EXCERPT

The Prime Magus climbed another set of stairs to the battlement. Several guards of the Central Keep gave him a wide birth. In the distance, he could see the Mandarian stretch of mountains and forested valley floor. Pine-crowned hills concealed the entire glacial mountains, and a low-lit blue radiated from the moon on a cloudless night. The expanse of stars and night comforted him. Soon, Alluria would rival the power of the stars, and only one could pose a threat. The screams echoed in the halls, and the Prime Magus drew fury from that pain, but also power. He fixated on Kalero, the hapless scholar already a folk hero of the Eastern Gate. His victory was soon becoming legend, and it made the Dims even more emboldened against the Crown. Tomorrow, he would order their death and publicly display the minstrels that composed those folk songs, and send the Allurian orchestra to play a beautiful concert in the same square underneath their rotting corpses.

The glare of the light lessened and, blinking quickly, she peered to find a doorway before her. It was made of light that crackled and pulsed like electricity. Through it Erica could see London, but a different London, one with horses and carriages upon its cobbled streets and men and women walking about in smart jackets and top hats, long dresses and warm shawls: the crack that had opened the doorway started at her footfall. Taking her foot away, the light crackled anew. She walked slowly around the side of the monument to look at the street behind it, but there were no horses or carriages or smartly dressed people, just the deserted Embankment. She walked back round to the front of the monument where the doorway persisted to flicker brightly.

Recalling herself, she spun round. “Oh, no…”

Michael was standing stock-still and his eyes were no longer sad but wide with shock.

Magic, monsters, and a match made in heaven… maybe.

Oh, and a somewhat mute aardvark.

Hi. I’m Jayne. Yeah, I know, plain human Jayne. But that’s not the story of my life. This book is. It all started with a visit from the Book Fairy. Yeah, the all-powerful Book Fairy. It’s unfortunate we haven’t been on good terms. It’s even more unfortunate that when she finally deigns to visit me, it’s for murder. I mean, a murder. Damn articles, they really do make a difference.

Add in my fantasy lover, a vampire Prince who might just hate me, and things surely can’t get worse, right?

Warning: This is an inverse harem scene type of book. If you don’t like group ceiling sex, this book might not be for you.

Actual Note: Mild profanity. This is a slow burn romance with just the right amount of spiciness to feel comfortable reading on public transit, so long as you’re prepared to laugh out loud.

Excerpt

“That doesn’t even make any sense. They’re in the woods,” a feminine voice right beside my ear notes.

“AHH!” I jump up inelegantly and spin towards her, knocking my papers everywhere. A gorgeous blonde wearing dove-gray riding leathers tailored to her perfect curves stands in my living area looking at me with disdain.

“And don’t you mean a ‘ditch’, not a ‘gully’? Isn’t a gully kind of big?”

I stare in shock at the intruder and at the hours of work strewn across the floor. The ink pot has made a huge blot on the pile of blank paper, but at least it didn’t tip all the way over or spill on my actual writing.

Damn, I’m going to have to pay for new paper. And more ink. Well, eating is overrated anyway.

Her wings flick in agitation, maybe because I’m no longer staring at her and she’s used to being the center of attention. Or maybe because I’ve moved on from her sudden appearance. You learn to adapt in Mythia. Our world is a bit weird compared to the Four Kingdoms, or even Everland, but I love it here.

Did I mention she has wings?

She looks at the chaos of papers around me, not a single hair moving in her perfectly coiffed hair as she scans my work area.

“It wasn’t that good anyway. C’mon, you know it, Jayne. It was headed to the ‘refuse’ pile. I just helped it get there faster.”

I collapse into my chair and cover my face with my hands. The preternaturally beautiful stranger is right. My writing sucks. I’m broken. Hmm, maybe in more ways than one. Maybe the stress of trying to churn out a best-seller has finally done me in? I peek between my fingers. Nope. She’s real and still there.

“What do you want? Why are you here?” I shake my head, attempting to get my thoughts straight. “Who are you?”

She daintily plucks a paper off my table, lets it flutter to the floor, and perches a hip against the cleared space.

“Book Fairy. I’ve read your stuff. I’m actually a fan. But that was crap. Anyway, you’ve got more important things to do.”

The. Book. Fairy. In my one-room attic apartment. Holy crawfish on a gilded stick! My luck has finally turned around.

“Yes! You’re right; it was crap. I need help. Here, sit.” I jump up for the second time and thrust the chair towards her. She flinches, sliding off the corner of the desk and releasing a poof of sparkles.

“Please do not touch me,” she says haughtily. “Or have anything touch me.” She shivers delicately, her wings flitting in agitation again. “I’d really prefer not to spend any more time in this …habitation?” She turns her nose up in contempt and continues, “Get whatever you need and let’s go.”

I never imagined this was how the Book Fairy does her thing, and I’ve imagined it plenty of times. What human doesn’t? My family has been here in Mythia for generations, some even with Talent for writing, but no one has ever made it into the Nobles ’Circle. We’re lucky that writing’s such a dependable profession, at least. Vampires and werewolves love their stories.

My mom specialized in horror since that was always a winner with the supernatural crowd, and Papa took care of everything else. I’d honed my skill under her tutelage after I finished my years at school, finding my niche in murder mysteries. We’ve always just made enough to live comfortably, entertaining the werewolves and vampires with our novels. At least, that was until my parents died.

Mom was researching a monster for her latest story, and she wandered into the Black Forest, never to come out again. Papa went after her; he had to. I understood at the time, but hindsight colors it all in stark contrast and cruel, obvious tones. The last few years have been a blur; losing our family cottage at the border of the woods, finding a cheap apartment on the outskirts of the Capitol, churning out manuscript after manuscript to stay one step ahead of the creditors.

So, yeah, I’ve spent a lot of time fantasizing about the one being that could make my dreams come true. She’d activate my Muse into overdrive and Gift me with Articulation, Narration, World Building and Creativity, Poetry and Prose, Influence, Captivation, and who knows what else. It’s not common knowledge what the Book Fairy can do, but I imagine all of her powers being bestowed on me. My good-for-nothing distant relatives would beg for my forgiveness for their snubs, my schoolmates would regret teasing me for not having Talent, and I would read to and write for the Royal family. Maybe even live in the Castle. I’ve fantasized about one of the princes noticing me, even one day marrying me. Hey, it’s a well-worn fantasy, and I got all the mileage out of it that I could. And it all starts with the Book Fairy.

I cannot believe she’s here now, but I’m not one to look an octacorn in the mouth. I don’t even question how she illegally transported into my apartment. Maybe it’s Book Fairy perks.

“Um, sure, yeah.” I grab my leather book-bag from the floor and fiddle with the strap, ready to go in a rush if that’s what it takes. “What is it I’ll need again?” I look around, grabbing a few items.

“Demons, what do I know about sleuthing? It’s your murder.”

MY REVIEW:

3 stars

Magic, vampires, pun-tastic humor, and romance… it made for an interesting mix.

I loved The Book Fairy and a land full of paranormal creatures, fairies, and humans. There were plenty of humorous spots throughout the book. Jayne is an interesting character, even for a “plain” human. Her “bestie” Rill nearly gave me a headache, with her overly hyper personality and non-stop talking, which left me feeling sorry for Jayne at times.

The first third of the story was a bit difficult to navigate. It felt like information was constantly thrown at me with such speed I didn’t have time to digest it before more was thrown my way. The world building felt rushed overall with a lot of “tell” instead of showing us this new, fascinating world.

The book started out with more of a paranormal mystery feel. With so much focus on the murder, it was more than a little surprising when it was quickly explained away and the romance between Jayne and Liam took center stage.

If the author were to split this into two books, expanding more on the initial world building (without the info dump) and focusing on the murder mystery in the first volume, I think it would greatly help the overall flow. It would open up the opportunity to show us more about the budding relationship between Jayne and Liam in the second part.

Too much was crammed into far too few pages, but I did enjoy the characters, and the story intrigued me once I became more acclimated. The book has a lot of potential, but it just didn’t quite wow me.

*Disclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Okay.  I’m a mom of three young children.  And I spend way too much time in the fantasy world in my head.  But, hey, in this world I’m still supernatural.  I channel the powers of my insomnia for good.  I’m impervious to kid whining and insults (well, mostly).  I have a second sense for cereal disasters and broken toy catastrophes.  They call me Mom, which is code for You’re-Awesome-We-Love-You or Stop-Writing-On-Your-Computer-and-Play-With-Me.  I’m not sure which.  My kryptonite is my pet peeves:  water running down my elbows, food stains on papers, and losing the little plastic tethers when you remove the tags off new clothes.

So, yeah, that’s me.  Your average superhero mom.  Oh, and I’ve got three eyes (one in the back of my head).

“This is storytelling at its best.” – WENDY HIGGINS, NYTimes bestselling author of Sweet Evil

NO REST FOR THE WICKED . . . OR THE CURSED.

SLATE
I didn’t mean to steal the Bloodstone from the De Morel’s crypt.

Scratch that, I did mean to steal it.

Until I realized it was a curse-magnet that only comes off if I, along with a jolly trio, successfully defeat four curses.

If any of us fail, I’m dead.

I’ve never been a glass half-empty sort of person, but my glass looks in dire need of a refill right about now.

The only highlight of this wicked treasure hunt: feisty, entitled Cadence de Morel.

CADENCE
I was raised on tales of magic, in a small town reputed to be the birthplace of French witchcraft.

Did I believe all the stories I heard? Absolutely not. I mean, if magic existed, Maman wouldn’t have died, and Papa wouldn’t be stuck in a wheelchair, right?

Wrong.

The night Slate Ardoin waltzes into my life, wearing a ring he stole from my mother’s grave, I call him a monster.

But then I meet real ones, and Slate, well . . . he becomes something else to me.

Something frustrating to live with but impossible to live without.

Something I will fight for, no matter the cost.

*Warning: profuse cursing (and not just the magical kind).
*Intended for readers 16 and up.

I’m torn between the desire to strangle him and kiss him. “We should go. Adrien’s waiting.”

“He’s fine.” He finally stops rubbing his chest. “He can wait.” He lays his hand on my jaw, tilts it up.

My heartbeats are so loud and close together that they’re probably making all six layers of my clothing vibrate.

The tip of his nose touches the tip of mine, and his breath warms my parted lips. The only boy I’ve ever kissed is Romain, and those kisses were always friendly and sweet. I don’t think kissing Slate will be friendly or sweet. I lick my lips in anticipation.

“Can’t wait for our date.” He pulls back, releases my head but finds my hand in the folds of his coat, and tows me downstairs.

Yep. I’m going to strangle him.

Probably while kissing him.

About the Authors

USA TODAY bestselling author Olivia Wildenstein grew up in New York City, the daughter of a French father with a great sense of humor, and a Swedish mother whom she speaks to at least three times a day. She chose Brown University to complete her undergraduate studies and earned a bachelor’s in comparative literature. After designing jewelry for a few years, Wildenstein traded in her tools for a laptop computer and a very comfortable chair. This line of work made more sense, considering her college degree.

Katie Hayoz grew up in Racine, Wisconsin where she acquired an irreversible nasal twang and an addiction for books with a slightly dark edge. She now lives in Geneva, Switzerland with her husband, two daughters, and a very fuzzy cat. She has been an avid reader of YA fiction for years. While she has a penchant for the paranormal, she devours a range of books – along with popcorn and black licorice. She consumes all three in large quantities. Luckily, the books don’t stay on her hips.

Chloe skidded to a halt, senses on high alert. It would not be prudent to burst in upon an unknown werewolf and his kill. Lifting her muzzle, she searched the breeze for any more information.

Male. The stranger was male, and a mature one. He must have plunged into the stream to wash the scent of blood off his fur, as the aroma was rapidly waning.

That was good. It meant she wasn’t going to face a wolf guarding his dinner. More likely, one sated by a good meal. She moved ahead cautiously though, as silently as possible. This was not her territory, not her pack.

She stopped at the edge of the brush, where it thinned out at the edge of the stream. She could still smell the stranger, but he was nowhere in sight. She shifted her position, hoping to catch a glimpse before she exposed herself.

The safest thing to do would be to leave quietly before he detected her. It was unlikely that a male would attack her, but this one was an unknown entity.

She knew her pack mates, and especially her older brother Garret, would be horrified if they knew she was taking a risk like this. The entire pack had been unhappy when she’d voiced her intention to take the six-week cooking course at a college so far from home. She was amazed they hadn’t insisted on her taking a bodyguard with her.

Actually, she suspected her brother would have but Jack, the Alpha, would have been smart enough to realize she would not take kindly to being treated like an irresponsible pup.

She’d been restless and irritable for months before she’d left. She needed to get away from everyone and everything, needed time to decide what she wanted to do with her life. She’d recently purchased the coffee shop  where she’d been working for the past few years, and the thought of turning it into a high-end lunch bar and bakery was both exciting and terrifying. She’d worked there since high school, and the owner had been willing to hold the mortgage and help with the transition.

She took a cautious step out into the open, still searching the wind for the strange werewolf. Maybe he’d left just before she arrived.

She saw a blur of movement from the corner of her eye just before the stranger bowled her over with a shoulder check that would have done credit to an NFL linebacker. The attack was so fast, so unexpected, it was all she could do to roll with the hit and avoid any major damage. Within seconds she found herself flat on her back staring up into eyes as black as midnight, and a muzzle full of impressive white teeth.

Damn.

And as fast as he’d attacked, he backed off, woofing softly as if in apology. Chloe rolled over slowly, keeping a wary eye on the stranger.

His eyes weren’t the only thing black. His fur was so dark, it had an almost blue hue to it in the soft moonlight, shimmering as he moved. Lowering his head, he shifted another step back. Under different circumstances, she might consider him attractive. Hot, even.

She got to her feet, keeping the strange wolf in her sight. He was big, bigger even than her brother Garret, and that was saying something. Garret was the biggest wolf in the Northern Rockies Pack.

Shaking herself off, she circled warily around the male. Swimming was definitely off now, and she’d been looking forward to the invigorating feel of cold water on her fur. That pissed her off enough to growl softly at the stranger.

Apparently, having a small young female growl at him did not intimidate him at all. Sitting back on his haunches, he cocked his head to the side and stared at her as if she confused him.

She couldn’t imagine what he found confusing. He’d attacked her. Laid her out flat on the ground and loomed over her with his teeth showing. Not exactly a polite introduction. He should consider himself lucky that all she did was growl at him.

Of course she was angry and she had every right to be. She deserved, if not his respect then at least a perfunctory show of deference due a female. He was male. She was female. There were unwritten codes, damn it.

Angling her body slightly, she managed to follow the river upstream without taking her eyes off of the stranger until she rounded the first bend. For his part, the male just sat there watching her get farther and farther away. Perversely, that also annoyed her. Why didn’t he try to follow her? Wasn’t she interesting enough to pique his interest?

He didn’t have a bond-mate, although she wasn’t sure how she knew that. She just did. Maybe it was something to do with his scent, a strongly male musk that sent shivers of lust down her spine, something that had never happened to her before. Mostly, she’d felt a sense of challenge, and the urge to try out her feminine wiles and enjoy the reactions they provoked.

She slowed, cocking her head to listen for any sounds of pursuit. Perhaps the stranger was just being respectful. Sure enough, she heard the rustling of dry leaves, something any self-respecting werewolf could avoid unless they wanted their prey to know they were being stalked.

She repressed the urge to smile. Stalked. Not exactly. More like pursued, which was as it should be. Turning her attention to the path ahead, she broke into a ground covering lope, following the stream.

Maybe if he were lucky, she’d let the stranger catch up. It had been a long time since she’d considered indulging the carnal side of her nature, and she’d never actually followed through on those urges. Work. School. Future plans. They all got in the way of having a social life.  Maybe it was time to change that.

She stretched out to her full length, enjoying the feel of her muscles bunching and relaxing as she ran. Picking up her pace, she kept an eye out for a likely place to cross the river. Normally she swam, but that would slow her down and she wasn’t ready to confront the male yet. Let him work for it.

As she rounded an outcropping of rock, she spied a sandbar stretching more than halfway across to the far bank. Perfect! Without slowing down, she jumped from the bank and landed on the edge of the sand. She paused to look back over her shoulder. Would the male be smart enough to realize she’d changed course? She sure hoped so. If she lingered long enough for him to see her, he’d realize he was being played. He might even give up the chase, and that definitely didn’t fit into her plan.

Bounding up the far bank, she took a sharp right turn, following a well-worn trail that led down to the water. She could smell the dozens of small mammals who trod this way to get to the water. On impulse, she dropped to her belly and crawled along the ground for several feet, laying her scent firmly over top of all the others. If the strange male managed to follow her this far, he’d have no doubt that he was on the right trail.

She stood up and shook the dirt and dust from her coat. She’d barely moved more than a few yards down the trail when something barreled into her side, knocking her to the ground.

She blinked.

Not something, someone. The strange male.

He’d outmaneuvered her. She felt a grudging respect. He’d figured out her game and beat her to the punch line. Of course, she didn’t plan on letting him win quite that easily. Twisting sideways, she made a move to get to her feet.

He pounced on her, his superior weight pinning her to the ground.

She bared her teeth and growled.

He lowered his head and nuzzled her neck.

She glared at him, all of her teeth exposed.

He reacted by licking her muzzle. Seriously, what was a girl to do? The guy’s charm was irresistible. She let her lips lower over her teeth and whined softly.

King of the Boroughs by Penny Dee (Contemporary Arranged Marriage Mafia Romance)

Hi I’m Penny Dee! I’ve written stories for as long as I can remember. I wrote my first book when I was five. It was called The Goodies and it was about a drive to the shops to get milk. It was amazing. It was also brilliantly illustrated in orange felt tip pen because I was all about the awesomeness when I was five years old.

Skip forward a few decades… and I write romance, erotic romance and romantic suspense. And MC romance. And rockstar romance. And contemporary romance. Hell, if they’re romancing then I’m writing it. I feel really fortunate because I get to meet interesting characters every single day—fictional characters who shock the hell out of me! I never know where their story is going until they lead me there. They’re in charge. They can be bossy and demanding. Sometimes a little impatient and frustrating. And let me tell you, they don’t understand the concept of quiet time.

No. I am not crazy.

When you write fiction, you share your grey matter with a lot of characters. Characters who show up unannounced and demand to be put to paper.

Fictional characters aside, I also like to hear from real humans so don’t be shy, drop me a line and say hi.

I promise you. I am not crazy.

The Trouble With Love by Kat T. Masen (Contemporary Billionaire Romance)

Kat T. Masen. I’m obsessed with the ’80s — hands down THE best years of my life. Granted, I was in the prime of my life, not reaching the double digits yet. Life was nothing but great music, neon-colored tights, and roller-skates that made an appearance at the roller arena each week.

Then I grew up…

Ahh, the ’90s. I’m admitting right here that I’m a 90210 fanatic. The skates were hung up, and dating boys became the norm.

Also, then l began to adult…

Marriage, four boys, and what’s that…I kind of became an author. I combined my love of reading, ’80s bands, and the swoony men on 90210 to bring you sexy.humorous.smut.

But, then I was like, can I do more?

I’m also the founder of Books Ever After Book Boxes & Books by the Bridge Author Events.

So if you don’t find me writing, planning events or packing book boxes, you’ll find me with a plate of nachos binge watching Gilmore Girls for the millionth time. Team Logan all the way.

Oh…and parenting but thats easy, right?

Prince of Ruin by Bec McMaster (Paranormal Romance)

My name is Bec McMaster and I live in a small country town in Australia with my boyfriend, a noisy cockatiel, and a beautiful dog named Kobe. I grew up either with my nose in a book or writing, and never understood why other people didn’t get to watch ‘all the movies in their heads’. Following a lifelong love affair with fantasy, I discovered romance at the age of sixteen and haven’t looked back.

When I’m not writing I like to read, obsess over food blogs and my attempts at recreating their masterpieces, go hiking with my boyfriend, pore over travel brochures, and go to the gym. I’m addicted to travel, and love to set my books in foreign places. It’s the next best thing to travelling there. One day I vow to see the entire world, whether it’s by plane, paper, or imagination.

These days I can be found sitting at my computer with a hot mug of tea, possibly some chocolate (okay, definitely some chocolate) creating the dark and dangerous worlds of the London Steampunk, Dark Arts or Burned Lands series’ where even the darkest hero can find love. I’m a member of RWA (USA and Australia), and am represented by Jessica Faust of BookEnds; LLC

I’m so grateful to get this chance to pursue my dream, so thank you to everyone who reads my books. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them!

One consistent thing with her stories is love will always rise from the ashes.

Marley, her black Labrador, is the inspiration for Bear in Men of Ocean Beach series. Morrison, the family pet rescue cat, who has many OCDs, will be grabbing some of the limelight in a future standalone because the dude rocks the ‘tude.

She likes Pina Coladas, but not getting caught in the rain.

Emma takes regular zen breaks from her writing to listen to and stare at the ocean because you only live once, might as well stare at the sea when you can.

Runaway Princess by Corinne Mazille (Contemporary Romance)

My name is Corinne Mazille, and I love to write romance in all different tropes. I started writing a lot later in life, but once an idea formed in my head after reading hundreds of books, I couldn’t stop. Coming up with characters and worlds is so much fun, and I can’t wait until I can do this fulltime.

I never really thought of myself as being artistic, but years ago, I did start a makeup course because I would have loved to work on movie sets, but real life got in the way and a job opportunity arose that I couldn’t turn down. But I still have a massive love of makeup and can very easily spend hours watching make up tutorials on Youtube.

And I am blessed with a daughter who I have trained well. She loves to play with makeup, although I do find pieces missing from time to time.

We are also huge Disney fans in this house, and we are currently planning our next trip, this time hoping to get to Disney World.

“Flip it. I’ll choose either ‘Face’ or ‘Fin’, if I am wrong then I’ll drink, if I’m right, you drink. Simple.”

I scrunch my nose and examine the coin closely. I don’t know how, but this game feels rigged in his favour.

“Alright,” I say hesitantly, “But if I find out you’re cheating I’ll summon Cerberus to chew you up and spit you out.”

“Can you summon Cerberus?” he asks with an arched brow.

“I haven’t had to try…yet,” I say with a shrug.

He chuckles. It’s a magnificent melody. There is something so wholly mortal about it, and although I wish otherwise, I find myself savouring the sound and remembering it for future use.

It may not be a syren song, but it’s something I wish to practice more of.

“I do not cheat; I just don’t lose,” he informs me.

“You can’t always win.”

I toss the coin high into the air. It gyrates in the candlelight between us, splashing dots of golden light across Kellan’s shadowed face. I catch the coin with both hands.

“Watch me,” he says casually, “It’s fin.”

I unclasp my palms slowly as if I were releasing a dragonfly. I feel his smugness before I even see the coin.

He hands me the refilled cap with a grin, “Best of three?”

Excerpt

The tram was climbing the part of New Elvenswood that had spread out over the sloping hills to the northeast. New Elvenswooders called it the Hills, Hillside, or even Upside. The valley, on the other hand, was usually just the Valley.

Charlie looked out the tram’s window. The November sky was hidden behind a lace-like veil of fog that gave the world a magical look. It pulled her mind toward fairy tales, toward Fair Folk on iridescent wings that made the holiday forests come to life with light and icy ornaments. Charlie looked away, looked down to the casserole of caramelized pears she had prepared for the Thanksgiving dinner. Magical. Though not for her.

Charlie had tried to worm her way out of spending Thanksgiving at her parents’ house, but her father and her mother had mounted a combined assault on their youngest daughter strong enough to render any lie of prior plans null and void. They had appealed to her emotions.

We hardly get to see you anymore, and you live just down in the Valley, her mother had said. You never come visit.

I’m almost done restoring that cabinet finally, and you promised you would help me, remember? Let’s do that over the weekend, her father had said.

In the end, Charlie had caved and agreed to come home for Thanksgiving dinner. She had determinedly not brought an overnight bag because she had no wish at all to stay the night, let alone the weekend, and spend it in her old room, her old bed, feeling like she had when she still lived at her parents’ house.

Charlie put the casserole down in the empty seat next to hers, fussed with her scarf and the suddenly itchy and too tight dress under it. Mom and Dad never make the twins feel that guilty, and they actually moved out of town.

The tram was almost empty, and Charlie got off at one of the last stops on this line, Oak Eaves. She readjusted her scarf again, pulled on her gloves, and stepped out of the warmth of public transport into the icy November air. It had started snowing just a couple of days ago, and here on the Hills, there was still a good amount more snow than back down in the Valley. Charlie crunched her way through the whiteness as the tram started speeding away past her. Her sighs turned into icy clouds.

“Miss! Excuse me?”

Charlie turned, and stared. “Ah, my pears!” One of the other passengers had her casserole dish in hand and was walking up to her.

“Sorry — you left this on the tram,” he said, and handed her the dish.

“Oh, thank you. You just saved me from embarrassing myself.” She looked after the tram, which was moving farther up the Hills. “Was this your stop?”

He had no cap on, no gloves either. His hair was dark and thick, already catching snowflakes like icing sugar, and there was laughter in his eyes. “No, not quite. But I’m afraid I had to get off to catch your attention.” He grinned. “Your mind seemed elsewhere.”

Excerpt

I climbed off my bed and moved to the door, pressing my ear to it to hear who he was talking to.

“A shadow under the door is a dead giveaway that you’re in there,” a deep voice said.

I looked down at the shadow caused by my feet. Ah hell. I opened the door and my breath caught in my throat.

The guy from the bar was standing in the hallway with Marco.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

He looked at me with those teal eyes but showed no sign of recognition from our run-in outside the men’s room. “Excuse me?”

“We met last night.”

His bottom lip jutted out like he had no idea what I was talking about.

Seriously? He was gonna pretend he didn’t know me and hadn’t insulted me? Well, if that’s how he was gonna play it, so was I. “Now that you mention it…” My eyes moved over his black cargo pants and black T-shirt molded to his broad chest. “The guy I met last night was a lot better looking.” I drank in his dirty blond hair which was more tousled than it had been at the bar, like he’d just woken up. “And, he was taller. And a lot more built.”

“This is my partner, ma’am,” Marco explained.

I glared at Marco. “Kresley.”

Unaffected by my annoyance with his use of ma’am, he continued. “This is Tristan Stone. He’ll be with you when I’m not. We take turns securing locations before you arrive.” He looked to Tristan and leveled him with his eyes. “Like he did last night at the bar.”

I turned my glare to Tristan. Asshole.

He stared back at me, unfazed and not about to apologize for being deceptive.

“We were just discussing the week ahead,” Marco explained to me.

“Oh, great. I have a request.” My eyes moved between them. Tristan was younger and less bulky than Marco, but no less athletic—even though I tried to make him feel less than. “Could you maybe try to look more like college students? The dark clothes make you stand out and, frankly, I don’t want to be known as ‘the girl with the bodyguards’.”

“You are the girl with the bodyguards,” Tristan clipped.

I cocked my head. “It’s a request.”

“Requests don’t have to be granted,” he fired back.

I opened my mouth to respond—

“We’ll do what we can,” Marco interrupted, clearly the calmer of the two. “As long as our weapons are concealed, I don’t see why we can’t try to blend in a little more.” He turned around and walked to his room without another word.

I expected Tristan to follow him, but he didn’t.

Perfect. “Let’s just get this out of the way now then,” I said to Tristan as Marco’s door closed. “I don’t know what your problem is with me—”

He scoffed. Scoffed.

I trudged on, getting more pissed by the second. “You work for me. A little common courtesy is not too much to ask.”

He rolled his eyes.

God dammit. “If I can’t trust you to protect me if things go wrong, my parents can find someone else who can.”

His eyes narrowed. “What the hell does that mean?”

“This whole not knowing me thing after you blatantly disrespected me last night. Maybe I didn’t know who you were at the bar, but you knew who I was. So, what gives?”

“Girls like you are what gives.”

My head shot back so fast I was surprised it didn’t slam into the door behind me. “Excuse me?”

“You were almost taken in France.”

“Thanks for the recap. But I know what happened.”

He shook his head, his teeth clenched and jaw ticking. “You’re careless.”

I pointed to myself. “I’m careless? I’ve got two bodyguards for Christ’s sake.”

“You get one life to live. Think about how you want to live it.”

“Wow. So, now you’re a philosopher?”

“It’s no secret there are people out there who still may want to get to you.”

“Yes. And that’s why you’re here.”

“So, why the bar? Was it absolutely necessary to go out last night?” he asked.

“What I do is none of your business.”

“The hell it isn’t. I had to be there an hour and a half early—with added security—securing the place, not to mention overseeing every fucker they let in there.”

I hated that I was being reprimanded. I’d only wanted to make friends and find a way to sleep. But maybe he was right. Maybe I should’ve considered how it would affect them. Maybe I should’ve considered the work they needed to put in every time I went somewhere.

“I could have been someone trying to get to you,” he continued. “But you were standing there all drunk gazing at me like you would’ve gone home with me if only I asked.”

My mouth parted, too stunned by his words to respond.

“And then that ridiculous necklace you wore. It must be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Way to stay off people’s radars.”

“I’ve been through enough counseling to know what happened to me was not my fault.”

“The thing was like a damn beacon signaling that you’ve got money.”
