BOOK REVIEW: Building a Family by M.L. Uberti #contemporaryromance #agegap @MLUberti_writer

Jamie knows to Daniel she’s just the babysitter for his brother’s children. She’s too young, too inexperienced, too shy for him. But she feels safe when she’s with him, and she wishes they could have more.

Daniel knows he’s too old, too rough, and far too wary for a beautiful young woman like Jamie. She should run away from him and what he wants and needs from her.

Unless they’re both wrong.

Available at Changeling Press

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

Tension. Angst. And an alpha-hole… Get ready to one-click this bad boy!

I’ll admit there were times — okay, A LOT of times — I wanted to bash Daniel over the head. He was so busy trying to run from his feelings, he didn’t stop to consider how his actions destroyed Jamie each and every time.

Jamie was sweet, loving, and a little too angelic – except when it came to Daniel. She couldn’t resist him, and the two of them nearly set the sheets on fire! But Jamie wants more than steamy nights with Daniel.

So. Much. Drama. But in an awesome way. Building a Family will make you scream, make you cry, and most importantly, it will make you beg for more. Two thumbs up… Five stars… And zero rotten tomatoes for this delightful read.

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

Lauren Alsten’s Sidewiped is laugh-out-loud funny!

I admit it, the cover got me. As a cat lover, one look at the two black cats, and I had to click to find out more. And a sex streamer? Yep, that lured me in for sure. So I shamelessly snagged an ARC of this delightful RomCom that will have you laughing at times and wanting to cry at others.

Tara is a strong, vibrant woman who thinks she’s finally ready to settle down. Assuming she can find the right man. Except she’s going about it all wrong. Using a dating app is getting her nowhere. With one loser after another showing up for her dates, she’s starting to think she may end up alone.

Jared has adored Tara since he hit puberty and realized girls aren’t so icky after all. And now that he’s all grown up, he can think of nothing he wants more than to spend time with her. Too bad she still sees him as a kid – or at least she claims that’s the case. When the two end up in bed – multiple times – Jared knows he’s found the woman he wants to keep forever.

The verbal sparring between these two is enough to keep you on your toes. They’re so cute together, even if Tara is a stubborn mule and refuses to admit she likes Jared. The characters were well-developed, and the humor is sprinkled throughout. I seriously hope Tara’s sister and Jared’s brother get a book. Those two are in some serious denial about their feelings!

Looking for a quick, feel-good read? Sideswiped will have you laughing, crying, and falling in love right alongside the characters.

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

Compassion Fatigue is an emotion-charged, page-turning, quick-yet-satisfying read.

For lovers of LGBT fiction, this book has a diverse group of characters from male/male couples, to female/female couples, bisexual characters, and even a non-binary teen. It’s a story about acceptance, not only of yourself but others, and as such has scenes that may trigger some readers. The author handled the emotional pain of the characters, and the hate of the close-minded people around them, with a style that was both impactful and respectful.

Peter has fought the fact he’s bisexual even since his ex-wife threw him out. Not only did the woman who’d claimed she’d love him forever turn her back on Peter, but there were those in the LGBTQ community who did the same. He’s left feeling conflicted and struggles with self-loathing. Convinced no one will ever accept him, in either world, he battles loneliness and tries to keep people at arm’s length.

Dr. Abe Yoshida was a beautifully written character. His inner struggle not only over people being unaccepting of his being gay but also the hateful comments toward Asians as the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread, left a broken man who fought every day not to give in the demons whispering in his head.

Peter and Abe were clearly meant for one another, even though both themselves and others kept throwing obstacles in their way. Their moments together were sweet and at times more than a little steamy. Once I started reading their story, I couldn’t stop. I needed to see how it ended.

Compassion Fatigue will put you through the emotional wringer but will give you the satisfying ending we all crave when reading a romance.

MY REVIEW – 4 stars

Are you debating whether or not to read Nanny for the Alien Lord? Did you see the title and alternate between a hum-drum “not another nanny/alien book” and an excited “ooohh, another nanny/alien book!” … Let me set your mind at ease. Nanny for the Alien Lord is a bit cliched in the Nanny/Rich Alien scheme of things, but it offers so much more. From Belle’s insistence on taking care of her sister, to her stubborn pride when it comes to accepting help, and even her inability to be honest with herself over her feelings for her sexy alien boss, there’s enough drama to keep you flipping the pages. And did I mention the steamy sex? Because there’s quite a bit of that too.

The opening chapter didn’t immediately hook me, but by the end of chapter two, I needed to know what happened next. Belle was such a strong character, even when faced with her weaknesses, that I admired her greatly. The way Tauas helped care for not only Belle, but her sister as well, was heartwarming. He didn’t try to hold Belle back, but wanted to lift her up. Even more, he wanted her in his life — and as far more than the nanny.

The sparks between Tauas and Belle were immediate. But for every bit as much as Belle fell in love with Tauas, she loved his daughter just as much.

Nanny for the Alien Lord is a sexy, heartwarming, page-turning read that will leave you smiling and wishing there was more.

BOOK REVIEW: Memento Monstrum by Jochen Til #childrensfiction #fantasy #NetGalley

A biting memoir with an over the top package!

This is your warning!

This book contains Count Dracula’s memoirs. And as you would expect, there are plenty of hideous creatures in it—giant yetis, insidious werewolves, slimy fish monsters—maybe you shouldn’t read it!

You might learn things you didn’t know about monsters before. Hair-raising things that make these monsters appear . . .friendly . . .even downright human. So, take my advice. Put the book down and move on before you get caught in its clutches.

Sincerely, Van Helsing

PS-But if you do read this book, you will be enchanted by the incredibly imaginative full-color illustrations through out, the fabulously appealing cover, and the original wit captured within.

Available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble

BOOK REVIEW – 4 stars!

Such a cute, fun book! Full of positive messages and a bit of humor, kids will enjoy reading aboud Dracula’s life as he tells the stories to his grandchildren. I enjoyed the unique spin on VanHelsing, and his ineptitude in killing Dracula. The artwork was an added bonus and very well done!

My Review – 4 Stars

I’ve been reading this series since book one and each one leaves me eager to find out more. Halie thought she had time to choose between following her vampire mother into the night, or choosing the path of her werewolf father. It never occurred to her she’d end up a hybrid, and in a world of trouble. For those who have been waiting to see if Halie picks Ciaran or Neil, this just put her in the perfect position of being with both of them! Can’t wait to see what happens next…

Tagline: Turning the big four-five isn’t a problem for Everly Popa—it’s everything else in her life that’s gone to hell in a handbasket.

Book Description:

It’s bad enough that Everly’s drug-selling husband is in jail and her adult daughter blames her for the situation. But now the FBI wants her to turn witness, while her husband’s criminal friends want to keep her permanently silent. With no other safe haven, Everly returns to her hometown. A place she hasn’t visited in twenty-seven years. And didn’t leave under the best of circumstances.

It’s not that Everly has a problem with her hometown, exactly, but since it sits next to Hell’s Gate, there’s bound to be a few issues. Like the archaic rules set by the angels who run the town. Or the fact that the townsfolk feel Everly abandoned her duties as one of the members of the town’s founding families. But between celestial politics or getting gunned down by a drug cartel, Everly decides to chance finding sanctuary back home.

After a little good-versus-evil stunt at the town’s border, Everly is let back in and for the first five minutes, things are great. Everly’s mom hasn’t started nagging and she has a whole bottle of wine to herself. But after minute six, all hell breaks loose. Everly gets bitten by a hellhound, faints in front of her hot-and-single old high school boyfriend, and accidentally becomes the town’s Gatekeeper to Hell.  A job she never wanted, isn’t trained for, and can’t shake off like gum stuck to her shoe. And as much as she’s flipping out, the celestial ruling body aren’t too pleased about it either.

Before Everly can take a deep breath and figure a way out of this mess, an angel gets killed, humans go missing and the town shuts its magical borders. Now Everly is trapped inside with dying angels, rampaging demons, and a witch with a murderous agenda. Plus, an archangel and his army surround the city and are itching to contain the town’s problems with a heaven-sent big boom. The only way out is for Everly to learn how to use her newly acquired Gatekeeper powers. But with no handbook provided, there’s a snowball’s chance in hell she’ll figure it out in time.

Excerpt CHAPTER ONE

When all the good choices have disappeared faster than kids at chore
time
If eighteen was the age of exciting self-discovery, then forty-five was the
weary age of having zero shits left to give.

What did it matter if my husband of twenty years was rotting in federal
jail? And that our chiropractic clinic had gone belly up, leaving me jobless?
Or that my friends had turned from “we’ll help hide a body” to “we’ve got your
back until the reporters hit our lawn?” I also didn’t care that the DEA had
frozen our joint bank accounts and seized our assets. I never liked that house
anyway.

Homeless. Jobless. Friendless.

Add in a pickup truck, beer, and an old dog and it would be the most
pathetic country song played on the tiniest fiddle ever. I gritted my teeth as
the wipers shrieked across the windshield. Nothing like driving through a
late-October downpour to add to your misery, and the constantly patched roads
in this part of Central Texas didn’t handle rain well.

My phone rang with its cheerful tone that I kept forgetting to change.
Sadie’s name lit up on the display, and I almost knocked it off the dashboard
holder while hitting the speaker button.

“Sadie? Is everything okay? How’s Laney?” I really hoped the trembling
in my voice wasn’t audible. My daughter hadn’t spoken to me in two months,
refusing to answer my calls or respond to my texts. Her girlfriend had even
gone so far as to block me on her social media.

“Mom? Where are you? God, this connection sucks.” Her voice had a
recognizable anxious edge to it. I wanted to ask if she was taking her meds,
but at twenty-one Sadie hated coddling. “Someone needs to talk to you.”

“What?” I eased onto the shoulder of the road, then placed the truck
into park. “Who?”

“Mrs. Collins? Uh, Everly Collins? This is Sam Duncan, your husband’s
attorney? We really must discuss your husband’s case.”

I glanced at the clock on my dash: 10:33 p.m. Duncan was raking in some
serious OT.

“What the hell are you doing with my daughter?”

“Mrs. Collins?” He lowered his voice. “I know you’ve been advised not
to speak with me. But you really need to before certain other people do. We can
meet anywhere you want.”

“Listen to me, you scum licker. Tell my husband and his thug buddies to
leave my kid out of their mess. I’m not afraid of their flaccid threats and
won’t be intimidated.” I slapped at the phone to turn it off, sending it
careening to the passenger floorboard, out of reach and therefore away from
temptation.

I didn’t have the money to replace the stupid thing, but the desire to
take out my frustration on the helpless and innocent electronic device was strong.

Part of me wanted to turn the vehicle around, race to Sadie’s apartment
in Austin, and kick the crap out of that attorney. But I knew the truth. Sadie
had taken her dad’s side and was angry I’d snitched on him. She would do
whatever she could to get him out of trouble. What was a little money
laundering for drug dealers, after all? She might have my dark hair and eyes,
but unfortunately, she inherited her father’s defective moral compass.

A lesson for all the kiddies: choose the sperm donor
for your progeny well.

BOOK REVIEW: Mine in Hell (The Rejected Mate #2) by G. Bailey and Scarlett Snow #reverseharem @gbaileyauthor

Now the world knows who I am.

I’m the first female alpha in history and every pack leader out there wants to claim me as their mate.
Including the Stormfire alpha who sent my life into a spiral after rejecting me.
While he and the others fight for the right to possess me, a new Demon Trial is created in honor of the Crescent Mother, and this time I’m the prize.
Or so they all believe.
I’ll stop at nothing to reclaim my freedom even if it means entering the trials myself, where the only way out is death and ruin. But I don’t plan on dying.
I plan on winning.

I’m going to make each of the alphas pay for what they did to me.

18+ Dark reverse harem romance full with a sassy and sarcastic heroine who finds her match.

Get it at Amazon

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

I recently discovered Ms. Bailey’s books, and I think I’m hooked. Reverse harem is quickly becoming my new favorite genre, and while I typically dislike cliffhangers, I don’t mind it so much with fantasy books.

Lilith is still fighting for her life, for revenge, and for love. The three men she’s fallen for only make her stronger and more determined as one enemy after another tries to tear them apart and destroy the world’s first alpha female. There’s nothing she won’t do to take down the monsters and free those under their influence. Lilith is furious and she’s ready to protect the innocent.

Full of unexpected twists, and more than a little heat, Mine in Hell is a page-turning read I couldn’t put down. Love. Danger. Friendship… and so much more. I hope you’re ready for one hell of a ride (pun intended).

BOOK REVIEW: Upon Us by Blakely Chorpenning #dystopian #bookreview @bchorpenning

What if the apocalypse was manufactured to save mankind?

Twenty-five years have passed in a self-imposed darkness known as the New Beginning. While the natural planet has flourished, crops are suddenly dying and the sickness—a zombie-like plague—is ravishing the human population.

I live on the fringe of what’s left of civilization, helping where I can—from a distance. This is the only world I’ve ever known and I plan to save it.

I’ve been entrusted by the clans to remedy the food shortage. Breaking rules is nothing new, but there’s a catch. I need a villager to carry out my plan.

Ren is not the captive I had hoped for. He’s shockingly candid. A wildcard with a fatal flaw. And he remembers the world before it stopped. The longer we spend together, the more I’m drawn into his entitled way of life. To him. But he may harbor more secrets than I do.

Ren is not who he seems.

Then again, neither am I.

During a time of deception and conspiracies, love thrives where a world chose to die.

“Two worlds collide to save hope for the future. This book has so much love and passion to make page 1 as enthralling as page 200.” ~Amazon Review

MY REVIEW – 4 stars

I don’t often read dystopian books, but I’ve enjoyed other books by this author and decided to dive in.

I found the dystopian world intriguing, especially how it came about. There were interesting twists that kept me on my toes. I detest spoilers so if you want to know more, you’ll have to read the book.

Jolee’s character brought hope to those around her, even before the secrets of her past were revealed. She had an innate kindness felt by all. I thoroughly enjoyed her character.

Ren left me feeling conflicted. He wasn’t a bad person, but the first part of the book didn’t show his inner depths, so he came across as superficial and shallow. By the end, I was rooting for him and Jolee to be together.

The secondary characters rounded out this world quite well, adding depth. I only wish we could have seen more of them at the end of the book instead of hearing about them through Ren.

Overall, Upon Us was an entertaining story. I did feel the romance aspect was a bit abrupt, even though Ren and Jolee make a great couple. It felt like they went from enemies, to semi-friends, to lovers in the blink of an eye.

MY REVIEW – 4 stars

Van Helsing vs Dracula’s Daughter has amazing artwork and a storyline with enough twists to keep you entertained. While I enjoyed the unique additions to the Dracula/Van Helsing story, there were times I felt like I was missing something. I hadn’t read the other comics in this universe, so if you’re trying to read this as a stand-alone, be advised there are bits and pieces that are further explained elsewhere. All in all, it was a great graphic novel and I definitely want to read more.
