BOOK TOUR: The Light Keeper by Christina Wallace #YoungAdult #EpicFantasy

The Light Keeper

by Christina Wallace

Genre: Epic YA Fantasy

Wishes aren’t all they’re cracked up to be… especially when you have to capture the Fairies who grant them to you.

Er… make that faeries… and not the normal, hiding-in-plain-sight magical kind.

When a misadventure cleaning out the attic leads Isaac to release a faerie trapped in a glass ball of light, he believes he’s struck gold–in the form of wishes. All he has to do is mention the name that was engraved on the ball, and the indebted faerie would grant him any three wishes he wanted.

The best part of all was knowing that there was an entire chest of captured faeries waiting to be freed…

But when strange things start to happen around town, Isaac begins to wonder if the increasingly unfortunate events are his doing.

Only his mysterious neighbor, Yara, knows the truth about his lineage as a Light Keeper.

Can Yara’s strength and wisdom guide Isaac into his new role?

Can Isaac make things right again?

Or will his dream-come-true turn into his worst nightmare?

Rows and rows of glass balls stared back at me. They almost reminded me of ornaments without the hooks. I reached in and clasped one of the balls in my hands; the ball glowed a faint orange. I rolled it around but couldn’t identify a battery or a charge port. What powered this thing? The only other interesting thing about the glass was the word engraved on the side. C-R-I-S-T-O. Cristo? What a disappointment. Lightbulbs. I had torn the attic upside down for lightbulbs.

I was reaching back down to pick up another ball when the first slipped from my hand. I grabbed for it but clasped only air. I couldn’t do anything except listen to the glass shatter on the floor.

As I imagined Mom’s frustration when I explained to her that I’d broken one of Grandfather’s priceless heirlooms, a wispy fog poured out from the shattered glass, floated over the floor, and expanded to cover every inch of space. The cold and damp fog sent a chill through my body. The light from the window illuminated the silhouette of a figure in the mist. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I swatted my hand to wave away the fog from my face, but the figure remained.

I wanted to run back downstairs, nail the door shut, and apologize to Mom and Dad, but I couldn’t move. I wasn’t sure if I was frozen in fear or had an intense fight complex or my curiosity was too strong, but I needed to see what was coming. My knees quaked, and my heart thumped as the fog cleared and the shape in front of me became more pronounced.

The figure loomed over me. He was thin and tall, not abnormally so but taller than the average man. His suit was one I had only seen in movies about olden times and reminded me of a leprechaun’s. The suit had a waistcoat, and he even wore his trousers tucked into long socks. He also wore loafers with buckles on the shoes. The man’s skin was rough and weathered. He had a long-hooked nose, his face formed sharp angles, and his ears were half the size of his head.

The most curious thing about this person were his eyes. The man strode toward me. His eyes turned my blood cold. Was it because looking at his pupils felt like staring into a deep well? His intense gaze locked onto mine. I wanted to leave, but something prevented me from looking away from him.

A lump in my throat grew larger with each step he took. He came to a stop in front of me with perfect posture, hands folded behind his back. In a stone so calm and quiet it almost scared me more, he asked, “Do you know my name?”

My stomach lurched and threatened to make me throw up from panic. This person had come from a ball inside a secret locked chest. My mind raced a mile a minute. How would I know his name? The only indicator I could think of was the word I read on the glass before it broke, Cristo.

In a broken voice that squeaked and made me sound younger than my sister, I asked, “Cristo?”

The man snapped into a bow. The quick gesture caught me off guard and made me hop a step backward. His friendly smile stretched from ear to ear but did not match the despair his eyes made me feel. He stood and grandly announced, “At your service. What tasks will you have me perform?”

Danielle M. Orsino is a fantasy novelist whose lifelong vision to create whimsical realms that her readers can escape to. Her compelling word-weaving pays homage to a multitude of personal muses, from Chris Claremont and George Pérez (both famous comic book writers), to Anne Rice and Wonder Woman.

The creative spark of storytelling has been with Danielle ever since she was a child, but martial arts and her nursing career took center stage into adulthood. Then, on a day like any other, it was reignited during the most unexpected of moments: while treating one of her patients. Seeing that they longed for a distraction during their arduous treatments, the floodgates of inspiration soon burst forth. So, Danielle took it upon herself to tell them a story; a fantastical narrative that would leave the confines of that IV room’s walls and land upon a page. Before she knew it, what started as an imaginative tale to pass the time, turned into book, followed by an entire series: The Birth of Fae. This awe-inspiring series includes Locked out of Heaven (Book One), Thine Eyes of Mercy (Book Two), and From The Ashes (Book Three), all of which are published by 4 Horsemen Publications, Inc. And with an unwavering passion for cosplay and comics, it was a unanimous decision to place her on the cover of each book in all her Fae cosplay glory. The Birth of Fae also features Los, an affable chameleon dragon inspired by her fun-loving Yorkie named Carlos.

When writing wasn’t at the forefront of her mind, Danielle was a successful Martial Artist. Some of her achievements include “1999 World Martial Arts Hall of Fame Inductee”, “Female Martial Artist of the Year”, “WKA World Champion Silver Medalist 2008”, and numerous more. She has also garnered hundreds of martial art tournament wins, various other national and world titles, and features on big-name channels like TLC and CBS. She even had the rare opportunity to perform for former U.S. President Bill Clinton and collaborate alongside Vincent Lyn and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. From there, she pursued her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science, and she is now a Licensed Practical Nurse who focuses on Lyme disease research.

This “New Queen of the Fae’s” unmatched world-building and masterful Fae-origin retellings have led to an ever-growing queendom of “Fae-natics”. To begin embarking upon a quest in an epic world unlike any other, visit Danielle M. Orsino’s official website at http://www.BirthOfTheFae.com.

When Tor opened the door to Ed’s Stumble Inn, he was greeted by raucous laughter and chanting. He followed a short hallway that opened to a taproom thick with patrons. All were facing the bar, upon which Borgli stood, his hand gripping the shaft of a long, curved horn. Quell leaned over the railing of the loft above him, pouring a tankard of ale down the large end of the horn. The inn’s patrons cheered as the dwarf downed the ale coming out the bottom. With the tankard empty, Quell grabbed another full mug and began pouring it into the horn. The crowd chanted and cheered as Borgli continued to drink.

Tor shot Koji an annoyed glance before pushing his way through the crowd. He knew some of the men might get upset, but when they spied Koji in his wake, they were unlikely to pick a fight. Upon reaching the stairs, Tor raced up and pushed past the patrons occupying the loft. He stopped a stride from where Quell stood with her back to him. He counted nine tankards on the table, all of them empty. Beside the mugs was a small glass filled with dark liquid. He picked up the glass and gave it a sniff. It smelled of anise. Swoon. He gripped Quell by her shoulder and turned her toward him. Her eyes widened in surprise.

“What are you doing?” he demanded.

“Borgli is trying to win a bet.”

“A bet?’

“To down ten tankards of ale without stopping for a breath.”

Tor closed his eyes for a beat before speaking. “You two were supposed to procure provisions and wait here without causing trouble.”

“We did.”

“This is trouble.” He motioned to the cup of swoon. “What is this?”

“That is for me. I am not overly fond of ale.”

“Well, Borgli is about to get a surprise.” He poured the glass of hard alcohol down the horn, leaned over the railing, and waited.

The dwarf chugged and swallowed gulp after gulp, draining the horn until the swoon reached him. His eyes suddenly bulged, and he tore his mouth from the horn. He coughed, spluttered, and staggered a step, appearing as if he might fall off the bar. His fist thumped against his chest as the crowd quieted, all eyes on Borgli while he blinked with bleary, red eyes. When the dwarf’s mouth opened, Tor feared he might vomit on the crowd below him. Instead, he let out a mighty belch, its timbre low enough to shake the room.

The crowd burst out in laughter. Numerous men exchanged coins they had won or lost on the bet. Borgli knelt on the bar and accepted a stack of coins from the barkeep.

Quell tapped Tor’s shoulder, drawing his attention away from the scene below. “I was looking forward to that drink, but with the coin we just won, I can buy myself another.”

“How much did you win?”

“We had ten silver pieces left after we bought the provisions you requested. Two were spent on these drinks and the food we consumed before this all started. The rest was placed on the bet, so we turned eight silver marks to sixteen.”

Tor grunted. “That is exactly how many you started with.”

“So, you aren’t mad?”

“When I asked you to avoid trouble, I also meant to avoid attention. This little stunt is exactly the opposite of what I wanted. That said, a little extra coin won’t hurt, especially now that we need to room here tonight.”

“What took you so long anyway?”

He grimaced, his ire again rising.

Koji answered for him. “Finding horses proved to be more challenging than expected.”

A voice arose from the din of the crowd, singing a song unfamiliar to Tor. The voice was low, gravelly, and while the singer likely attempted to carry a tune, he failed miserably. Borgli.

Tor sighed. “Let’s go get him before he finds more trouble.”

He eased between the people in the loft and descended to the main floor with Koji and Quell in his wake.

The crowd had disbursed and spread throughout the inn. In the center of the room, Borgli stood on a table with a mug in each hand. He swayed as he sang, spilling ale with each movement but appearing oblivious to the puddles forming on the table. He stumbled, stepped on a wet spot, and slipped as his foot shot out from beneath him. With a roar of surprise, the dwarf flopped on his back and dumped both full ales onto the patrons occupying the table behind him. He rolled sideways, fell off the table, and disappeared.

Eight rough-looking men, all with wet splotches on their faces and tunics, stood, their expressions like thunderclouds.

“By the gods,” Tor swore. “Now, he did it.” Over his shoulder, he said, “Come on, Koji. We’ve a mess to clean up.”

Borgli staggered to his feet and looked up as one of the upset men stepped before him. He narrowed his eyes and stared up at the man. “You seem to have spilt on yerself, mister.”

The man growled. “You snide little piece of crap.”

His fist struck Borgli square in the face. The dwarf stumbled a step, shook his head, and grinned. “Let’s play.”

Releasing a roar, the dwarf ducked low, charged the man, and wrapped his arms around his legs. Although the man stood a foot and a half taller than Borgli and likely outweighed him by a hundred pounds, Borgli picked him off his feet and slammed the man down on a table. The table tipped over onto a startled couple. The woman screamed, the man roared, and a melee broke out.

I love fantasy, adventure, and magic. More than that, I adore my readers.

About the Author

James Hai is a new author who has written a number of fictional suspense
and scifi thrillers. With hopes of bringing them to life as he debut.

James has dabbled in the arts of various kind as a youngling; from drawing,
painting, writing lyrics and songs during grade school years to singing
horribly and loudly to the tunes of many oldies – like Whitney
Houston, Elvis, Madonna, Roxette, Bette Midler, Cindy Lauper, Tina Turner
and even earlier songs like Patsy Cline and Ben E. King, only because the
songs had meaning in the words. And thus began James’ passion with
words . . . writing.

Before he could even write his first piece of lyrics or stories, he had
made up short stories and orally told them to family and friends through out
the years. It was in telling these stories that he saw how alluring and
intrigued people got when they listened to or heard a GOOD story. The better
the story was the more intent they focused and the longer they gave
attention to it.

Through the years working in the corporate world in recruiting, sales and
business in general, he had learned how important story telling was. Key to
his success in all those fields was his ability to tell a good story (of the
company, of the people, of the product, and of the services he worked for)
that allured and intrigued the customers enough to give it an ear to learn
more.

That gift has always been a part of him, from his earlier years as his
family fled as refugees with the eventual opportunity to live an American
Dream. He continues to hone this skill, from his secondary school years
living away from home and being raised by the SVDs (Society of Divine Word),
a religious and dedicated organization of men & women who trained people
to be religious and spiritual in their own unique way, until his graduation
earning a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy and finally moving back to secular
life.

After orally telling short random stories for so long, family and friends
suggested he share those stories to a broader group, the general public. He
now concentrate on sharing newly created stories with the inspiration of
giving inspiration, shedding light in times of darkness, and giving hope
when it seems hopeless. As he would state: Life can be Good, if you know how
to appreciate it!

My lips hitch up an inch as the hulking, slender man bends down to whisper in my ear. “A divided kingdom without a leader is weak. You will fall. You will fail. You will all die without my kindness, little girl.”

He expects me to falter, shiver, and drop my gaze to the ground like the flock of gentry buzzing around him.

My eyes widen in feigned dismay. “Kindness? Why did no one think to tell me you had any?”

I have to allow him that one concession: Rydekar is fun to tease.

He doesn’t even smile. I don’t think anyone has taunted him. “I have none. You will beg nonetheless.”

I just may, in his dreams. And in my nightmares.

No one was ever born less suited to ruling than Rissa, the thorn of the seelie realm—a half-fae so wild she’s spent the better part of a hundred years in the woods.

For all her flaws, she’s the last of the high court bloodline, and the southern king seems to think that’s reason enough to slap a crown on her feathered head. He needs her to unify the seelie forces. She needs him to forget about that nonsense.

In an effort to aid her people without condemning herself to a lifetime of misery, she sets off on a journey to find the one person with a stronger claim to the throne than hers: the cursed prince.

Sealed in the mountains of the Wilderness, under many spells, the heir of the first seelie queen is the only royal strong enough to protect the fae lands from their immortal invaders.

Surviving the untamed tribes and awakening a thousand-year-old prince seem a lot easier than ruling an entire kingdom where everyone hates her very nature.

And her choices won’t come without consequences.

MY REVIEW

5 stars!

Magic. Intrigue. Action. Romance. The Cursed Crown has all this and more.

Rissa is a feisty fae heroine who isn’t afraid to sting with sharp words, but falling for the Unseelie king terrifies her. I loved that Rye accepted her, and loved the unique characteristics Rissa thought made her ugly. She was strong, even though it took an epic journey for her to realize her true worth and unlock all her abilities.

The Unseelie king knew Rissa was his mate long before he sought her help. Despite his need for her, he knows he must put the people before his own desires. His arrogance, and Rissa’s reactions, add humor to the story. She loves disobeying just to see how he’ll react.

The Cursed Crown took me on an epic adventure with magic, danger, and romance. I couldn’t put it down! Definitely a 5-star fantasy read!
