Michael: After a troubled childhood and becoming a Marine, I returned from war injured and alone. I found myself again when I discovered Drag. I love being a Queen almost as much as I love the boy I’ve dreamed of since I was a child. Now he needs my help and I’ll fight hell itself to save him.

Te’Garth: My mother is a demon, my dad is an angel, and their love is legendary. I hope to have that kind of passion with Michael, a man I’ve shared dreams with since childhood. But first I need to reverse a forced mating claim, or death will take me from my true love.

Jessie: I met Michael in Afghanistan, and helped the injured Marine heal in body and soul. Together we explored our forbidden desires until he was sent home months later. We lost contact, only to meet again at Chasers, a gay bar, where he’s a Drag Queen and I provide security. I still want him — and the man he’s in love with. But something dangerous is hunting Garth. If I want to save them both, I must overcome my fears. Even if it means risking more than my life…

Michael

I rolled over and hit the alarm. I usually worked until almost dawn and slept until the afternoon, but my boss had wanted me to come in early to help interview some new talent. I’d get today off with pay. I usually didn’t mind, but today I felt so drained I could hardly move. I knew it was from the reoccurring nightmares I’d had last night.

I hated gory horror movies, having lived my own horrors in Afghanistan. But dreaming of huge green-skinned men chasing me? In my nightmare, I could never outrun them and I could never find anywhere to hide. It brought up so many memories of the helplessness and constant fear of combat, and I didn’t want to go there. But last night, the dream had played in a loop every time I’d close my eyes and drift off to sleep.

No more Sushi before bed.

I made a note to call my therapist and get back on the sleeping pills that helped suppress my dreams. I used to enjoy my dreams, when I believed that my Halfling lover was real. I didn’t like where my thoughts were heading, so I dragged myself out of bed.

I stumbled to the bathroom to take a leak and brush my teeth. As I washed my hands, I looked in the mirror. I was dead tired and glad I didn’t have to go to deal with makeup before leaving the house. Fuck it, I didn’t think I’d even shave. I grabbed the tube of hemorrhoid cream and slathered some under my eyes to reduce those dark bags of fatigue.

I brushed my long blond hair, grabbed an elastic band and put it in a sloppy man bun. Strolling into the kitchen, I scratched my stomach and yawned. Thank God for automatic coffee makers: my life-saving brew was waiting for me. I grabbed a mug, filled it and didn’t even wait for it to cool before I took my first sip.

My phone rang, and I spent a few minutes looking for it. I was so tired and pissy, my silk robe got in my way, so I ripped it trying to pull it off. I’d be really fucking mad about it later after the caffeine worked its magic. By the time I grabbed the phone from the floor, I had missed the call. Fuck. I’d call them back after I drank my first cup, maybe even my second. I didn’t have to wait, though, as it rang again. I hit the screen.

“What?” I growled, but it was early. Especially for me. “I’m not done with my first cup of coffee.”

“It’s after ten, so it’s not early. Asshole.” My friend Conner’s voice did little to help my mood.

“Just because I like to fuck assholes doesn’t make me one. Get that straight, dipshit.”

I heard him laugh. “You’re the one who told me to call and make sure you were up. I’ve been up and at work for almost three hours. Motherfucker.”

Our habit of name-calling actually made me want to smile. “I’ll fuck anyone but your mother. Twatwaffle.” I was just full of jokes today.

“God, I hate waking you up. You’re so sarcastic. Has anyone ever told you you’re a bitch?” Conner was laughing, but I could tell he meant it.

“Only every fucking day. That’s why I’m single. No one can put up with me. In the Marines, I had to get up at five in the morning. I don’t have to do that shit anymore, and I like my sleep. Fucking sue me.” I yawned and gulped my coffee.

“Fine. Well, your grumpy ass is up, and I need to get back to work. Stories don’t write themselves. Fuckface.” Conner was the best journalist I’d ever met. He’d started at the Charlotte Observer as an intern in high school and got a job as a reporter his senior year in college.

Conner and I met several years ago when he came to Chasers to interview the staff about our project for Pride. Chasers Charlotte NoDa focused on different community projects annually. Conner’s story made the front page of the Observer’s Lifestyle section. His piece won several journalism awards, including the national Human Interest Writing Ernie Pyle Award.

Conner and I hit it off from the moment we met since he seemed to like my snarky attitude. He was straight, but I didn’t hold that against him, or so I tell him every chance I get.

Unfortunately, this morning, he didn’t appreciate my Herculean effort to not reach through the phone and strangle him. “Whatever, ConMan.” I used my term of affection so he’d know I wasn’t really angry with him. “Have a good day at work. And I have it on good authority that I have a great ass, not that you’ll ever know.” I hit the red button to hang up and dropped the phone on the couch. Draining my mug, I made my way to the coffee pot for another shot of caffeine. I trudged back to the couch and thought about setting the alarm to sleep another fifteen minutes when my phone rang again.

“Son of a bitch.” I grabbed the phone and didn’t even look at the screen before I answered. “Conner, you needle dick, stop calling me. I will kick your ass. You and I both know I can and will do it.”

“I’m sorry. I must have the wrong number.” The female voice in my ear had me cringing.

“Aw, fu… uh, I mean, I’m sorry ma’am. I thought you were a friend of mine.” I sighed as I gulped more coffee.

“Oh, wow. Sounds like a heck of a friendship.” I could hear the amusement in her voice. “I’m the one who’s sorry. I thought I called the phone number someone gave me to get personal security. I may have transposed some numbers.”

“Yeah, that must be it. I’ve never done personal security before. I mean, I could if I weren’t working till four in the morning.” I yawned and stretched again.

“I must have woken you. No wonder you’re upset. I’ll let you go. And I’m so sorry for bothering you.”

“No ma’am, no bother. Have a good day.” I ended the call and decided I had time to drag my happy ass to the shower, even if I wasn’t going to shave. If people didn’t like looking at my morning scruff, fuck ‘em.

The shower did little to improve my mood, but at least I felt more awake. Mostly. I grabbed my large to-go mug and drained the coffee carafe into the spill-free mug and headed out the door.

Grumpy as I was, I loved my house. In San Fran, I’d had a condo in a big sub-division, but here, I could afford a nice home in a nice neighborhood. Nothing fancy, but much nicer than where I grew up.

I looked around at the well-manicured lawns of the houses on my street. I stopped, listening to the children playing in the yards. I never really paid attention to the kids before, since I’d leave for work around eight at night. The bar itself opens at nine and closes at two-thirty, but I always stayed late and made sure the guests made it to their cars safely. I always had to unwind with cheesy ‘80s movies too.

Thus, my early morning bedtime — and why ten a.m. was such an ungodly hour for me to be awake.

As I pulled into Chaser’s parking lot, I was trying to suck the last few drops of coffee from the damn too-small mug. It had to be empty, because, trust me, I can suck the last drops out of anything. Foxy had better have a pot brewed and waiting, or there’d be hell to pay.

Carl Fox might be the manager of the bar and my boss, but I could still kick his ass.
I slammed my car door before making it to the back entrance and stopped by the employee lounge.

“Damn, you look like a hot mess.” Foxy’s voice sounded behind me. His amusement didn’t help my mood.

“Fuck you, Foxy. I’ve only had a few hours of sleep. But your life is spared, since I see the coffee is made.” I poured half the pot into my to-go mug and turned to face my boss.

“You’re a surly, bitter man in the mornings.” He filled his own mug and sipped it and grimaced before he turned his attention back to me.

“It’s a good thing I work nights then, isn’t it?”

He rolled his eyes at my comment and moved in for a hug. I slid my free hand around his shoulders and gave him a tight squeeze before releasing him and gulping down a few more sips of caffeine.

“God, Foxy, you never get better at making this shit. It’s not so hard.” I shook my head but took another drink. “So, how many performers do we have scheduled today?”

“We have a few queens coming in. I have about ten go-go boys scheduled, too, but they’re all dancing at the same time. Then Manny is going to teach them a short routine and see who can pull the moves.” He looked down at his tablet. “I have a part-time bartender scheduled around two and a few bouncers and security guys who will be talking with Dan.”

I was happy to hear about the extra security; maybe I’d get home an hour earlier.
Dan was a mountain of a man who was head of security. He’d been with Chasers from the beginning. The business was starting to gain more ground, and we needed more security to protect the drag performers and go-go boys, and even make sure the clientele got to their cars safely.

I was surprised we’d gained so much new business, especially in a conservative small town in the south. But I was happy too. It showed progress, no matter the current upswing in hate rhetoric.

“Okay, who’s first and when are we going to start?” I chugged from my coffee mug and tried to hide my yawn.

Foxy chuckled and started another pot of coffee. I groaned, wishing I’d thought to do it before he did. My coffee was so much better.

“First appointment in about twenty minutes. Finish your brew. I don’t want you to scare these poor guys before we even get them to sign their contracts.”

Publisher: Changeling Press
Cover Artist: Angela Knight

After combat news cameraman Adam Parker covers a Times Square attack by blue-skinned aliens that costs hundreds of lives, the invaders try to kidnap him. Fortunately, the attempt is foiled by a sword-swinging Knight of the Round Table and his witch partner. But when the vampire knight removes his helmet, Adam realizes Sir Baldulf is the father who abandoned him and his mother when he was ten.

Ulf swears he and Opal Cassidy are Adam’s only hope of survival. Otherwise the aliens will keep coming after him. Furious, Adam wants nothing to do with either of them — especially after Opal uses her magic to force him to run from the aliens instead of doing his job.

Opal has been ordered to seduce Adam and transform him into a vampire. Still grieving for a previous partner after more than a decade, the witch wants nothing to do with the handsome, cynical mortal. But orders are orders, so seduction it is.

Despite Adam’s bitterness and her grief, the two discover they have red-hot sexual chemistry. As the stakes climb and passion turns to love, Opal and Adam realize that if they don’t take a chance on each other, humanity will pay the price.

Warm, muscled arms wrapped around her waist, and a big body slid against her from behind, snuggling close. The scent of him made Opal’s heart skip in sheer joy.

“Joaquin?” She rolled over to face him, eyes widening. It was him. “Joaquin!”

His wide, white grin flashed in the dim light as he rose to one elbow above her. “Hello, love.”

She caught his handsome face in her hands. Treasuring the warmth of his skin between her palms, she fell into the love shining in the rich, velvet dark of his eyes. With a needy gasp, she pulled him into a ravenous kiss. He felt so solid and strong as she pressed against him, all long, lean muscle. Her world had become as hollow as a drum without him, empty with yearning. “Oh God, I’ve missed you,” she moaned against his mouth. “I’m so sorry I failed…”

“Opal, no one could have done more.” His long fingers stroked her red curls. There was such sadness in his gaze, her chest hurt. “And I know how much you miss me. I’ve missed you, too. But darling, it’s time you let me go.” He lowered his head until his forehead touched hers. “Because, my love, I’m gone.” He began to fade from her arms like mist in the morning sun.

“No!” She screamed, clutching for him, but her hands raked through empty air.

* * *

Opal came awake crying. She sat up and swung her legs out of bed, burying her face in her hands. “I should have Truebonded with you when I had the chance,” she groaned to the man who’d been dead more than a decade.

Her cell phone vibrated on the oak nightstand with Alys Hawkewood’s ringtone. The atonal thumping notes made Opal long for the noxious metallic brrrrriiiing of the twentieth century. She scooped up her phone. “Hello, Alys,” she said, wiping her face with the back of her free hand. “What did you See this time?”

There was a pause. “Are you all right? You sound a little choked.”

“I’m fine.” Briskly, she added, “So what fresh hell is it now?”

Alys snorted. “‘Fresh hell’ is right. You need to meet us at the Great Hall. Arthur and Morgana want to brief you on an assignment I Saw.”

“Oh, that doesn’t sound good.” Not if the job was bad enough to trigger one of her friend’s visions.

“It’s not. And you’re not going to like it.”

Terrific. She forced a light tone. “Is it my turn to get captured by Fomos?” Which was what had happened to Alys the week before. From what she’d said, it had been ugly.

“No, someone else is in the bull’s-eye this time. And I’m afraid you’ll have your hands full keeping this one alive. He’s not going to want to cooperate.”

Merlin’s beard. “I’ll be right over.”

With a sigh, Opal reached for her magic and sent it rolling down her body. When the wave of sparks dispersed, she was dressed in black slacks, boots and an emerald silk blouse. Beat the hell out of whalebone and a bustle.

Boot heels clicking on polished red tile, Opal strode through the hacienda she’d built for Joaquin a hundred years before. She could have gated directly to the great hall, of course, but it was a nice night and she liked to walk whenever she could. Laziness was not a survival characteristic for Magekind agents.

The night was cool and pleasant, a quarter moon floating in the star-flecked Mageverse sky as she headed down the stone walkway to the cobblestone street. Avalon was at its most active at night when the vampires were out. The crowd was thick with agents kicking back between missions. Men and women strolled among fifteen centuries’ worth of architecture — everything from Roman villas to Frank Lloyd Wright. Stained-glass windows shone with rainbow light, giving Avalon a fairytale quality that prosaic mortal cities lacked.

Looking around at the laughing, chatting couples, Opal remembered the dream, and her heart ached. Eleven years ago she’d walked at Joaquin’s side like that, enjoying private jokes, arguing over mission strategies, anticipating a stolen hour or two in bed.

Now all she had was the job.

Ten minutes later, she reached the Great Hall that served as the Magekind’s headquarters. A massive gothic cathedral of a building, it towered against the night sky, huge stained-glass windows blazing into the night. Arched doors, each fifteen feet in height, swung silently wide at her approach, then closed behind her with a resonant thunk.

Time to find out just how bad this was going to be.

Excerpt from By the Numbers

“Good morning, D and S Attorneys, how may I help you?” Zoe Carter answered the phone professionally, as always. She always did her best no matter what job she was doing.

“You can start by making sure the damned coffee is fresh.” She grimaced. Unfortunately, her employers weren’t so congenial. From the sound of it, Sebastian Collingsworth wasn’t in a particularly good mood. “And get me a decent shirt from Julian’s.”

“Yes –” The line went dead. “– sir.” She sighed. “Good morning to you, too, asshole.”

Working for vampires sucked. Literally. Zoe Carter was just thankful she wasn’t on the menu.

She was the accountant and receptionist for Dorian and Sebastian Collingsworth, owners of D&S Collingsworth, Attorneys at Law, and had been for the last ten years. Because she was the most senior staff member — OK, so she was the only staff member — she saw the men at their best and worst. She also knew D&S Attorneys was only part of what the two big vampires did.

As a rule, the pair weren’t exactly morning people. Other than that, they didn’t seem to have any of the weaknesses she’d always thought vampires had. Instead, they had the arrogant belief they were superior to every being on the planet. Like most men she knew.

One thing the pair had on other men was the second job. They also worked for a very high-class escort service for women with particular and… intense tastes. On more than one occasion, they’d called her to come in before dawn to help one or both of them to their underground chamber at the office.

At first, she’d worried about them getting caught — and her being trapped in the middle of some illegal prostitution ring. Being paranoid made her hyper aware of the people around her, especially when the local sheriff was a frequent visitor. There seemed to be several people who not only knew about the side business the two vampires had going on, but also that they were vampires. When she’d questioned Dorian about it, he’d laughed at her, saying not everyone was so naive to believe everyone in the world was human. As if the whole friggin’ town of Mount Bell was populated with vampires!

There was no denying their sex appeal. Zoe creamed her panties every day she went to work. These men exuded sex. The nasty, raunchy kind. They definitely fit the part they were apparently expected to play. She had heard them talking on more than one occasion about enjoyable bouts of kink. It was definitely the kind of sex nice girls like herself didn’t participate in.

Yeah. Right.

Damn.

It was a good thing she was so good at her job. As it was, she had to constantly recheck her figures. She found concentration almost impossible at times. She was too busy trying to catch glimpses of the two sexy men.

The only bad thing was she couldn’t stand either of them. Oh, they were nice enough to almost everyone. Just not to her. The only reason she stayed was because every time she tried to leave, they’d give her a raise, or a “continuance bonus.”

Aside from that, they were the biggest assholes in the world. They never smiled at her, never told her she did a good job, and treated her like a servant. It was almost like they wanted her to hate them.

As to today, she’d had this morning’s conversation with one or the other of them several times over the years and she knew better than to come back with only a “decent shirt.” Before she left, she put on a pot of dark roast and took the company credit card. She’d get a complete change of clothing for each of them. Julian would know what she needed.

By the time the brothers entered the office via the back entrance, she was back with everything they could possibly need.

“God, I need a Scotch.”

Except that.

Dorian looked like he’d been in a barroom brawl rather than on a date with some rich man or woman who needed companionship for the night and didn’t want complications. In fact, it looked like there had been plenty of complications last night. Blood and dirt streaked his clothing and face. His hair was a matted mess instead of the shiny, silky black it normally was.

“Just wash up and change clothes, Dorian. Griping about it isn’t helping.”

“If I’d known he was a junkie, I wouldn’t be in this situation, Sebastian. You’re the Psy. You should have warned me.” Both men were clearly agitated, and the longer Zoe listened to them, the more alarmed she grew. Dorian obviously expected Sebastian to have warned him about the drugs, but Zoe knew it was very likely Sebastian didn’t know. He could sense strong emotions, not read minds, and the strong emotions he could sense was what he fed from. As it was, she was terribly afraid they’d done something awful.

“What did you two do? If you’ve killed someone, I swear I’ll be the first one to go to the police.”

Dorian rolled his eyes and Sebastian gave her a scathing look. “Of course we didn’t kill anyone,” Sebastian snapped.

Dorian barked a sharp laugh. “No, but I may later. Doesn’t our contract state that drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited?”

“Would you two stop for a minute?” As Dorian undressed, Zoe grew increasingly alarmed. When he took off his suit jacket and turned around, she saw nasty gashes on his back. They were deep and angry looking, already getting red at the edges as if infection was imminent. She approached Dorian and carefully touched the edge of one such gash.

“Fucking hell!” He jumped and whipped around. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“This happened last night?” Zoe ignored her employer’s outburst. She was used to it. When she reached out again to touch the irritated skin to see if it was warm, Dorian rounded on her.

“Don’t fucking touch me! The only thing you need to concern yourself with is giving me the clothes I asked for, then getting the hell out!”

Zoe had never seen him like this. Sebastian gripped Dorian’s shoulder as if to hold the man back. Dorian looked absolutely furious. What the hell had she done to set him off?

“I was just trying to help. You’re hurt.”

“When I want your help, I’ll ask for it, mortal. Now get the fuck out!”

Zoe had never backed down from either of them before, but something in the way he looked at her scared the holy hell out of her. She backed out of the room, grabbed the clothes she’d acquired and tossed them in the general direction of the men. With one last angry look, Zoe turned and walked out the door.

Fuck it. She didn’t need this. She had a vacation coming. They’d have to live with her taking it early. Unless a couple weeks of solitude changed her mind, she wouldn’t be back.

Fuck it. Fuck them.

Jakob stalked toward her, two hundred plus pounds of rippling muscle and attitude. His stiffly erect cock outlined in mouthwatering detail beneath his flight suit left little doubt as to what he wanted. Unfortunately, the glare he directed at her said he probably wanted to tan her hide first.

Not that she didn’t deserve it. Caitlyn had snuck out on him without any explanation the last time they were together. Caitlyn had a feeling that cyborgs didn’t appreciate being tricked. Something to do with their manly image and all that.

She stood her ground, eyes darting wildly in all directions, seeking an escape route.
Caitlyn let out a long sigh. Not happening. Not this time. He’d caught up to her on one of the smallest and most crowded space stations in the sector, leaving her with limited options. Only one viable one, really. Try to deflect Jakob’s anger with sex.

Hey. A girl had to use whatever worked.

Jakob stopped a bare arm’s length in front of her. If looks could kill, Caitlyn would be dead at his feet. He was still glaring when he pulled her into his arms and covered her lips with his mouth.

Damn, he tasted good. Too good. If she weren’t careful, Jakob could be her downfall. Caitlyn wanted to run away and hide almost as much as she wanted to spread herself naked beneath him.

This was crazy. Totally, completely, utterly crazy. Caitlyn was acting like some lovesick idiot, not a grown woman who had been taking care of herself since she was orphaned at the age of fourteen.

Jakob gentled his hold and ran his tongue across the seam of her lips, coaxing her to open. When Caitlyn complied, he took immediate advantage, plundering the depths with his tongue.

Caitlyn resisted for the merest fraction of a second before melting against his warm bulk, reveling in the feeling of his hard body against her.

Caitlyn’s reaction to Jakob confused her. She’d never felt this kind of connection to a male before, cyborg or human. Never cared beyond the gratification of the physical act of joining. Too much was at stake to let herself get carried away with sentimental nonsense like love and happily ever after.

Hell, that was one of the reasons Caitlyn preferred to satisfy her amorous side with cyborgs. Cyborgs were sensible when it came to sex. They were generally happy to play; love them and leave them. Cyborgs didn’t do forever, which left a big question unanswered.

Why had Jakob pursued her across the vast reaches of the galaxy? That wasn’t supposed to happen.

She sighed, stretching her arms up to wrap them around his neck. Lust swept through her in a deliciously warm wave. To hell with expectations and unanswered questions. Caitlyn wanted Jakob, and by the size of that bulge in his flight suit, he wanted her just as much. She could afford to take the time to satisfy that need before she abandoned him again.

As if sensing Caitlyn’s surrender, Jakob scooped her up in his arms, striding through the crowd on the automated walkway. The tavern just beyond had private rooms available. It looked like that was where they were heading, which suited her just fine. Caitlyn wasn’t sure if she’d be able to make it all the way back to his ship without doing something deliciously naughty.

Jessup Halliday felt… old. Far older than his thirty-six years.

The entry to Club Endless was still timeless black and chrome and the hostess who took his membership card was young and sleek in a black sequined sheath and heels. Her hose even had seams up the back, marching in a straight line. Perfect in every way.

He was a founding member of Club Endless, and while it had changed with the times, it was as amazing as it had been when it first opened, while managing to stay current.

So why was he feeling… jaded?

He sighed. Maybe he needed to let his membership go dormant for a while. Write it off as a contribution or something. Take a long vacation in Italy. He loved Rome. Or maybe the coast.

Mmm. Italy. Yes, that was just the ticket.

He knew he’d hit on the perfect idea after the hostess slid his membership card, then headed for the dining room.

“Good evening, Master Halliday.” The server, one of his favorites, led him to a table. “Italian tonight.”

“Yum. Northern or Southern?”

“You have several choices. Shall I tell you, or would you prefer to read the menu?” Kane held out his chair.

“Oh, I think you should tell me. I do love your voice.”

Kane blinked, then beamed at him. “Let me get your water, and I’ll be pleased to recite them.”

It amazed Jess, really, how little it took to make people happy. He needed to remember that, and stop wallowing in his ennui.

Kane was back in a flash, laying out his water and silverware, which was all polished impeccably. “There now. Are you ready, Sir?”

“I am.” He sat back, watching Kane’s mouth as he spoke,

“Very good. For primi, we have risotto al funghi, polenta with caramelized fennel and onions, or cacio e pepe. Do you need any ingredient lists?”

“Mmm, no. They all sound lovely.”

“They all smell amazing.” Kane chuckled. “For secondi, we have veal saltimbocca, bistecca Fiorentina, or baccala alla vicentina, served with an arugula salad and garlic toasts.”

So, rice with mushrooms, corn grits with fennel, or pasta with oil and pepper. Normally didn’t indulge in veal, so it was the steak or the salted cod cooked with milk and anchovies… Hmm. “I’ll have the risotto and the baccala, I think.”

“Brave! I haven’t been able to make myself try the fish.”

He tilted his head, almost certain he was being flirted with, which was new from Kane. “You’ll have to try mine.”

“Oh!” Kane blushed. “Thank you, Sir. Let me get that order in for you. Do you care for soup or grissini?”

“The breadsticks, please. I went without lunch today.” Suddenly the club seemed shinier. Not new, and not better than Italy, but he did like when a beautiful boy batted eyelashes at him. He truly did.

“Wine? There’s a lovely Chianti, or a pinot grigio.”

“The pinot grigio, I think, for the fish.”

“Right away.”

He didn’t bother to ask about the wines. Their sommelier, Grant, was something of a genius.

Jess closed his eyes, listening to the gentle clink of flatware on plates, the soft music that never managed to make anyone raise their voices to be heard over it. The murmur of conversation ran over him like water, the tables arranged so no voice ever carried too far or intruded on another table.

It was damnably lonely.

“Jess! Hey, buddy. Mind if I sit?” Deacon Calhoun stood next to his table when he opened his eyes, the big Dom looking very snazzy in gray slacks and a blue silk shirt.

“Not at all.” He liked Deacon very much. “No Geoff tonight?”

“He’s preparing for a scene. We’re giving a spanking demo tonight.”

“Ah. No dinner for him.”

“Exactly. He’s having some quiet time and some broth, but I want some red meat, I think.”

“By all means, then. I hear there’s steak Florentine.”

Deacon sank into a chair. “What little bird told you that?”

“Kane is on tonight.”

Head tilting, Deacon stared at him for long seconds. “Have you taken him as a lover recently?”

“What? No. No, in fact I was thinking of taking a hiatus, maybe a vacation. Paris. Rome. I feel… worn.”

“Oh.” Deacon sat back. “I’m sorry. Something about your expression when you mentioned Kane…”

“Master Deacon. How are you this evening?” Kane handed Deacon a menu. “Here are the specials tonight. May I bring you some water?”

“Please.” Deacon smiled at Kane, and was given a gentle curl of lips in return.

Huh. Maybe he was getting flirted with. Kane certainly didn’t offer to read the menu to Deacon.

“Be right back.” Kane gave him a smile that was completely different, and Jess couldn’t help but feel it deep in his belly.

He’d been so… disinterested in everything, and he couldn’t have imagined it would be someone so familiar to him who might spark that bit of desire. Not that Kane wasn’t lovely. He drew glances with his silver gilt hair and gray eyes, his form lithe, almost delicate. Men, and probably women, would write poetry about such a beautiful boy.

“You know he’s between Masters, right?”

Excerpt –

I dropped the towel and reached for my panties.

“You’ve lost weight.”

I screamed and grabbed my tee, bringing it up to cover me. My eyes darted to the bed where the voice had come from, finding Demon sitting up against the headboard with his long legs crossed at the ankles. Relief and anger vied for first place in my emotions, but anger won out.

“What the fuck, Demon?! What are you doing here? How did you get in?” I watched him like a hawk as he swung his legs over the side of the bed and rose to his feet. A few short steps and he was stopping in front of me. I forced myself to hold his sharp, assessing gaze.

His eyes dropped down the front of me, burning me with their intensity. “Get dressed. You’re going with me.”

His arrogance fueled my anger. “No. I’m not.” I so wanted to slip into my tee, feeling exposed in spite of the fact that I was holding the shirt against my body. He’d seen me naked before, but this situation felt far more intimate than when he’d watched as I’d tried to wash Roland off of me. His eyes hadn’t held that predatory, hungry look like they were now.

He took a threatening step closer. I took a step back, coming up against my dresser. I caught my breath, feeling a rush of heat envelop me. I did not want Demon; I didn’t want him to touch me. I hated him.

He leaned down close to my face.

“I caught you with our enemies, bitch. Considering the trouble we’ve had and the fact that you conveniently left the club right before all that shit went down, you look guilty as fuck.”

“You’re crazy!” I hissed. “My leaving had nothing to do with what happened at the clubhouse, or with your brothers. As for finding me with your enemies, they took me, asshole. One of those cages was mine!” I was trembling with emotion.

Something flickered in his eyes. “That may be, but there’s still too many unanswered questions right now. Until I get to the fucking truth you’ll be a guest of Desert Rebels.”

“Fuck you, Demon! Get out!”

“Maybe if you hadn’t run, I wouldn’t be here now,” he growled, so close to me I could feel his breath against my face.

“How’s Elijah doing?” Narissa asked.

Sadie looked up from her meal and tried to hide her smile. The last year had been a whirlwind. Her relationship with her werewolf lover had been rocky at first, but it had evened out as they both got to know one another, and their boundaries were set on how far she could go. “It’s good.”

“Good. You look happier than I’ve seen you in a long time.”

“I wasn’t the one who disappeared for six months.”

“Didn’t have a choice. There was some upheaval in the Fairy realm. Time runs differently there. I needed to get things back in order.”

“Everything okay over there?” Sadie asked. Now she knew her friend was a fairy, she could ask her all kinds of questions. For years, Narissa had kept her true self a mystery. When they’d met in college, she’d introduced herself as Melissa.

“Nothing for you to worry about. I’m not sure even why they called me back since they don’t like I’m of mixed blood.”

“It had to have been important. Want to talk about it? We’ve always shared everything.”

Narissa poked at her food. “I know. I never told you everything before because I didn’t know how you’d deal with it.”

“I can deal with it. I’m dating the werewolf who killed my fiancé. So spill.”

“Most fairies don’t exist in this realm. We broke from the humans long ago. Those who do — we keep ourselves closed off. I’m not the only shifter among the fae. It seems a couple of them have gone missing. They thought I might know where they were.”

“Did you find them?”

Her friend pushed her plate away and a look of disgust soured her expression. “We found parts of them. They were dissected. They had the stench of humans. The fae don’t think it’s an isolated incident.”

“That’s horrible.”

“Indeed. Enough about me, I didn’t come to talk to get you down. I’ve been trying to get in touch with you, but it’s crazy. New job. New place. I told you my protection would bring you good things.”

“Yeah, you did. It makes Elijah jealous. It’s kinda funny to watch when we’re out and random men come up to me.”

“Wolves are protective of their mates, but you haven’t let him make you furry yet.”

She sipped her wine and glanced at the calendar. Elijah was out of town until after the full moon. “I’m not there yet.”

“When do you think you’ll get there? He’s not going to let you stay human forever. Wolves have a long lifespan.”

She held up her hand to silence Narissa. “I know. We’ve already discussed it.”

“Do you have an idea when you might let him turn you?”

“Will it be hindered by your mark?”

“Not at all, it might make you stick out a little bit more. I can’t take it back. Besides, I want to be sure to throw you an epic party when you get all hairy. Then we can hunt together and I don’t have to be so dainty with you.”

“I’m sure you’ll be happy about that.”

“I’m happy that you’re happy. I mean it. You’re working for a company that’s mostly shifters.”

“Yeah. They shut down for the full moon so it makes it better.”

“What does Elijah say about you working?”

“Like he can control me.”

Narissa gave her a hug and kissed her on the cheek. “Make sure you keep doing that because once he thinks he can bend you to his will as an alpha, he won’t stop.”

Sadie returned the hug. “Don’t worry about that. He knows that I’m not going to bow down to him in any form.”

A plant rustled next to them and a tall man stepped out from behind it. The texture of his skin appeared to be a blend of bark and flesh. He leaned in and said something to Narissa. She paled.

“Shit. I gotta run. Not sure how long I’m going to be. Gotta go back to Fairy. You two should use my place. Bye, hun.” Narissa waved and popped out, leaving a faint trail of glitter.

Sadie cleaned up and sat down on the sofa, wishing Elijah were with her. He had taken to working from home with her. When it came to the pack, he rarely discussed that part of his life. Her decision not to become a wolf hampered their relationship. Sometimes she felt like the dirty secret he kept hidden in the closet. She glanced at the moon and felt the pull of it herself. Being with him, she had begun to understand the power it had over the shifters.

Maybe I am ready. They both knew it was coming and a condition of their relationship. It always surprised him she hadn’t already turned from the two attacks she had already endured. First, Elijah attacking her two years ago when he killed her fiancé, Greyson, and ate him. He had tackled her and clawed her back. He claimed the wolf realized she was his mate then, but he didn’t know it until later. The second time she had been mauled by a wolf in another pack, but Elijah rescued her.

His wolf grew more insistent that it wanted her to join him. Sadie loved him beyond measure. It didn’t matter he was a billionaire CEO of a large company or controlled the largest pack in five states. All she wanted was him. However, each time during their lovemaking, her fear that he would bite her arose. The strain had started to show on their relationship, forcing a distance between them. Tonight he and the pack would all be gathered at the resort. Sadie had never been happier except for the growing tension between her and Elijah. He wasn’t about to let her go, and she loved him too much to lose him.

At the very heart of the matter, she was afraid. Afraid she would become a bloodthirsty beast that wanted to feast on innocents. She didn’t want that to be her. She couldn’t imagine bringing the fear and the hurt to someone the way it had happened to her losing Greyson. Her fiancé would want her to be happy. Sadie didn’t know if he would understand shape shifters and fairies. He would encourage her to take charge of her life and not live in fear. The way he always did. She’d been putting the decision off for so long, it had become the ugly beast in the room. Her stomach tightened in anticipation. Sadie grabbed a bag and threw some things inside it. She couldn’t wait to see the look on Elijah’s face when she got to the resort. Her resolve tightened.

There wasn’t any going back.

Vonn stared out at the throng of dancers and sighed. The ice in his drink had melted. Christ, he was bored. A man only turned twenty-one once, and he refused to spend this token year in college. He also refused to spend it alone. Let his brother Jax do the college thing. He had other ideas. He’d party now and work later.

A blonde passed by and winked. She might be good for the evening, but she wasn’t his type.

“Vonn Jordan, just the asshole I wanted to see.” Larry Slater strode up to him. “I hear your family has a new venture.”

“We have lots of ventures,” Vonn said. Jesus. It wasn’t his job to keep up on what the family did and when. “Why?”

“I never would’ve thought your family would’ve gotten in on human trafficking.” Larry crooked his brow. “Is that right?”

What? Yes, the Jordans played fast and loose with the law. Yes, they tended to shoot and pay their way out of trouble. But human trafficking? He knew Dash better than that. Ever since Dash rescued his now-wife, Christy, from being pimped at the club, Dash made it his point to rescue others. He wouldn’t get into human trafficking.

“Well?”

“Where did you get this info?” He doubted it was from his brother.

“Channels,” Larry snapped.

“And what details are these channels giving you?” Vonn asked.

“Jesus. Stuff. Girls,” Larry said. “You’re buying and selling them to the highest bidder. Bondage shit, sexy toys, that sort of bullshit. Whatever the buyer wants to do with them.”

“I see.” What a nice answer. What a jackass. He had to talk to Dash. If his brother was involved in this — which he doubted — then they needed to stop. If they weren’t involved, then Dash needed to know the family name was being used. He’d also want to step in and stop the operation. He’d shut them the fuck down. No one deserved to be sold for anything.

“Well? I want in,” Larry said. “Girls can bring top dollar.”

Asshat. “I need to confer with the family. We’re rather picky about who we involve.”

“Tell your brother I would love to be involved. I’m in need of new, lucrative ventures.” Larry grinned, and his eyes narrowed. “Besides, you owe me.”

“I do?” He didn’t remember owing Larry anything.

“Yeah, you do. I got your ass into this club,” Larry said. “Without me, you’d be nothing on the social scene.”

He disagreed, but whatever. “I have to speak with my brother. I don’t run the family enterprises.” He never did and never wanted to. Dash would end up in a premature grave like their father if he wasn’t careful. He trusted his brother wasn’t doing something so shitty as human trafficking. It wasn’t possible.

“I expect to hear something.” Larry pointed at him. “I know where you live.”

So does everyone else. The Jordan family compound was practically a landmark in Shaker. “Uh-huh.”

“I’m watching.”

I’m sure. He nodded, then abandoned his drink on a nearby table. One of his two bodyguards followed him to the private overlook within the club. He could see everything and not be seen. He whipped out his phone. He needed to speak to Dash.

“Yes?” Dash asked when he answered the call. “You’ve been MIA. Care to tell me where you are?”

“In deep shit,” Vonn said. “I know where I am. I’m in Florida.”

“Funny. That’s a long way from Ohio State.”

“Whatever,” Vonn said. “I don’t need a lecture.”

“You’ll get one. I’ve got your credit card statement. If you run up one more bar tab, I’ll come to Florida and kick your ass.”

“I know. I went overboard. Jesus, Dash. This is important.” He leaned against the wall and lowered his voice. “Are you involved in human trafficking?”

“What the hell? No,” Dash said. “Christ.”

“You’re sure?”

“We concocted a bullshit story about selling girls to get Clint and Ronan’s girl free from a strip club. But I wouldn’t touch real trafficking. Christ. That’s barbaric,” Dash said.

“Good.”

“Why?”

“Your name is being used in connection with a trafficking ring. Larry Slater wants in,” Vonn said.

“If I were — which I’m not — the last person I’d involve would be Larry,” Dash said. “The pissant.”

“He wants details.”

“Tell him to fuck off.”

“Gladly,” Vonn said. “I’m going to the police. We can’t get mixed up in this.”

“Yeah. I’m not wild about the involvement of the law, but we’re clean,” Dash said. “Take your men and investigate. Try to catch wind of who is using our name, then I’ll destroy him.”

“Will do.” Right away.

“Oh, and tell Larry he’s in. Then let the cops have him.”

“Will do that, too.” He laughed. “Thanks. Bye, Dash.”

“Come home. Ma misses you, and you have an entire family to meet.”

“Later.” But he would. He missed the craziness of the Jordan family. His brothers were settling down, and he’d fucked around. Did the girls have families? Did they miss them? Were the girls being treated well? He’d bet they wanted to go home. “I’m worried these girls are being abused.”

“Most likely they are. I’ve got Jon and Kurtis on the way now. Get information and keep me in the loop. I’ve alerted the police and FBI. This isn’t going to go without anyone’s notice,” Dash said. “We’ll get ‘em.”

The problem is she doesn’t know whether she should make Echo Springs her home, or if this town is just a stopover point in her life’s trajectory. And she doesn’t want to tell Nate that she might not be sticking around—even though she should because it’s the right thing to do, the honest thing—because then all the scintillatingly hot kisses with the Sheriff will come to an abrupt halt.
