EXCERPT

At the office, I did my work as usual, trying to keep a low profile. I smiled when people walked by, but tried to mind my business otherwise. The women didn’t seem to like me, not since my very first day. I kept to myself. Well, mostly.

Landon Wells was a close friend and colleague, and the only person I really talked to in the office. As a gay man, he had it rough. The other guys in the office either avoided him or made snide remarks about the fact he preferred men. There were definitely grounds for him to file harassment charges against them, but he just let it slide. He always said that there were small minds everywhere, and it was easier to ignore them than to try fighting the whole world. Still, I would have slapped them with a lawsuit. But that’s just me.

My email dinged and I opened a message from Nancy, Sebastian’s secretary. Groaning, I dropped my head in my hands. Great, another meeting. I was still completely embarrassed over the last one. Sebastian had asked me a question repeatedly, but I’d been too busy fantasizing about having sex with him to hear anything he’d said. I’d been mortified when Landon nudged me with a snicker and nodded toward the boss, knowing exactly where my mind had been — in the gutter.

I grabbed my pen and notepad, and headed for the conference room, wishing there was a way I could sit with my back to my boss. It was the only way I wouldn’t fantasize about him; at least I thought I wouldn’t. Then again, Sebastian was yummy enough that I’d probably daydream about him regardless.

When I entered the room, only a few people had made it. Hurrying over to Landon, I claimed the chair next to his. Brett Sawyer sat on my left and leered at me. I rolled my eyes and turned to Landon, planning to ignore the annoying Brett.

“What do you think the meeting’s about?” I asked softly.

Landon shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine.”

I chewed on my lower lip, a little worried. Our stocks had dipped a bit in the last few weeks, and I’d heard rumors of budget cuts. Usually that translated into lay-offs. Not only did I not want to be parted from my delicious boss’s company, but I couldn’t afford to lose my job. My apartment might not be much, but it was mine. No, it wasn’t my living expenses that I couldn’t afford, it was my shopping bills. I had maxed out all of my credit cards, much to my horror. But I was addicted to clothes and shoes. My overstuffed closet bore witness to this fact.

When Sebastian walked in the door, I felt my heart flutter in my chest. No matter how many times I saw him, my body reacted to him on sight, wanting him with an intensity that bordered on being embarrassing. Good thing men weren’t entirely like dogs, otherwise they would have smelled my arousal every time the man came near me.

He smiled broadly at all of us, everyone now gathered around the large table waiting on whatever news he had to impart.

“Good morning. I know you’re probably wondering why I called this meeting and I promise to keep it brief.” He met our eyes, his gaze resting on each of us in turn. Did he linger a little on me, or was that just wishful thinking? “I’ve decided to bring in some fresh blood to help with marketing so my cousin, Andrew Montcrief, will be joining us starting Monday. He’s a likeable guy so I’m sure everyone will get along well with him.”

Brett’s hand slid up the slit of my skirt, and I turned and glared at him. When he just grinned unrepentantly, I smacked him in the arm — hard. It wasn’t the first time he’d tried something like that and I doubted it would be the last. The man couldn’t seem to keep his hands to himself and didn’t understand the word “no” in any language. I’d complained to H.R. a few times, but they hadn’t done anything. So I’d decided to ignore him as much as possible.

“Zoey, is there a problem?” Sebastian asked, one eyebrow arched.

“Um, uh… No.”

“So you were swatting a fly on Mr. Sawyer’s arm?”

“Uh, no… that is, um…”

“I’ll see you in my office after the meeting, Zoey.”

Amidst the snickers at the table, he turned away from me and immediately began speaking again. My face flamed in embarrassment, and I looked beseechingly at Landon. The louse only shrugged and grinned, knowing full well why I’d smacked Brett.

I couldn’t focus for the rest of the meeting and was somewhat surprised when everyone stood to leave. It had ended without me hearing a single thing — not good. Thankfully, it looked like Landon had taken excellent notes so I could just get everything from him later, even if it meant enduring a bit of teasing about my infatuation with the boss.

As I stood, Sebastian motioned for me to follow him to his office. His assistant glared at me as I walked past her desk and into Sebastian’s office. When I heard the door click shut behind me, my shoulders stiffened. While being alone with him might have been my ongoing fantasy, I wasn’t sure I trusted myself. With my luck, I’d assault the man and practically beg him to have sex with me on his desk, the floor, or anywhere else he wanted.

“Zoey, care to explain to me what happened today?”

I swallowed. No, not really. “Well…um…”

“Sometime today, Zoey.”

“Brett tried to stick his hand up my skirt,” I blurted out, inwardly wincing. Subtlety was not my strong suit to be sure.

“I see.” He pursed his lips. His beautiful, full, kissable lips.

I jerked my attention away from his delightful mouth and focused on his eyes. Not much better really, but I had to look somewhere. My gaze started to drop and I forced it to stay on his face. I would not look at his crotch in hopes of seeing how big his cock was, I absolutely… okay, so I peeked.

“Do you want to file a complaint against him?” he asked, and my eyes jerked back up to his face.

“No, that’s not necessary.” I wasn’t about to tell the man I’d already filed several complaints. I somehow doubted he wanted to hear that his H.R. department wasn’t doing an adequate job.

Both eyebrows lifted. “He’s done this sort of thing before?”

I nearly snorted. “Uh, yeah. A few times.” More like a few hundred.

“I’m sorry you’ve been having problems with him. The good news is that he’ll be reporting to Andrew starting Monday, and my cousin won’t tolerate any foolishness. If Brett touches you again, just tell Andrew and he’ll take care of it.”

I nodded.

He gave me a small smile and I thought my legs would buckle. “You can go back to your desk now.”

I nodded again and slowly walked out of the office, thankful my legs would still hold me up. I left the door ajar on my way out.

Sour Grapes, a.k.a. Nancy, glared at me once more. I felt like sticking my tongue out at her, but refrained — barely.

The Demon’s Princess

A New Paranormal series will take flight this fall!

My upcoming YA (young adult), The Demon’s Princess, is the first in a four part series (under the author name Jessie Colter).  It will be released this October by Wild Horse Press in e-book format and in trade paperback format in November, available at a retailer near you.

About the Book –

Trapped in what she at first deems a nightmare, Lucinda Hayworth finds herself living day to day life in Atlanta, in a distant cousin’s body – in 1896. Deciding to blend in while she tries to find a way back to her time, she goes through life as Lucinda Caden… a wealthy debutante. At a ball, she meets Alexander, a prince visiting from a small unknown kingdom in the Atlantic. While Lucinda Caden may be from an influential family, she doesn’t feel worthy of Alex’s attention – especially knowing that she’s really just a modern girl of middle class status trapped in another time.

Alexander Astarot is precisely what his name implies — the son of a demon. Not just any demon, but the Prince of Demons. While he may be known as Prince Alexander Asterot, no one knows where his home truly lies. His father rules part of the underworld, but Alex rules the small island of Carpus, a gateway between earth and hell. His dark looks appeal to most young women, but there is only one who draws his attention — Lucinda. Or so she thinks…

When Lucinda discovers Alex is more than what he says, she still wants to be with him. Her parents, however, have other ideas. Shoving her in the direction of a long-term family friend, Jonathan, they forbid her from seeing the prince. In an attempt to escape the unwanted attentions of Jonathan Statton, she meets the Earl of Leamont, Benton Richards. While she will always love Alex, Lucinda must decide if she will wait for him forever, or if she will give herself a chance at happiness with someone else.

Circumstances will force Lucinda to choose – the demon prince who holds her heart, or the man who treats her like a princess.

Demons, werewolves, time travel, and a love triangle make this a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next!

Excerpt –

“Miss Caden, I’m afraid we haven’t been properly introduced, but I was hoping you might take a turn with me,” he nodded toward the dance floor.

“Oh, but the song…”

“Has already started, yes, but I find that I’m intrigued to see how well you dance.”

His soft, clipped tones sounded faintly English and I found I couldn’t tell him no. Perhaps dancing would take my mind off Alexander, distracting me from my morose thoughts for at least a little while. If nothing else, it would save me from being a wallflower and feeling sorry for myself.

Slipping my gloved hand into his, I allowed him to escort me out onto the floor.  As his hand settled at my waist and his other gently gripped my fingers, he twirled me in time with the music.

“I’m afraid I’m not a good dancer,” I admitted.

He smiled again, his eyes dancing with blue fire. “I beg to disagree.  You’re light on your feet and easy to lead.”

I smiled my thanks.  I was feeling a little better already.

“You mentioned we hadn’t been introduced and yet you know who I am.”

“I made it my business to know.  Anyone who has the attention of Alexander Asterot has my full attention as well.”

His words puzzled me.  Was that his only reason for dancing with me?  And how did he know Alexander?

“I’m afraid I don’t understand. Do you know the prince?”

“You could say that.  We met once long ago.”

I smiled up at him. “It couldn’t have been that long ago.  You may be older than I am, but I’d wager not by much.”

“In human years, I am twenty-three.”

I lifted a brow. “And in non-human years?”

He chuckled. “I’m much, much older.”

I sighed and gave myself up to the dance, not speaking again until it ended. It seemed I’d attracted yet another otherworldly male. When the music ended, he bowed over my hand and I curtsied.

“Thank you for the dance, Mr…”

“Benton.  Lord Benton Richards, the Earl of Leamont.”

“First a prince and now an earl,” I muttered, knowing I was being rude, yet unable to stop myself. My mouth was running away from me, a sure sign I was comfortable with him.  That probably should have worried me.

He laughed and escorted me off the dance floor. “You are certainly refreshing.  And if you know anything about Alexander, then you do well with the unusual.”

“Yes, I know who and what he is.”

Benton nodded. “I figured as much.  It’s obvious to see he cares about you, which means you’ve met his father.”

I stared at him in open-mouthed shock.  How did he know I’d met Alexander’s father? I hadn’t told a soul about my trip to hell, for fear they would think I was crazy and would haul me off to an asylum.

His lips quirked. “I’ve known Alexander for about fifty years.  Anytime he becomes interested in a potential bride, his father interferes.”

“Fifty years? Are you…”

He shook his head. “No, I’m something different.  Unlike Alexander I won’t live forever, just longer than most.”

“In your position, isn’t that difficult to hide?”

“Thankfully my father lived to the ripe old age of one hundred and fifty.  I didn’t become the earl until recently.”

I looked at my surroundings in surprise.  Somehow, he had managed to whisk me out of the ballroom, onto the balcony, and down into the garden. It was disconcerting to say the least.

“Why did you ask me to dance?” I asked bravely.

He boldly caressed my cheek. “Because you fascinate me, and not just because of Alexander, although that does add to the intrigue.  You’re beautiful, graceful, and refreshingly honest.”

I blushed. “I’m not beautiful,” I muttered. What was it with these men?  It’s not like the other debutantes were ugly.  In fact, several were far more beautiful than I was.

“Yes, you are.”

Firmly, he gripped the back of my head and lowered his lips to mine.  I stifled a gasp as his tongue swept into my mouth.  The audacity of him irked me, but he tasted spicy and sweet at the same time, and it would be dishonest to say his kisses did not move me.  I knew I shouldn’t be, and I knew that kissing three men in such a short time made me the worst sort of young lady.  Then again, Benton hadn’t exactly asked permission or given me any warning.  He was simply taking what he wanted.

Werewolves and Wolves Fiction and Facts by T.L. Mitchell

Over the years there have been many paranormal romances and thrillers written containing werewolves.  In past years, the term werewolves struck fear into the heart of anyone who heard the term.  However, lately werewolves are used in another form as friendly and loveable.  So how do we term the evil creatures from the good creatures? What is the difference?

In our discovery, let’s start with understanding some facts about wolves.  Wolves have been very badly misunderstood animals over the last decade.  They are important creatures to our eco system.  Many farmers and live stock owners disagree, claiming they are a nuisance and should be destroyed.  Truth is wolves are just as important to our world as the air we breathe.

Wolves are the largest member of the canine family, with a height from 26-32 inches.  They weight from 55-130 lbs and have a life span of approximately 7-8 years.   Some wolves have been known to live 10 years or more.  The diet of wolves consists of large hoofed mammals, such as dear, elk, moose and caribou.  I think you see why live stock owners would consider wolves a problem.  In Alaska, there are an estimated 7000 to 11,200 wolves and more than 5,000 in the lower 48 states.  In earlier times, there were estimated populations of up to 2 million wolves, where now there are only estimated 200,000 in 57 countries.

In the mid 1930s, wolves were once common creatures in North America and killed in most areas.  Today their range has been reduced to minimal areas throughout the US and Canada.

The behaviors of wolves are mainly pack-like. They live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals.  The packs include the mother and father, their pups and several other young wolves. The alpha female and male are the pack leaders that track and hunt prey.  These leaders choose den sites and establish the pack’s territory.  Wolves develop close relationships with one another and strong social bonds.  They demonstrate deep affection for their family and may even sacrifice themselves to protect the family unit.

Werewolves are considered wolf-shape shifters by many.  The name werewolf comes from the “wer” Old English term for man.  Man-wolf.  Legends around the world speak of men and women who could turn into wolves and back into human form.  In their animal form, the werewolves were bloodthirsty creatures that devoured humans.

The werewolf legends occur in all parts of the world.  Some scholars have suggested that these transformation legends are no more than echoes of ancient ceremonies where people wore animal skins.

An interesting note, European werewolf tales date back from ancient times.  A Greek king named Lycaon was turned into a wolf as punishment for serving human flesh to the gods.  The Greek word lukos(wolf) and anthropos(man) comes the term lycanthropy.

Now let’s discuss the difference between werewolves and Lycans.  We know they pretty much mean the same thing- a man (or woman) who can turn into a wolf.  Truthfully, they do not need the light of the full moon to change.  They can change at will. So where do we form the opinions of bad and good werewolves?  In Europe, the werewolf folklore is not just a simple myth or legend.  There was a time where werewolf legends were rich and varied in stories.  These stories were interesting as we begin to see tales about hero werewolves and a variety of species. So in fact, the werewolves in the older, darker days were considered blood-thirsty beasts.  Which is probably where we come up with the evil looking, more scary creatures in the movies.

Another folklore, I would not want to pass up is the one I use in my Dark of kNight Series.  My wolf- shape shifters are termed Lycans and they hunt evil werewolves. The background history on their characters is from the Native Indian’s folklore.  Some facts about where the Native Indians came up with their legends were said to be based on early settlers.  The early settlers brought with them their European beliefs and either retold old tales or created new ones.  This statement or fact, I disagree with.  The Native Indians are rich in their folklore, legends and beliefs.  It is my belief that the Native Indians already had stories about wolf spirits, eagle spirits and shape-shifting long before the European settlers arrived.

If we would take the true nature of a wolf as a Lycan, then we would see a family who has a strong relationship, loving and would die for one another.  The parents would be the forefront leaders of the pack and the children would learn from examples and discipline.  Does this sound like an evil creature? Not really.  This sounds more or less what we find in our paranormal romances or shape shifter novels.   I think any woman who reads a story about a strong male, determined and confident wouldn’t swoon in his arms…werewolf or not.

New Erotic Romance Author — Alexis Duvall

JCS: Today I have with me Alexis Duvall, a new erotic romance author.  She was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to stop in and chat for a moment.  Thank you for joining me today Alexis!

Alexis: Thank you for having me.  🙂

JCS: I understand that you’re new to erotic romance. How exactly did you get started with your writing career?

Alexis: Well, I’ve loved writing since I was a little girl. My mother still has some of the first short stories I wrote, and much to my horror she drags them out when she has company!  But I finally wrote a story I felt was worth publishing — All Tied Up.

It all started from a conversation I had with a friend who was frustrated over her latest boyfriend.  I won’t go into details to spare her any embarrassment, but it made me start thinking about all of the women out there who think they’re duds in bed.  Not because they are, but because they’ve chosen men who couldn’t care less whether or not they get any enjoyment out of sex… it’s all about them and not the women they are with.

JCS: Could you tell us a little bit about your upcoming release?

Alexis: Anna hasn’t had many serious relationships and none of them have been satisfying.  After a visit to the Crystal Palace, a place where all of your erotic desires can come true, she opens up a little more and meets an incredible man – David.  Their relationship has a really unconventional start, but as Anna begins to explore her sexuality more she becomes more open to a lasting relationship with David.

I have to warn you, it comes with an x-rating.  The sex scenes are detailed with light bondage, menage, and even some female/female sex scenes.  So it definitely isn’t a story for everyone.

JCS: It sounds like an interesting read!  When will it be available for purchase?

Alexis: It’s being released by Wild Horse Press on February 23, 2010.  But it’s available for pre-sale right now at All Romance Ebooks!

JSC: Would you feel comfortable sharing an excerpt with us?

Alexis: Absolutely!

Excerpt from All Tied Up, (c) 2009, Alexis Duvall

I’m not sure how I ended up in this predicament, and yet here I am – blindfolded and tied to a bed.  If only I hadn’t let Todd talk me into this!  As best friends went, he was the greatest… until now.

“You need to get out more, try new things,” he’d said.  “I bet you’ve never let anyone tie you down.”

Being completely naïve, I’d asked, “What do you mean?”

“I mean that you’ve never let anyone tie you to a bed, stripped naked, laying open to them.”

I’d blushed the color of a strawberry and gaped at him.  After a moment, he’d reached over and snapped my jaw shut.

“You’re catching flies,” he’d teased.

“You mean you want me to let someone tie up and have sex with me?” I’d asked in shock.

I mean sure, I’d heard of people doing that, but I’d certainly never tried it!  I wasn’t exactly sexually experienced.  I’d been with exactly three guys and all of them had been out the door the moment I’d given it up.  I was starting to think there was something wrong with me.

“Don’t be such a prude,” he’d said with a roll of his brown eyes.  “I think you’d actually enjoy it.”

“But… I don’t know anyone into that!”

He’d given me a wicked grin then. “You don’t have to.  There’s a place in town, the Crystal Palace. They specialize in just such things.”

“And how do you know of this place?”

He’d shrugged. “I heard about it at work.”

“Todd, you work in a bar.  Just because you hear about something at work, doesn’t mean you should have your best friend go out and try it.”

Against my better judgment, I’d allowed him to talk me into it.  So now I found myself in the Crystal Palace, devoid of clothing, blindfolded with a black satin cloth, and tied to the bed.

JCS: Wow, that was some excerpt!  Thanks for stopping in and sharing a little about yourself and All Tied Up!  I think I need to unsteam the windows now.  I can’t wait to see how that scene ends!

Alexis: Thank you for having me! It’s been a pleasure!

JCS: If you’d like to visit Alexis and keep up to date on her future releases, you can visit her at her website.

Affirmations… by guest author Linda Palmer

Time and again, I’ve noticed that when I begin a new book, I start receiving what I call “affirmations” that I’m doing the right thing. I actually have a list of affirmations I received while writing Storm Swept, my December ’09 release from Wild Horse Press. In that book, a character that is in the military is called up to help repair damage from a hurricane that I named Farrah. My affirmation? Right after I named my hurricane, I met a woman named Farrah at work. Coincidence? Maybe, but also an affirmation because I picked the name at random, and she was actually looking for another office. Another example is my decision to have my heroine enrolled in classes at a culinary institute. I immediately received two affirmations for that decision: I started seeing ads for a culinary institute while watching Ghost Hunter on the SyFy channel, and I heard one of my coworkers on the phone talking about her daughter actually enrolling in one. If I hadn’t already made that choice for my character, I’d think that hearing about the institute subconsciously made me choose it. But it just didn’t happen that way.

Yet another example is my choice of “mermaid” as a nickname the hero gives the heroine. After I wrote that, I immediately received three affirmations. First, the movie Mermaids starring Cher came on television. Second, there was a story on the news about a prosthetic mermaid tail created for a woman who didn’t have legs so she could swim. Third, a coworker randomly mentioned that her husband called her that.

In this same vein, right after I wrote a scene where a character is attacked by an evil spirit, but is rescued in the nick of time, I heard this lyric in a rock song “if not for me then you’d be dead.” Okay…I admit that’s a stretch, but it worked for me! And right after I decided that my heroine would be cooking breakfasts at her sister’s B&B, I got an e-mail from Kraft foods full of breakfast recipes and heard one of the characters on Big Bang Theory mention a B&B.

Receiving affirmations is not new to me. I remember my Silhouette Romance days and two particularly unusual incidences. While plotting a book about a hero whose job is to stop illegal immigration from Mexico into Texas, I realized I didn’t know what branch of the government controlled that. At the time, the internet wasn’t as huge, so the world wasn’t at my fingertips as it is now. Before I had a chance to research my question, I ran into a man who had the words Border Patrol on his cap. We were both giving blood at the time, which meant neither of us could go anywhere, so I was able to ask him a lot of questions. Another affirmation from that same book was my need for a stretch of lonely highway. I wanted my heroine to stop and change a flat tire for the hero, whose entire arm was in a cast. If there was a lot of traffic on the road, a man would already have done the job. I needed for my heroine to know that no one else would be able to help him. I found the answer to my question when the woman who sells me make-up stopped by my house and began talking about her recent vacation. Out of the blue, she said that she’d driven down a road for over an hour without seeing another car. I got out an atlas. She pointed out the road, which was, believe it or not, in Texas!

I have many more examples; they’re all lots of fun. And amazingly enough, my daughter, who recently began writing romance, has started getting them, too. She phones and e-mails me often, telling me her most recent.  Jessica Coulter Smith recently told me that she dreamed about the last book in her series and woke up knowing how to write it. Well, no dreams for me so far, but I do get affirmations straight from my personal muse. And they never fail to encourage and inspire me.

Jaguar Moon by Linda Palmer

I recently read Jaguar Moon by Linda Palmer and I must say I was drawn in from page one.  Livvie Merrick and Alex Sawyer were electrifying characters that leapt off the pages.  I was immediately immersed in the story, unable to pull away until I had read every word.  Livvie’s psychic talents cause her no end of trouble, yet Alex doesn’t seem to mind them despite the fact that he doesn’t believe in his own family curse.  However, when strange things begin to happen to him, he has no choice but to believe in the impossible.

Ms. Palmer has created a tale of paranormal delight with a hint of romance and a dash of suspense.  Curl up this Halloween with Jaguar Moon and allow Ms. Palmer to thrill you, chill you, and leave you begging for more.

ScribD … good or bad?

ScribD has several listings of books on their site. People can upload content, anywhere from a few pages to entire novels.  I’ve noticed a few authors using it to upload a chapter or two of their latest work.  I decided to see if this marketing technique would work and uploaded the first 2 chapters of Moonlight Hero, Moonlight Protector, and Magnolia Magick to the ScribD database.  We’ll see if sales increase any from the extra exposure.  I made sure the files were available in PDF only and included links to sites where the full novel could be purchased.

In addition, it seems that Authors and Publishers can use the ScribD store to sell their books directly on ScribD, less 20% commission the site charges.  So if sales are slow and you’re looking for a new site to try, you might check them out.
