As the royal court embarks on a tour to solidify Dante’s claim to legitimacy, whispers of war and treachery follow their every step. EXCERPT:

His jaw flexes. “You used your magic again.”

“Dante—”

“You promised you wouldn’t,” he says, voice quiet but taut, threaded with frustration. “You said you’d wait. You said you’d let Ezra figure it out.”

“I never promised,” I snap back, chin lifting. “You asked me not to, but I never agreed.”

“You bled, Celeste.” He leans closer, his voice low, heated. “I could tell something was wrong, even from the water. And what I couldn’t see, Nadya filled me in on.”

Of course she did.

“I had to help you.” The words come out louder than I intend, sharp with the emotion I’ve been burying all day. “They sent armed soldiers after you. You were bleeding underwater. You could have been pummeled by a f***ing tsunami. You don’t get to ask me to sit and watch you die.”

His hands flex, fists clenching just beneath the surface. “And what if helping me had killed you instead?”

I stare at him, my breath shallow. I don’t have an answer—not one that would make him feel better.

He paces a few steps through the water, raking a hand through his hair until it curls wild and damp around his temples. “Gods, you’re so damn stubborn.”

“And you’re so damn arrogant if you think you can tell me when and how I’m allowed to use a power that’s mine.”

He turns sharply, water sluicing off his chest, his gaze fierce enough to stop me in place. He crosses the space between us with quick, sure strides—and suddenly, he’s there, his hands finding me beneath the water, one arm locking around my waist, the other curling so that his hand is tugging the hair at the nape of my neck.

The heat of him burns through the chill. My breath stutters.

“Of course you’d fight me,” he mutters, his voice hoarse against my cheek. “Even when I’m trying to protect you.”

“And of course you’d push me,” I breathe back, “even when I’m trying to save you.”

The air thrums between us, thick with something neither of us is willing to yield. My pulse hammers as his thumb grazes the side of my throat, slow and reverent, like he’s trying to memorize the beat of my heart.

“I told you,” he says, his forehead almost brushing mine, “you bleed for no one.”

“And I told you,” I whisper, “you don’t get to decide that.”

His jaw tightens—and then, in one breath, his lips are on mine.

Chapter One

Storm

I was dying.

The ache in my bones made me restless, but I lacked the
strength to move. Pain, deep and throbbing, paralyzed my limbs. The tear in my
wing stung, sharp and unrelenting, but it didn’t rival the burning in my eye.

I shivered against the growing chill in my limbs. Dragon’s
bane was relentless. Only time remained before the poison quenched my internal
fire. And then my heart would stop beating.

In the meantime, I endured the delusions that dragon’s bane
forced on my mind, memories, nightmares. Recollections of long-dead and newly
dead friends. Scenarios, both fictional and real, played out in my mind’s eye,
twisting and turning so that every situation turned toxic. Hate, anger, and
bitter regret churned through my being. I groaned deep in my chest and longed
for the coming end. Anything to stop this torture.

As I drifted in and out of consciousness, fighting to
maintain vigilance until the end, the sound of a plaintive whine cut through my
tortured thoughts. I cracked my good eye open.

“Beggar.” My voice vibrated painfully in my throat.

The dark-brown dog with floppy ears sitting in my line of
sight brightened up. He hopped onto all four of his paws and shook himself. A
cloud of dirt and grit exploded from his coat.

I closed my eyes again, too tired to care.

The dog nudged my talons. I slit my eye open again. His
thick brown tail whipped back and forth as he watched me. He was a solid
creature, though surprisingly agile. He whimpered and did a strange backward
shuffle as though encouraging me to follow him.

“No.” My lungs ached, irritated by the poison that I had
accidentally breathed in the day before when I incinerated the foolish fae that
attacked me. Or had it been mere hours ago? I found I didn’t care. My head
throbbed.

With a bark, Beggar bounced on his two front paws and then
glanced over his shoulder before he whined and turned in a tight circle.

My eyelid dragged downward as my ability to fight the poison
ebbed. The acidic scent of dragon’s bane filled my senses in a rush, yet
another sign the poison was permeating deeper into my body. “Go,” I told the
dog.

At least he could escape.

“He can’t. They are guarding the door.” The sound of soft
footfalls announced the invader far too late. My hearing must’ve been affected
as well. I had missed her arrival. The voice sounded feminine.

I drew in a sharp breath and lifted my head. No metallic
scent meant she carried no metal weapon and wore no armor. Still, that didn’t
mean she was unarmed. I blinked through the film blurring my one good eye.
Despite my best efforts, it refused to focus.

She was a slender, pale-faced blur carrying a lantern of
some kind in the darkness of my makeshift refuge. “Have you come to kill me?”

“No.” She bent down and scratched the dog behind the ears.
He leaned eagerly against her legs and then pranced around, desperate for more
affection, foolish creature.

The female ignored the begging dog and approached. “I wish
to heal you.”

I huffed in disbelief, producing a pathetic cloud of smoke.
My fire was cooling faster than I expected.

“What happened to your eye?” she asked, tilting her head to
the side.

“Another dragon’s claw.”

“And your wing?”

I tucked both of my wings closer to my torso. My pain
intensified, but I ignored it. “Are you taking inventory for the butchers out
there? Making sure I have all the essential parts so they can sell them off
when I am dead?”

She grimaced before resuming her perusal. “If it is a rip, I
don’t think I can heal it, but—” She peered up at my head as she walked around
to my right side, out of my good eye’s range. “I think I can do something for
your injured eyes, though.”

“They are more valuable as a matched set?”

She glared at me. I felt it more than saw it—a disconcerting
sensation. My eyelids dragged down again. I gave in to the poison’s pull and
dropped my head, resting my chin on the ground.

She moved around my snout with agitation in her tread. Had I
been stronger, I would’ve reared back away from her. As it was, I didn’t even
try. Instead, I forced my eye open. She pressed her palm to my snout.

“What are you doing?” I rasped out.

Healing you.

folklore, Elisa Rae loves a happy ending. Noblebright characters, dastardly
villains, and chemistry between characters delight her. When she isn’t writing,

Guest Post:

The idea for Crimson Jewel sparked from a dream. It all started with Ruby using a strange staircase to hide from a bear. (The lore about random staircases throughout National Forests is fascinating.)  The dream ended with her being captured by a hot giant who really did say, “You’re not welcome here, human.”

I didn’t struggle writing any of the scenes. My biggest struggle was whether Ruby should make a seriously bad decision—one that is heavily frowned upon, yet reasonable to human nature, especially a 22-year-old with no worldly experience. Occasionally, people message me when they get to the end of chapter 27. Thankfully, most forgive me by the end of the book.

Excerpt:

Sitting down on the bed, I stared at the heels. They were the final straw of imposter syndrome. You could clean me up, dress me in fancy clothes, and decorate me in jewels, and I still wouldn’t fit in. But it was better than starvation or being eaten by a pack of wolves, so I
pulled on the ridiculous shoes. Unsteady as a newborn filly, I wobbled over to the full-length mirror. I yanked on the crop top, trying to make the fabric longer.

I glanced at Sid, who was watching me intently. “No, judgment,” I chided, not used to so much exposed skin.

Together, we peered out the door, confirming the hallway was empty. With a hand pressed against the wall for balance, my stilettos and I teetered along. I was about to give up and go back to the room to find a different mode of transportation when somebody chuckled. Recognizing the deep timbre, my irritation flared and heat crawled up my cheeks.

I spun around as fast as possible without falling on my derriere. “What? You don’t have anything better to do than laugh at me? Don’t worry, I’m headed back to the room to change out of these stupid shoes.”

“No, I’m sorry. I apologize.” Raiden held up a hand. “You’re just so fierce most of the time, I didn’t think a stupid pair of shoes would be your demise.”

I had to give him an A for effort. He was trying to control his laughter.

“Everyone has their kryptonite,” I said.

His gaze slid down the length of my body. “That they do.” He sounded resigned.

I was surprised he understood the reference, but I didn’t have time to ask before my ankle buckled.

Raiden caught me under both arms, gripping almost my entire ribcage with his hands. The weight of my breasts rested on his thumbs. An uncomfortable warmth pooled in my stomach, and shivers skated over my skin. He didn’t seem to notice.

“Are you okay?” His gray eyes were level with mine. The pulse in his neck, right above the open collar of his shirt, thumped in rhythm with the rapid beat of my heart.

I took a deep breath and released it slow. “Yes. Thank you.”

He helped me stand, then let go, leaving behind tingling imprints of his hands around my chest. “Do you think if I escort you, you can walk in those things?”

“Yeah, but can’t I just go change?” I whined. I didn’t like relying on anyone. Besides, being close to him made me feel weird. The force was strong in this one. It wasn’t the same as being around Loch—he made me feel self-conscious, like a peasant around a prince.

He glanced down and checked his silver watch. “You can, but being late is heavily frowned upon around here.”

“Okay,” I said, not wanting to be rude.

He held out an elbow, and when I looped it with my own, his skin was searing hot against mine.

“Do you feel okay?” I touched his arm with my free hand.

“Yeah, why?”

“You’re so hot.”

A charming but cocky smirk curled his lips. “Thank you.”

I smacked his arm lightly. “No. That’s not what I meant and you know it. It’s like you have a fever.”

“We naturally run hotter than humans.”

Funny, my temperature ran around 100 degrees, which I’d always thought odd, but my mom had assured me it was normal. She’d convinced me a lot of strange things were normal. Like taking vials of mine and Kevin’s blood to work with her. She said she did it because of her job.

“Earlier, you referred to me as a young lady, and now I’ve been demoted to human again?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah, about that. I owe you an apology. I was mad. You interrupted my investigation and I let my irritation get the better of me.”

“Is human a derogatory term?”

“It can be. Some giants don’t like humans. Others, well . . . they like them a little too much.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Redness crept up his neck, staining his face pink. “Oh, for Fie’s sake. I’m just making this worse.”

I didn’t argue.

“I don’t dislike humans,” he clarified.

“Dude, should I get you a shovel so you can dig this hole deeper?”

He snorted, then choked out a laugh, his deep-set eyes all but disappearing behind his wide smile. “Yes, please, so I can finish burying myself.”

Like any good millennial, romantasy books are my secret guilty pleasure. I’ll be the first to
admit I thought the ACOTAR series was top tier in this category- until I read this book. Forget fairy bat boys, this book unlocked a fantasy I didn’t even know I had- getting smashed by giants.

Action, romance, sass, adventure, this book has it all. The characters are raw and real and this is a brilliant take on an old nursery rhyme. I read it in two days, I couldn’t put it down and I’m definitely adding A Gordon to my list of favorite authors so I don’t miss any of her next

BOOK REVIEW: My Little Tyrant by YoungDa

Tyrant turned toddler!

After realizing she’s inside her favorite novel, Ellenfiela uses her “prophetic powers,” a.k.a. her knowledge of the story, to make money! This catches the eye of the imperial palace, and she’s recruited to help the emperor, who has an unusual problem. But this wasn’t in the original novel, was it?!

Genres: Romantasy, Possessed, Master-Servant

Available at Manta!

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

I stumbled across this one earlier this year, and for whatever reason, had to take a break from reading. I think life just got too hectic. But I made the time to finish it today, and I’m so very glad I did!

Ellenfiela was the a truly awesome character! I loved her whit, her sass, and even found her to be quite cunning at times. Sicar, the dragon turned child, was hilarious and added a lot of comedic relief. Then there was the emperor, Persilion. He came across as stand-offish and downright rude at first, but the more you read, the more you realize it’s more of a defense mechanism. He’s already lost so much. But by being cursed and turning into a four year old, he learns to have faith in others, and that perhaps not everything that happens is always his fault.

I loved how caring Ellenfiela was, and the moments when Persilion turned back into his adult self, you could see the affection the two had for one another clearly — although clearly not of the romantic variety while the emperor was stuck as a small child. They learned a lot about one another during that time, and formed a bond that could later turn into love once the curse had been broken.

This manwha has quite a bit of action, magic, conspiracies, and so much more! If you want a story that’s full of heart, adventure, and has a satisfying ending, then you don’t want to miss out on My Little Tyrant.

Disclaimer: I read this web comic through a Manta subscription and am voluntarily leaving a review. This review is only my opinion.

Now she was waiting for her fourth and final date.

Eamon.

Goodness, anticipation is everything.

She couldn’t believe he wanted to go out with her on a  real date. Most guys found her too  intellectual. It wasn’t  her fault she owned a bookstore and loved to read.  History, fiction, romance, fantasy, sci-fi—it didn’t matter.  Everything was interesting to her. No genre was off

limits.

The buzzer sounded, and she waited for Eamon. He  arrived and took his seat. He didn’t say anything. She  didn’t either. They sat for a moment, looking at each other,  his blue eyes to her green eyes.

Abruptly, the air surrounding her turned hot, but it  wasn’t the kind of hot that made you sweat. It was the  kind of sexual intensity that could consume a person, only  to let go once it had been satisfied. Opaline fought the urge  to fan herself.

Like a foggy night, the room around the two of them became hazy. Eamon reached across the table and touched  her cheek. Her body had a will of its own, and she leaned into his hand, closed her eyes, and waited for him to  kiss her.

“Opaline? Opaline, are you all right?”

“Wha-what?”

The room was clear again when she opened her eyes.

Eamon hadn’t kissed her. She had imagined the kiss. He  hadn’t reached out to her. But he was now. He didn’t touch  her cheek. like she had envisioned. Instead, he was  touching her hand. Until he wasn’t.

Goodness sakes alive.

“Sorry. I guess the excitement of the night has gotten to me,” she said, recovering. “Did you ask me something?”

“No problem. I asked what you like to eat. If we’re  going to go out on a date, I’ll have to find a restaurant  because I don’t cook.”

“I haven’t technically agreed to go out with you.” She  laughed nervously.

“I’m not going to let you say no.”

“Oh, is that how it’s going to be?” Opaline reached  across the table and took his hand. “I guess I don’t have a  choice, then. Yes, I would like to go out with you.”

“Great. Does tomorrow night work for you?”

“You do work fast,” she said, lowering her voice, which  came out in a low silvery tone.

“Only when I need to.”

She knew he was implying other things, and she  smiled again, wishing he had kissed her.

The buzzer ended their date, and Opaline stood. Most  of the other attendees had finished their dates too. “I hate  to rush things, but I need to wrap things up for the event.”

“If you would like, I can help you with the cleanup,”  Eamon said.

“That’s so thoughtful, and here I was thinking you  only liked to give the orders.”

She saw by the way his head tilted to the side that her  reply had caught him off guard. He looked like a kid caught  with his hand in the cookie jar, and he was having a hard  time coming up with a comeback. He mustn’t be used to  word games like her customers at the bookstore were.  They usually gave it right back to her. Eamon, on the other  hand, was still at a loss for words.

“Yes, I’d love your help. I have to stick around until  everyone leaves. I’ll make an  nnouncement to let them  know what time we have to be out of here. Then I can—no,  we—can start.”

“Sounds good. I’ll round up my sister to pitch in too,”  he said.

Opaline heard him chuckle and wondered if he had  offered his sister’s help without her knowledge.

I was born and
raised in the cold and beautiful Minnesota, but I escaped to Illinois for
seventeen years to raise my two boys, and now I call Florida home. My husband

EXCERPT

Balor

Adjusting my leather jacket, I stepped into the clubhouse, letting the door
swing shut behind me. Casual attire suited my alter ego — jeans, a plain
T-shirt, and the jacket that was more than just a piece of clothing. It was
a symbol.

The low hum of conversation filled the room, mingling with the scent of
leather and beer. The clubhouse had an air of camaraderie, the kind that
came from shared secrets and mutual respect. Balor’s Saints MC — my
club. My men. Even if they didn’t realize it yet.

I nodded to someone across the room, my gaze sweeping over the familiar
faces. Collin lounged on the couch, his eyes fixed on the TV screen. The
crime drama playing out seemed a bit too close to home. I’d heard the
whispers when he’d come to town. Seen the warrant myself. He’d
seemed genuine when he’d said the crime had been justified. Still. I
liked to make sure he wasn’t killing anyone while he was here.

I’d built this club gradually, but the idea had come to me about
twenty years ago. Maybe slightly longer, or shorter. As long as I’d
been alive, forget days blurring together. Entire years did. Collin had
joined us about five years ago. I knew for a human that was a decent amount
of time. For the rest of us, it was barely a blip on our radar. None of
these men had known one another before I’d brought them into the club,
and they hadn’t all moved to town even close to the same timeframe.
But somehow, we worked well together, even though we all had a darker side,
including the human. My club brothers weren’t saints — despite our
club name — but we didn’t harm the innocent.

I took in the sharp angles of his face, the pale blue eyes that seemed to
not miss a thing. I didn’t think anything in the room escaped his
notice. Collin was always watchful. I’d wondered if it was because of
the life he’d led running from the law, or if it was something else.
Right now, he seemed at ease. His dark hair was short, the faintest hint of
a five-o’clock shadow along his jaw. He didn’t bother to look my
way as I crossed the room to take a seat beside him.

I watched Clay and Jackson play a game of darts. My gaze moved to the TV. I
didn’t need to look at Collin for what I had planned. I doubted
he’d even realize what I was doing. My magick slid along my skin, like
the soft caress of a lover. I let it slither out, searching. When it brushed
against Collin’s thoughts, I felt the familiar tingle in my
fingertips. He didn’t even flinch. No indication he knew what
I’d done. I’d gotten better at being subtle. No images of blood
or fear. I did see a few images of him fucking one of the strippers down the
road. I wouldn’t deny it made my dick hard. I’d never claimed to
be a saint. Even my club brothers didn’t know how true that was.

“Show any good?” I nodded to the TV.

He snorted. “It’s crap. But it’s better than
nothing.”

The low hum of the TV nearly drowned out the sound of the darts hitting the
board. Someone had turned off the lights in the front of the building, and
shadows crept along the walls in the great room.

Collin shifted on the couch. “Didn’t expect to see you
tonight.”

I offered a faint smile. “Had some business in town. Thought
I’d stop by, have a drink with my club brothers.”

Clay pulled a dart free from the board a few feet away. I watched as the
muscles in his back bunched under his shirt. He threw the dart, and I heard
the thud as it hit the target.

“Not bad,” Jackson Mays said. He pulled his own darts free and
stepped back.

Jackson’s gaze lingered on me for a moment, and I saw his eyes
darken. Not with lust. No. The necromancer didn’t want to fuck me. He
wanted to pull me apart and see what made me tick. I’d have to watch
him. I’d never admit it, but I didn’t know everything he could
do. I’d need to look into his kind a bit more, see how much of a
threat he could be. Another thing I’d been putting off. It
wasn’t like Jackson hadn’t been here for about a decade already.
Then again, there was a chance I wouldn’t be able to dig up much,
regardless of which contacts I used. He seemed like the type who knew how to
keep his secrets buried.

His raven hair was neatly trimmed, his clothing immaculate. I’d
noticed he preferred darker colors, and today was no different. The shirt
and jeans he wore were black, even his boots.

“Think you can do better?” Clay asked.

“I can try.” Jackson’s tone remained calm and
measured.

Clay threw his last dart and joined us, grabbing a beer from the fridge
before he settled into a chair. “You’ve got to be cheating.
There’s no way you’d consistently win against me, not when my
reflexes are better.”

“Just lucky.” Jackson’s lips twitched.

Ben, who’d been sitting at the table, looked up from his phone. He
seemed to see right through me. His dark hair was mussed as if he’d
run his fingers through it repeatedly. A perpetual smirk played on his lips,
and I could see the appeal he’d have for a lot of people. He had a
roguish charm and oozed danger. His looks and confidence didn’t hurt
either. I knew better than to assume he was harmless. I could see it in the
way he carried himself. The others didn’t seem the least bit concerned
about him.

I’d heard a little about him before he joined the club nearly twelve
years ago. Not enough to satisfy my curiosity. He kept to himself a lot.
I’d considered trying to read his thoughts but worried it might scare
him off. I’d wait it out. If he was a threat, we’d figure it out
sooner or later. I’d hoped it would be later. I liked him, and I knew
the others did too.

He stood and made his way over to us. His movements were almost ethereal in
their grace. There was something almost intimate about it, and it made me
understand why so many people offered up their necks to him, or any other
veins he wanted to sink his fangs into.

“This is what we’ve come to? Watching bad TV because
we’re too lazy to find the remote?” he asked.

I chuckled. “It’s not so bad. Beats staring at a wall.”
These men were my brothers, not by blood but by choice. And yet I lied to
them every fucking day. If they ever found out… No, it wouldn’t
do me any good to go down that road. Not until I had to. Sooner or later, my
identity would come out. Nothing remained a secret forever.

Clay took a swig of his beer. “Heard some weird things going on in
town. You hear anything?”

I shrugged. “I hear a lot of things. Some of them might even be
true.”

Ben snorted. “You’d think people would have better things to do
than gossip.”

“Humans have always gossiped,” I said. “It’s in
their nature. But supernaturals are even worse.”

Collin leaned back, stretching his legs out. “So, what’s the
word on the street, then?”

I let my gaze drift over him. “I hear there’s a human in town
who likes to play house with a bunch of supernaturals. As in keeping them
like pets.”

Jackson’s eyes darkened, and I wondered if he’d be seeking out
that person and liberating the enslaved people. Our people. There
weren’t a lot of humans in this town, not compared to the number of
supernatural beings, but the ones we did have didn’t typically cause
trouble. But this person was new and clearly didn’t know the rules
yet.

“Know what else I heard recently?”
