Synopsis

Music isn’t all that Scorned Gods has to offer.

Iconoclast (Scorned Gods 1): Death metal group Scorned Gods needs a new singer. Firestarter’s former lead singer Jason Summerfield and his lover Julian Kristados are back in the United States, and Jason is itching to get back on stage. What he gets, however, is far more than that — and not all of it is good.

Delirium (Scorned Gods 2): Jason and Julian have acquired a new lover, Scorned Gods’ bassist, Saul. But a cult of vampires is hell-bent on starting a war between mortals and vampires. Its first prime targets are psychic vampires like Jason’s bandmates…

Shackled (Scorned Gods 3): With help from an Abaddon ally, Jason and his bandmates will have to act quickly to stop Harlan Yates. The escaped mortal, Daniel, is the unwilling beacon that can bring destruction upon them all.

Karma’s Brutality (Scorned Gods 4): With their allies from Abaddon, Jason takes the fight directly to Yates. Jason and his bandmates from Scorned Gods are about to discover combat is not for the faint of heart. Not everyone will come out unscathed, but that’s the nature of war.

Publisher’s Note: Scorned Gods (Box Set) contains the previously published novellas Iconoclast, Delirium, Shackled, and Karma’s Brutality.

The door slammed shut, and Saul Calderon glanced at his bandmates. “Well, that was a waste of time. Now what?”

Twins Nicholas and Dana Reid both sighed, though Dana spoke up first. “Good riddance,” she said. “There are other singers — most with more talent than that jackass had. We can find someone.”

“Hopefully in enough time to actually learn the songs,” her brother grumbled.

Saul sat on the stool beside his amp, his bass resting on his lap. “Where do these fuckers come from? You’d think someone who claims to be a ‘big fan’ would actually know our songs.”

“Hell if I know,” Dana said with a shrug. She set her sticks on her snare and redid her fire-engine red ponytail. Although she and Nicholas were twins, they weren’t identical. She looked nothing like her brother. “We need… new blood.”

A shiver snaked its way up Saul’s spine. None of them had fed in a few days, and although they didn’t drink blood, the urge for it occasionally hit. Dana gave him a knowing look. She’d been the one to bring them together years ago. Back then, they’d only sensed kindred spirits who needed energy to survive. The music had been a happy accident. But even among vampires, their kind were pariahs. Rumors ran rampant about the band members’ true natures, though no one knew the exact truth. Sometimes, they tossed in a random blood feeding onstage just to drive the crowd wild, but Saul preferred tantric energy to blood any day.

“Yo, dude!”

Fingers snapped in front of Saul’s face, and he shook his head. Nicholas gave him a quizzical look.

“Sorry. Just… zoned out, I guess,” Saul said. “Dana’s right, though. We need someone new, someone this fucking city hasn’t heard.”

“Good luck with that,” Nicholas said. “That idiot was number… shit, I don’t even remember now.”

“Maybe we’ll get lucky.” Saul wasn’t sure he believed that himself, but it felt good to say, at least. His cell buzzed in his pocket, and he tugged it out to glance at the text message. “Huh.”

“Who is it?” Dana asked.

“Some guy named Jason Summerfield. Says he sang with Firestarter.”

“The pyro band?” Nicholas grinned.

Saul shrugged. “I suppose. I don’t know of any other Firestarter.”

“Didn’t they break up a few years ago?” Dana began packing her things. “I caught one of their shows. If it’s the same guy, he’s fucking good.”

Saul read the text aloud:

My name is Jason Summerfield. I found your ad and am looking for a new band. I just moved to town a few weeks ago, but I fronted Firestarter for several years in Atlanta.

“What have we got to lose?” Nicholas asked as he put away his guitar.

“I’ll set up a time tomorrow then,” Saul said.

While Noah and Dana finished getting their things together, Saul replied to the text.

Hey there. I’ve heard of Firestarter, though I never saw you guys live. I play bass for Scorned Gods. I’d like to meet and chat, see if you’d be a good fit. When’s a good time for you?

A few minutes passed, and Saul walked Dana and Noah to the front door of his loft. Just as he shut the door, his phone buzzed again.

Anytime tonight would be great.

He texted back, How about eight?

Sounds great.

Awesome. I know a cool little coffeehouse downtown called Urban Joe’s. Need directions?

Nah. I can find it. See you then.

Saul grinned. If this guy was as good as Dana claimed, maybe things would work out after all. He grabbed his laptop off the kitchen table and sat down on the couch. A quick Google search yielded photos, mp3 clips, and vids of Firestarter. Saul stared at a promo pic of Jason Summerfield.

“Holy shit, he’s hot.”

“If I don’t let Godzilla out, I won’t have curtains. Again.” Hayden stepped outside the restaurant and jabbed the numbers on her phone to call her friend, Cole. She needed a ride home.

She clutched her pepper spray in one hand and her purse in the other. No way she’d let some creep-o terrorize her. “I’ve got to get to Godzilla,” she chanted as she waited for her friend to pick up the phone. “I never should’ve let that asshole take me out. Damn grabby hands.” Visions of shredded curtains and one pissed off black cat came to mind. But just like a dog or his monster namesake, if he didn’t have time to wander around the backyard, he destroyed things in her house.

“You never should’ve gone to lunch with him,” a voice said. “Not on Halloween.”

Hayden screamed and whipped around, her purse leading the way. If she was going down, she’d go down swinging. “Who the hell are you?”

The person who’d spoken stepped out of the shadows. “Chill.” He put both hands up. “I’m not armed.”

Hayden inched closer to get a better look at him. Dear God in Heaven, the man was naked and in front of a restaurant full of people. Her gaze roved down his lean torso to the thatch of black hair at the base of his cock. She swallowed hard. Naturally, the crazy man would be good looking. Her luck didn’t run any other way.

“Hayden, honey, I don’t want to hurt you.”

A shiver ran up her spine. Didn’t want to hurt her? How the fuck did he know her name? “Who are you?”

“Godzilla. It’s a stupid name for a cat. My brother would be named Godzilla. He likes to bite and scratch. Although, naming him Fang worked, too. Hildy thinks it’s funny to name us after things we do.” He shrugged. “I just destroyed that set of curtains by accident. I never meant to piss you off.” The man folded his arms. His black hair shimmered, and his eyes glowed the same shade of green as her cat’s. He even had the same odd way of staring at her as if he knew what she was thinking, and he talked like he knew all about her cat.

“Do you want my purse?” She stuck out her hands. “Take it.” The guy might remind her of her cat, but cat shifters were the stuff of legend. Besides, didn’t Halloween bring out the crazies? Yes, he was some lunatic in character trying to scare the shit out of her… and it was working. She shivered. “Take it.”

“I’m taking you home.” He swatted her hands down. “There’s a long story I need to tell you, but the short of it is, yes, I’m a shifter. I chose you as my human, and now I’d like to go home and explain where you won’t freak out.” He inched toward her. “I won’t hurt you, but I will rip the limbs off the asshole who dicked you over at lunch. Now let’s go. It’s freezing, and I’m not fond of showing my ass off in public.”

“No.” She held her ground. “I don’t know you from Adam and you want me to take you home? No way, buddy. Blow.”

“Now that’s just mean.” He scratched his brow. “Okay, look, I come from a long line of shifters. Black cat shifters. My litter had four. Hildy knew about us and protected us from a scientist who would like to use me for some crazy-ass experiment. Somehow she knew you needed me. I’m glad you took me home because I knew you were the one for me.” He stepped closer to her. “Hayden, I need your help. We aren’t legend, and some bad people know about me. You’ve got to help me.”

He crouched down before her and curled into a ball. His human form morphed into a cat. After a moment, the cat sat on his back legs and stared up at her. He even had the tiny white tuft on his chest — the same tiny white tuft like Godzilla had.

“Godzilla?” Hayden swayed on her feet. This wasn’t happening. Her cat was a cat, not a shifter. She collapsed on the nearest bench and rested her head in her hands.

A pair of bare feet strode over to her. She glanced at the legs connected to the feet. The man squatted down in front of her. The mystery man who claimed to be her cat. Tears blurred in her eyes. What else could she do? Laugh or cry?

“Hayden, honey, shifting destroys my clothes.” He tipped his head to look her in the eye. “Let’s go home. I’ll explain everything there. I’ll show you what I am.”

“What have you been told about Shaw Productions?”

I thought over what I knew. “I know that we’ve engaged them on numerous projects, that they’re award winning, and that they have a knack for producing exceptional work.

“And what do you know about Hunter Shaw?”

“Only that he runs Shaw Productions and he’s known for being very talented.”

“He’s also known for being difficult,” Vivienne added. “Sienna, you need to be aware that he is notorious for wanting absolute control on his set. We’ve tried to send a member of our team in the past and he’s disregarded them completely. He intimidates people. This shoot will be a challenge, but it’s a big opportunity for you. The concept was your vision. Here is your chance to see it through.”

I held my head high despite the bundle of nerves now coiling in my stomach. I hadn’t expected to be put into that type of challenging situation by myself. “I understand. I can do this,” I said as confidently as I could manage.

“Good luck today, Sienna. Call me if anything goes wrong.”

I stood and left Vivienne’s office, feeling doubt creep into my subconscious. I was not being sent based on my abilities, it was because no one else wanted to go. I had heard rumors about temperamental directors shouting at junior staff or treating them like they weren’t worth their time. Would that be my fate today?

I pulled in a deep breath as I left the office and got into a cab, ready to review my notes on the way over. I had been hired at Impact Marketing straight out of college top of my class five months ago, and had worked too hard and spent too many late nights to lose momentum now. I wouldn’t let rumors about a difficult director throw me off-track.

I arrived fifteen minutes early and walked into the building. Inside the studio people milled around a coffee machine while the final touch ups were being made to the sets. The space was bigger than I had imagined and there were more people than I expected. I needed to speak with Hunter to introduce myself and make sure we were on schedule. I saw an older man holding a camera, pointing at the set and giving instructions. I gripped my clipboard and walked towards him extending my hand. “Hi, my name is Sienna Rowe. I’m with the marketing team at Impact. Are you Hunter?”

I heard a voice behind my back. “No, he’s my assistant, Jacob. Who are you and what are you doing on my set?”

I turned around and was surprised by the man that stood in front of me. He looked like he was in his mid-twenties, much younger than I expected the owner of a production company to be. He was also distractingly attractive with a powerful presence. He towered over me, his dark hair slightly messy against his forehead. He was wearing a light grey dress shirt. The color complemented his pale blue eyes. He took another step towards me and raised an eyebrow expectantly. I blushed when I realized I was staring at him while he waited for me to speak.

“I’m Sienna, um, with the marketing team? I’m here to oversee the shoot.”

“Nice to meet you, Sienna, but as I told your boss, I don’t need anyone to oversee my shoot. I’ll have the first cut to you later this week.”

Hunter walked past me, the matter clearly settled in his mind. Dumbfounded, I spoke to his retreating back. “But this was my concept and I want to see it through.”

Pivoting smoothly on his heels, Hunter turned and caught me in his gaze. I gasped and took a step back.

“I have your notes, I have your shot list. I have everything useful that I need from you and I’m prepared to do my job. The job that your company has enlisted my services to do. Do you not trust me to do my job?”

The room had fallen as silent as a tomb, everyone watched us. I hated that he was speaking to me in such a condescending tone, that he was dismissing me when I needed to be there. My career and reputation were on the line. “I’ve never worked with you before, Hunter,” I offered as an explanation, feeling small.

“But you’ve heard of Shaw Productions? This is my company. I’m Hunter Shaw, and if you know anything about my reputation you’ll know that I produce only the best work.”

I pressed my hands to my side to stop them from shaking. I couldn’t go back to the office. This was my chance to prove myself. “I don’t doubt that, Hunter, but like I said, I’ve never worked with you before. So if you don’t mind, I’m going to stay and oversee the shoot.”

“And if I do mind?”

People were whispering in the corner. I met his gaze and spoke clearly so that everyone could hear me. “Then I’m staying anyway.”

He just wanted to give the struggling single mom a hand up.
He never thought he’d fall for her.

Clarity — I’ve been on my own since I was sixteen, and I’ve fought tooth and nail to make a life for myself and the son I never planned to have. Caleb is my entire world, despite the circumstances of his birth. Being homeless a second time certainly hadn’t been in my life plans, so when a gruff yet sexy biker offers a bit of help, how can I possibly say no? Doesn’t hurt that the older man is easy on the eyes, and he’s so good with Caleb. I’d thought I wasn’t able to trust anyone ever again, but looking into his eyes, I know deep down he’d never hurt us. It just never occurred to me that I’d fall completely in love with him.

Scratch — The young woman and kid I find sleeping outside my club’s chop shop make me feel things I shouldn’t. Hell, she’s younger than my damn daughter, but it’s obvious she’s been to hell and back, and she’s still fighting. There’s fire in her soul, but the gentle way she treats her son leaves me wanting things I shouldn’t. Like a new chance at a family. What the hell would she want with a man thirty years older than her? When I took her home with me, I never counted on wanting to keep her. I’ll slay her demons, bury the monsters from her past, and then I’ll do the one thing I thought I’d never do… claim an old lady, then make her my wife.

I had no one. My mom had died when I was two, and when my dad remarried, he’d chosen a woman who liked to pretend I didn’t exist. Soon enough, my dad decided I didn’t exist either. Once his new kids starting popping out every few years, I was pushed to the side, and eventually I left. I’d been sixteen when I’d hit the streets, and no one had come looking for me. I was sure that my dad was relieved I was gone. It hurt, but crying over it wouldn’t change anything.

I’d thought I was doing okay when I found a man about five years older than me who offered me a place to sleep and help getting a job. I should have known not to trust him. Things had been fine for a while, but then he’d started asking to be repaid for his kindness. Blowjobs mostly, except for the night he was high on who knows what and decided to take more than I was willing to give. Caleb was the result of that night. Once I’d found out I was pregnant, I’d taken off. Even though the man hadn’t touched me again, I hadn’t wanted to take any chances.

A women’s shelter had helped at first, even found me a job and a place to live. Things had been going pretty well, until two months ago. The little thrift store where I’d been working shut down without notice. I’d had enough in the bank to keep our tiny apartment for another month, and then the money had run out and I hadn’t been able to get another job. So we slept where we could, ate what we could, and just tried to survive.

The church over on Pine Avenue would let me take a shower and would give me a dress out of the donations to wear for interviews, and the nice lady who worked in the church office would watch Caleb for me. I’d applied to every place in town that was hiring, and no one had wanted me. Our situation was bleak, but as long as we had each other, then I’d keep fighting. If Caleb weren’t with me, I might have given up by now. Or decided to join the ladies who worked the street corner on the other end of town. But I’d been a virgin when Caleb’s dad had raped me, and I couldn’t bring myself to take that step. Not yet. I didn’t think badly of the women who made their living that way, but I didn’t think I could do it.

An auto repair shop was just a few more steps away, with a large enough doorway that Caleb and I could hide in the shadows and get some sleep. I checked the hours on the window and saw it wouldn’t be open for at least five more hours, which meant I could rest a little. I’d learned to sleep lightly, so that I’d wake up at the first sign of trouble, or whenever Caleb stirred. I was always scared I’d sleep so hard that he’d wander off and I’d never see him again. Hunkering down into the corner of the doorway, I settled Caleb on my lap and used my backpack as a pillow. My son snuggled against me and closed his eyes.

I didn’t think I’d been asleep for more than an hour when I heard a loud rumble. My eyes opened as a single headlight focused on us, making it hard for me to see. I held a hand up to my face, and shielded Caleb with the other. The light stayed on, but I could barely make out a shadowy figure dismounting from what I’d figured out was a motorcycle. The man approached and loomed over us.

“This is private property,” he said, his voice deep and raspy.

“I’m sorry. We’ll go,” I said, struggling to stand.

I could feel his gaze raking over me. I managed to get to my feet without stumbling, got my backpack straps over my shoulders, then hefted Caleb into my arms.

“Where are you going to go?” he asked.

“Doesn’t matter. I’m sorry we trespassed,” I said. I hitched my backpack a little higher over my shoulder and clutched Caleb to me. I tried to step around the large man, but he reached out and placed a hand on my shoulder.

I froze under that touch, tensing and waiting to see what would happen. Is this where he offered me a place to sleep in exchange for the use of my body? Wouldn’t be the first time I’d had that offer made to me, and I doubted it would be the last. I would do anything for my baby to have a place to rest and food to eat, or nearly anything. We’d struggled and things were bad, but I didn’t think I could handle having strange men touch me. Not after Caleb’s dad, or more like sperm donor. I didn’t think he would come after Caleb, even if he knew my baby existed, but I’d decided not to take any chances. Thankfully, I hadn’t seen him since we’d left. For all I knew, he wasn’t even in town anymore.

“Christ, you don’t even look old enough to have a kid,” he muttered.

My chin raised a notch. “I’m nineteen. Well, almost nineteen. Not that it’s any business of yours.”

I saw a flash of white teeth as he smiled in the darkness. “All grown up then, aren’t you? Eighteen, nearly nineteen, and think you know everything I bet. Why are you sleeping in the doorway of my business?”

I glanced behind me before facing him again. “I told you we didn’t mean to trespass.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“We didn’t have anywhere else to go,” I admitted softly, my arms tightening around my son.

“There’s a lot of expensive equipment in there. Going to steal anything?” he asked.

I felt fire ignite inside me and I clenched my teeth a moment. I might be broke, but I wasn’t a thief!

“No!”

“Come on.” He walked up to the doorway I’d just vacated, then he unlocked the front door and pushed it open.

I hesitated. I didn’t know if I could trust him, and figured my chances were better out here in the open than inside, but what if he was going to offer food for Caleb? Or maybe there was a couch in the waiting room and he’d let my baby rest there for an hour or two. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, but at the first sign he was going to be a perv, I was out of there.

I stepped inside as he flipped on the lights, and I blinked at how bright they were. There was a beat-up leather couch with duct tape holding it together, and a scarred table with a few magazines on top. But the man didn’t stop in the front room. He kept going, so I followed at a slight distance. If I needed to run, I wanted a head start.

He entered a small, cluttered office and turned on a lamp. It glowed softly, the light dim, but there was a huge couch on one wall that looked a little too inviting with its overstuffed arms. It was leather, but unlike the one out front, it didn’t have so much as a scratch on it that I could see. The man pulled a blanket off the back and motioned toward the couch.

“You can rest here a while. I can either lock you in and reset the alarm, or I can stay until you’ve had a chance to rest. I’ll leave it up to you. But know that if you steal so much as one thing, I will track you down,” the man said.

I focused on him and noticed he wore one of those black leather vests I’d seen the local bikers wearing. Scratch — VP was stitched on the front. He was an older man, a bit of gray at his temples and in his beard. I was horrible at guessing ages, but if I had to, I’d place him in his late forties or early fifties. He had the kind of eyes that looked like they had seen far too much, like he’d fought wars I could only imagine but was still standing. He was strong, his muscles stretching the sleeves of the T-shirt he wore, and his jeans encased muscular thighs. He could easily overpower me, and yet he hadn’t come close to me since grabbing my shoulder earlier.

“You can lock us in,” I said. “We won’t take anything.”

He nodded and looked at Caleb, who was yawning on my shoulder.

“When’s the last time the two of you ate?” he asked. “And I mean real food, not something you’ve scrounged from somewhere.”

EXCERPT

I frowned at Scratch. “What do you mean they want me out of here?”

Scratch rubbed his beard. “I didn’t ask questions, but I’d imagine it has something to do with you fucking Tank’s sister the last time you were here. You ran off with her for a few days and I don’t think that went over well with big brother.”

“Shit, Scratch! She’s a grown woman and can make her own decisions. If she has a complaint about our time together, I want to hear it from her.”

He shrugged.

“Do you know where she lives?” I asked.

“I shouldn’t tell you,” Scratch said. “They don’t want you anywhere near her.”

“We’re brothers, man. Come on. I just want to talk to her. If she’s pissed at me, fine. I want to hear it from her.”

He watched me for a moment, then nodded. “I heard she’s been living with Tank. Green two-story house about two miles down the road,” he said, nodding to the left of the compound. “But if Tank beats the shit out of you for going after his sister, you’re on your own. You’ve already been warned away.”

“I’m just going to talk to her. If she wants me to leave, then I will.”

“Don’t stir shit up, Jackal. I’ll send you packing and ask someone else to come help. You hear me?” Scratch asked.

“Yeah. I hear you.”

I got on my bike and went in search of Tank’s house. The car parked in the driveway of the green house looked to be the same one that had been outside the clubhouse that night over two years ago. I killed the engine on my bike and walked up the porch steps, then knocked on the door. A slightly curvier Josie opened the door, her hair up in a messy bun, no make-up on her face, but fuck if she didn’t look gorgeous. Her hips seemed a little wider than before and her breasts looked bigger too. She damn near took my breath away, and I knew I was staring. There were dark circles under her eyes, and there was a yellow smear on her tank top, but I ached to reach for her.

I smiled. “Hi, Josie.”

Her eyes went wide and she stepped outside, pulling the door mostly shut behind her. She cast a nervous glance into the house before facing me again.

“What are you doing here, Jackal?”

“I came to help Zipper and I wanted to see you.”

She nervously looked over her shoulder again through the crack in the door, pulling it closed a little more before looking at me. Something was up, but I didn’t know what. I knew Tank wasn’t in there, so who was? Was there a guy in there she didn’t want me to see? I hadn’t really thought about her hooking up with someone while I was gone, but I should have. A beautiful redhead like Josie? She probably had men falling at her feet.

“You should go,” she said.

“Go, but… What’s going on, Josie? Are you pissed I didn’t call?” I glanced at the door, anger burning in my gut. “Is there someone else?”

“Please, Jackal. I can’t do this right now.”

She stepped back inside, careful that I wouldn’t see into the house, then shut the door. I heard the lock click and her footsteps wander away.

Delphine: Six years ago, I did something really bad, and it chased away the guy I’ve been in lust with ever since my hormones had kicked in. I’d been a stupid teen, and I’d paid the price. But now I need help, and there’s nowhere for me to go except straight to the Dixie Reapers, and the one man who probably never wants to see me again. If Zipper won’t help me, then I’m as good as dead. I’m willing to pay any price, and I will give him anything he wants. Is it wrong that I hope, at least a little, that all this ends up with me in his bed? I’ve never stopped wanting him, and I know I never will.

Zipper: The teen girl who had turned my life upside down now wants my help. If nothing else, I owe it to her dad, legendary tattoo artist Hwan Lee, my mentor, the man who gave me a chance when no one else would. He’s really the reason I left all those years ago. I couldn’t disrespect him by claiming what I wanted. Delphine. Not to mention my ass would have ended up in jail. Now she’s here, and she says I can have anything. Naughty girl. Didn’t anyone ever tell her not to tempt the devil? Because soon, I’ll have her right where I want her — under me and screaming my name —  and I’m never letting her go. As for the men trying to kill her, it’s only a matter of time before they breathe their last. No one hurts my woman.

Delphine

I hadn’t seen Mason in so damn long, and I wasn’t certain my presence would be welcome even now. I’d had a crush on him for as long as I could remember, even when I’d just been a little girl. My daddy had always taken me to work with him, and I’d gotten to know all the guys at his shop over the years, but it had always been Mason who fascinated me. As I grew, my feelings for him changed from that of a little girl to a young woman. It was my fault he’d left, even though I’d never told anyone, and never would. If my dad had ever found out what I’d done…

I took a steadying breath as I stared at the gates of the Dixie Reapers’ compound. No one knew I was here, and I wanted to keep it that way. I was in some serious shit right now, and it wasn’t fair to drop it on Mason’s doorstep, but I didn’t know where else to go. There was no one in my life I trusted right now, not even my own family. No, especially not my own family. Some slut with three kids had convinced my dad to marry her a few years ago, and I’d been pushed to the side. I’d quickly understood how Cinderella must have felt, being given all the crap jobs around the house and shop, and getting nothing in return. At least, as long as I was under the step-monster’s roof I wasn’t getting anything. Moving out helped a bit.

Things were different now, though, and not in a good way. Before Dad had died, I’d moved out. He’d been helping me pay rent, though, so I could be a nicer area. After his death, that helped came to a screeching halt, and I’d been forced to move into a not-so-great place. I’d found out at the reading of Dad’s will that he had apparently left his shop in my care if anything ever happened to him, along with half his life insurance policy. My step-monster only received fifty thousand dollars and the house, which I’d been told had a second mortgage on it. Needless to say, the woman wasn’t happy and would stop at nothing to get her hands on my inheritance. It had taken a while for everything to get sorted out and my inheritance actually handed over to me.

I wasn’t certain if I wanted to thank my dad for trying to take care of me at the very end, or scream at him for putting me in this position. Legally, there wasn’t a damn thing that Tia could do about the shop and money. But then, she’d never been one to follow the rules. I’d noticed some questionable-looking men following me lately, and I wondered if maybe she’d hired someone to do something to me. Especially after a few unexplained accidents happened. According to my dad’s lawyer, if anything happened to me, the money and shop would go to Tia. It had been a provision in my dad’s will apparently, stating that unless I was married with children, then step-mommy-dearest would inherit if I were to die. And since I wasn’t married and didn’t have any kids to leave the money to… yeah, I was pretty much screwed. I didn’t see how that could possibly be legal in this day and age, but what the hell did I know?

The gates mocked me as I stared at them. I could see the shadow of a man standing just on the other side, likely a guard of some sort. He hadn’t called out to me, but then I hadn’t exactly gotten any closer either. I took another breath to steady my nerves and approached, putting one foot in front of the other. My fingers wrapped around the iron bars and I stared at the man on the other side. He eyed me up and down, giving me time to look him over too. He seemed to be a few years older than me. “You here to party with the club?” he asked.

“I’m here to see… Zipper.” I hated that fucking name. To me, he was Mason, would always be Mason. Or maybe it was why he had that name that I hated so much. He’d been part of the Dixie Reapers even when he’d worked for my dad. Then he’d left and opened his own shop. The only times I’d seen him since then were glimpses around town, but I’d always hidden and kept my distance, knowing he probably hated me.

“He expecting you?” the guy asked.

“No. He used to work for my dad. Please, it’s important that I see him. I’m not here to cause trouble.”

The guy snorted and made a shooing motion. “Sorry, doll, but if you aren’t expected, you’re not getting in. You’re either an old lady, or you’re here to suck cock. And since it appears neither applies to you, you can just turn around and walk away.”

“But you don’t understand…”

He pointed again toward the driveway. There was only one way I was getting inside, but I didn’t know if I had the courage to follow through. I rubbed my hands up and down my denim-clad thighs and blew out a breath.

“Then maybe I’m here to party,” I said, wishing immediately that I could call back the words.

The man’s eyebrows rose, and he opened the gate. I cautiously walked past him, a little worried he might reach out and grab me, maybe force me to suck his cock. I hadn’t ever done something like that before, and the thought of sucking off a complete stranger made my stomach bubble and flip. I hurried toward the clubhouse and raced up the wooden steps. When I reached the door, I slowly pushed it open. Music and smoke battered at my senses as I stepped inside.

My eyes went wide when I saw the mostly, and in some cases completely, naked women prancing around. A few couples were openly having sex in front of everyone, and my heart started racing in fear. What the hell had I gotten myself into? And did I really want to see Mason in this setting? I knew he wasn’t an angel by any means, but I didn’t like the thought of him being with all these women.

I caught sight of him toward the end of the bar, his Dixie Reapers leather cut looking every bit as sexy on him as I’d thought it did six years ago. I felt a tingle working its way through my body, and my nipples hardened as I got closer to him. A few people jostled me along the way, but I forged ahead, hoping like hell I hadn’t made a huge mistake…

EXCERPT:

“She’s dying,” he told Jaxon.

The Omega whined and tears gathered in the younger wolf’s eyes. It was obvious that Jaxon was close to her, maybe closer than Torren had thought at first. His beast didn’t like the idea at all, and he had to fight back another growl.

“How do you know her?” Torren asked. “Have you ever…”

Jaxon shook his head. “We were never intimate, but she was my friend. She refused to come stay with me, saying it wouldn’t be fair. I gave her what I could, but her circumstances… She needed a miracle.”

“She’s not your mate?” Torren asked.

“No,” Jaxon said, his voice breaking. “There has to be something… What if she’s the mate to someone else in the pack? It’s possible, right? They could bite her, and she’d heal. She doesn’t have to die, right? Or what about a witch? Maybe a witch could heal her?”

“Jaxon.”

“Please,” the Omega begged. “You have to save her.”

Torren focused on the young woman again, leaning a little closer. He breathed her in, trying to get through the scent of death and blood, looking for the subtler scent that would be uniquely hers, the one he’d smelled earlier. He found it, barely, but it was there. The closer to death she got, the fainter that smell became. His vision shifted as his wolf came closer to the surface, his beast distraught over the broken woman. The wolf inside of him whined and whimpered, pawing at him and urging him to do something.

His wolf had never shown any interest in a female before and it baffled Torren. Not even when he’d been mated to Gwen had his wolf cared one way or another about the female in his life. Why did the beast react to this small human? His fangs lengthened, making Torren jolt. Fur sprouted along the backs of his hands and he felt his muscles swell, nearly bursting the seams of his shirt and jeans.

His Omega moved closer, his gaze locking on Torren’s extended fangs. Excitement flared in the other wolf’s eyes.

“Bite her, Alpha,” Jaxon said. “You can save her. And maybe she’ll save you too.”

He focused on the other wolf and saw hope blazing in Jaxon’s eyes. Was it possible? Was Olivia his mate? His fated mate? Yes, he’d claimed Gwen, but it had been an arranged mating. They’d never actually bitten one another, but had a mating in name. They’d been intimate on occasion, but there had never been any true passion between them. When she’d gone into heat, she’d practically begged him for relief, and he’d granted it. But not once had they ever touched one another out of more than obligation. At the age of thirty, he’d assumed he’d never find the one female meant to be his, the one who called to his wolf, so he’d settled when the opportunity presented itself. It seemed impossible that after all this time, he’d found his mate. And she was dying.

Torren leaned over Olivia, lapped at the blood along her shoulder, and growled as her taste exploded on his tongue. His vision sharpened and his pulse quickened. Mate. His beast became excited, nearly spinning in circles in Torren’s mind, like an overenthusiastic pup. If he’d had any doubts, he didn’t now. Without any hesitation, he bit, his fangs digging deep until they hit bone. His saliva entered her body, mixing with her blood. Torren growled again and released her. He licked his lips as he sat back and looked down at the woman who now belonged to him. For however long she’d live.

It was too soon to tell if she’d survive both her beating and his bite. Torren realized he may have claimed yet another female destined to die, but he hoped the fates wouldn’t be that cruel. All he could do was wait and see if she began to heal. His enzymes would bond with her cells, and her body would have slight alterations from his claiming, as well as rapid healing. But only if she lived through it. It wasn’t often his kind claimed a human, and he’d heard tales of the females not surviving the bite. He could only hope that Olivia was a fighter.

“Take your mate home, Alpha,” Jaxon said softly. “She should be in your bed when she wakes.”

“If she wakes,” Torren muttered.

“She will,” Jaxon said. “She has to.”
