PREORDER BLITZ: Fallen by Megan Slayer

Paranormal Romance

Date Published: April 4, 2025

He may be her salvation — if she’s willing to lose her wings all over
again.

Livia was cast out of heaven for the crime of falling in love with a human.
So what’s a fallen angel to do when she meets the man of her dreams? Falling
certainly has its perks.

Ty didn’t expect the angel at his party to be fallen or to have a murky
past. He also didn’t expect her to end up in his arms. Now he’s not about to
let the past stand in the way of their future.

EXCERPT

Parties are so lame.

Livia crossed her arms and stared at the people swaying before her. Hard
rock blasted from the speakers and rumbled the floor. She flicked a lock of
her hair over her shoulder. Dancing, laughing, and more than enough
drinking. She sighed. When was the last time she’d danced and laughed? Hell.
She couldn’t remember.

She wanted to dance, to wrap her arms around a torso thick with muscle, to
rest her head on a taut set of pecs and hear the heartbeat of a red-blooded
male like the one she’d drooled over in her history course. He’d mentioned
throwing an event. She wanted to see him, to see if he was actually like the
persona she’d created for him in her mind.

She snorted. Meeting a guy was probably not the best reason to attend a
costume party off campus, but who cared? It wasn’t like she had anyone
keeping tabs on her.

A young man dressed as a gladiator ambled toward her. “Hel-lo,
beautiful.” A wide grin curled his lips. His blond hair flopped over
his brow as he winked and pointed to her with his sloshing cup. “You
shouldn’t stand in the corner alone. Might get your wings dirty.”

Wings? She crooked one brow. She’d come as a Madonna look-alike, not an
angel. When she glanced over her shoulder, sure enough, her wings were there
— translucent, but there. Odd. “They’ll wash.” Her wings had been
ripped off over two thousand years prior. When – and how — the hell had
they come back?

“Yeah?” He wobbled on his feet. “Feathers work in a washing
machine?” He burped and his dark eyes widened. “I made a
funny.” He swayed again and splashed beer onto her bustier.

Livia gritted her teeth. This wasn’t the man she had in mind. Her dream man
didn’t slop alcohol on anyone — as far as she knew. Was the man in her mind
simply a figment of her imagination? An impossibility? Probably. She’d been
around far too long and seen more than her share of good men fall by the
wayside.

At least washing the beer stench out of her clothes wouldn’t be too
difficult.

“So, do ya wanna go make out?” He licked his lips. “I’m a
great kisser, and I bet you do wonders with those tits.”

“Go home, Brett.”

Livia’s blood turned to fire in her veins. The deep, gravelly voice set her
nerves on edge. If the drunken fool would just blow, she could at least see
the guy who’d come to her aid. If he was Tyler from history class, then even
better.

“Butt out, Ty.” Brett smacked his lips. “We were gonna have
sex. Me and those lovelies.” He reached out, hands hovering over her
chest. “Come to Brett. Again.”

Again? Who was this clown? “I wouldn’t have sex with you if you were
the last man alive,” Livia snapped and slapped his hands away.
“You spilled beer on me, and you’re an ass.”

“You’d know.” He swayed into her personal space and murmured in a
much less slurred tone, “I never forgot you.”

Never forgot her? What the hell was this guy drinking? She stared at the
drunken gladiator. Nothing about him really stood out. Still, at her age,
everything looked a little familiar. He couldn’t possibly be him. Isaiah was
dead. She’d seen him die over three centuries ago.

“Okay, time for Brett to go home. I don’t want shit on my carpet, and
she’s not interested.” The owner of the deep voice stepped out from
behind Livia and grabbed Brett’s arms. Her jaw dropped. This man was the
man. The man. Tyler Wilson embodied her innermost desires, and he was right
there protecting her.

Lean muscle filled out Ty’s tall frame. What would it feel like to have his
hands on her body? To run her fingers through his thick, dark hair and
listen to him murmur dirty things as they explored each other’s bodies —
what would it be like? A flash of bodies moving together and the look of
sheer lust in his blue eyes filled her mind. Oh, good God, it would be
almost heaven. Her pussy clenched and liquid heat coated her panties.

If he felt the heat, too. She couldn’t hope to be so lucky again. The
run-in with Brett or whoever he was had served as a cold reminder of what
she’d fallen for and couldn’t have.

Both men moved through the throng of people and disappeared. She should
stick around and find out if Ty was interested or if he was just keeping an
eye on his property. Not that she could blame him. Dumped beer could be
murder on a sound system. Not that her opinion mattered much. She was just a
partygoer like everyone else there. She folded her arms. Every moment she
waited, her conscience ate into her a little more. Waiting made her look
weak. It made her look needy. Was she needy?

Maybe. Damn.

No. She’d waited long enough. If he really wanted to talk to her, he’d have
come back. She turned and made her way to the apartment door and rummaged
through the pile of coats, looking for hers. Guys like Ty had women chasing
them in swarms. She’d been witness to that every time she walked out of the
Saunders Building. She wasn’t going to follow him around like a damned
puppy. Coat in hand, she turned toward the door. She plowed into a scantily
clad tiger giggling with a cowboy.

“Watch it,” the tiger snapped. “Nice wings, though. Costume
outlet, or did you get them online? I’ve been looking for some just like
them. I want a set. Michael, buy me some like that.”

Livia rolled her eyes. The truth was much too involved. Obscure always
worked. “I don’t remember.”

The cowboy tipped his hat. “Wanna join in?” He bobbed his brows,
and his gaze went straight to her chest. “We’re always looking for
more, and looking at those boobs, you’d be one hell of a third.”

“Michael! You said I was the only one,” she squealed. “No
more thirds.”

Michael shrugged. “Can’t blame me for asking.” He turned his
attention back to Livia. “You in?”

If they only knew what she’d done during her lifetime. “I’m good. No
thanks.” Livia ducked her head and stepped out into the hallway. She
didn’t look up until she hit the stairwell door.

Finally. Freedom.

Livia stopped on the landing and stared up at the sky through the round
stairwell window. Her heart ached. He was out there somewhere. The one man
to complete her. Was he still alive? Had she’d only imagined his death? Or
was she doomed to walk the Earth for the rest of eternity, alone?

Tears burned at the corners of her eyes. It was foolish to pine for the
assumed dead, especially when they’d parted so badly. Still, Isaiah held her
heart and her life in his hands, just as he’d had for the last couple
thousand years.

Footsteps thumped behind her, but she didn’t bother to look up.

“Angel?”

“Erin?”

Erin jumped at the sound of Will’s voice and turned away from the dumpster she had been staring at to look at him. “Will! You scared the crap out of me!”

She tried to surreptitiously wipe the tears that had wet both her cheeks, but she knew it was obvious she’d been crying.

She cleared her throat and straightened her back. “You didn’t have to come out here. And you didn’t have to listen to my grandmother if she was the one who told you to follow me. I’m fine.”

Even to Erin’s own ears the pain and self-pity in her voice was as clear as a bell. How pathetic she was, a grown woman—an attorney at a high-priced law firm— crying next to a dumpster over getting her feelings hurt by her thoughtless father. It was a wonder Will could even bear to look at her.

Almost in response to her thoughts, Will took a few steps closer, until he was standing just inches away. “Nobody told me to follow you. I was worried about you.”

“Well, I’m fine,” she snapped. “I’m not a child. Despite how my father might speak to me. I can handle myself. I don’t need you to feel sorry for me.”

Her voice cracked, betraying her emotions, and she looked up into Will’s eyes to gauge his reaction. All she saw was kindness and genuine compassion.

“I’m sorry.” She sighed, tears welling up once again. “You were being nice, and I’m being a jerk. You should go back and eat. I’ll come inside in a minute. I just needed to calm down. I’m fine now.”

Will reached up with both hands to touch the hair that fell on either side of her face. Erin’s breath caught in her chest as his warm fingers innocently brushed the tips of her ears.

“I like your hair down,” he said in a low voice. Then he touched her lips briefly with the pad of his index finger. “And I like your lipstick. But I have to admit I like it when you wear your hair up, too, and when you’re not wearing any lipstick at all.”

“Maybe you’re just easy to please,” she whispered, feeling on the verge of passing out.

“Maybe you’re just beautiful.”

Author Interview:

How long have you been writing, and how long did it take before your first book was published?

I’ve always wanted to be an author, since I first learned how to read and write.  I wrote stories through high school, took a break while I was in college for Engineering, then picked it back up again when I got a job as an engineer after college.  I got married and kept writing, then went to law school with my husband and still snuck in some time for writing once classes eased up in my third year. But with all that writing I had never written anything with the serious goal of publishing it. I always thought my writing was a fun hobby (hence Engineering and Law), something to do in my spare time. I stopped writing when I had kids, after law school, and it wasn’t until New Year’s 2015 that I decided I wasn’t going to wait until I retired to publish a book. I made a three-part resolution—I would (1) research how to write a publishable romance novel; (2) start and finish writing the story I had been thinking about for months before; and (3) try to publish the novel when I was done. It was one of the few New Year’s Resolutions in my life that I actually kept, and that first book I wrote was what would eventually become Timeless. So, that book took 10 years to publish. It’s not the first book I’ve published, though, because I put Timeless (originally titled Undeserving) aside and and wrote other books. Soothsayer was the first book I published, in 2020. So, from the time I decided I would publish a book to the time I actually did was around 5 1/2 years.

Do you have a routine you follow when you’re working on a book? A certain time of day when you write, or a snack you keep nearby?

I write at night, after I’ve caught up on my day job stuff and my family is in bed. I take a shower, brush my teeth, and get in bed with my laptop. Depending on what’s going on that day, sometimes I only have a few minutes of writing in me before my eyes start closing of their own volition. On those days, I’m happy if I only write one sentence. That’s why it usually takes me a year to write a new book!

What is the scariest thing you face as a writer? How do you handle it?

For me, the scariest thing is to read a “bad” review. Logically, I know that not everyone is going to relate to my characters or understand my message or enjoy my writing style. I know that, but I still want it not to be true. I want everyone who reads my books to go “Wow! What other books can I read by this author?” So, that moment when I open a review from a blogger or reader and can’t tell if it’s positive or negative yet, that’s terrifying for me. And if it’s negative, I have to tell myself it’s okay. I think of all the bad reviews famous authors have, how books I have read and loved also have had negative reviews, and that makes me feel a little better.

What do you think is the most important thing to remember when following your dreams?

Perseverance is the key to achieving any dream. The people who succeed, at anything, are the people who don’t give up, who keep moving forward. They talk to others who have succeeded and learn from them and keep working at it. This doesn’t mean you have to ignore practical things like having a paying job so you can have food to eat and a roof over your head. You have to do both. I firmly believe there is a time for everything, and success will come when it is meant to, if you keep at it.

What is the most challenging part of writing a book?

Writing romance means, by definition, things must work out in the end. There has to be a “happily ever after” or “happily for now.” Getting to that ending in a way that is genuine and believable, though, can be very challenging. I want the reader at the end of my book to have a moment of “oh, of course—it had to be like that, but I never saw it coming.” I don’t want them to think, “well, isn’t it convenient that the hero had an aunt we never knew about who died and left him all her money and now he can marry the heroine.” It’s hard to come up with a good ending, but it’s totally worth it.

When you’re writing, what comes first for you – the plot or the characters?

I typically start with the characters and a theme, like forgiveness or self-confidence, but I have key scenes in mind. I’ll know how I want to start and generally how I want to end, then I start writing. About two-thirds of the way through, I’ll know exactly how I want the rest of the book to unfold, and that’s when I’ll plot—just the last third of the book. It’s weird.

What part of the book is the most fun to write?

I love writing the last third of the book, when I have it all mapped out and I’ve figured out how everything is going to come together. All I have to do is keep following the light at the end of the tunnel, and then I get there, and it’s a very gratifying feeling.

What inspired the idea for your book?

Timeless is the first book I wrote after my mother passed away. I had been thinking about how we see things differently as children than we do as adults, and I was thinking about how debilitating it is to hold a grudge. It’s almost like it keeps you stagnant, the same, and you’re unable to grow or change or really live. And, because it is a romance, I was thinking about how two people can face those types of challenges together, and what they couldn’t figure out on their own, they could possibly discover in each other.

If you were to write a spin-off about a side character, who would you pick and why?

One of my favorite characters in Timeless is Blake Donovan, Erin’s good friend from law school who has a romantic crush on her for five minutes in the book. He’s a happy-go-lucky Casanova-type, but he finds his happily-ever-after, too. We just don’t see a lot of it in Timeless because it’s not his story. But maybe, if he’s a good boy, he’ll get his own book someday.

What’s the trickiest thing about writing characters of the opposite gender?

It’s hard for me, as a woman, to write a man. I don’t want my hero to sound like the heroine (you never want any of your characters to sound like any other character, same or opposite gender). So I often have to make myself see the scene through the eyes of a man I know (most often my husband). I’m lucky in that my husband is very unfiltered when he talks to me. I think I know pretty much everything he thinks about. I draw from that a lot when writing men in my books.

Welcome Readers! I am so excited that you are taking this journey with me into the
Shadowvere, where my characters live. I love to weave tales of darkness and
light, pushing my characters to the end of themselves. How will they react?
Some may fall into evil, spiraling into a never-ending vortex of darkness.
Others may walk the line between the realms of darkness and light. Only a few
will rise above the chaos. They are the defenders and heroes in the world of
shadows, but they, too, wrestle with the shadows surrounding them, trying to
lure them down dark alleyways and into the back rooms of iniquity.

My friends always ask me where my tales come from. I guess it comes from years of reading great tales from the likes of Tolkien, Lewis, and so many others. In reality, I
don’t have a clue. The stories somehow flow from the unruly characters that beg
to be written yet refuse to follow their storylines. Just the way I like it!

Past the shadows, you will find twist of romance between kings and outcasts, enemies to
lovers and everything in between.

As for me, I started my writing journey during quarantine and haven’t stopped writing since.
I am thankful for the writing community and their support and for my family and
friends. Most of all, I am blessed to have a husband who supports all of my
late-night shenanigans, wrestling with characters and pounding away at the
keyboard until the wee hours of the morning.

~ A million hugs! Thanks for joining the Shadowverse.

Excerpt

That damn itch she’d been having lately was back, and it was driving
her nuts. Rolling her shoulders, she watched two redheads staggering from
the bar’s exit and towards a dimly lit street.

Here we go again, She kept to the shadows as she followed after them.
Uneventfully, they made it to their car and drove off. She hoped the cops
were out tonight and those two were hauled in to sleep off their
drunk.

Turning back to the club, she waited and watched for the next two hours and
was glad nothing had happened. So far. But the night was still young.

“Can you smell it?”

She didn’t jump, but slowly looked over at Basil who appeared next to
her. She hated when he just appeared out of thin air, but she knew he loved
that entrance the best. “Your stink? Always.”

He didn’t sneer at her but slowly lifted his hand and lit the
cigarette between his fingers. “The blood of a human. Does it still
draw you in, make you hunger, make you want?”

“I’ve got a strong will.” Deliberately, she shifted away
from him. It wasn’t only the smoke that bothered her—and always
had—but his scent. It pissed her off that he could still make her
ache.

She waved the smoke away annoyingly and shifted just a bit farther away.
“Why are you skulking, Basil? Because if you’re following me, I
am going to so kick your ass.”

“I was in the neighborhood.”

She glared at him and growled her response. “If you’re here to
drink, let me warn you now that I won’t allow it.”

“Who am I supposed to drink from now that I no longer am nourished by
your blood?”

She chose not to answer that. “Why does it seem that you’re
always around, lurking in the dark, around places that aren’t your
usual hangouts? Unless….there’s a reason?” The thought
stabbed into her, and though she didn’t want to believe it, she had to
ask. “Are you trying to take more females of your own? Are you the one
abducting young girls?”

With one quick and easy flick, he tossed the cigarette into the darkness.
The red tip glowed as it flew through the air before landing on the gravel
to bounce and spit out a cloud of red sparkling fireworks. “I will not
even dignify that with an answer.”

“It’s so obvious, now that I think about it. I was young when
you took me, made me yours. Is that what you’re doing, Basil, making
another mate?”

His icy blue eyes narrowed dangerously as he stepped closer. “I have
a mate and to think you would even have such a thought sickens
me.”

“You don’t have me, Basil.” Her voice grew dangerous.
“If I’m so wrong, then do explain to me why you’re always
out in the darkness, skulking near all these young girls?”

“The very same reason you are, my dear.” He ran a finger along
her face, making her scowl.

She snorted, stepping away from him before he decided to do something
stupid, like kiss her. “Please, I hardly think you’re out here
looking to find the person or persons responsible for taking four innocent
girls.”

Leaning against the building behind them, Basil looked off into the
direction of the bar and the people waiting in line to be allowed inside.
“You think so little of me and that’s a shame. But I suppose
I’ve done it to myself. Yes, Trinity, I am looking to find out who
took those young girls, as you are. And why you might ask?” He shifted
towards her, sliding in nice and close and making her pulse speed up. He
laid his fingers on her cheek, then slowly slid them along her face.
“Because I have a feeling I am connected to the reason they’ve
been taken.”

She had all but a moment to open her mouth to respond when he closed it
with a mind numbing kiss, then pulling away, turned into a dog and scampered
away.

Now what the hell did he mean by that?

Up against the wire to produce a piece of hard-hitting journalism to solidify her career and no other ideas, she decides it’s time to come out of hiding and embrace what she truly is – a Valkyrie.

She dusts off her wings and goes undercover at Robert Sinclair’s Reformation Academy, the prison alternative that boasts the ability to turn supernaturals into simplynaturals, removing what makes them different and allowing them to better assimilate into society.

But there is something fishy about a vampire who can now be a phlebotomist and a necromancer who works as a mortician. Stella is determined to discover what is going on behind those golden gates and expose the Academy to the realm.

What she didn’t expect to find at the Academy were starving vampires who wanted to feed from her feet, a shy cyclops suitemate, or a reaper who is sunshine personified. Even one of her simplynatural professors draws her attention in a way she can’t explain. Stella’s plan didn’t include making friends, but now that she has, she’s dead set on doing whatever it takes to keep them safe.

Robert Sinclair’s Reformation Academy has a dark secret, and it’s up to Stella to uncover it before all of them are reformed.

Reformed is the first book in a planned four book why choose paranormal romance series, meaning Stella will not have to choose between her love interests. This slow-burn MFMMM book is intended for adult audiences and contains explicit content.

“Pierre Lenoir accused Moira of stealing his notes and discovering the tombs using his research, which put her discovery in a long legal battle. He demanded the Egyptian courts turn over the discovery to his team, saying that a lone woman with a meager team of village riffraff could not have discovered such riches.” He took a deep breath. “Tossing the situation into further turmoil, Miss White mysteriously disappeared shortly after the filing. The case remains unsolved, but they credited this finding to her alone.”

“Moira Joanna White. She sure is pretty. Too bad she’s dead.”

Dominic turned toward the exit as Evie spoke. “Wanna see her in real life?”

He stopped and turned to Evie. “What?”

Evie looked at Dominic, then at the Eye of Ra. Ewan stepped toward his sister as Dominic shot his hand out to stop him.

Ewan grabbed her shoulder. “Evie, don’t.” Evie raised her hands. His ears buzzed, and the room filled with an electrified energy. He’d felt something like this on another assignment where he flew a unique craft. The “out of this world” one he couldn’t tell anyone about. The overcharged sensation overwhelmed Dominic in the same way. Evie shifted her hands, and the pupil of the Eye of Ra turned a little then rotated. It spun faster and faster, swirling into a gray mass. As the gray of the center faded, a picture appeared as he stared and the image moved.

Dominic stood transfixed. Before him was a movie of Moira White bent over a sarcophagus, cleaning it with a large brush. Her thick auburn hair caught the torchlight as dust particles flickered around her head. So, it was red. She turned as if someone had called her, making Dominic’s breath escape in a whoosh. Before him was a full-color live version of the photo. The stunning beauty from the past, alive before his eyes.

As she gave him a full smile, he moved forward, tilting his head. He returned the grin, completing the connection. The picture rotated off-center, and the air traveled around him. The ringing came back to his ears, louder.

A kid’s gasp came from behind as Ewan screamed, “Evie, what’s wrong? What’s happening?”

Dominic turned. Ewan held Evie’s shoulders as she gasped for air and held her hands out to the eye. The wind picked up and swirled around them as the picture inside the eye’s pupil rotated faster.

Evie yelled over the wind, “I can’t control it, Ewan! It’s got a hold of me! I can’t stop it!” The churning wind dragged Evie toward the eye as Ewan grasped her shoulders, trying to push her away. A gust of wind pressed the twins, and they slid fast toward Dominic. When they slammed into him, his reflexes took over, and he grabbed them. He held both teenagers in his arms, trying to push them away from the eye.

Dominic searched for Doug and Kat and found they’d taken cover behind the chariot. Thank God he’s got only two to worry over.

He yelled over the wind, “Doug, keep Kat safe. Stay there.”

Ewan cried out, “Evie, ye have to stop it! Close yer eyes! Shut it off!”

Tears streamed down Evie’s face. “I can’t. I’m frozen!” This can’t be! The eye dragged them toward it. The energized force pulled as Dominic tried to push away. Whatever this was, Dominic feared it was not good.

Dominic yelled over the wind, “Hold on, kids. I’ve got you!” He gathered them both in his arms as he fought to keep them from the eye. The wind hit them with a forceful blow, and all three flew into the Eye of Ra.

BOOK BLITZ & GIVEAWAY: Bloody is the Night by Robin Jeffrey

Bloody is the Night
Robin Jeffrey
(The Night, #2)
Publication date: November 12th 2024
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Unbeknownst to humans, the werewolves of the world live in tight knit gangs, or “dens”, for protection from outsiders – and each other. Every major metropolis has one; to belong to a den is to have a family for eternity. Shaye Cassidy, an unhoused human woman scraping by on the streets of Los Angeles, hasn’t had anything close to a family in over ten years. Shaye left her home under a cloud to chase the dream of a new start, a dream that quickly turned into a nightmare; a nightmare that grows even more twisted when Shaye witnesses a werewolf killing a fellow unhoused man.

Andy Vasquez is a top member of Sangre Sagrada, second only to the den leader herself. When she tasks him with tracking down a werewolf gone rogue, someone who is killing humans for sport and risking the exposure of their world, Andy dedicates all his resources to the task. He couldn’t have predicted that the key to uncovering the identity of the rogue wolf would be a human woman, any more than he could have predicted that he would fall in love with her.

Now, Andy must protect Shaye not just from the rogue wolf, but also from those within his den who wish she would disappear. Shaye has her own secrets, however, and in the city of angels, everyone has a devilish side.

EXCERPT:

I faced forward and froze.

Sitting on the stool across the table was the slim man from the library. He looked me over with an unimpressed glaze to his eyes, leaning against the table, his breathing somewhat labored.

“Shaye Cassidy?” he said casually, as if we had arranged to meet here on a blind date.

I pushed away from the table, my eyes widening. “Shit–!”

Two massive hands clamped onto my shoulders. I tried to twist around, to twist out of their grip, but I might as well have been trying to squirm out of handcuffs. “Stay awhile,” said the silver-haired man behind me, pressing me down into the stool, squeezing hard, but not hard enough to be painful.

Heart in my throat, pounding against my skin like it was trying to escape, I watched as the dark-haired man slid himself on top of the plush green seat across from me, reaching forward and picking up a few pieces of hard-shelled candy out of the bowl as he settled himself. “How did you even get into a place like this?” he asked, an amused quirk to the corner of his mouth that set me on edge.

Even in the midst of the chaotic bar, his voice was deep, cool, and clear, like water from a mountain river. I watched as he threw the candy into his mouth piece by piece, and he returned my stare, his brows lifting over his dark eyes.

My tongue darted out to wet my suddenly dry lips. I cleared my throat. “Are you going to hurt me?”

His lips twitched up into a lightning strike smile that was gone almost as soon as it appeared. “No.” Tongue probing the inside of his cheek, he leaned forward across the table, so he didn’t have to shout. “Are you going to answer my question?”

His calmness grated on my raw nerves. I rolled my eyes and gestured towards the back of the club, past the dance floor. “Fire door alarm around the back is busted. Has been for almost a year.” As I shifted my weight on my seat, the man’s grip on my shoulders remained steady and firm. I grimaced at the pressure. “I noticed it when they hired me for a day to wash some dishes.”

The man looked in the direction I indicated and gave a harrumph, his shoulders rising and falling. He returned his attention to me, nodding. “Clever.”

Frowning, I gripped the edge of the table tightly. “I’m homeless, not blind.” I looked around. No one seemed to notice that I was under duress. If I started screaming, what would happen? What would anyone do? I decided not to risk it, sighing and staring at the man across from me instead. “I’m not stupid either. You’re Andy Vazquez, right?”

His calm facade cracked, if only slightly. This time he actually looked impressed, his eyes widening slightly, faint surprise clear in the opening of his mouth. “Ah, yeah.”

“What do you want?” I demanded.

“I thought you said you weren’t stupid.” He smiled, his eyes narrowing. “What would someone like me want with someone like you?”

“I don’t know,” I answered with unusual honesty, throwing one hand into the air. “I don’t even know who you are; not really. Just that you’re looking for me. You and the LAPD.” Looking him over more closely, a thought occurred to me. “Is that it? Are you a cop? Like a detective or something?”

As soon as the question was out of my mouth, I knew the answer was no. Getting a closer look at him, he couldn’t have been dressed less like a police officer. A part of my brain I had not used in a long time recognized the deceptively plain white dress shirt he was wearing as Louis Vuitton, meaning it cost somewhere close to a thousand dollars. The pants they were tucked into? Armani, over a thousand. The jacket? Even at this distance, I could tell: a single-breasted affair in virgin wool and silk – two thousand at least.

But it wasn’t just the clothes. It was the way he wore them.

Like they were strictly temporary.

“You have got to leave,” I said, entering the area behind the huge boiler that heated the entire manor. I heard his laughter, but wasn’t sure if it was in my head. “You can’t stay here any longer. Not after attacking a living being. I’m giving you fair warning because I don’t like to force the spirit world.”

Just then, he materialized in front of me. His body not quite corporeal, as I assumed he’d be able to make it if he still had his full power.

He opened his mouth to say something, then looked over my shoulder. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck prickle and my stomach fall as I realized Evan must’ve come back downstairs and followed me into the basement.

I threw up a quick shield, but not fast enough to stop the attack. The ghost shattered the shield as he collided with it, throwing Evan back against the boiler.

I rushed forward, grabbing him under the arm, pulling him up, and rushing him toward the stairs. “Go, now!” I demanded, and turned around just as the entity was reforming.

Leave here!” it bellowed, and this time I knew I was hearing him, and not just in my head.

I didn’t try to confront him again, not when he was so angry. Instead, I cast a bubble around myself and forced it toward him hoping that’d give me enough time to escape.

I made it to the top of the stairs when I felt sharp nails swipe the back of my shoulder. “Shit,” I said, and slammed the door behind me. I secured the boundaries I’d set when I first arrived, effectively sealing the nasty thing in the basement for now. Not that they would last long. He was still too damned powerful.

After
years of writing romance under the pen name Blake Allwood, I decided
to pursue my other genre passion, fantasy and science fiction. Adam
J. Ridley is the reality of that pursuit.

My husband of 28 years and I
have had an adventurous life. We’ve had many businesses, we’ve
raised over twelve foster children, two of which we adopted, and had
at least two professional careers.

To say we are people who seek
experiences is an understatement.

As I’ve grown older, my
passions seem to be better reflected in my imagination. Fantasy,
urban fantasy, and science fiction all allow me to escape into
worlds that transcend life. I’ve always been a major lover of
fantasy writing and started reading it at a rather young age.

My husband and I travel
full-time now in our RV (caravan for those not in the United States.)
We’ve been doing this since 2017 and y’all, we love it.

Please join me on Facebook, and
other social media sites. I work hard to be easily accessible to my
readers, cause you all are the reason for all the lovely work!
