging scrape of the lock sounded a moment later, and Ryker was glad he had remained huddled in his corner where they would have to drag him out into the open to get a good chance at him. But it wasn’t one of his captors.

The clean-shaven face and bright eyes were foreign to Afghanistan, and the white smile spoke of access to decent healthcare. That, plus the uniform, told Ryker he was saved.

“Hey,” the soldier said cheerily.

“Hey!”

Ryker blinked, and suddenly he was standing in bright afternoon sunlight, a man wearing a business suit running toward him. The musty, sewage smell of his dark cell faded, replaced with car exhaust and a floral-scented summer breeze.

“Let him go, man!” said the suited man.

Ryker blinked again, and his eyes followed the length of his left arm, down to the wrist and the fingers he had clamped around the throat of a stranger.

The stranger was choking and spluttering, his fingers scrabbling at Ryker’s sleeve and his dark-brown eyes bugging out as his face turned purple. Ryker immediately let go, stepping back from the stranger. This time he knew what had set him off. The stranger had been walking behind him, and his shoe had scraped on the concrete. A sound so similar to that damned cell lock opening and suddenly Ryker was gone.

He couldn’t keep doing this. Ryker looked at the man crumpled on the ground, gasping for air, and knew he had to find another answer. Any time he went out into a crowd, even one as small as the sidewalk in front of the grocery store, was one too many for him.

The stranger wasn’t injured, just scared, so Ryker bent to pick up the plastic bag of groceries he had dropped.

“Sorry,” he said softly before hurrying off. If he made it back to his apartment without having another episode, he would reevaluate his circumstances. He needed to find somewhere he wouldn’t be a threat to anyone else around him, and that meant leaving the city.

Ryker didn’t have a choice.

MY REVIEW – 3 1/2 stars

Lots of action, suspense, and drama packed into this novella…

Alpha wolf, Ryker, came back from war damaged. He avoids people, and the pack, to ensure he won’t accidentally hurt anyone. But Chess, the Wolf who had a crush on him in high school, isn’t ready to give up on him.

Overall, the novella was good. I gave it 3.5 stars because of Ryker’s character. He’s well-written and believable. However, the story is a bit light when it comes to Chess’ character and the relationship between him and Ryker. Even though it’s a novella length story, I think even adding another 1000-2000 words would have been sufficient to thread in enough extra bits to build the relationship between the main characters. The book description pretty much lays out the entire story for you except the ending.

If you’re looking for a quick read that’s high on action with a bit of romance, give Wounded Alpha a try.

MY REVIEW

5 stars!

I admit I wanted to read this because I’m a John Carpenter fan. I loved the artwork and the storyline held my attention from beginning to end. While the story was mostly predictable, there were some unexpected twists that kept me entertained. The artwork alone is enough reason to add this one to my collection. If you’re looking for horror that’s not overly gory, you can’t go wrong with Sacred Hearts. Great for young adults, and adults who are young at heart.

A gripping, fast-paced read with gritty artwork, Sacred Hearts is a must-have for horror fans!

MY REVIEW:

5-stars!

A stunning, if bloodthirsty, retelling of Alice in Wonderland! By far the best one I’ve read…

Clara leads a relatively normal, boring life, until the day she spots a man in the courtroom with bunny ears. Little did she realize seeing him would be the start of an amazing adventure. But tumbling down the rabbit hole is nothing like the fairytale. Wonderland is full of danger, and Clara is their only hope of survival.

I’ve always loved the character of the Mad Hatter and Ms. Moreno’s version is positively delicious! All dark, brooding, and mad… Hatter is intriguing and sexy. How could Clara not fall for him?

Their path is drought with danger, bloodshed, and death… but their love and Clara’s bravery will help save Wonderland.

Absolutely fabulous! I can’t wait to see what happens next in the Sons of Wonderland series. I’m hooked!

BOOK REVIEW: Seeker by Suzana #youngadult #bookreview

Mila meets a boy who is not quite human. He’s drawn to her even though she’s not supposed to see him. Nobody can escape death, but Death can’t escape Mila.
This book is recommended for ages 16+ due to adult content.

MY REVIEW:
3-stars

Death is feared by many, but there’s one girl who captivates him….

The book description sounded like an amazing paranormal read… but that wasn’t what I got.

The story of Silas and Mila took me by surprise. It’s definitely more of a Christian romance than paranormal, if you could call it romance. While I enjoyed parts of the story, there were a few things that made this an uncomfortable read. The relationship between Mila and Silas develops too quickly once she reaches the age of sixteen. She allows his feelings for her to be her guide and Silas’ conviction that they’re destined for one another makes Mila doubt her feelings and herself. She quickly swings from one extreme to the next. For me, that part of the story wasn’t romantic in the slightest.

Silas’ almost overnight transition to talking about God all the time and suddenly wanting to be a minister doesn’t come across as being from his devout faith. It has a more troublesome feel to it, as does Mila’s constant need to defend him and his beliefs. It set off warning bells for me with more of a cult vibe. If the author’s intention was to spread the news about God, she nearly made me want to run far in the opposite direction as quickly as possible. The character of Tara in particular is a great example. She’s exactly the sort of Christian who runs people off. You can be devout in your faith without beating everyone else over the head with your bible.

The relationship between Mila and Silas in the last chapters somewhat redeemed the story for me. Yet even through her excitement over their future, she still questioned her love for him. After they have sex, she’s suddenly madly in love. While I didn’t agree with their relationship, not as it was written, I enjoyed seeing her happy with him toward the end.

The sudden explosion of Christianity aside, the book held my attention. It’s definitely unlike any teen book I’ve ever read. But reader be warned, there are no happy endings here.

BOOK REVIEW: The Haunting of Hartley House by Eve S. Evans #paranormal #thriller

Book cover for The Haunting of Hartley House

What could cause a happy father to commit a horrific murder suicide?
Nadia has spent years in foster care wondering what would have pushed her father to do something so awful. As an adult—and a national bestselling crime writer—she once again encounters her childhood home… in the newspaper.
The home harbors more secrets than she could ever have imagined.
As she researches, an idea comes to her; why not join up with the paranormal team working there to clear the paranormal negative energy from the house? As the sole survivor of a horrific experience, she might help them find what they’re looking for… and it’ll be fantastic fodder for her next book. Except Nadia has no idea what’s in store for her at the house, or what’ll happen when the survivor that shouldn’t have lived returns.

MY REVIEW:

3-stars

The Haunting of Hartley House lacked the suspense I’ve come to expect from a book about a haunted house. There were times it felt more like the author was telling me what happened instead of showing me. I did enjoy the story, but it came across as very two-dimensional. The “haunting” parts were a bit too flat. I didn’t experience the spike of anxiety or fear when the evil entity was present. Even though we’re told it’s there, a creepy voice and unexplained shadows didn’t lend the book enough of a horror vibe. AI will say the prologue was very well done. It set a tone I’d hoped would carry throughout the book. All in all, it wasn’t a bad read, but it wasn’t thrilling either.
