EXCERPT
“Uncle Fabian, do you have a minute?” Peyton hesitantly entered the man’s office, closing the door behind them. “I need to talk to you about something important.”
“Of course. Have a seat.” Fabian studied Peyton, the rigid posture and troubled look in their eyes sparked concern in the older man. “Is something wrong?”
Peyton nodded as they sat down. “About a week ago, I hired someone… a homeless man… as a custodian for the school. But now I’m not sure if I did the right thing. Something seemed off about him, but I couldn’t send him away on a gut feeling. It would have been… unprofessional.” Peyton sighed heavily, shaking their head.
“You ran the standard background check, and he came up clean?” The principal nodded.
Fabian frowned. “What was suspect about him?”
“I don’t know,” Peyton murmured. “It was something about his attitude. Kind of cold. Arrogant, even. He just didn’t come off as a typical homeless person. I’ve seen many people lose their homes and end up on the streets… none of them displayed his behavior. They were often talkative, willing to help and share, but this man… I don’t know.” Peyton bit their lower lip and stared at the floor.
“Why didn’t you call me?” Fabian asked. “I would have assisted with the interview and helped you decide.”
Peyton shrugged. “With no news from Ardan and the crew, I didn’t want to bother you with something that seemed so trivial. I asked the night shift guards to monitor him. They said he made significant efforts to befriend them and get them to talk.” Peyton ran a hand over their face. “The guards also noticed the way he’s constantly surveying the grounds, almost like he’s trying to… memorize it.” Peyton looked into Fabian’s eyes, hoping the man had some thoughts on the matter.
Fabian checked the time and rose from his chair. “I have to meet with someone in an hour and I don’t want to be late… otherwise a little heart will be broken. However, I’ll come back this afternoon after classes and meet the new custodian.” The man smiled reassuringly, helping Peyton to relax. “Meanwhile, tell the guards to watch him closely.”
