BOOK REVIEW: More Than We Bargained For by Fiona West #bookreview #NetGalley #RomCom

Release Date: November 9, 2020

Wanted: renter for rural Oregon mountain lodge. Single mom divorcees named Starla preferred.

Starla Moore despises a mystery, and there’s no bigger mystery than Sawyer Devereaux. He comes into the library on Thursdays like clockwork, but rarely talks to anyone else. Not that she despises him; after all, he’s easy on the eyes, quick-witted, and that southern accent makes her swoon. But in the midst of a divorce, her only romance is the bookish kind. Worst of all, crashing with her bestie won’t be an option soon, especially since her final fling with her husband had one very specific unintended consequence…

Regaining consciousness with his head in the cute librarian’s lap was a rude awakening; Sawyer thought his health problems were under control. Sans driver’s license, there’s no way he can live in his little cabin alone…or keep up with the anonymous book donations he’s been leaving to make Starla smile. When he finds out she’s struggling financially, he proposes a trade: his housing for her driving. Surely he can keep his feelings a secret for a few more months…

He’s given up on his dreams; she’s just figuring hers out. When the rumors start, will it push these two misfits together…or drive one of them out of Timber Falls for good?

More Than We Bargained For is the fourth book in the Timber Falls romantic comedy series, but can be read as a stand-alone. If you like town meeting rants, neighborly concerns that become something more, and water fights that heat things up instead of cooling them down, buy this book now. This book contains no open-door sex scenes, no cheating, and a happily ever after. Claim it now to read the series Publishers Weekly called “small-town romance done right.”

My Review:

5 stars!

Want a cute, sweet romance that will give you warm fuzzies? Read More Than We Bargained for… you won’t be sorry.

I love that our perfect hero has a vulnerable side, and our feisty heroine has her own insecurities. Their imperfect yet perfect for each other. All Sawyer wants is to help the beautiful librarian he’s been crushing on. Diagnosed with a life changing illness, he’s decided happily-ever-after isn’t in the cards for him, but he’ll do anything to make Starla happy and keep her safe. Sawyer just didn’t realize that by helping her, he’d fall deeper in love.

Starla dealt with her cheating husband for far too long. Even after filing for divorce, she just can’t shake Charlie, who seems to feel his infidelity isn’t a big deal. Charlie’s arrogance made me want to reach into the pages and throttle him, and yet he was a really good dad so I couldn’t hate him. But I loved Starla’s determination, even when her life takes an unexpected turn. Her banter with Sawyer was cute and oftentimes funny. They were adorable together.

This page-turning romance will make you smile, make you laugh, and leave you yearning for more.

Elle Rush
Publication date: December 1st 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Twelve friends.

Ten-year reunion.

One $50,000,000 lottery ticket.

The only reason Dr. Doug Little returned to work in his dying hometown was to keep a promise. Two years and he’s gone. The only things getting him through his first couple months are his ten-year reunion and working with his old high-school crush.

Although Jackie Dunn loves her quiet world, her small-town life gets even harder when her part-time hospital job is in peril. If not for her friends’ encouragement, she’d head to the city for better opportunities for herself.

At the reunion, all the returning graduates chip in for a lottery ticket, but nobody expects to win the fifty-million-dollar jackpot. Doug’s share should be more than enough to buy his freedom, but the town doesn’t want to let their new doctor go. Jackie is the only thing that makes Hopewell bearable; the problem is the more time he spends with her, the more he forgets how much he wants to leave.

When he finally finds a way to escape, Doug realizes he’ll be doing it alone. Jackie doesn’t have much time to show him the life he accidentally created for himself in Hopewell is far better than anything his millions could buy him anywhere else.

EXCERPT:

Doug moved so he was standing beside Cameron. The sunlight coming through the window highlighted the sweat on Andie’s forehead. “Are you feeling okay, Andie?” he asked.

“Umm.” It wasn’t a yes, but it was an acknowledgement. “Jason, can you read those again, but slower this time?” she asked.

“Andie, did you pick a ticket where we didn’t match one number? I hate those,” Tyler complained.

Doug did too, but he had a feeling that wasn’t the source of Andie’s distress.

She was still sweating. “Tyler, watch Andie,” Doug ordered.

Tyler sat up straight and held out a hand, ready to grasp Andie’s biceps in case she toppled over. It looked like a real possibility.

Jason rattled off a string of numbers again.

Andie swayed on the sofa cushion. Tyler’s grip kept her upright. “Jason, move,” Doug ordered. He and Tyler tilted Andie until she lay across the sofa. “Andie, I need you to slow your breathing. You’re hyperventilating.”

“We won,” she gasped. Her blonde bangs were plastered to her forehead.

“How many numbers did we match?” Jason asked.

“All of them,” she said breathlessly.

Doug swiped the ticket out of her hand. “Breathe. Slowly. In, two, three, four. Out, two, three, four.” His eyes went to the ticket; a tiny, blue dot under each number. “One more time, Jason?”

“Four. Eight. Twelve. Nineteen. Twenty-nine. Forty-seven. Forty-eight.” His voice cracked when he asked, “Did we really get them all?”

Doug wanted to hyperventilate himself. He nodded. Seven out of seven. That was a jackpot win, if it were true. “I think so. Maybe somebody should look on another site. Or run out to the gas station and see what they have posted in case Jason’s app is wrong.”

He expected yelling. Shouts. Happy, hysterical tears. Not dead silence.

Scarlett hit the carpeted floor with a thump. Her legs had gone out from under her. “Do you know what the prize is this week? Fifty million dollars. That’s, what, five million dollars each?”

“Four and change,” Freddy said. “There are twelve of us. Andie wrote all our names on the ticket when she bought it.”

He’d forgotten. Doug flipped the narrow sheet and saw the names printed on the reverse. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Who’s going to double-check the winning numbers?”

They checked the numbers again, this time on the lotto’s website using Evelyn’s laptop. Then Cameron and Freddy took a field trip to the gas station. Freddy live-streamed the drive, including a long, in-depth focus on the posted, winning numbers. Scarlett texted Noah, Kirby and Jonathan, ordering them to Evelyn’s immediately. She accepted no excuses.

Fifty-million dollars’ worth of winning numbers.

Fifty million.

Excerpt:

A small smile crossed his face though it never reached his eyes. “I can explain.”

“Explain what, Brody?” The question came out harsh, even to my own ears, but I plowed on. “A year. Not a text, phone call, letter, or f*ck you. Nothing. You ditch me and expect me to be happy to see you.”

“Savvy,” he began, stepping toward me.

I shoved him back until he fell onto the same rocker he had been sitting in when I arrived. “Don’t you dare “Savvy” me. The name is Sheriff Douglas.”

He held up his hands. “I know you’re upset.”

The anger that had been simmering became a full-on boil. “F*ck you, Brody. What? Did you find yourself a woman and couldn’t bring yourself to tell me? Did you go on a year-long bender after graduation?” I turned my back on him—perhaps the hardest thing I’d ever done. My heart lurched and tears burned my eyes. I wouldn’t cry in front of him. I wouldn’t!

“You are so damn pigheaded, Savannah. But I can understand why you’re upset. I’ll come back later when you’ve had a chance to clear your head. Then maybe you’ll listen to me.”

With that, he sidestepped me and made his way to his SUV. He opened the door and paused. “I do love you.”

With a Herculean effort, I managed to hold the tears in until he was out of sight. Those tears burned a hot path down my cheeks, as I did exactly what I didn’t want to do.

Cry a river over him.

I stood on the porch, facing the lake. The sun shimmered over its surface, but was a blur to me. The shimmer became diamonds dancing atop the water as the torrent of tears slowed and finally burned out.

Leaving me raw…

And empty.

Ryder had no idea what to do with the red-headed woman at his side. She’d fallen asleep during the movie and he hadn’t wanted to move her just yet. He knew he needed to put her in the guest room, but his beast wanted her closer. That one sniff had been enough to confirm his suspicions. She wasn’t just some random woman. She’d found him because they were destined to meet.

Somehow, telling her that she was his mate didn’t seem like the best idea right now. She was scared, and for good reason. Nothing, and no one, would harm her as long as she was under his roof. It didn’t even matter to him that she carried another man’s child. Once he claimed her, both of them would be his. His bite would not only mark her as his mate, but would claim her unborn child as well. No one would ever doubt that the mother and child belonged to him.

The news came on and he turned down the volume so it wouldn’t wake up Saxen. He waited, hoping they would discuss the body in her apartment, and that there would be good news that the nasty Martin had been captured. There was a brief mention of a drug related homicide, but no details. Ryder continued watching, hoping they would talk more about it before the news went off.

Toward the end of the program, they flashed a picture of a man wanted in connection with the homicide, and a picture of Saxen as a possible missing person. He knew they would have to let the police know she was safe, but he wasn’t sure how to do it. He didn’t want to tip off Martin that she was here, and until he knew the Crosgove Corners Police Department didn’t have a mole, he wasn’t going to say shit to anyone. The safety of his mate came first, and if the law didn’t like it, they could kiss his ass.

Ryder lifted Saxen into his arms and carried her upstairs. He paused outside of the guest room, but then kept walking to the master suite. Easing her down onto the bed, he removed her shoes and covered her with the comforter. He stripped out of his clothes and pulled on a pair of pajama pants before slipping under the covers and pulling her into his arms. She molded to his body, as if she sensed that she was safe with him. Ryder held her close and vowed to do whatever it took to make sure Martin never bothered her again.
