Summer 1067.
Northumbria.

Oslac, thegn of the village of Acum, feels cheated – having been robbed of the chance to kill his enemy by his own kinsman.

Instead, Gundulf, the erstwhile Lord of Hexham and murderer of Acum’s villagers, is now awaiting justice for his crimes in Bebbanburh, Earl Oswulf’s fortress capital far to the north.

But when Oslac narrowly escapes death at the hands of Gundulf’s assassin, he realises he will never be safe while the Dane lives. Summoning his closest companions, Oslac heads north to demand Oswulf put an end to Gundulf’s life – only to find the prisoner has escaped.

Tracking the fugitive into the wild hills and dales of Northumbria – places far beyond the reach of Oswulf’s power – Oslac falls into Gundulf’s trap when the earl’s warband is ambushed with catastrophic consequences.

Elsewhere, unrest in the north of England is growing. Impotent in the face of Norman avaricious brutality, the Saxon nobility can do nothing to prevent their ancestral lands being passed to foreign invaders. It can only be endured for so long, and a reckoning is coming.

Once again, Oslac must put aside his personal vendetta to join with the few remaining great lords of Anglo-Saxon England in what may prove to be the final, climactic stand against their Norman overlords.

The song of swords will echo across the land once more.

Here’s what readers are saying about Jury Duty is Murder!

I was having a bad day, and this book was enough to lift any cloud. I laughed out loud, I was sad with them, and I was surprised by the plot twists even in the epilogue. Great ending. Perfect for fans of Murder in the Building and Man on the Inside. I hope there will be more with these characters. — AV_therearenobadbooks

Kate Damon’s Jury Duty Murder is a fun, fast paced, riddled with humor who-dun-it, told through the eyes of four ordinary, yet distinct folks who are so incredibly relatable, you’ll feel like you know them as soon as they are introduced. Thank you, Kate, for giving us this curl up in your favorite chair and read straight through adventure! –Barbara Newhart

 Book Excerpt

The ringing telephone woke me up. Without opening my eyes, I felt around until I touched the nightstand and finally, my phone. “Hello.”

“Wake up.”

I groaned. “Alex, what do you want?”

“I need you to wake up.”

I forced myself to sit up. The clock on the radio said it was after ten. “This better be important.”

“Something is terribly wrong,” Alex said. “It’s the thirtieth and nobody’s dead.”

“Hallelujah.” I hung up and dived back into my pillow. The phone rang again, and I groaned. Only Alex would think that no dead bodies meant something was wrong.

I rolled over and grabbed the phone. “Now what?”

“No one’s dead.”

Backstory: The Inspiration Behind Jury Duty is Murder

Jury Duty is Murder is quite a change for me.  While I have published multiple works under the name of Margaret Brownley, primarily focusing on romance novels set in the Old West, this marks my first foray into the mystery genre.

All of my stories begin with a question. In this instance, the question arose after I read about the Bill Cosby case and the decision to sequester jurors. This led me to contemplate how prolonged sequestering might impact the mental and emotional well-being of jurors, particularly in a high-profile trial.

My initial idea was to write a courtroom story, set in the 1800s, similar to my previous works. However, I encountered a significant issue: the Henry Thaw trial in 1907 marked the first instance of a sequestered jury trial. This event occurred too late for an authentic Old West setting, leading me to abandon the concept.

Then two things occurred at the same time.  One, I lost my husband to cancer and two, Covid struck, and the nation was on lockdown. This prevented me from getting the emotional support from friends and family that I would have normally gotten.

So there I was, all alone with a whole lot of time on my hands. You could say that’s when my thoughts turned to murder—figuratively speaking, of course! It’s not like I was plotting an actual crime; more like brainstorming ways to creatively express my frustration with the universe

The initial question regarding the emotional and mental effects of jury sequestering evolved into a more personal reflection as I confronted my own mental and emotional challenges. Much to my delight, the story suddenly began taking shape, not as a romance novel, but a mystery.  Who knew that grief and global pandemics could lead the way to new ideas?

Excited about my new idea, I submitted a proposal to my publishers. However, they were skeptical about a romance writer transitioning to a different genre, resulting in no interest from them. Despite this setback, the story continued to resonate with me, prompting me to work on it alongside my other novels. Eventually, I decided to send it to a small press, where the editor graciously recommended that I submit my work to The Wild Rose Press. Following this advice, I reached out to them and am pleased to share that they accepted my manuscript right away.

Guest Post – Books and Music:

There’s something magical about words and music—it’s why popular songs burrow into our minds and ears. When I started the Word of South Festival of Literature and Music in Tallahassee, Florida in 2015, it’s what we sought to tap into. Poetry has rhythm. Musical tracts tell a story. It all blends together, often into something profound, sublime or strange.

Like maybe most authors, I listen to music when I write. Usually classical works, sometimes jazz—I find that pop or music with words tends to distract me, and I’m there to write. I go through phases that correspond loosely to the book: for The Gendarme I listened to a lot of dissonant 20th century stuff: Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Weill. I was big into Messiaen. For Boy With Wings, it was more 19th century romantic pieces, Mahler and Brahms but also some jazz: Miles Davis, Mingus, Adderley, Coltrane.

It’s interesting how musical tastes change over time and also don’t, and tastes in literature do the same. I listened as a youth to what’s now called “classic rock,” and still do sometimes, but my interest has broadened as I’ve aged, and I appreciate the complexities now of classical music and jazz. I can listen to folk music pop, country—almost anything, and enjoy it. Being involved with Word of South has exposed me to a whole range of new artists that makes me feel young again.

With literature it’s much the same. I enjoyed sci-fi and fantasy as a youngster and still do. I was forced to read the classics, which I generally disliked, but later in life I went back and read many of them and found new interest there. I read widely now, biographies, non-fiction, literary fiction, even some horror and graphic works. If it’s well-written it’s wonderful, and I try to set aside time each day to read.

This may sound strange, but sometimes I can hear the words on the page as I write them, as they seem to belong to some structure beyond the page. Maybe I’m to be faulted for this—I can’t really say, and I don’t know quite where it comes from. I saw somewhere that the writer Richard Ford reads every word of his novels aloud to his wife before he completes the work. I don’t do that, but to an extent I guess I do, as I listen to them bang around in my head as I read and revise, revise and read. Occasionally I’ll utter a phrase aloud that seems awkward. Reworking it, I hear music, that gift that seems to arrive from beyond time and logic. Mixed with the beauty of language, it seems to create between them something else. Something different, and special, even ethereal. I can look back on it later and think, “Who wrote this crap?” but also think, “Hey, not bad. This isn’t bad at all.”

Mike gulped at his third cup of coffee. He fidgeted with the folder that held his résumé. “They’re paying nineteen thousand for the entire school year.”

His mother, over at the sink, asked, “Are you going to tell us what this interview’s for finally, Mr. I Don’t Want To Jinx It?”

“An aide position at Marisburg High.” He grabbed his cup again as another yawn threatened. God, but he needed to get more sleep.

His mother stalked to the table and grabbed both his cup and the nearly empty carafe from its place in the middle of the table. “Your hands are already shaking. You don’t need any more of this.”

Mike scratched at the narrow space between his neck and the collar of his dress shirt. He adjusted his tie. “I’m fine.”

She rolled her eyes. “If you go in there looking like a tweaker, no one will take you seriously.”

“A what?” Mike laughed. “Where’d you hear that word? They’re not called tweakers anymore. That must be a word you used back in the sixties.” He raised his eyebrows at her. “Were you a tweaker, Mom?”

“Getting back to this teaching position…”

“What?” his father grunted from the depths of the mudroom. “You’re not qualified for that, are you, Mike? You’ve only been at the community college for the summer, and you’re taking different language classes, not how-to-teach classes.”

“Foreign language classes, John,” Mike’s mother murmured.

The older Delaney laughed. “Listen to the woman, would you? She takes one college course herself, and now she’s the professor.” He clomped two steps into the kitchen, took off his hat, and bowed to his wife. “Thank you, Molly. I appreciate the correction.” Then he turned his attention back to Mike. “Well?”

“I’d be assisting a blind student with his class work.” His jittery fingers danced on the table, and he worked to pass it off as impatient tapping on the cover of a second copy of his résumé. “My interview’s in half an hour.”

“So get going,” his father said. “You planned to take night classes this semester anyway. Make the most of this opportunity.”

Mike got up, clutching the folder. Maybe I can take a nap when I get home. He rushed out the door. Assuming I can sleep.

* * *

Ninety minutes later Mr. Callahan, superintendent of schools, Mr. Connolly, the principal, and Ms. O’Carolyn, the guidance counselor, took turns shaking his hand. Their grips were a bit awkward, Mike being left-handed, but he’d given up trying to shake the normal way. Even if that would have further dispelled the stereotypes.

“Congratulations,” Mr. Callahan said. “We don’t usually make a decision this fast, but with teacher in-services starting next week, it’s important. You’ll be expected to participate in those, of course. I’ll e-mail you a schedule.”

Mike swallowed. “Yes, sir. I’ll be there.” He almost asked when he would meet Aidan Kelly, the blind student, but that would probably be on the schedule. For now he needed to worry about teacher in-services. Whatever those were.

“If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact any of us. We’re at your disposal. But be patient. This is a busy time of year.” The superintendent ushered Mike toward the office door. “Good luck. I hear Mr. Kelly is intelligence personified, but a little… quirky.” He chuckled. “Have a great day, Mike, and again, congratulations.”

The carpet scraped the bottoms of Mike’s shoes as he made good his escape. Other administrative offices surrounded the superintendent’s enclosed haven like deficient, two-walled boxes. Mike headed back the way he’d come, unable to take a straight path because of the random assignment of desks and file cabinets.

His heart jackhammered in his throat. He slowed his feet and flexed his hands to keep his fingers relaxed. I got the job? Really? He felt a five year old’s irrepressible grin starting and forced himself to hold his bland, polite expression.

I’ll be reporting to Marisburg High every day. Just like when I was in high school.

That thought squashed any and all urges to grin, and he rushed past the final desk, anxious to be alone in his car.

He saw the wavering shadow of a person on the other side of the outer door. He had barely enough time to get out of the way as the door flew open.

“They promised to wait.” The man, resplendent in a black suit and dark, subdued tie, shoved his way past Mike as if he didn’t see him. Despite the overcast skies, he wore dark sunglasses. “They promised to get our input,” he went on muttering, his words barely audible. He swung a long stick out in front of him like a pendulum, tapping the floor rhythmically. “Now I hear they’re holding interviews for my aide without consulting me?”

Mike escaped out the door before it closed. And before too many people could catch him staring. Not that any of the office staff seemed to be watching him. Through the door’s window, Mike watched a woman intercepting the blind man, taking his arm.

The red-haired man tore his wrist out of her grasp.

That’s a white cane, Mike thought as his logic caught up with his shock. And that must be Aidan Kelly. He’s a high school senior, which means he’s probably sixteen or seventeen, but he looks like an Irish god.

Quirky wasn’t exactly the word for him. Arrogant, maybe, or rude.

A woman brushed by Mike, opening the office door and rushing in, but he scarcely noticed.

Or hot. His gaze lingered on the man’s mildly curly locks. And if he’s got an ounce of fat along with all that muscle, I’m a — He froze. A what? What was he exactly, staring at another man?

I’m straight. End of discussion.

“At least I got the job,” he told the empty foyer.

My Review…

3 1/2 stars

This wasn’t quite what I expected. Not in a bad way, but to me, it didn’t really come across as horror — more of a dark fantasy. For a short story, it had all the elements a story should have. I enjoyed the suspense as we waited to find out what was hiding in the water. I just felt what came next was anticlimactic. Overall, it was well-written, the characters were nicely done. The story just didn’t wow me.

My Review…

★ ★ ★ ★ ★
5 stars!

While I admit the first few chapters had a slower pace, it was necessary to build up to the main events. There were times Luna’s character annoyed me, but she was a strong character overall. But my favorite was Chance. The author did a fantastic job with his character! When I got to the end of the book and realized there’s going to be a second one, I was thrilled!

Dead by Morning is a must-read for fans of the Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises. If you like your horror with twisted killers, suspense, and a dash of the paranormal, you won’t be disappointed with this book.

Now she was waiting for her fourth and final date.

Eamon.

Goodness, anticipation is everything.

She couldn’t believe he wanted to go out with her on a  real date. Most guys found her too  intellectual. It wasn’t  her fault she owned a bookstore and loved to read.  History, fiction, romance, fantasy, sci-fi—it didn’t matter.  Everything was interesting to her. No genre was off

limits.

The buzzer sounded, and she waited for Eamon. He  arrived and took his seat. He didn’t say anything. She  didn’t either. They sat for a moment, looking at each other,  his blue eyes to her green eyes.

Abruptly, the air surrounding her turned hot, but it  wasn’t the kind of hot that made you sweat. It was the  kind of sexual intensity that could consume a person, only  to let go once it had been satisfied. Opaline fought the urge  to fan herself.

Like a foggy night, the room around the two of them became hazy. Eamon reached across the table and touched  her cheek. Her body had a will of its own, and she leaned into his hand, closed her eyes, and waited for him to  kiss her.

“Opaline? Opaline, are you all right?”

“Wha-what?”

The room was clear again when she opened her eyes.

Eamon hadn’t kissed her. She had imagined the kiss. He  hadn’t reached out to her. But he was now. He didn’t touch  her cheek. like she had envisioned. Instead, he was  touching her hand. Until he wasn’t.

Goodness sakes alive.

“Sorry. I guess the excitement of the night has gotten to me,” she said, recovering. “Did you ask me something?”

“No problem. I asked what you like to eat. If we’re  going to go out on a date, I’ll have to find a restaurant  because I don’t cook.”

“I haven’t technically agreed to go out with you.” She  laughed nervously.

“I’m not going to let you say no.”

“Oh, is that how it’s going to be?” Opaline reached  across the table and took his hand. “I guess I don’t have a  choice, then. Yes, I would like to go out with you.”

“Great. Does tomorrow night work for you?”

“You do work fast,” she said, lowering her voice, which  came out in a low silvery tone.

“Only when I need to.”

She knew he was implying other things, and she  smiled again, wishing he had kissed her.

The buzzer ended their date, and Opaline stood. Most  of the other attendees had finished their dates too. “I hate  to rush things, but I need to wrap things up for the event.”

“If you would like, I can help you with the cleanup,”  Eamon said.

“That’s so thoughtful, and here I was thinking you  only liked to give the orders.”

She saw by the way his head tilted to the side that her  reply had caught him off guard. He looked like a kid caught  with his hand in the cookie jar, and he was having a hard  time coming up with a comeback. He mustn’t be used to  word games like her customers at the bookstore were.  They usually gave it right back to her. Eamon, on the other  hand, was still at a loss for words.

“Yes, I’d love your help. I have to stick around until  everyone leaves. I’ll make an  nnouncement to let them  know what time we have to be out of here. Then I can—no,  we—can start.”

“Sounds good. I’ll round up my sister to pitch in too,”  he said.

Opaline heard him chuckle and wondered if he had  offered his sister’s help without her knowledge.

I was born and
raised in the cold and beautiful Minnesota, but I escaped to Illinois for
seventeen years to raise my two boys, and now I call Florida home. My husband
Andy, who’s always been my hero, has put up with my late night computer typing
and endless stacks of papers with my stories on them. We have one furry friend
as family: Chip, a sixteen year old ragdoll cat.

Life has been
full of ups and downs, but I’ve made it through the hard times. I love to
travel and go to Disney World to trade pins.
I’ve been a bowler for many years, and you can catch me writing my next
novel at the lanes.

I encourage you
to check out my web site, www.sonjagunter.com for more info and don’t be surprised if I
let my Norwegian heritage come through in my stories.

Go Vikings! You
betcha!

Publication Date: March 18th, 2025
Publisher: Historium Press
Pages: 418 pages
Genre: Historical Fiction

1932. Natalia is 16 and a bootlegger’s daughter, playing the mermaid mascot on a rundown paddlewheel used to entertain brewers and distributors.

A sequined costume hides her scarred and misshaped legs, but it can’t cover up the painful memories and suspicions that haunt her. An eccentric healer who treats patients with Old Country tonics, tries to patch wounds, but only adds to the heartache. A fierce storm threatens to destroy everything, including a stash of stolen jewels.

1941. Prohibition is over, but the same henchmen still run the show. Nattie’s new mermaid act is more revealing, with more at risk. When the dry-docked paddlewheel is bought by the US Navy for training exercises, the pressure escalates further.

Can Nattie entice a cocky US Navy officer to help her gain access to the ship for one last chance to confront her past, settle scores, and retrieve the hidden loot? Is there a new course ahead?

Excerpt:

The water level was lower than usual. Every time she got out of the tank, she took water with her, leaving less and less. Cigarette butts floated, collecting in a corner. She’d have to type NO DROPPING TRASH IN THE MERMAID’S TANK on the next sign she made for the little silver frame on the post.

The sand in the bottom of her tank hid other tidbits, hardly trash. There were flat blue rocks, round and smooth, perfect for skipping. Then there were shells, mostly snail shells, mostly busted. At the very bottom was a gold bracelet with a charm, a mermaid, of course. It was a gift, the kind that could get a man killed. She couldn’t stand to look at it, couldn’t stand to throw it overboard either.

More jewels had found their way into her tank. Passengers were so careless after a few whiskeys. They never noticed a bump or tug or twist from the clumsy cripple kid in sequins. There was an oval brooch with diamonds, a gold watch fob, red ruby earrings, a dangly necklace, a ring with every color in the world.

She had such a lovely collection. She sighed. If Mr. Whiskers were here, he’d purr.

The calm before the storm.

She stirred the sand with a stick of driftwood, a prop that was quite useful for fishing in the sand and burying and unburying secrets. The bauble soup was a powerful remedy for lousy moods and for red-haired boys who didn’t show up when they promised and a railing that got busted on purpose because a drunkard deckhand talked to her one time too many. The soup sparkled, sun specks skimming the water’s surface.

Looking out over the onboarding passengers on the deck below, she scanned for sparkles. She could always use more. Her fingertips itched. Anticipation was almost as lovely as the prize.

There! A woman in a snappy white dress and hat with plumes all a-flutter had enough glitter around her neck to light up midnight on Mackinac Island. How splendidly cool to the touch they would be. Ice. Crisp. The edges would be hard and sharp. The centers would be molten, too hot to handle until they sizzle-cooled in her tank for a mermaid eon. Ten minutes, at least.
