Alex Malachi ran his fingers through his hair and debated his next move. He’d been without a woman for a year now and wanted companionship. Strike that. He wanted a playmate. Someone soft and sensual. Someone who could handle his dark side and still come back for more. Someone who wasn’t interested in giving him shit because of his profession.

Did she exist? Fuck if he knew.

He strode through the Indigo Club to his usual box. Most of the time he wanted privacy at the club. Tonight, he wanted to switch things up. He had a good idea what kind of woman he preferred, but not who.

Dante, his younger brother, stood at the entry of the private box. “Here again?”

“You’re here, too, aren’t you?” He didn’t dislike his brother, but of his two brothers, Dante drove him the craziest. “So?”

“What are you trying to do? Bankrupt the family?” Dante followed him into the box. “Or are you here for a business deal?”

“If I said deal, you wouldn’t believe me.” He sank into his favorite blood-red overstuffed chair. “Why are you here?”

“I’m overseeing the goods and the take.” Dante sat beside him. “This is our highest profit club, and I want to see how I can replicate it over in Worthington Heights. I’m seeing a lot of tits and bare asses, but no sex. Is that what draws them in? The lack of sex? Or is it that the customer thinks he can join and will eventually get a chick to fuck him?”

Alex gritted his teeth. His brother lived to make a buck. Alex did, too, but he wasn’t as bold about his intentions. Money made the world go ‘round, but a firm grasp on the club and power helped. “Guys come to the club because they want to get their rocks off. They want a fantasy. The girls are hot, the spankings hotter, and there are a bunch of subs dying for a master. That’s what keeps the money rolling in.” That and the booze sales. Fuck. He knew damn well they’d get shut down if the Feds found out not everything they sold was strictly legal, but the money was good, and it kept the clients happy.

Besides, what the Feds didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.

Dante opened the curtain. “There are some real lookers out there tonight. Lots of paying customers, too. I hear there’s one hell of a whipping demo going on later.”

“So I’m told.” He sipped the whiskey left for him and swept his gaze over the girls. None of them caught his fancy. Maybe he’d been to the club too many times. Maybe he didn’t want to meet any of them.

A thin girl strutted across the edge of the main playroom. Her navy-blue pasties glittered as she moved. Her breasts weren’t large, but enough to hold on to during sex. The thong left little to the imagination. She’d pulled her blonde hair up in a ponytail with a blue ribbon. The look screamed wholesome, yet sexy as fuck. His mouth watered. He must’ve missed her when he’d appraised the room. Something about her called to him. He opened his mouth to request her, but realized he wasn’t alone. “Dante, blow.”

“Excuse me?” Dante crooked his eyebrow. “You’re dismissing me?”

“Yes.” He glared at his brother. “Check the stocks of whiskey and champagne behind the bar. See if we’re low.”

“No.” Dante folded his arms. “I saw who you were staring at. She’s young.”

“Go away.” He wasn’t good at being nice to his brother, not when Dante didn’t cooperate. He snapped his fingers. Lloyd, the bartender for the private boxes, arrived a moment later.

“Sir?” Lloyd brought in a tray with a fresh glass of whiskey.

“Take Dante back to the bar for a check of the stocks.” He accepted the drink and resumed staring at the skinny blonde. She did appear young, but she wouldn’t be working at the Indigo if she were underage.

Dante growled, but followed Lloyd out of the box. Alex relaxed. He did better with women when his brother wasn’t lingering. He strode to the edge of the box and sipped his drink. The moment she strayed over by the box, he’d summon her.

The blonde picked up two empty wine glasses and a bottle. When she strolled up to the box, she stopped short. “Sir?”

“Put those down. I want you.” Alex leveled his gaze. “Now.”

“Yes, Sir.” She abandoned the glasses and bottle in the nearby bus tub, then wiped her hands on the towel and joined him in the box. Her breasts jiggled with each step, and the pasties caught the light.

Christ, he wanted to touch her.

My Review:

5-stars

When an angel gets a little bit naughty, and a devil gets tamed, what do you get? A page-turning story you can’t put down!

The first thing that drew me to Un/Sacred was the artwork. I loved the overall style, with the innocent yet sexy angel and bad boy devil. The thought of an angel falling for the devil made me want to take a closer look. Still, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I found the dialogue between Angelina and Damiano to be hilarious. While there were sweet moments further into the story, her constant misunderstanding of his sexual innuendos kept me smiling and laughing from page to page. Some may consider Damiano’s thoughts and actions juvenile or gross humor, but I enjoyed his character. He was exactly the way I’d expect a devil or demon to be portrayed. Angelina’s wide-eyed innocence was cute, and while Angelina and Damiano were complete opposites, I think that’s what made the story work so well. Even after she gave in and put the poor devil out of his misery, she still managed to keep him on his toes.

If you want a fun storyline and nice artwork, you can’t go wrong with Un/Sacred. Who doesn’t need a bit of humor in their lives with just the right amount of heat tossed in? I enjoyed every second of this story and now I feel the need to hunt down anything else Mirka Andolfo has created.

*Disclaimer: I received an ARC for an honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review Un/Sacred. The review above is only my opinion.

Excerpt from Taking Julia

“What do you want, deadhead?”

It was bad enough that Julia Lennox had been captured and almost killed on this miserable fucking mission. She was tired and her body ached with each step as she made her way through the ruins on foot. Running into a vampire now when she was just about to make it home had the potential to really piss her off.

And he wasn’t just any vampire. Oh, no. What fun would that be? It was the vampire known as Rick, rumored to be one of the oldest of his kind, who stood leaning against the ruined metal stalk that had once been a street light. Her pack’s leader had pointed him out to her once when they were on a stake out. The legends about him were enough to curl the fur on any werewolf. Julia had heard he’d been a Spanish soldier hundreds of years ago during the time of King Philip II. For such an old guy, she had to admit he was one of the most captivating creatures she’d ever seen.

Still, she’d have to be pretty fucking careful with this one. With the dying rays of the evening sun gleaming off the brown silk of his hair and reflecting in his sinfully dark eyes, it would be so easy to forget the danger he posed. His mouth was sexy beyond words, his skin preternaturally fair. His long, hard body was encased in black leather and the pose he struck gave him the appearance of someone relaxed and enjoying the sunset.

That he could tolerate any level of sunlight spoke volumes about how indestructible he really was.

Did he think to put her at ease with his body language? Just act casual? Right.

Fatigue dropped from her like a heavy coat. Her situation had gone from tired and grumpy to holy shit in about sixty seconds. Rick posed a greater threat than any she’d faced so far in her life and she knew it.

He stood watching her with an unnatural stillness, his stare unblinking and intense. Facing this particular vampire was like nothing Julia had ever experienced before. On one hand, she felt like a small animal immobilized by its fear of a terrifying predator. On the other hand, she stood staring at him like a drooling idiot, mesmerized by the sheer beauty of him.

Fear had its uses and Rick was definitely someone to be afraid of. For all she knew he could read her thoughts. Many of his kind could read minds.

Julia had to get a grip, control her thoughts and her feelings.

Folding her arms across her chest, she decided to go for bored and impatient instead of get me the hell out of here which was how she really felt.

“How are you tonight? Julia, isn’t it?” The way he said her name with his Spanish accent brushed her with unexpected warmth. The fact that he even knew her name took her off guard. From his point of view, she was pretty new to the game. She’d been a shadow chaser for three years now, but to someone like him that probably seemed like a matter of minutes.

“I’m trying to get home. Rick, isn’t it?”

Grinning at her, he nodded. Damn, he had a nice smile.

Perfect teeth. How did they keep their choppers in such good shape for thousands of years?

“Home from where?” Pulling away from what was left of the metal post, he gracefully moved over the jagged pieces of asphalt like he was weightless. He came to a stop in front of her, so tall she was forced to look up to meet his gaze. “What have you been up to, Julia?”

Arrogant asshole. Vampires were so self-important. Just because they were immortal they thought they knew more than anyone else. Well, living hundreds of years didn’t mean you knew fucking everything. They also thought they had license to get into everyone else’s business.

They were sorely mistaken if they thought they could push the werewolves, her kind, around. Very soon the vampires would find out they weren’t alone in their immortality and Julia couldn’t wait for that day. That dream was the reason she put her life on the line with each mission that sent her into the Shadow Zone where a mysterious group of humans had unearthed a dark pathway to unending life. The werewolves would obtain that secret one way or another. Then they’d be on even footing with the vampires and be able to truly defend themselves. It was only a matter of time.

“Don’t worry about what I’ve been up to,” she told him, trying to keep the tremor out of her voice. “Don’t you have bigger things to be concerned about? Like what you guys are going to do for blood when the humans are done destroying themselves?”

“I’m very interested in what you’ve been up to.” His fingers brushed her chin, but she yanked her head away from his touch. His gaze moved over her face.

What was up with this? Rick stood there gazing down at her like an attentive lover. Yet beneath that handsome façade, Julia could sense his determination. To do what, she had no idea. It couldn’t be good.

“You have too much free time on your hands, don’t you?” Julia marched around him, and he let her. She felt his gaze on her the entire time but she didn’t look back. Maybe he’d just let her go.

“Take it easy,” she threw back at him and kept on walking. Damn it all anyway that her motorcycle had been destroyed. If she hadn’t been on foot, maybe she wouldn’t have run into the bloodsucker in the first place.

“Julia.”

Shit. She should have known he wouldn’t make it easy for her.

She came to a startled stop when she spotted him now sitting on the twisted, blackened metal of what had once been a car several feet ahead of her. Only a damned vampire could vanish and materialize like that. His elbows rested on his knees and he sat there watching her with all the ease of someone innocently waiting on his girlfriend.

Yet there was nothing harmless about him. His underlying power was unmistakable.

Julia came from a strong bloodline among her kind and she was a well-trained killer. She wasn’t, however, stupid enough to think she could take this guy in hand-to-hand combat. Most vampires, yes. Not this one. Rick was too strong. If all the stories she’d heard about him were true, he could probably rip her to shreds with his mental powers and not even lay a hand on her.

If she was going to get out of this alive, she had to use her wits. “My business is not your business. I’m asking that you let me go about it.”

“Your business is my business. I know what you’re looking for out there.”

The direct approach. She liked that. Only she wasn’t naïve enough to play little vampire mind games. Try to keep your mind clear. Some of her kind were trained specifically to deal with vampires and could recognize their individual powers easily.

Her area of expertise, however, was humans. She knew only the basics with vampires.

“If you know what I’m doing, then we have nothing else to talk about, right?”

“We have much to talk about, Julia.” Rick laced the fingers of his hands before him. “I want to know if you’ve found what you’re looking for.”

“What’s it to you?”

“I just need to know. It’s very important to both of us, isn’t it?”

Well, yeah. The vampires had to know that a large number of humans had achieved immortality somehow. Weren’t they supposed to know everything? Yet in their superiority, they probably just figured out that her kind knew about the human discovery too. They had to realize that the next step for the werewolves was discovering how to achieve immortality themselves.

With the human population diminishing at an alarming rate, the vampires would have to feed on something to sustain their kind. Werewolf blood was living blood and apparently many vampires already considered them a viable substitute. Werewolf, the other red cell. Random murders among her kind increased every day. All of the victims were suspiciously drained of their blood. Just like predators in the wild, vampires preyed on the most vulnerable — the elderly, women. It had everyone in her pack on red alert. The only chance the werewolves had to survive now was to become immortal as the vampires were. Their current numbers were nowhere near what the human population had been twenty years ago. The vampires could deplete the werewolves in a single decade unless they took action and stopped them. Besides, the humans had discovered a better way to live forever than vampirism and the whole dead deal. A way that simply stopped one from getting ill or growing older. A living solution.

“What do you want?” Julia was blunt. “You want me for a snack? You want me to tell you what I know? Either way I’m fucked, huh?”

The amusement faded from his expression as he sat watching her. “You’re not fucked, Julia. You’d never believe me if I told you that I just wanted to help you, now would you?” “Fuck no.” Was he kidding? Help her to what? Find her jugular vein?

“I do want to help you.” He was so slick in keeping his voice low and calm. “All I’m asking you to do is tell me if you found what you were looking for.”

“And why would I do that?” He’d just have to kill her. She wouldn’t betray her mission by telling him anything. Crap, this could be bad.

“So I can help you.”

Oh, no. He couldn’t just toss that casual smile at her and expect her to bend to his will. No way. Amazing the effect that smile had on her though… “If you know my name, you know what I am.”

Rick nodded.

“And if you know what I am, you know there’s no way in hell I can tell you what I’m up to. So do what you’ve got to do.” She couldn’t stop him after all.

Like a vision from a nightmare, only the guy was hot, he rose from the car and approached slowly, determinedly. Yes, she could have run but she wouldn’t have escaped. Better to show a little courage and face her fate. Werewolves were made of tougher stuff than the vampires gave them credit for.

“I was afraid you wouldn’t cooperate.”

Sucking in her breath at the calm way he said that, Julia steeled herself for whatever was coming.

Rick waved his hand directly in front of her eyes once he reached her and Julia’s world went black.

Prologue
Duray Horde Vault

After adjusting the stack of scrolls tucked beneath his arm, Matthias opened the door to the vaults and headed down the stairs. He had no idea what was contained in the newest additions to the horde library, but Sadie had insisted he take them, look through them, and archive them appropriately. The sheer number of scrolls he was carrying guaranteed weeks of sequestered reading, and he was looking forward to it. Matthias often disappeared for days within the vault stacks, and no one cared. He was moody and antisocial at the best of times and preferred his own company to that of other dragons.

At the back of the library, he dropped the scrolls unceremoniously on top of the desk he’d claimed as his, decades ago. Since no one came down to the vaults, no one had challenged his claim. As far as the horde was concerned, the vaults were Matthias’s domain. The soft thump of little feet echoed in the cavernous space, dulled slightly by the papers and leather-bound tomes that filled the shelving. Matthias knew who those steps belonged to, and his disposition lightened a bit. Sadie’s son had a thirst for knowledge that Matthias admired, even if it did mean his quiet sanctuary was invaded on a regular basis by the child.

“Hi, Matthias.”

“What are you doing down here, Luca?”

The fledgling hefted a book that was nearly a third his size, and Matthias recognized it as an old human-written story about a witch. He wasn’t sure it was an appropriate choice for a fledgling of just eight years to read, but he’d learned early on that Luca was not an ordinary little dragon. There was something special about him: something that reminded Matthias of the child he’d raised centuries before.

“Nothing in that book is factual,” Matthias told the boy.

“That’s good, because the witch ate the kids.” Luca winced before turning around and disappearing into the shelving.

“Don’t make me come behind you and straighten up,” Matthias ordered, his voice carrying through the room despite him not raising it the slightest bit.

Twenty entirely-too-quiet minutes passed before Matthias rose from his chair to go check on Luca. He found the book the boy had brought back exactly where it should be, but Luca wasn’t there. Returning to the main aisle, Matthias glanced down each row as he passed until he finally found Luca sitting on the floor with his back against the stone wall with a book opened across his little legs.

“This isn’t a row you’re allowed to be in,” Matthias said, shocking the little boy who was clearly immersed in what he was reading.

Matthias squatted in front of him, closed the book, and willed the panic he felt explode in his chest to not show on his face as he pulled the book from Luca’s grasp. He stood and placed the tome well above the boy’s head. Luca was entirely too curious for his own good.

“But I liked that story,” Luca complained. “It had a dragon married to a wolf, and I didn’t know that could happen, and I want to see what happens next.”

Matthias swallowed thickly. Luca thought he was reading a fictional story, but Matthias knew all too well that the Chevalier family had been real, and he’d be damned if he put the idea of interspecies matings into the head of the horde matriarch’s son. Pushing the memory of his own interspecies mating to the back of his mind—because what did it matter anymore?—he looked down at the fledgling.

He steered the boy into a more appropriate area of the vaults to be explored and then returned to the tome he’d confiscated. Pulling it off the shelf, Matthias thumbed through page after page of his own historical account of the Chevalier, removed the most informative and thereby damaging chapters, and then replaced it on the shelf. Luca was only going to get older, taller, and more curious with age. Matthias wouldn’t risk him finding the book again.

Later that night, after darkness had fallen and the compound had grown silent with slumber, Matthias burned one of the last firsthand accounts of the Chevalier—his own. Why he’d thought it was a good idea to put that horror down on paper, he’d never understand. Youthful folly. All that was left to do was locate and obtain Alietta’s journal, the final remaining written history of the family and subsequent events Matthias had yet to destroy. For now, he was content knowing the only memory of the Chevalier that existed in the Duray Horde was now locked safely away inside his head; a place no amount of childhood curiosity could penetrate.

Killian

The sensation of crashing back into my body forced me to sit up and take a deep breath. I gasped and tried to slow down my jolting heart. It wasn’t unusual for me to suddenly return to my body once I’d fed. But this… This time it had been almost violent.

I threw back the covers and swung my bare legs to the floor, letting the cold hardwood hit my feet, grounding me. I had been on the mortal plane for generations, but I’m not human. Not completely anyway. I survive by feeding off others. Yeah, I know, it sounds parasitic. Which I guess is accurate.

I moved from the bed and crossed the room to the pack of cigarettes lying on the desk. Nasty habit, smoking — one I didn’t need or particularly like. Since it couldn’t kill me, I used it to bring me back to full awareness after I returned from my astral travels. The scent of sulfur almost overpowered the smell of lit tobacco, and I inhaled the menthol deep into my lungs. Sitting on the edge of the dresser, I took a few more drags of the cigarette before I reached over to turn on the lamp.

Even though I didn’t need the light to see, it showed that my red nail polish was starting to chip. Bollocks. I shrugged and took another inhale of the acrid smoke and held it in while I tried to remember every moment of this last feeding. But my thoughts always strayed back to my first memories of him.

It had been close to a year since I walked through a portal and spied the gorgeous man standing outside a large house. I’ve been around a long time, and I’ve seen many good-looking humans, but something about him drew me. The connection was instant, and I flew toward him, unable to stop the need in my soul to touch him.

Though he wore a suit, I could see the outline of his muscular form. His hair wasn’t red or brown, but a perfect mixture of the two. His full beard and intense caramel eyes begged me to touch him. And I wanted to. I was pure energy at that point, but once I brushed him, there was a rush through my soul like touching a live wire. I threw back my head and let myself feel his innermost needs. They filed against every jagged edge of my cursed being, smoothing me out and filling parts of me that were missing.

I attached to him, not wanting to let him go, picking up bits and pieces of his thoughts and memories. His energy felt so pure and substantial, I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to disengage. I looked past him to the small outdoor building where two men kissed and ground against each another, and felt this man’s energy rise steadily. It was almost like taking a shot of tequila. I felt the warmth of his sexual desire spread through me. Awareness of his name seeped into my brain, along with the lust energy I siphoned. Barclay. I wanted to climb inside Barclay’s body and bathe in his essence, but my energy reserve was filling faster than I wanted. I knew I’d unlock when I was full, whether I wanted to or not.

The redhead we watched turned his green eyes toward us. Barclay’s instant shame at his voyeurism pushed me from his aura. The most interesting thing was that I wasn’t sent back to my corporeal form straight away. This hadn’t happened to me before, so I knew it was because he was mine.

Later, when my anima geminae, — soul twin — went back to the house to retrieve an item he’d forgotten, I felt the spike in his desire again and moved behind him to see the men he’d just been meeting with. They were having the hottest sex I’d seen in fucking decades. My energy reserves filled so quickly that I was jerked back to my body. The change was so abrupt that I felt like part of me had been ripped away and left with him. It hurt in so many ways.

I kept going back to him, though. Once I feed on someone, I usually go on to the next person. Sometimes I can stay with one person for multiple feedings, but only if they have the energy to spare.

My vivid imagination combined with my love of reading and sci-fi. As a kid, I spent hours writing stories and poems while listening to my large collection of vinyl record albums.

My goal as an author is to tell stories that help others find enjoyment, or to escape life for a little while. I want the characters in my head to become as real to the reader as they are to me, and I hope they find another heart to settle into. I also want to interact with the people who read my books, because you never know where your next friend will come from.

#CoverReveal Badger (Roosters) by Harley Wylde and Paige Warren #newadult #olderman #Romance @HarleyW_Writer @AuthorPaigeW @changelingpress

Coming July/August 2018

Publisher: Changeling Press

Cover Artist: Bryan Keller

Badger – I went to prison for ten years after beating a man to death. He deserved it, and then some. I only wish he’d suffered more. Now I’m free, but things aren’t the same as when I left. The little girl I once saved is now a tempting young woman with curves in all the right places. I should stay away, far away, but I’m drawn to her like a moth to a flame. The Pres of my club adopted her, so she’s definitely a no-fly zone, but fuck if I don’t want her with every breath I take. A little sample wouldn’t hurt anyone, right? As long as Griz doesn’t find out, I’ll keep breathing. Sneaking around should be easy enough. I never counted on falling for her, or finding out she was carrying my kid. Now what the fuck am I supposed to do? I’m a long-time repeat offender. I can’t walk the straight and narrow. Can I?

Adalia – I’ve worshiped Badger ever since the night he saved me. But what started as a young girl’s infatuation has grown into something more. I know he’ll never see me that way, or at least I thought he wouldn’t. When we’re together, it’s like we just can’t keep our hands off each other. It’s probably against his parole for us to be together, but he doesn’t seem to care. The heat between us is undeniable. He didn’t promise me forever, just right now. But neither of us counted on me getting pregnant, something that wasn’t supposed to happen too easily, and I have no freakin’ clue what to do. I’m scared Badger will run for the hills. He never asked for this, but then neither did I. One thing is for certain. If he doesn’t man up and my daddy finds out, there will be hell to pay. No one can hide from the President of the Devil’s Fury MC.
