Interview with author Andi Rhodes #romanticsuspense #authorinterview

I’m so excited to have Andi Rhodes on the blog today! If you aren’t familiar with her books, you definitely need to check them out – especially if you enjoy romances about bikers! Steamy, sexy stories that will keep you turning the pages…

BOOKS+COFFEE: How long have you been writing, and how long did it take before your first book was published?

ANDI: I’ve been writing for about 3 years and published my first book in January 2020 so there was about a year and a half between when I started and when I published.

BOOKS+COFFEE: Do you have a routine you follow when you’re working on a book? A certain time of day when you write, or a snack you keep nearby?

ANDI: I’ve learned that I am more productive when I write in the morning before doing anything else. I typically have music on in the background but every once in a while, I’ll put Netflix on.  I don’t always have snacks nearby but when I do, it’s peanut butter M&Ms.

BOOKS+COFFEE: What is the scariest thing you face as a writer? How do you handle it?

ANDI: There are a few things that scare me… commas (lol), running out of ideas, ads. But the thing that scares me the most is one of my books not being good. As authors, we put our heart and soul, our blood, sweat, and tears into every story. We give so much and the idea that it still may not be enough is scary as hell.  I’ve come a long way as far as that goes though. In the beginning, I used to agonize over every word in every review. I didn’t have a very thick skin. One or Two star reviews would trigger the tears and self-doubt. Don’t get me wrong, I still want readers to love my books but I don’t agonize over as much. My confidence in my ability to tell a story has gotten better. And I’ve learned that I can’t please 100% of the readers 100% of the time.  That’s just not how it works.

BOOKS+COFFEE: What do you think is the most important thing to remember when following your dreams?

ANDI: You can’t always get to the top on your own. Especially with self-publishing, despite what the words say. Aside from writing books that make readers feel something or help them escape reality for a little bit, my dream is to hit a bestseller list.  I’m not going to get there on my own. I’ve got a tribe behind me. I’ve got fellow authors who encourage me, friends, family, my husband, designers, an editor, my ARC team, and of course, my readers. None of this would be possible without them. So my advice is to find your tribe and love them hard. Appreciate them and support them in return. Don’t try to do it all by yourself.

Now, let’s talk a little about your current book…

What’s the title of your current release and is it part of a series?

Greaser and it’s the 4th Soulless Kings MC book

Who published Greaser?

It comes out Sept. 16th and I’m publishing it under my publishing imprint, Blue Journey Publishing. I publish all of my books.

Your cover looks amazing. Do you know who the artist is?

Thank you! Of course I know. Amanda Walker designed the cover and she did an amazing job.

Was there something in particular that inspired you to write this story?

I feel like the answer to this should be yes but it’s not. There wasn’t anything in particular that inspired the story other than I knew when Nicole Cypher and I started this series, there were certain characters that would get their own story. I’ve shifted to writing the stories on my own but I still want to give those characters a voice.

If there’s one thing a reader will take away from this story, what do you hope it is?

That you don’t always know what someone’s struggle is, even if you think you do. We all have a past, a story we may not share with those in our lives. I think people are really good at putting on a smile to cover up the pain (physical or emotional). I want people to sit back and remember to not assume you know how someone feels or what they’re thinking. And I want readers to remember that it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to have to rely on others to prop you up when you can’t stand on your own.

Any funny stories you can share about writing this book, or something that sparked the idea for it?

The story of Greaser and Trinity was sparked by Trainwreck, a prospect in the club. I LOVE Trainwreck and as each book has been written, that particular character has been written in a way that his story is a guarantee (wink, wink). To me, he’s hilarious, and I wanted to capitalize on that because so far, readers have seen him as this goofball who has a loyal streak a mile wide and who will do whatever he is told for the club. He’s gonna make a badass patched member someday and Greaser and Trinity’s story brings more depth to him. Because Trinity is Trainwreck’s twin. And NO ONE knew about her. Don’t worry, this book isn’t about Trainwreck but he plays a bigger role than he has in previous books and honestly, if it wasn’t for him, Greaser and Trinity wouldn’t have a story to tell.

Greaser…

The Soulless Kings are my family, my life. I would die for them, bleed for them, kill for them. Patched members, prospects, blood relatives… they all have my loyalty, no questions asked. What I won’t do is tolerate lies, no matter who they come from.

Until I catch a brother in one.

Danger shows up at our doorstep and I find myself reevaluating my boundaries. I don’t have a choice. It could mean the difference between life and death for the woman who’s done the impossible: risen from the dead.

Trinity…

People don’t come back from the dead. It’s impossible, yet it’s exactly what I’m doing. For twelve years, I ceased to exist. My family, my friends, the world thought I was gone forever. I was a statistic, a faceless number among millions. But I’m back and I need to be seen, to be heard, to be remembered.

My escape isn’t planned. It happens fast but I don’t look back. Not until I’m forced to. I manage to track down the one person who will recognize me, my twin. Looking at me should be like looking in a mirror. The problem is, his new family doesn’t know I exist and they don’t take kindly to lies or strangers.

And I represent both.

Data/Thorn (Bones MC) by Marteeka Karland #mcromance #romanticsuspense @marteekakarland

She doesn’t need an old man like me, but to keep her safe I’ll kill anyone who gets in my way.

Data (Bones MC 8)
Zora — I live a life of wealth and luxury. There isn’t anything I can’t have. Except my freedom. So I turned to the computer. And that’s where I met my match. When my life suddenly falls apart, Data’s the one to rescue me. But he’ll also be the one to rip my heart in two.

Data — I’m no good with people. I stick to my computers. When my online partner and friend ends up in trouble, there’s no way I’m letting her go it alone. But the girl is barely eighteen. She doesn’t need an old man like me. But I’ll rule her to make her mine. And kill anyone in my way to keep her safe.

Thorn (Salvation’s Bane MC 3)
Mariana — If it weren’t for bad luck… Yeah. That’s me. Stranded on the side of the road after my boyfriend threw me out. When a big, muscle-bound, tattooed biker pulled up and ordered me to “pop the hood” I was scared, but, God, the man was smoking hot!

Thorn — Yeah, I steamrolled my way into Ana’s life. But I wasn’t prepared for the call I got from the hospital or the sight of her broken body. I’m all about vengeance, and someone is going to pay for this. Because I might have gone and fallen in love with her.

WARNING (Spoiler Alert): Traumatic pregnancy loss and explicit violence which could be triggers for some readers. As always, expect a HEA with no cheating.

Excerpt from Data

One by one, the riders shut off the bikes but didn’t get off them. Only one man took off his helmet and approached the house, a horrible scowl on his bearded face. Zora quickly jumped up and went inside. She tried to close the door, but the man was on her already. He didn’t grab her but shoved his foot inside the door so she couldn’t shut it.

She squealed, shoving her weight against the door. Like that was going to help if the man really wanted in. She was so slight there wasn’t enough of her to deter him.

“Zora, stop,” he barked.

She was so shocked he knew her name, she obeyed. Then she blinked several times. “D?”

“Data,” he corrected. “And you are in so much trouble, you can’t even conceive.” As angry as he sounded, Zora thought he’d pull her outside, but he didn’t. He held open the screen door and stepped back so she could come back outside the house. When she didn’t readily comply, he raised an eyebrow. “I will carry you if you don’t come out on your own.”

She swallowed but did as he said. Why, she had no idea. Of all the ways she’d envisioned meeting her online friend, this wasn’t it. And what was with all the bikes? She’d also thought he was closer to her age. Sure, the remark about spending time with his daughter had registered, but she’d just assumed his daughter was a child. She hadn’t asked and he hadn’t volunteered, but when she’d imagined what he might look like, it was as a college guy. Maybe slightly older. The reality couldn’t have been further from the truth.

This man — Data — was in his forties, bearded, and heavily muscled. He towered over her. She was only five foot three, so she guessed he was at least six-three or -four. Looking at the men behind him on their bikes, talking amongst themselves, she noticed they glanced toward Zora and Data occasionally. They were all just as big and just as strong. Just as intimidating.

Date gestured for her to go back to her perch on the swing where she’d been before, and he took one of the chairs next to her. For long, long moments, he sat looking at her, his forearms resting on his thighs, fingers laced together.

“Um,” she cleared her throat. “You, uh, want some tea? I’ve got soda, too.”
Nothing.

“I’d offer beer, but I don’t –”

“Why the fuck didn’t you do what I told you to?” He didn’t raise his voice, but the message was the same. Data wasn’t happy with her. At fucking all.

“Where’s your phone?”

“I left it at back at Gordon’s house,” she squeaked.

“And the burner I told you to buy? You know, the one you were supposed to use to text me with your location so I knew where you were and had a way to contact you?”

“I forgot it, OK?” Her voice was firm and a little irritated. There. She’d found her spine. Finally. Mostly.

“Do you have your computer?”

“Yeah. But I’ve been so busy trying to get myself set up here, I haven’t been online.”

“Believe me, I’m fully aware. I’ve had our private chat open for days. I had the program set to notify my cell if you came online. My phone has been by my side or in my fuckin’ pocket constantly.” The more he talked, the louder he got, his anger obviously building. He didn’t shout at her, but his frustration with her was more than obvious. Finally, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath before continuing. “I was fuckin’ worried sick.”

She blinked several times. “What? Why would you worry about me? I can take care of myself.”

“I’m aware. Doesn’t change the fact I like knowin’ you’re good.” There was silence between them. An uncomfortable one where she fidgeted and he just stared at her, his expression unreadable but intense. “Did it ever occur to you I might care about your wellbeing?”

Of course. She got it now. Just like everyone else in her life, he worried about her abilities being taken away from him. And be Goddamned, it hurt. “I’m sure you could find any number of hackers willing and able to help when you need it,” she said, unable to keep the pain from her voice no matter how much she wanted to act like it didn’t bother her. “Hell, you’re much better than I ever thought about being. It’s not like I put you in a bind.”

He sat up straight. “What the fuck did you just say to me?”

She shrank back. This wasn’t her D. This man was scary. And an asshole, but she wasn’t saying that out loud. “I said it wasn’t like I put you in a bind.”

“Data!” One of the men called warningly from his bike in her driveway. “Simmer the fuck down, brother.” That was surprising, but not unwelcome.

Data scrubbed a hand over his face before stroking the front of his beard-covered chin with a couple of fingers. “Look,” he said. “Did it ever occur to you I might be worried about more than your abilities with a computer? Maybe I was concerned about my friend. Ever fuckin’ think of that?”

“I… Your… friend?”

“Yeah. My friend.” Data shoved himself out of the chair and held out his hand for her. “Come here, cutie.”

It was that nickname that made her stupid hand land in his and her body allow him to pull her to her feet. The next thing she knew, he’d wrapped her up in those strong arms and hugged her tightly. She was so much shorter than him, he just picked her straight up, her legs dangling in the air.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Erotic romance author by night, emergency room tech/clerk by day, Marteeka Karland works really hard to drive everyone in her life completely and totally nuts. She has been creating stories from her warped imagination since she was in the third grade. Her love of writing blossomed throughout her teenage years until it developed into the totally unorthodox and irreverent style her English teachers tried so hard to rid her of.

BOOK REVIEW: Red (Salvation’s Bane MC) by Marteeka Karland #mcromance #bookreview #romanticsuspense @marteekakarland

Rosanna: Salvation’s Bane’s been good to me — more of a family than I’ve ever had before. And I want that. But I’m not a kid anymore, and I know what I want. Red. I need him to see me as more than just another mechanic. No matter how good I am, working beside the man is never going to be enough. I’m going to break him down. Get under his skin, until he realizes I’m a grown-ass woman, and I know my mind.

And if that bitch of an ex of his doesn’t leave us alone, she’s the next thing I’m gonna break.

Red: I’m headed for a special hell. Rosanna knows her way around cars, I’ll give her that, and she looks sexy as hell with a wrench in her hands and a spot of grease on her nose, but she’s just a kid. I know she’s got a past she can’t or won’t talk about, and she may think she’s all grown up, but she’s younger than my son, Anthony. Pretty sure that makes me some kind of a pervert.

And now that Anthony’s the assistant DA, he’s got a bee up his ass to take me down. Be damned if I’ll let him take Rosanna with me. I should send her far away from me and this life, but one kiss is all it takes to pull me under. I could no more give her up than I could give up the air that I breathe. I’d kill to protect her. And from the looks of things, I may have to.

MY REVIEW – 5 stars!

Red is a steamy age-gap romance that will break your heart … then put it back together.

Red hasn’t had an easy life. With an ex who hates him, and a son who dislikes him just as much, he’s done his best to keep everyone at arm’s length, fearing it will put a target on their backs…. and for good reason. His ex is a piece of work and only out for herself. And his son has traveled down a dark path from which there may be no coming back …

Rosie is exactly what Red needs, if only he’d let himself love her. She’s sweet, sassy, and smart. But more than that, she’s head over heels for Red and knows no one else will be her “one”. Good thing she has a backbone of steel because she’ll need it if she plans to tame the biker of her dreams.

While Red’s story does touch on dark subjects, it’s not done in detail. More of a reason why certain things have to happen so you catch a glimpse of the darker side of what Salvation’s Bane is fighting but that’s it. The main focus is on Red’s battle with himself and his ex, and Rosie.

Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. Watching a big, tough guy like Red fall is always delightful. You know what they say… the bigger they are, the harder they fall … and boy does he fall for Rosie!

“Get the lead out, boys,” Red gruffed to the dozen or so men in the garage he owned. “We got less than forty-eight hours to deliver these two cars and I still need to go over them to make sure you fucks didn’t miss anything.”

“Go to hell, Red!”

“Like we ever miss anything, you motherfucker!”

“Fuck you.”

One guy just flipped him the bird without looking up from under the hood of the car he was working on.

“Lazy as you fuckers are, if I let it slide once, you’ll fuck me over the next time and it’s my ass in trouble with Thorn.” Red tried not to grin, but it was hard. He worked with good men and loved every one of them like a son. At least, he loved them like he wanted to love his own son. That ship had sailed, though.

“I can help if you need me.”

The groan came before Red could repress it. “No,” was all he said.

“But –”

“Said no, girl. Now get on with you.”

Her name was Rosanna Creamer, and the image her name presented just… stuck. Because, seriously, he could envision her creaming on his cock for hours and hours. Every day. Forever. She was also so young any thoughts he had about her were probably illegal. If not, they should be. He was forty-eight years old. Rosanna said she was twenty-three, but he had his doubts.

The disappointed look on her face got to him every time. He wanted to call her back and give her a job to do, but if he did, the kid would walk all over him.

“Fine. But I’m ten times better than any of those fuckers,” she muttered.

“No swearing.” He said it automatically, like he might scold a naughty child. The second he did, he winced.

“Fucking fine, motherfucker,” she shot back. There was venom in her voice, but Red didn’t mind. His head whipped around almost of its own accord to watch her stomp away. Because, really, she had an ass to make angels weep. When she hit this level of angry, she always flounced off with that little ass jiggling like his hand might make it jiggle if he’d smacked it. Sure enough… yeah. There she went. And just like that, his cock was at full attention.

“Fuck,” he muttered, rubbing his hand over his mouth.

“And don’t think I don’t know you’re looking at my ass,” she shot back over her shoulder. Then, just to torment him, she flashed him a cocky grin and bent over at the waist to pick up a wrench from the garage floor where some dumb fuck had left it.

He turned away from her. Had to. Otherwise, he’d have her bent over the hood of the GTO she was working on. Red’s garage was a legitimate business. They fixed and maintained cars of all kinds, from luxury to ordinary, beat-up Fords. It also fronted a chop shop and sold stolen cars overseas. Rosanna was a huge asset to him in so many ways. The girl could fix anything. She even had an affinity with the newer, high-end cars with sophisticated security systems.

The sound of her giggle snagged Red’s attention. She’d just been flirting with him, but now she was trying to ensnare Julio? What the fuck?

“Don’t the two of you have something to be doing beside playing hide the wiener?”

“Ain’t nothin’ more important than that,” Julio muttered.

“Nope,” Rosanna said at the same time. “Hide the wiener is the most important task I have. Though, poor Julio here isn’t allowed. His woman took his man card.”

Roars of laughter all over the garage.

“Then perhaps he should get away from you so he don’t get fuckin’ castrated. Can’t afford to be a man down now.”

She patted Julio on the shoulder. “Much as I adore Julio, he’s not the man for me.”

He wasn’t rising to the bait. If he did, he’d be hard all fucking day and masturbate all fucking night. He wasn’t going to ask…

“Well, just who is the fuckin’ man for you, little girl?”

“Oh, I imagine he’s someone a little older than Julio.” She winked at Red.

Every Goddamned time she said something like that, Red just had to open his big mouth. And every Goddamned time, she was more outrageous.

Fox (Hades Abyss MC) by Harley Wylde #romanticsuspense #agegap @HarleyW_Writer

Cover Art by Bryan Keller

Raven — I learned the hard way not to trust anyone. First the men who’d hurt me, and then my mother when she turned her back on me. I had no one. Was it any wonder I didn’t think I had a reason to keep living? A good Samaritan had other ideas, landing me in a psychiatric hospital. Too bad the guards were every bit as evil as those men I’d trusted.

I thought I’d die alone. Unwanted. Unloved. Forgotten. Until the Hades Abyss MC came to take me away. They claim my father sent them, except I’ve never met him. Don’t even know his name. I’d try to run, but what’s the point? Besides, there’s one man who makes me feel safe. Fox. It doesn’t matter that he’s older than me. When he holds me, I know nothing will ever hurt me again. I just didn’t count on losing my heart to him.

Fox — Breaker brought Hatchet’s daughter to the clubhouse, and the moment I looked into those vacant eyes, I knew she’d been badly broken. Some part of me wanted to fix her. Put the pieces back together. Watch her eyes light up and see her smile. She thinks she’s dirty, that no one will ever want her. She’s wrong. I want her. I even want the baby growing inside her.

Never thought I’d find the woman meant to be mine. Now that I’ve had Raven in my arms, chased away her nightmares, kissed her tears away, I know I can’t let her go. I’ll make her mine — the baby too — and I won’t let anyone stand in my way.

WARNING: Fox is part of the Hades Abyss MC series. Be warned there are adult situations and language, violence, darker themes that may trigger some readers like suicide and assault. Guaranteed Happily-Ever-After, no cheating, and no cliffhanger!

Breaker stumbled back, his chest heaving with every breath. Fury etched his features, until he turned and saw me watching. The change happened so suddenly. Instead of being angry, I could only see sorrow in his gaze. Breaker held out a hand to me, blood splattered across his fingers. He moved slowly, as if trying to coax a feral animal closer.

“I’m here to help you, Raven. Your dad sent me.”

I blinked and shook my head. My dad? I had never met him, nor did I even know his name. Mom hadn’t shared it with me. Whenever I’d asked, she’d become tight-lipped and looked like she’d been sucking on lemons. My dad couldn’t have sent this man. Wouldn’t have. Had he known about me, surely he’d have been here sooner. Unless he hadn’t cared.

Breaker stopped and dropped his hand. “I know I’m a stranger. Your dad is with another club. The Reckless Kings MC. He goes by Hatchet. He didn’t know about you until today. The second he found out where you were and that your mom hadn’t aborted you like she claimed, he asked my club to come get you. Will you please come with me?”

I glanced at the guard and saw the hatred in his eyes when he looked at me. If I stayed, things would get worse. Even if I didn’t know Breaker, he couldn’t hurt me more. Unless he killed me, but death would only be a relief at this point. The way he’d attacked the guard led me to believe he wouldn’t force himself on me.

I reached out and took his hand, letting him pull me from the room. The nurse came running down the hall, Guard Larson on her heels. Whatever he saw in Breaker’s face made him pause.

“You can’t just leave with a patient,” Guard Larson said.

“The one your buddy was raping?”

Guard Larson audibly swallowed and glanced at me. I tightened my hold on Breaker’s hand, drawing his attention. I looked from him to the guard and back, hoping he’d understand. He seemed to, since his lips thinned, and he growled as he faced Guard Larson again.

“Or maybe I should say the patient you’ve both been raping?” Breaker asked.

The nurse gasped and stepped away from the guard. At least I knew for certain she hadn’t been in on it. She seemed too horrified for her reaction to be faked.

“Here’s what’s going to happen. I’m walking out of here with Raven, and no one from this hospital and certainly not the law, will come looking for her. If they do, I’ll make sure any guards she fingers as her rapists will get the same treatment in the worst prison possible. Are we fucking clear?” Breaker asked.

The nurse nodded. “I’ll speak with her doctor tomorrow. She’ll need her medication. I swear I didn’t know what was going on.”

“Doesn’t matter. You aren’t exactly helping her out of the goodness of your heart now that you do know. Your ass is on the line, right? Since it happened right under your nose. I have a doctor who will see her. I don’t trust any of you fuckers.” Breaker led me past them, pausing to look back at Larson. “I find out either of you hurt the nurse to keep her quiet, and things won’t go well for you.”

He turned and kept going, out the secured door at the end of the hall. We made our way downstairs and into the night. I breathed deep. It had been so long since I’d been in the fresh air.

He led me over to a truck parked at the curb and opened the passenger door. Breaker took a step back, giving me space, and I hauled myself onto the seat. He reached in and buckled me before shutting the door and walking around to the driver’s side. When he turned the key, the engine rumbled to life and cool air blasted me from the vents.

“I’m taking you to the clubhouse. It may be loud and rowdy, and I have no idea what we’ll walk in on. I need you to know the women there aren’t forced to do anything. They come to the clubhouse to party, and they can leave whenever they want.” He gazed at me as he put the truck into gear. “No one will hurt you, Raven. Not on my watch.”

New Release: Gen Pop (Souls Chapel Revenants MC) by Lani Lynn Vale #romanticsuspense

GEN POP by Lani Lynn Vale is OUT NOW!!

#aboutHangry: adjective—feeling irritable or irrationally angry as a result of being hungry.
Sometimes, Crockett felt that in her soul.

And, of course, the one time that she’s being ‘irrationally angry’ would be the time that the hottest guy on the continent walked into her place of business dressed in prison orange.

She should’ve been afraid.

She should’ve taken one look at him and walked the other way.

But, she didn’t.

Crockett Archer, better known as a doormat extraordinaire, didn’t walk away from the people she knew needed her. She’d never been able to do it with a father that didn’t love her, and she wouldn’t be able to do it with a man that didn’t think he deserved a chance at love.

One look is all it takes for Zach Caruso to know that Crockett could be his.

All he would have to do is snap his fingers, and she’d fall right into the palm of his hand.

Which is why Zach turns around and walks far, far away.

He tries not to look back.

He tries to leave her be.

But then he sees how she’s treated by the people that are supposed to love her, and all cognitive thoughts seem to flee his rational brain.

One second, he’s running in the opposite direction. The next, he’s playing her knight in dingy armor.

COVER REVEAL: Red (Salvation’s Bane MC) by Marteeka Karland #bikerromance #actionadventure @marteekakarland

Who’s ready for more Salvation’s Bane MC? Did you say YOU are? Awesome!

Here’s the Cover Reveal for Red, Salvation’s Bane MC 9!!

To celebrate the release of Red, I’m giving away a few prizes. If you know of any biker loving friends who want to join in the fun, the more the merrier!

But first let me tell you about Red…

New Paperback: Slash/Patriot by Harley Wylde #bikerromance #romanticsuspense @HarleyW_Writer

Slash (Devil’s Fury MC 7)

Shella — Trouble always seems to find me, so it’s no surprise I ended up pregnant, alone, and scared out of my mind. Then Slash shows up. Out of all the Devil’s Fury brothers to come for me, why did it have to be the one I’ve been crushing on since I was a teenager?

Slash — Only way to protect Shella is to give her my name. Doesn’t matter I’m old enough to be her father. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe… even if it means burying a few men. I already have blood on my hands. What’s a little more?

Patriot (Hades Abyss MC 6)

MaryAnne — I thought my life was over, until my knight in shining armor came to save me. Patriot. Under that hard exterior is a heart of gold. It doesn’t matter that he’s older than me. But why would a man like him ever want someone like me? I’m damaged. Broken beyond repair. Or am I? After all, Christmas is a time for miracles.

Patriot — I’ve taken out nearly every man who ever hurt MaryAnne, even if she doesn’t know it. And the two still standing won’t be for long. I’m no angel. She deserves better. And if she won’t listen to me, then maybe my whacky parrot can convince her. If there’s one thing the African Grey excels at, it’s talking when he shouldn’t.

Excerpt from Patriot

I’d been staying with Patriot for a few months now, and I still kept waiting for something bad to happen. No one had been mean to me, or tried to touch me since I’d come here. I wasn’t sure I believed I was safe. Except with Patriot. He was the only one I trusted in this place. Even my cousin made me feel hesitant. It wasn’t that I thought Sean would hurt me, but he’d changed and I didn’t know this new version.

I stared at the pale yellow walls and delicate white curtains at the window. The room was soft and feminine, and a far cry from how it had looked when I first arrived. Patriot had worked hard to give me a place to call a safe haven. He’d painted the room himself and hung the curtains. I’d been too timid to ask for anything, so he’d also purchased bedding he thought I might like.

He’d treated me better than anyone ever had, even before I’d been kidnapped. I knew he probably wanted his home back. Even though he’d been unfailingly kind to me, I couldn’t help but wonder if he only tolerated my presence. When I’d first arrived, Sean hadn’t been in any sort of shape to take care of me, so Patriot had permitted me to stay with him. My cousin was back on his feet now, and yet I hadn’t moved out.

I heard classic rock blaring out front and peered through my window down below. Patriot was on his back under the Bronco, his tools scattered around him and his jeans smeared with oil. I liked standing here, watching him. Maybe it made me a bit of a stalker, but there was something about him that drew me like a moth to a flame. I knew he was older than me, probably by quite a bit, but he was also handsome. I’d even go so far as to call him sexy, and I hadn’t thought I’d ever feel that way about a man. Not after all I’d endured.

He slid out from under the Bronco and yanked his shirt over his head, tossing it aside. My breath caught at the perfection of his body. His arms and chest were inked and covered in muscle. The sun glinted on his reddish-brown hair, making it shine with copper tones. I sighed and wondered how he wasn’t cold without his shirt. It was nearly December, and not exactly warm outside.

My phone rang, making me jump away from the window. I picked it up off the bed and saw it was my cousin.

“Hi, Sean.” He growled softly and I winced. “Sorry. Galahad.”

“It’s been three months, MaryAnne. Last thing I need is you slipping up and calling me Sean in front of my brothers. It shows a lack of respect.”

I sank to the floor, my back to the wall, and drew my knees to my chest. His tone of voice sent me back to a place I never wanted to go. My hand trembled as I held onto the phone. “Sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it.”

“I sometimes forget you’re still a kid,” he said. “Try to remember, okay? I’m not angry. Not really. You’ve been through hell and don’t need me fussing at you.”

The last thing I wanted was for anyone to call me a kid. I’d had to grow up fast after I’d been kidnapped. I’d met women ten years older than me who acted like they were still in high school.

“Why did you call?” I asked.

“Patriot isn’t answering his phone. I needed to ask him something. Can you get him for me?”

I chewed on my lower lip. Yeah, I could technically walk out and hand my phone to him. I wasn’t sure I was comfortable doing it. Taking a breath, I steadied my nerves and got up. Even though I had on fuzzy peppermint-striped socks that matched my red sweater and skinny jeans, I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to go out without shoes. Then again, it was the end of November in Mississippi. There was a chance it was in the seventies outside. I liked to be completely covered, head to toe, these days. Even having bare arms made me feel exposed.

I padded downstairs and went out the front door. The music was even louder as I approached Patriot. He’d slid back under the Bronco so that only his legs stuck out. I nudged his calf with my toes. His body went tight, and he slowly came out from under the vehicle. My throat went dry and my hand shook as I handed my phone to him. A frown marred his handsome face as he stood and took it.

“Who is this?” he demanded, keeping an eye on me. He listened a moment and his eyes narrowed. “What the fuck did you say to MaryAnne?”

I sucked in a breath. I’d noticed he was protective of me, but my heart always gave a little kick whenever he got that tone with someone. He didn’t like it when anyone upset me, and it was only one of the reasons I’d started to fall a little in love with him. Except I’d recently turned seventeen and he was a grown man who could have any woman he wanted. Why would he want someone like me anyway? I knew he’d seen the videos of what happened at the hospital where they’d left me. Even if I ever felt I was ready to date, no one would ever want to touch me. Certainly no one who knew about my past, and I wasn’t comfortable leaving the compound to start a new life elsewhere. It wasn’t safe outside the gates.

He grunted and muttered something into the phone before disconnecting the call and handing the phone back to me. I took it and slipped it into my pocket, then shifted from foot to foot. He watched me, not moving or saying a word. Did he want me to leave? I backed up a step and he reached out, wrapping his fingers around my wrist only to release me just as quick.

“You have everything you need?” he asked.

I nodded, not trusting my voice.

“I’ll be done out here in about a half hour. I’ll need a shower, but when I’m done we can go grab a bite to eat. You feel up to going out somewhere?”

I hesitated. I loved spending time with him, but leaving the compound still frightened me a little. I knew they’d taken care of the rival club, and I’d heard the staff at the hospital were being picked off one by one. What I didn’t know was whether or not I’d run into anyone who’d purchased time with me during my captivity. I wasn’t sure I was brave enough to face any of those men.

Patriot moved a step closer and reached out, tugging a lock of my hair. “I’ll keep you safe, Little Bit. Promise. No one will so much as breathe wrong in your direction. If they do, I’ll gut them where they stand.”

My lips twitched with a smile. I knew he’d do it too. He’d slammed the doctor against a concrete wall when he’d come to pick me up at the hospital. Granted, the man was a rapist and murderer. He’d deserved what he got and so much more.

“All right. I’ll go.”

When Harley’s writing, her motto is the hotter the better — off the charts sex, commanding men, and the women who can’t deny them. If you want men who talk dirty, are sexy as hell, and take what they want, then you’ve come to the right place. She doesn’t shy away from the dangers and nastiness in the world, bringing those realities to the pages of her books, but always gives her characters a happily-ever-after and makes sure the bad guys get what they deserve.

The times Harley isn’t writing, she’s thinking up naughty things to do to her husband, drinking copious amounts of Starbucks, and reading. She loves to read and devours a book a day, sometimes more. She’s also fond of TV shows and movies from the 1980’s, as well as paranormal shows from the 1990’s to today, even though she’d much rather be reading or writing.

I felt the burn of a tear slip down my cheek and before I knew it, I was in Fox’s arms and sobbing. I hadn’t cried in so long. It felt satisfying and horrible at the same time.

“Surge, I need you and any other hackers to look into Balmoral. See what you can find so we can bury those fuckers,” Spider said. “Raven, I don’t have a place for you to live on your own. Breaker brought you here. Do you want to stay with him?”

I sniffled and looked up at Fox. A slight smile kicked up the corner of his lips and he ran his hand over my hair. “She can stay with me. I have an extra room.”

“That what you want, Raven?” Spider asked. “To stay with Fox?”

I nodded, not looking away from the first man to ever make me feel seen. Understood. My heart raced and I trembled, but it wasn’t from fear. Not this time. For once, I felt like things might be okay. I didn’t know the man they claimed was my father, but if they trusted him, I’d at least meet with him. Until then, I’d stay with Fox. I could feel it deep in my gut that he’d keep me safe. Possibly even from myself. I couldn’t promise the dark thoughts wouldn’t return. I might always have days where I wanted to end it all.

The thought of staying with Fox made me feel warmer inside. The shadows were still there, pressing in, but they were held at bay. If latching onto Fox would make things better, even a little, then I knew I needed to hold onto him.
